To whom it may concern:

I deem it a great pleasure to recommend XXX, an excellent young researcher in our group, for admission to the xxx Department of Stanford University. I am his graduate advisor and have known him for nearly three years, so I have the opportunity to observe closely and assess justly his work and personality. In my assessment, Mr. X is one of the best students of mine. The biggest asset of him, I think, is his outstanding intellectual potential, which is due to not only his youthful spirit, but also his excellent research ability compared with his classmates or peers, who are all much older than him.

In 1995, I heard his name when he was still an undergraduate, because of his strong ability in studying physics, though his major then was optoelectronics. It is his wish to study in the field between condensed matter physics and optoelectronics, so he learned various advanced theories in both condensed matter and optical physics, sometimes by himself. His master degree work focused on studying transport properties of mesoscopic and nanometer-scale systems. He read many references, and grasped the main points of this topic quickly. His first paper was written just two months after he reached this topic. He has made great efforts to study the electronic transport and Coulomb blockade phenomena of nanotubes and the impact of defects. His idea of “ carbon-nanotube-based electronics” by setting up the analogy between toroidal nanotubes and mesoscopic rings seems valuable and may develop some current ideas.

I have noticed that Mr. X is a quite versatile young boy and has a very broad research interest. He does not pay all his attention to exams; instead, he makes more efforts to extensive study in related fields. He has done much more work than I had expected for him in one year. He had referred to nearly eighty references in his dissertation proposal, and much more in the final dissertation to be finished. He is most interested in quantum well optics and micro-cavity optics, electronic structures and optical response of novel materials, and laser technologies applied to condensed matter. He is currently carrying out research in these topics. With a good command of doing large experiments, he has engaged in many experiment topics as a research assistant in several groups. He is very interested and skilled in doing condensed matter physics experiments, where his work is in close collaboration with his theoretical efforts.

Mr. X is very assiduous, often stays up to very late in the lab, and sometimes even misses his lunch. He is able to grasp the essential concepts in physics research rather than fall into detail

considerations. As to personal character, he is polite, generous, cooperative, and easy of access. His proficiency in English language helps him catch up the newest proceedings in his research topics without any difficulty. All these merits, especially his unusual diligence and intelligence, and his strong capability to study and research independently, benefit him much.

I believe that Mr. X’s outstanding potential and broad research interest will ensure his considerable progresses in condensed matter physics in the future. I strongly approve his plan of pursuing his doctoral studies in XXX at your esteemed department, and recommend him without any reservation.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Professor:

I consider it a great pleasure to recommend to you Mr. X, who has been known to me for a long time as a truly exceptional young student. He enrolled in the special class for gifted children as a 15-year-old student at XXX University, and used only 3 years to finish his 4-year undergraduate program. He entered the Physics department at XXX University in 2001 when he was only 15 years old. In the coming June he is expected to be the youngest graduate student in our department with a M.S. degree.

I was the Dean of the School of Science at XXX Univ. when he entered our school in 2001. he has paid all his efforts to coursed study and research work. As far as I know, he has been successful in almost all the major coursed taken. He began his Master research in the autumn of last year. At that time, much attention was directed to mesoscopic and nanoscale physics, with papers published in <Science> and <Physical Review Letters>. Mr. X is very interested in these areas since they are closely associated with chemistry and materials science. He often exchanges ideas and discusses problems with me. He has a good cooperation spirit with professors in our group. The research subjects he involved in include fabrication techniques, electronic structures and optics properties in semiconductors and carbon nanoscale materials, quantum microelectronics and quantum optics, etc.

Mr. X has done much important research work. He has written 200 papers in the past one year, many of them submitted to or accepted by the top journals. He has proven me extraordinary ability to study physics with engineering ideas. With a slid engineering background and well-trained experimental ability, he concerns not only the modern physical theories but also the experimental chemistry methods in research. His ideas in the “carbon-based chemistry” seem quite valuable. He has mastered the idea of microscopic design of electronic structures. This method enables one to find materials with proper wavelengths in electronics.

