Part 3 Reading and Writing

A.Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 7.5分)

Is there a famous person whom you really admire(钦佩)? Wouldn’t you love to have his or her autograph(手迹)? You would never throw that person’s autograph away. Many people feel the same way as you. However, some people collect autographs even from people they don’t admire. They just want autographs from any famous person. They don’t collect these autographs to keep them. They collect the autographs to sell them.

Collecting autographs has become a business. In fact, there are more than 20,000 people who collect autographs. These people are willing to pay a lot of money for an autograph. Therefore, autograph hounds now hang around(在……闲逛) sports centers, concerts arenas, and modern restaurants. These people try to get autographs they can sell. They can sometimes make as much as $1,500 for one autograph. In fact, one very successful autograph hound earns(赚钱) about $100,000 a year. There are also companies that buy and sell autographs. One company, Profiles in History, says it has the largest collection of actors’ or actresses’ autographs in the world. The company earns more than $12 million a year! One autograph may cost under $100. Other autographs can cost several thousand dollars.

The price of an autograph doesn’t depend on how famous the person is. It depends on how rare(稀少) the autograph is. For example, famous people like Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon sign a lot of autographs. Therefore, their autographs are not rare and are not worth(值) very much money. On the other hand, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow rarely sign anything. This makes their autographs more rare and more valuable(珍贵的). Queen Elizabeth II almost never signs autographs. Therefore, something with her signature(签名) on it might sell for around $3,500. It doesn’t matter if the person is dead. Elvis Presley and Napoleon signed many things. Their signatures are only worth $1,500. However, signed letters from Marilyn Monroe are very rare. They can cost $50,000 each. The highest price ever paid for an autograph was $750,000. This was for a letter written by Abraham Lincoln.

A) buys a lot of autographs B) gets autographs from famous people

C) signs many things D) admires famous people very much

Listening to music can be fun, but it can also cause many problems. When I was a young girl, I used to listen to pop music while doing homework. The only problem was that I listened to it very 85 . At that time, I lived with my parents. They hated hearing my loud music particularly at night. It was unpleasant to them. I had to use headphones (耳机) in order not to make noise when I wanted to enjoy some music. I always listened to the music two or three levels too high. This brought more damage to my eardrums (耳膜) than listening to music in a(n) 87 space.

After damaging my eardrums, I felt like (感到好似) I was always asking people to repeat themselves. And 88 I had to do that a lot. I could no longer clearly hear what they were saying. This became a big headache to me. At university I had to sit in the front of the classroom so I could hear the lecture. This meant that 89 I was not on time for class and had to sit in the back, I couldn’t not hear the teacher at all. The result was that I didn’t get good grades.

After completing university, I began doing sales job for a living. Because I couldn’t hear clearly, my customers often complained that I wasn’t paying attention when they were talking. That wasn’t good for business. Finally I decided to get a hearing aid (助听器). Normally hearing aids are for 91 people, but for me loud music caused me to have one about thirty years too soon.

D. Answer the questions(8.5’)

At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowed and polluted. Luckily ,we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like.

First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars-it takes months. However, by 2100,spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!

Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live on. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now.

There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we can easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.

Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.

There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.

However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on Earth today. Food will not be the same-meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.

1. What will our Earth be like in about 90 years?

___________________________________________

2. What should scientists do to make it possible for humans to live on Mars? _____________________________________________

3. How should humans prevent from easily jumping too high and flying away? ______________________________________________

4. Why can we have more time for our hobbies if we live on Mars?

5. What do you think of online schools on Mars?
