INTRODUCTION

When talking about an argument, we might think of it as a dispute involving people having opposing views or opinions. For example, two cars have collided in the street, and the drivers get out of their cars and start arguing over whose fault it was. At first, they try to reason, but later they lose their tempers and start quarrelling. At this point, the argument is based on emotion rather than reasoning. Consequently, the original focus is lost, and the two drivers are unlikely to get the dispute solved. The meaning of what we call argument is different from the above example. First of all, it may appeal to emotion, but it never becomes too emotional or angry. Secondly, it has a single focus throughout, i.e. a main argument (proposition). Thirdly, it uses reasoning in developing the main argument, by presenting logical proof, such as facts, statistics, authoritative opinions, etc.

As the purpose of argumentation is to convince or persuade people to accept the Writer’s views or opinions, so as to take actions accordingly, writers of argumentative or persuasive writings may employ different expository techniques to clarify, or to strengthen their viewpoints. To this end, they may use techniques such as cause and effect, comparison and contrast, classification, and process analysis. It is exposition with an additional purpose of convincing or persuading.
