Recently, I have read a book written by a world famous writer Charles Dickens and it is name is Oliver Twist. This well-known book tells us a vivid and moved story which has happened in the 19th century.

The leading character in this novel is Oliver who is an orphan. For a moment I feel a surge of sympathy for Oliver Twist. Besides, he possess- es an innocent and lively personality. He was born in a workhouse. Unfortunately, as soon as he arrived in this hard world his mother died then. In his nine years old, he began his long road of survival. One can imagine is that he suffered more. Nevertheless this had left no bitterness in his gentle souls, and all his lives he showed the mercy and kindness to others that God himself shows to all things that breathe.

Later, Oliver was sold to a coffin shop just because he wanted more food. Oliver couldn’t bear with their insult, so he ran away there and went to London.

篇七 :Oliver Twist雾都孤儿英文读后感

Title: Oliver Twist

Author: Charles Dickens

Setting: The historical background of Oliver Twist

written by Charles Dickens happened in the

1830s in London. In those days, the society

was so dark and there was a big gap

between rich and poor. The setting has an

important effect on the story. Dickens uses his

hyperbolic irony and sentimentalism to create

characters currently residing in the underworld

of industrial London.

Characters:

1. Oliver Twist, The main character of the story. Oliver is an affection-starved little boy who will not commit crimes. He was abused as a young child, and only wants to be loved. His adventures make him the best of friends and the worst of enemies. 2. Mr. Sowerberry ,A coffin maker that Oliver was apprenticed to. He generally treated the boy well, but chose his wife’s lies over Oliver’s truths.

篇八 :每月阅读Oliver Twist一部分英文版读后感

My thoughts of Oliver Twist

This month I begin to read Oliver Twist and I have read sixteen chapters already. Before I read it, I watched its movie’s version. I’m deeply appealed by the plot of this story so I decided to read its original. The first sixteen chapters describe Oliver’s experience from his birth to the return to the resort of thieves.

People at that time always looked down upon and abused the poor children. One of which impress me a lot is that when Oliver was nine years old, he was sent back to the workhouse where he was born. He had to pick up the oakum from those old ropes which were used in the queen’s ships. It sounds so ridiculous that the adult in the story thought that it’s a useful trade. Those children in the workhouse were very weak and the board was very fat. The board treated the children badly but the outside world thought those children were well treated. And Mrs. Sowerberry, Oliver’s new mistress, only gave Oliver the leftover from the dog for his dinner. Those miserable scenes make me feel uneasy.
