The Story of an Hour Book Review

The Story of an Hour is a short story written by Kate Chopin and published in 1894. The story describes the series of emotions Louise Mallard endures after hearing of the death of her husband, who was believed to have died in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard suffers from heart problems and therefore her sister attempts to inform her of the horrific news in a gentle way. Mrs. Mallard locks herself in her room to immediately mourn the loss of her husband. However, she begins to feel an unexpected sense of exhilaration. “Free! Body and soul free!” is what she believes is a benefit of his death. At the end of the story, it is made known that her husband was not involved in the railroad disaster and upon his return home Mrs. Mallard suddenly dies. The cause of her death is ambiguous and left for analysis as it can range from her known heart problems to psychological factors. We can ask ourselves if the real reason for the death was known that she wouldn’t be free after she sees that her husband isn’t really dead.

the Age of Innocence

If you want to know better about the late nineteenth-century New York society, you can’t miss this excellent piece of work. World-widely regarded as one of the woman author’s greatest achievements, the book vividly portrait the struggle between the individual and the community, and the contradiction between passion and duty. It also explores the liberties of change as a society, from conservative culture to one that is less formal and affords its member greater freedom.

The central character Newland Archer has been raised into a society where manners and morals rules are strictly followed by individuals. Gossiping can be heard everywhere, and members of the society strive to uphold their reputations above everything. Under this background the marriage between Archer and May ought to be a well-matched one in both social and economic status. However, Archer’s world is thrown upside down by the arrival of May’s cousin Countess Ellen. Recently departing from her husband in Europe, Ellen shocks the conservative New York society with her revealing clothes, carefree manners. Besides, she is seriously surrounded by bad rumors and rejected by the New York upper-class circle. However, the more Archer comes to know better about her fresh living style, the more bored he gets towards his wife May. Compared with her cousin, she seems to be a manufactured product of her class: polite, innocent but no self opinion and no change for anything fresh.

Lord Jim

“Lord Jim " is one of Joseph Conrad's famous book , the novel presented us a man who was bravely search for his lost honor and profoundly exposed the society of that years .

The novel has portrayed many different people; the major character is Jim .It tells about Jim, a sailor, dreams happily of the adventures waiting for him at sea. He sees himself as the brave man who always does his duty just. But danger has come, and Jim is not ready for it, when the accident happens he fails to act as a hero of his dreams, only a man believes in Jim and help Jim to find a new life so Jim started a journey of search for his lost honor. Somebody thought Jim is crowd; some of them said Jim is wonderful. Different people have different opinions. In my opinion ,both people has their positive and negative , even Jim fails to act like the hero of his dreams at once .In my opinion both people has their positive and negative , ademit mistakes and to reveal the truth is the performance of the brave . In the story, Jim not only admits mistakes and to reveal the truth, also he bravely searches for his lost honor. So for this Jim was brave. In this book “follow the dream, to the end." was the most impressive sentence in my mind. Anyway Jim did not go wrong; in fact, he developed wonderfully, and lives his life bravely and honestly to the end.
