Script (I) – A Stranger in Town

This story takes place in Oaktown, a long, long time ago.

Oaktown was a quiet little town. Everyone knew everyone, so one day when a stranger came to town, everyone wanted to know about him.

The mayor, is holding a meeting with some townsfolk in the town square.

(The curtain rises and the townsfolk are together making noise but we can’t hear what they are saying. Mr. and Mrs. String are busy on the other side of the stage setting up their shop.)

Everyone be quiet! The mayor is going to speak. Okay, everyone. Let’s vote. Those who agree say, “Yes”. Yes! (except S1 who says, “Hi!” (like the TV commercial)) Everyone against say, “No”. Hi! S1, you can’t agree and disagree. Hi! Where’s Blab? Has anyone seen him?

(Everyone starts talking again and arguing but getting quieter. Mr. & Mrs. String are still setting up their shop, but they look tired now. Mr. & Mrs. String sell everything made from String. On the window of their shop is some rope in a loop, and their shop sign is half hidden. All we can see is, “You Can Hang”.)

MSS: Let’s take a break Mr. String.

MRS: Good idea Mrs. String. Let’s have some tea.

(They go into their shop and Mr. Blab, the town busybody, comes to the front of the stage from behind the shop.)

B:

What’s all this? (looks at the loop of rope) I think these are bad people. (holding the rope) (reading the sign slowly pointing at the words) You can hang… (holding up the rope next to his head to show the “hanging” action) You can hang!

(Blab takes the rope and rushes over to where the Mayor and the townspeople are. He is so excited or shocked that he can’t speak.)

S2: What’s wrong with Blab?

S3: It looks like he’s seen a ghost!

Calm down Blab! Someone give him some water! 2

(Someone throws water over Blab – this could be polystyrene balls or bits of blue paper… just to make the visual joke).

M:

(Someone hands Blab a glass of water).

(Blab looks like he is going to really spit out the water.)

(Everyone gets behind the mayor and pushes him to the Strings’ house. They keep pushing until they push the mayor into the Strings’ door, then they back away and look at the door nervously.)

3Water to drink! What happened Blab. Spit it out! No! That means tell us what happened, Blab. The… the new people. They’re killers! (a breathing in shocked sound) They are going to kill us all! (holding up the rope again) (panic noises) They’ll burn down our houses! They’ll steal all our money! The world is going to end!! Hi! (everyone stops for a moment and looks at S1) We have to tell them to get out! It’s the mayor’s job. Yes! Wait a minute! I’m the mayor! We know!

MSS: (opens the door) Hello! (super friendly)

(Everyone backs away gasping.)

MRS: I’m sorry, we aren’t open yet.

MSS: Can you come back later?

MRS: Then we can help you.

B:

All:

(Mr. & Mrs. String look at each other. They are confused.)

M:

MSS: But we’re not killers!

MRS: Why do you think that?

(Mr. & Mrs. String go to the sign. They see that it is half covered and laugh.)

MRS: Well it does say, “You can hang…”

All:

(Now pulling out the whole sign.)

4Don’t you mean, hang us?!! Yes! We don’t want any killers in Oaktown. Get out! And don’t come back! Blab saw your sign. And the rope! Boo!

MSS: But it also says, “All your clothes.”

S2:

MSS: Yes, to dry them.

MRS: See…

(Holding up a very large DM showing washing drying on the rope because the rope is actually a clothes line.)

S2: So you’re not going to kill us? Clothes? Hang clothes?

MSS: Of course not!

S3: And you’re not going to steal our money?

MRS: No!

(Everyone looks at S1 in amazement because he/she actually said something more than “Hi”).

MSS: That’s okay.

MRS: Mistakes happen.

MSS: Now, why don’t you all come in for some tea.

MRS: And some homemade chocolate cake.

5(to the townspeople) They don’t look like killers. I guess Blab made a mistake. And we all believed him. I’m so sorry. We should have checked the facts first for ourselves. You shouldn’t listen to rumors you know.

All:

(Everyone goes into Mr. and Mrs. Strings’ house. The last person is S1. As they are going in to the house he/she turns round, waves to the audience and says, “Bye!”)

Script (II) – The Ten Suns

Theme 1:---在天上

旁白:A long, long time ago, ten suns lived in a giant tree in the middle of the ocean. They were the guardians of the Earth.

Sun 1:God warned us never go out together. I wonder why.

Sun 2:I wish the ten of us could go out together and have fun!

旁白:One night, the ten suns had a secret meeting. They decided to disobey God’s order and travel around the Earth together.

Sun 3:Let’s go out together! Maybe God won’t notice.

Sun 4:But God told us…..

Sun 5:We’ll only be gone a few days. Let’s do it!

Theme 2:--在凡間

旁白:While the ten suns were having a great time in the sky, the Earth began to change. It got very hot and dry, the rivers dried up, all the plants died and the animals couldn’t find any food or water.

受苦的人民1:When is the disaster going to end? Can’t God help us?

受苦的人民2:God! Please save us! Save us all!!

Theme 3:--在天庭

旁白:When the God found out what was happening down the Earth. He was furious. He called Ho-Yi, the great archer.

玉皇大帝:I order you to shoot down these suns and save the Earth.

后羿:As you wish!

Theme 4:--后羿射太陽

旁白:Ho-Yi felt sorry for the people. He was determined to shoot down the suns and save the Earth.

后羿:You will pay for this!

旁白:Ho-Yi drew his bow and warned the suns that if they didn’t return to their tree he would shoot them down, but the suns ignored him.

Sun 6:You can’t shoot us down with that bow and arrow of yours.

后羿:Just watch me!

Sun 7:Just try it!

旁白:Ho-Yi was angry. He aimed at one of the suns and shot his arrow. The sun was shot down. The other suns were shocked.

被射到的太陽 8:Oh, no!

Sun 9:Calm down, everyone.

Sun 10:Let’s get out of here!

旁白:Ho-Yi continued shooting. He shot down eight more suns. The last sun was very afraid.

后羿:Just one more to go!

旁白:When there was only one sun left, the Earth returned to normal.

People were happy and started celebrating.

受苦的人民:Great shooting!

受苦的人民:He saved our lives!

Old Man 1:Hold on. There’s still one sun left!

旁白:When Ho-Yi drew his bow and aimed at the last sun, the people stopped him.

Old Man 2:Please don’t shoot the sun. we still need one to look after our crops and give us light.

后羿:Well, OK. If you say so.

旁白:Thanks to Ho-Yi, today there us only one sun in the sky.

All the People:Thank you, Ho-Yi! You’re the best!
