Reading Report of Sons and Lovers During my extracurricular time, I started reading Sons and Lovers, which was written by David Herbert Lawrence. He was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter who published as D. H. Lawrence. He was born on September 11, 1885 to a miner and his wife in the small village of Eastwood near Nottingham, England. Arthur and Lydia Lawrence, his parents, had a troublesome marriage from the start: his father, a miner, was content to stay on the mining grounds while his mother yearned to leave. So his childhood was dominated by poverty and friction between his parents. He was educated at Nottingham High School, and won a scholarship. He worked as a clerk in a surgical appliance factory, and then for four years as a pupil-teacher. He was died in Vence, France on March 2, 1930. Lawrence is now valued by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism in English literature. There is a background before the author wrote this book. Lawrence lived at a time when the Industrial Revolution was taking on the whole world, especially in Great Britain, which changed from agricultural society towards industrial society. And it brought all changes in national and personal lives. Lawrence?s novel Sons and Lovers deals with Lawrence?s personal experiences in the working-class environment in Nottinghamshire.

《儿子与情人》读后感

——浅析母亲、儿子与情人的关系

在本学期的20世纪西方文学史课上，老师讲到了劳伦斯及其作品，这给我留下了很深刻的印象。带着对其作品的一些理解，我看了他的小说《儿子与情人》，说实话很吸引我。或许很多人都只知道这是一部经典的情色小说，对它都或多或少的敬而远之，我也差不多，至少不太敢拿着书在别人面前看。真正看过后，才知道自己之前对它的理解有多肤浅，可以说，它是我读的时间最短，但用情最长的一部作品。

小说中涉及到的“恋子情结”和“恋母情结”，大抵与劳伦斯的个人生活经历有关。正如劳伦斯曾对自己的情人说的这样——“你知道我一直爱着我的母亲。就像情人一样爱她，所以我总也无法爱你。”相似于劳伦斯父母及家庭情况，作品中写到出生相对优越受到良好教育的莫莱尔夫人爱上了一贫如洗文化水平低下却英俊潇洒的矿工莫莱尔，于是义无反顾地嫁给他。结婚后，生活的艰辛和文化的差异以及生活习惯的不同，莫莱尔夫人开始厌弃丈夫，把全部的爱倾注在孩子身上，希望他们能成长为出类拔萃的人才，摆脱掉他们父亲身为矿工的命运。由此产生了畸形的母爱。她深爱自己的大儿子威廉，对他寄托了尤其深的感情。威廉不负厚望，为伦敦律师当文书，成功挤入伦敦的上流社会，但为了挣钱劳累致死。威廉的死使莫莱尔夫人一蹶不振，而二儿子的重病使她从死者的悲痛中醒来，重新面对生者的世

保罗，你这是为何？

这是一个悲剧，一个儿子与情人的悲剧。爱，本应是世间最美好的事物。然而在保罗这里，他与她们的爱，超越了底线，早已注定了悲惨的结局。

米莉安和克拉拉这两个女人，他最终都没有得到：抑或说精神上他从米莉安身上得到过，肉体上他在克拉拉身上得到过短暂的安慰，不过都没有长久，很快地，都淡出了彼此的视界……

保罗对米丽亚姆有灵魂上的渴望，却不能在身体上达到真正的和谐统一，反而感觉是玷污；对克莱拉是肉欲之爱，心灵上却不能相互走近。他代表的应该是有思想的人遭遇的痛苦吧？不过，如今这个世道，是否还有人会这样的痛苦呢？我不清楚还有多少人在关心自己的灵魂，快餐爱情的遍布，欲望的随处发泄，还有人会因为和自己肉体结合的人不懂得自己的灵魂而痛苦吗？

