Nanjing is a city of long history and splendid culture. It

was the ancient capital of 6 dynasties in Chinese history. There are so many attractions here worth visiting, like Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum, the Ming Tomb, the Office of the President, the Confucius Temple and the Jiming Temple. The history left Nanjing with a splendid cultural heritage. But it is also now a modern city with so many skyscrapers and modern building, like Olympic Sports Center, Zifeng Tower, which is the 7th tallest building in the world. Nanjing people are very hospitable and welcoming.

南京市有着悠久的历史和灿烂的文化。它曾先后成为中国历史上六个朝代的都城。南京有许多值得游玩的景点，如中山陵、明孝陵、总统府、夫子庙、鸡鸣寺等等。南京有着灿烂的文化遗产，南京同时也是拥有无数摩天大楼与现代化建筑的都市，如奥体中心、紫峰大厦。紫蜂大厦是世界第7高楼。南京人民十分热情好客。

Dr. Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum is in the eastern suburb of Nanjing. Our university is near there. Dr. Sun Yatsen is the forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution. There are altogether 392 steps. This number is exactly the total population of Chinese people, 392 million. If you look downside, what you see is only the platforms, but not the footsteps. This is a

metaphor for Dr. Sun’s broad vision. But before you climb up, if you look up, what you see is only the footsteps, but not the platforms. It is a metaphor for the hardship of revolution.

中山陵位于南京东郊，与我校毗邻。孙中山是我国民主革命的先驱。中山陵共有392级台阶，这个数字暗合当时中国3亿9千万中国同胞。站在顶端向下看，只见平台不见台阶，象征着孙先生开阔的眼界。如果在下面向上看，只见台阶不见平台，暗喻了革命的艰苦与困难。

The Confucius Temple sits at the south of Nanjing on the bank of the Qinhuai River. It is an ideal place for tourists to understand traditional Chinese culture as well as enjoy shopping. The Confucius Temple was first build in the Song Dynasty for people to pay worship to Confucius. The Gateway of All Scholars is the first entrance to the temple. On the southern bank of the Qinhuai river there is a red brick wall, the Screen Wall. It is to show that Confucian learning is too profound to be understood completely, especially for the common folks.

Xiaoling Tomb, or the Ming Tomb was built 600 years ago. It is the mausoleum of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. The sacred way is lined on both sides with 12 pairs of giant stone animals in 6 kinds. For each kind of the animals, there are one pair standing and the other kneeling. The standing pair is working and the kneeling resting. These animals are lions, camels, elephants, Bixie, Kylin, and horses. Bixie and Kylin were ancient mythical animals. These 4 pairs of stone statues are called Wen Zhongs. 2 pairs are court officials and 2 pairs are warriors.