Mr. X has the temperament to be a successful scientist. The research topics he interested in are usually the widely discussed new topics in the best journals. He is good at finding problems from research works of others that appear to be perfect. In out seminars he always raised many critical questions and adds further insight into problems. He benefits much from his comprehensive knowledge and his exceptional ability to analyze problems independently and express ideas clearly.

Mr. X has been a teaching assistant in our group and shown his strong responsibility to students. His English proficiency is excellent. He has the ability of general reading in English, which enables him to find out quickly the newest progressed in his research areas from hundreds of new articles each month. His spoken English ability enabled him to be a superior translator in international conferences. He rarely prepared a draft when writing English papers or articles, but just wrote down in once with few mistakes. Most of his papers were written in English.

As a very brilliant young man, Mr. X has an extremely assiduous attitude toward work. Every time I go to the graduates’ room, he can always be found reading articles or making calculations. Sometime I even wonder whether he needs to take a rest. However, I was moved when he told me how diligence and perseverance are indispensable for hard-earned achievements he has had and success in science that he desires. He wishes to work in the area between physics and chemistry. I hope his dream of being an illustrious scientist in this area can become true in the future. Therefore, I will be really delighted to see him realizing his academic goals in the XXX department of XXX University. After his doctoral study in XXX Univ., he will refresh the applied physics research t XXX Univ. with the advanced knowledge learned from you, and your eminent training for an unusual young Chinese graduate will be greatly appreciated by then.

Sincerely,

To whom it may concern:

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am pleased to write this recommendation letter in support of one of my best students, Mr. X’s application to your graduate program. I have been the research and degree advisor for Mr. X’s Master study for one and a half years. I chose him as my Master degree student because I know his is a talented young man. Being a student from one of the Talented Youth Class in XXX Province, he began his college study in Beijing at the age of 14. After getting B.S. in materials physics with the highest honor from XXX University, he came to Peking University, one of the best universities in China, for the Master’s degree in 2001. After the first year graduate study of core courses, he ranked the best (and also the youngest) among the graduate class of more than 40 students.

He began his research in my magneto-optic imaging (MOI) group in Sep. 2002. From then on, we have a lot of chances to work together, he is definitely one of the best students and research assistants I’ve ever met. Working with me only for a month, he was competent as a co-author with me for an invited review paper about the MOI technique and its application, which was published on physics in China. I am really impressed by his learning speed in this complicated field.

The determination of critical current density in high temperature superconductors (HTSC) by MOI is an interesting topic since the discovery of HTSC. Mr. X creatively proposed a new idea of the saturate field for the determination. This new method enables the measurement to be very quick and reliable. His idea also leads to his two new papers, which will soon appear on Chinese Physics Letter, one of the key physical journals of China.

Also worthy to be mentioned is his excellent programming skills of numerical calculation and his superior English proficiency. He probed into different theoretical models of high temperature superconductors, did quick calculation of the distribution of magnetic induction, simulated the motion of vortex lines, and even pointed out some simulation mistakes in the references. Moreover, as you can see from his exceptional scores, he will have no difficulty in communicating with others in an English speaking country.

In my assessment, Mr. X distinguished himself as an outstanding student who has expressed the ability to solve complex problem and the enthusiasm to science. I strongly recommend him to you and believe that your favorable consideration of his application will be highly rewarded.

Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Sincerely yours,

To the esteemed Graduate Admission Committee:

I deem it a great pleasure to recommend Mr. X, one of my favorite students, for admission into your graduate program.

The first time I knew him was on my class of "Fast Presentation with Pencil". When I had finished demonstration and asked the students to practice on their own, his drawing ability attracted me. He grasped the skill more quickly than the other 70 students in the class. In later practices and assignments, he often finished them within little time but with high quality.

His working efficiency was further proved by the work he did in our Architectural Design and Research Institute in 1994. As an assistant designer, he took part in the construction drawing of the XXX Residence Area of Higher Education Bureau. Since the requirements of the client were constantly changing, the drawings needed to be redrawn again and again (at that time, computer aided design was not widely used here ). He just accomplished them effectively and fulfilled the requirements in time.