其实，他心中至爱的女人应该是自己的母亲！多么奇特而复杂的情感啊！没有人能取代她在他心中的位置！他的母亲是幸福的，虽然丈夫不能给她想要的关爱，可是她有保罗，把她当作一个纯洁的少女来呵护，对她的爱没有任何的牵强和杂质，能有几个母亲可以得到这样的待遇，尽管她的一生并不顺利奢华，甚至是在贫困窘迫中度过的，但是她是幸福的！

如果他是一个很庸俗的男人，或者说他活在当下的环境中，尽管可以去及时行乐，并不关注自己的灵魂，他应该过的很自在很开心，因为，他那么招女人爱。但是他却是孤独的，绝望的，没有一个真正懂他的人和他携手而行，他的世界是冰凉的，尽管他满怀激情，却无法宣泄！肉欲的发泄却更加重他的绝望。。。

Sons and Lovers

Sons and Lovers was D.H. Lawrence's first major novel. His only major novel, some would say; but even readers who are out of sympathy with him, or who feel that his gifts were not really those of a novelist, have usually been happy to make a wholehearted exception in this one case.

It is a book that goes straight to the point, at the outset and at almost every subsequent stage. Between them his two methods leave us in no doubt where the heart of his story is to be located.

Gertrude Morel is a woman of high principle, of character and refinement. Her husband is a miner who can barely read and write. Marrying him for passion, she is bitterly disappointed by his rough manners, his drinking, what she can only see as his weakness and irresponsibility. When the book opens, the marriage has already turned into a battlefield, and the love she has withdrawn from Morel is being redirected toward the first of her children. In the previous chapters, Gertrude Morel is most devoted to her eldest son William. But after he dies of a skin disease, she plunges into grief. Seeing William is gone, she rededicates her life to Paul, and this revives her. She teaches her son art, education, and social advancement. She lives for her sons and will do anything to see them make their way in the world.

Walter Morel znd Baxter Dawes

Because of their similar situation in marriage, Walter Morel znd Baxter Dawes were putting together. After finishing the story, I feel a little bit sad. And I was sympathetic with them. I wrote this report in a very informal way because I believe only by this way can I express my true feelings to the two men.

Walter Morel znd Baxter Dawes have bad-temper, an unpleasant marriage, an addiction to alcoholic, etc. For my point of view, they totally had the same feeling to life, family and marriage. It is hard to point out what kind of specific feeling was. However, I believe I can read their mind and I believe it is correct.

Deformed Maternal Love

- Thought on sons and lovers

In eyes of many, maternal love is the hollies emotion in the world and mother as the holder of maternal love is always compared to incarnate angel. But my view was altered dramatically after I read D.H. Lawrence's first major novel, sons and lovers.

The story mainly focus on Mrs. Morel, mother of the sons, is the major character in the novel. She is a strong-willed, refined, puritanical, and middle-class lady who has been shocked and disappointed by her marriage to a miner. Then she devotes herself passionately to her children for consolation, especially her sons. However, Mrs. Morel’s love and care is overmuch and rather heavy to her children, which ultimately causes the death of her elder son, William and crippled love of her second son, Paul. As far as I am concerned, the mother’s love in this novel is deformed and diseased that led to tragedy of her sons. In this novel, Mrs. Morel pours all her passion on his children. So she can get a sense of being loved. She takes her son as her perfect lovers in her deep heart. And that is why Mrs. Morel is so jealous of sons’ girlfriends and even persuades William to give up her girlfriend when the lovers plan to marry. Mrs. Morel deprives her son’s rights of love. And it causes the death of William died by pneumonia, and makes Paul loses ability to love anymore.

Book Report of Sons and Lovers

The book which written by D.H. Lawrence is mainly about love between a son and his mother. The first half of the novel focuses on the love between Paul and his mother, while the rest is about different kinds of love between Paul and two girls.

The elder son in the family is William who is a lawyer in London. Paul is the second son, whose mother was born in a middle-class family and she is cultured while his father is a miner in Nottinghamshire mine. His parents fall in love at first sight at a party and they live happily after they get married. Then they make money to support the family together.
