A law (good, environmental)

The law that I think is good for environment is the plastic-bag usage law which took effect on June 1st 2008. (颁布日期)

Plastic bags are no longer offered for free when shopping. (内容)

You now need to either bring your own bag or pay for a plastic bag.

I think it is a great law because it aims to protect the environment by reducing white pollution.(影响) I remember the day the law took effect.

It was the weekend and I was at the supermarket buying food for the week.

I normally try to do all my shopping during the weekend, because I don’t have time during the week to go to the supermarket.

I got to the check-out counter with a full basket of food.

The check-out woman asked if I had a bag or if I wanted to purchase a bag.

I had completely forgotten about the new law!

I ended up having to purchase a bag, but instead of buying a plastic bag I bought a reusable canvas bag. Though it was more expensive, I still use that same bag every time I go shopping.

It is pleasing see more and more people bringing their own shopping bags with them to the super market since the law took effect last year.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s an effective way to help reduce the white pollution.

A Wild animal

They are lovely animals in the South Pole.

I like penguins because I went to a polar aquarium and saw them. While we were watching the penguins, the guide told us about them.

She said that penguins lay only one egg each year, and that egg hatching is the father’s responsibility. The penguin mother will jump into the sea and search for food. The penguin father will put the egg between his legs on top of his feet. He must stand in the wind for about 64 days. He can’t eat anything. He can’t drink anything. He can’t move at all.

He will stand there like a statue because the egg is fragile, and if he moves, the egg will break. By the baby penguin hatches, the father will be extremely thin.

As I listened to the guide’s talk, the penguins’ story deeply appealed to me. This is the greatness of nature. This is the responsibility of parents.

an advertisement that you have seen

My favorite TV commercial is a shoe commercial.

A business man rushed to the airport in a taxi and hopped onto an airplane and flew to a city far away from his.

Having arrived at an office building, he got into the lift and rode up to the 20th floor, looking totally nervous. He looked down at his shoes, only to notice that they didn’t match at all.

After he completed the interview, the business man seemed very disappointed. He looked sadly at his mismatched shoes. All of a sudden, his mobile phone rang – he got the job. He was so excited an jumped into the air. The narrator said. “Converse can always take you there.”

A news story that made you happy

Let me share with you a piece of interesting news I heard last weekend.

Last Friday a guy went to a bank in New York and tried to rob it.

Actually I thought he was kind of a nice guy. Just that … you know, he lost everything in the financial crisis: he got fired, he lost his house and his wife. The only thing he had was debt. So he decided to rob the bank and get some money … or maybe to get his revenge on society. But the problem was he didn’t have a gun. So this guy just took a banana and put it in his pocket. He thought that could fool the bank tellers. Then, he entered the bank, approached a teller, told her he had a gun and asked her to give him cash. Of course the police came. This guy got so scared and he pulled out his “gun”, I mean, his banana…The news was interesting. But actually, it was a sad story. Obviously many people have lost their jobs in this crisis. I feel sorry for them.

A party you enjoyed

I’m pretty much not a party person so I seldom go to parties.

However, there is a small party with one friend of mine that I think I can talk about.

It was about a year ago. This senior high classmate of mine just got back from Singapore after 4 years of study.

We were very good friends however, during this period of time we didn’t contact each other very much.

So since he was back, we had a small reunion at his home.

We talked and laughed, and got a little drunk.

We kept up the conversation until 3 in the morning.

What impressed me most is that night was snowing and we just stood there out on the balcony all through it. It was a bit cold though, but nothing has interrupted our catch-up talk.

A piece of equipment (not computers) you use in your life

I just bought a USB disk yesterday. Actually it’s just like any other USB disks. You know, tiny, light but sturdy. It has a storage capacity of 32G.

What I really like about this USB disk is it has a fast transfer rate, fast as lightning.

How do I use it? Well, I just connect it to my computer via a USB port and all set. It’s compatible with both Microsoft and Mac systems…

It’s a keeper.

A foreign food

A foreign food that I would like to try is Sushi, a traditional dish originated in Japan.

Sushi is a dish consisting of cooked rice, which is commonly topped with other ingredients, such as fish or other seafood, or put into rolls.

It’s usually wrapped by a sheet of black seaweed with the help of a bamboo mat.

Nowadays, those seaweed wrapper can be bought in supermarkets or sushi shops. So Sushi lovers can even try to make sushi on their own at home. Besides, people can also eat it in Japanese restaurants too here.

A piece of furniture

My favorite furniture is the armchair in my living room.

My father bought it, but I always sit on it when I want to relax.

It is made of rattan, in traditional style.

When you sit on it, every cell of your body feels refreshed.

Most of the time, I close my eyes and meditate.

The color of the armchair is a light shade of brown, and rattan is an environmentally friendly material.

There is a tea table in front of the chair where I can enjoy my tea time. My whole body can relax completely. It is really marvelous.

An important festival

The Duan Wu Festival has been even more popular since it became a public holiday in China.

This festival has long been associated with a famous poet in history, who was so worried about his country that he drowned himself.

On this festival, people all across China eat rice balls (or in Chinese, zongzih), to pay tribute (贡物) to this poet.

People love those who love their country, right?

Another thing often associated with this festival is the dragon boat races.

It’s like a number of teams rowing and competing against one another.

To be honest, I’ve only watched boat races on TV.

It seems like such races are rare in cities.

But from what I saw on TV, I could tell they were very vibrant events.

As I see it, the Duanwu Festival is about vitality, about the circle of life.

A vehicle you want to buy

A friend of mine bought a Mini Cooper last month. It cost her like 250,000 RMB. But it looks like a 500,000 RMB car, I have to say.

Back then, that friend of mine was looking for a small car with good performance and she got totally impressed by mini. The exterior was so cute, like a chubby baby. The car is sleek too. You know, shiny.

Unlike Beetles, Mini had a powerful engine, which makes it similar to other BMW cars. It can even handle the bumpy roads in the suburbs. It has good gas mileage as well. That’s definitely good news when the petrol price is still sky-high here in China.

It looked small, but the interior turned out to be very spacious. The backseats were probably only good for kids, though. You can park it anywhere because of its small size, which is really nice in a city where there are not enough parking spaces.

I’m starting to envy my friend. I’m sure I’ll buy a Mini too coz it’s just so fun. It’s almost like if you test-drive a Min, you’ll buy it
