Outline

Thesis Statement: The Red and the Black was Stendhal’s finest novel. Through the

novel, we can analyze a character ——Julian Sorel——the son of a carpenter, who is inspired by the writings of Napoleon to conquer the heights of society. He is intelligent and good-looking, the epitome of a romantic hero with he large, dark eyes. More important, he has an unshakable determination to undergo a thousand deaths rather than fail to achieve success. Julian Sorel is, of course, a great creation.

Ⅰ. In this novel, what can we conclude in comparison with the lifetime and eras of Stendhal.

Ⅱ. Though the reading of Julian, Madame de Renal, and Mathilde de la Mole, we are caught up in Julian’s precarious career, with his love affairs and mishaps, and with adorable, tempestuous Mathilde and poor Madame de renal.

A. We are drawn to Julian’s egotism, so like our own, laugh when Julian falls off his horse or fights a duel, and are generally fascinated by the story and the brilliance and candor of its understanding of human motivation.

B. This accounts for the side of Julian that is calculating, flattering, insincere, and inwardly hostile even to people who intend to help and love him ——indeed, he is an early example of an antihero of whom, at first, even Stendhal cannot approve.

C. But there is a side of Julian that is loving despite himself, that is deservedly proud

of his superiority to many, if not most, people in the ranks above him, and who takes pleasure in the pleasures of life with natural spontaneity. It is his most

admirable side, when he finally becomes truthful and sincere and listen to his own heart, that dooms him, an outcome that of course reflect Stendhal’s cynical view of a world where hypocrisy, scheming, wealth and rank are necessary to success. Ⅲ. At pains to demonstrate Julian’s muddle of inexperience, romantic delusion and ambition, Stendhal falls under the spell of his own, perhaps rather autobiographical, creation.

Conclusion: the novel is a powerful character study of Julian Sorel, an ambitious young man who uses seduction as a tool for advancement. Julian’s failure to succeed in French society and his betrayal by M. Valadon present a foreboding distrust of the victorious liberal bourgeoisie. Would the death of the aristocracy mark the death of French society? Stendhal's comparison of the gamble of revolution to the red and black of a roulette wheel, presents a harrowing glimpse of the volatility of French politics--a vision that still fascinates readers today.
