A

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.

My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him.I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same.

On the way to the harbour we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbour itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea.As we got on board, we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance.

On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby.We couldn't believe it — there aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive.

The little baby whale —actually as big as our boat — was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools (漩涡) and waves."She's trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side," my father said.At this point, my father moved our boat in 4

a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel.Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe -- and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes.Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance.

In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day.Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.

36.The author says "I' m so glad I did..‖(in Para.2)because _________.

A.he witnessed the whole process of fishing

B.he enjoyed the beauty of the calm sea

C.he experienced the rescue of the whales

D.he spent the weekend with his family

37.The mother whale failed to help her baby because __________.

A.she had stayed in the polluted water for too long

B.the whirlpools she had made were not big enough

C.she had no other whales around to turn to for help

D.the waves pushed her baby in the wrong direction

38.What is the theme of the story?

A.Saving lives brings people a sense of happiness.

B.Fishing provides excitement for children.

C.It's necessary to live in harmony with animals.

D.It's vital to protect the whale in the ocean.

British men are encouraged to cry.

There are certain things British men like to believe about themselves. The first is that one day they will again win the World Cup. They also believe they do not cry.

Over the centuries, Britons are believed to have a "stiff upper lip". But is this true?

Yes, it is. A recent study arranged by Kleenex on how the British express their emotions reveals that 95 percent of them still contain their emotions.

Moreover, while 72 percent think this is unhealthy, 19 percent can't remember the last time they "let it out"○41. As a result, Kleenex is launching the "Let It Out" campaign that encourages Brits to grab a tissue and have a good cry.

These days, however, the male Briton's attitude toward crying is changing. Though the majority still struggles to open up emotionally, a 2004 study by Oxford's Social Issues Research Center found that 77 percent of British men considered crying in public increasingly acceptable. 5

crying in front of their mothers.○40 Scotsmen are the least emotional, although they are the most likely to cry at weddings.

Peter Marsh, director of the center, said: "Crying can now indicate sensitivity rather than weakness. Like with David Beckham, crying because you're dropping off your boy at nursery isn't seen as weak. "

Winston Churchill was said to be a frequent crier, shedding tears at seeing a survivor in an air raid shelter(防空洞), and when he saw his wife after a long absence.

Psychologists say that while society has accepted that men can cry, there are limits. Ronald Bracey, a consulting psychologist, said: "If a man began to cry when he was having stitches(缝针)in hospital, he would be considered as a wimp(软弱的人). Men still need to be seen as strong when it comes to physical pain. " ○42

39. What does the passage mainly deal with?

D. Different attitudes British men have towards. A. They are supposed to easily control emotions over the centuries.

B. They are confident that they will again get successful in the World Cup.

D. Nowadays, the male Briton's attitude toward crying is changing.

41. The word "contain" in paragraph 3 means ______.

A. store B. hold back C. include D. stir up

42. What does the author think of the British men's crying?

A. They should cry if hurt.

B. They should keep firm not to cry to show they are not wimps.

C. They should be brave in face of physical pain and cry if necessary when facing other problems.

D. They should "let it out" whatever problems they meet with.

Against the assumption that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate,○44 scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.○46

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions.○43 Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more 6

frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming○44 because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧)levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.○46

―We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.‖ Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space○45. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

43. According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may _______.

A. result in a warming climate B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

C. lead to a longer fire season D. protect the forests and the environment there

44. Earlier studies about northern forest fires ________.

A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming

45. The underlined phrase ―soaked up‖ in the last paragraph most probably means ________.

A. released B. absorbed C. created D. disturbed

46. From the text we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may ______.

A. warm the climate as the assumption goes

B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

A chip inserted in a young quadriplegic's (四肢麻痹患者) brain is already improving his quality of life. 7

Soon the benefits may be more widespread. ○48

A 25-year-old man unable to move from the neck down recently did what many assumed impossible. After a knife attack that had left him paralyzed, all he could move was his head,○47 which he used to push a switch and call for a nurse. And he could turn his wheelchair by blowing into a straw near his face. That was it.

Then last June, a Foxborough (Mass.) company called Cyber Kinetics opened the man's skull and inserted a special chip no larger than a baby aspirin. That insert has given him a few additional and precious abilities.○48 When connected to a special computer via a cable, the chip translates the young man's thoughts into commands that let him move a cursor across a PC screen and open e-mail. He can draw a circle with a computer painting program. And he can use a robotic hook(钩) to perform simple tasks like picking up a candy and sliding it across a table.

All he has to do is to think.

Several new studies have begun or been completed in the past year. In fact, more than half of the scientific papers in this field, called brain-to-computer interaction (BCI), have been published in the past two years, notes Jonathan Wolpaw, a research physician at Wadsworth Center, the New York State Health Dept.'s research laboratory.

Brain surgeries (手术) are no longer rare: Thousands of Parkinson's disease patients have had special devices inserted in their brains to ease uncontrollable shaking and other symptoms. The inserts themselves have improved, so the body doesn't reject them as furiously(猛烈地). And significant development has been achieved in software used to interpret the brain's signals and change them into commands understood by computers. ○49

But increased demand for thought technology remains the biggest reason for the field's progress. Today, 4 million Americans live with paralysis according to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation.

Scientists hope that thought technology will reduce the impact of such disabilities. People with spinal-cord injuries, for example, often lose their ability to walk because the communications network between their brain and their legs has been interrupted. The brain still commands the leg muscles to move, but they don't hear its orders.

50Thought technology, scientists hope, will bridge this communications gap. "Our goal is for you to ○

see paralyzed people eating at a restaurant and for you not to know that they are paralyzed," says John Donoghue, founder and chief scientific officer at Cyber Kinetics.

47. What was the young man’s trouble after a knife attack?

A. It was impossible for him to do anything.

B. By no means could he call for a nurse.

C. He could not use his organs under the neck.

8

D. He was unable to move his head.

48. What plays the most important role in improving the young man’s quality of life?

A. A chip B. A computer C. A robotic hook D.A company

49. What can we learn from Paragraph Six?

B. There has been some progress in the field of thought technology.

software has been developed to interpret the brain’s signals.

50. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Communications gap B. Thought technology

C. American quadriplegics D. Human brains