In his undergraduate diploma design, the College of Science of XXX University, he showed great ability of design in depth and in detail. I remember in designing the exterior of the southwest part of the building, a brick decorative pattern was required. He studied the patterns on all of the old brick buildings in the campus and made a satisfying design which was highly appreciated by the professors later on. Cooperated with the equipment and electric engineers, he also made a distinguished interior design of the report hall.

So in my experience with Mr. X, I was impressed by his effective working manner and ability of design. I think he would be an excellent student in further studies. Therefore, I would like to support him firmly in his quest for more advanced studies in your program, and strongly recommend him to you without and reservation. I would greatly appreciate your favorable consideration of his application.

Yours Sincerely,

To whom it may concern:

I am pleased to recommend Mr. X, an excellent graduate from our department, into your group.

I have known him since 1996 and he has worked in our Lab of XXX at XXX University for 3 years. Mr. X is one of the best students in our department, he is both diligent and independent, intelligent and fast-learning. What impressed me most, is his working attitude and ability.

During the years in our lab, he was mainly responsible for the interior design and acoustic model test of XXX Theater. As a student majored in architecture, he lacked the skills of such physical experiment at first. But I found that as soon as he was assigned this task, he began to study assiduously for relevant knowledge and read many references. Thus he mastered the skill of the experiment in a short time and can even install and debug the whole set of equipment himself. These equipment included some sophisticated acoustic instruments and data processing programs.

In the spring of 1998, his instructor, also his experiment director, had to go to Japan for academic event. In the next half year, he finished the whole experiment independently, including the reverberation time measurement and the pulse response measurement. The result was soon used to direct the interior design of the theater. Also should be mentioned is that from the beginning of the experiment, he took part in it enthusiastically and positively. He helped the layout of the model and made more than 400 exquisite model chairs by hand. All these clearly demonstrate that he has the ability of solving problems effectively, working independently and has organized manner in approaching problems.

Mr. X is a student eager to learn. In order to acquire more knowledge, he began to study Japanese, for many architecture books and journals are published in Japan. In one year, he passed the level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test with a high score. Recently I heard that he has also got excellent record in GRE test. I believe that he would have no trouble in studying abroad.

When he told me he was planning for further research in U.S.A, I encouraged him. His talent and ability would ensure him to do outstanding works. I can state unequivocally that he will be well qualified for graduate studies in your group. I would appreciate it if you could give him your favorable consideration.

Sincerely,

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing with pleasure to recommend Mr. X for acceptance into your graduate

program.

I have been acquainted with Mr. X since 1995, when he did his undergraduate diploma design in our institute. At that time, I found him an excellent student in both working ability and personality. In designing the School of Science of XXX University, he cooperated with other engineers and colleagues effectively and did a remarkable job. With his outstanding performance as an undergraduate, he began his graduate study in XXX Univ. in 1996.

The main project of his graduate research is the acoustic and interior design of XXX Theater, in which I was the leader and Chief Architect of the project. He worked closely with me so I could assess his ability more thoroughly. As a hall used for ballet performance, the reverberation time of the audience hall should be controlled strictly at 1.6 sec. To verify the acoustic qualities of the design, he performed the acoustic model test and brought out important data in directing interior design, thus we can determine the materials used in the hall. He also did a great work in the interior design, created a splendid and elegant atmosphere with the specified materials, and with unique aesthetic feeling.

In my mind, Mr. X is a person of integrity, he is both honest, polite and amicable. He also has broad interests. During the period he worked with me, I found him really familiar with music ( both classic and modern ones ), painting and many other modern arts, like advertisement, movie, etc. In addition to this, he has the capability of learning new things quickly. I once found his computer rendering work of an Ionic Order --- one of the assignments of the CAD course oriented to graduate students --- outstanding among 40 graduates. When he told me that he had just began to learn 3DS two weeks ago and had rendered the work on a 386 PC, I was surprised. I think all these could be essential qualities for a person to become a successful designer.

In summary, Mr. X's potential and broad interest will ensure his considerable progress in advanced study, research and design in your program. I strongly approve his plan of pursuing further studies and recommend him without any reservation.

Sincerely yours,
