1. Résumé AmE / Curriculum vitae BrE(CV)

is a short written document that lists your education and your previous jobs, which you send to employers when you are looking for a job. It is a means of advertising yourself.

2. What information to include

name, address with area code, contact number, and e-mail address(if any), date and place of birth, sex, martial status, citizenship, race, religion keep your career objective general in nature.

3. Points to remember

a. The language you use should be clear, concise and easy to follow.

b. A résumé follows a reverse chronological order.

c. A résumé generally does not exceed one page unless you apply for a senior managerial position.

d. Include such personal information as is required; such personal information as date and place of birth, sex, martial status, citizenship, race, religion is not required in some countries.

4. Cover letters for résumés

are sent with your résumé.

Guidelines for Job Application

1. Job application letters vs. résumé

a. A job application letter is basically a sales letter.

b. A job application letter is another approach to obtaining an interview. c. A job application letter is sent instead of a résumé; do not send both.

2. Basic sturcture in which you

* explain how you heard about the vacancy;

* specify the job you are seeking;

* introduce yourself. in which you

* first say something about yourself that will make your reader want to go on

reading;

* then answer the question “why you” of all the applications or résumés they

have received by stating your accomplishments and abilities;

* tell them you genuinely want to work for the company/ organization, etc. in which you

* suggest what you will do to follow up;

* request an interview.

* using “sincerely(yours)”;

* leaving room for your signature and then type your name.

3. Points to remember

a. Use standard format of business letters---either the block-left style or the modifide block-left style.

b. Limit the letter to one page.

c. Do not use “To Whom It May Concern”

d. Use the person’s title in case you do not know his/her name, e.g. Sales Manager.

Guidelines for job applications apply to other applications though what you ask

for is different.
