China

China has condemned a visit by scores of Japanese politicians to the Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo. The Foreign Ministry called on Japanese politicians to be more responsible.

Hong Lei, Spokesman, Chinese Foreign Ministry said, "China’s

position on this issue has been clear-cut and consistent: we urge the Japanese side to face squarely and reflect upon history and strictly abide by its solemn statements and pledges regarding historical issues, and face the international community in a responsible manner."

Hong Lei said the Japanese government’s stance on the shrine reflects whether the country can seriously acknowledge its history of aggressive militarism and respect the feelings of its victims. Opposition leader Shinzo Abe visited the Yasukuni shrine on Wednesday, followed by 67 lawmakers including two Cabinet ministers on Thursday.

The two ministers are Transport Minister Yuichiro Hata and Postal Reform Minister Mikio Shimoji. The Yasukuni Shrine honours two and half million Japanese war dead, including 14 class A war criminals. It’s seen as a symbol of Japan’s past militarism against its Asian neighbours including China and South Korea.

AND to other news:

An 11-week-old panda cub at San Diego Zoo, in California, has taken some tentative baby steps during a morning veterinary examination.

P.K. Robbins, senior veterinarian of San Diego Zoo, said, "I would say he’s making progress. He’s kind of at that awkward toddler stage where some limbs are working better than others. Certainly the front legs want to get up and go but the back legs sort of got a little bit left behind. But he’s definitely learning, he’s getting those skill sets that he needs and he’s a pretty active little dude."

The as-of -yet unnamed male cub is expected to be able to walk on all four legs in a few weeks, but it will still be at least a few more months before he is mobile enough to venture into the exhibit. Only 1,600 giant pandas are believed to exist in the wild, and the species

continues to be threatened by habitat loss. San Diego Zoo Global, in conjunction with Chinese panda experts, continues to work on science-based panda conservation programs.

Robot flowers that flex and blossom are one of the highlights at this year’s Kinetica Museum’s exhibition in London. The kinetic movement mixes technology, science and art to create eye-catching and interactive pieces for both children and adults.

These robot flowers respond to light and dark just like the real thing. As your hand passes the light sensors the petals unfurl, just as they would open to face the morning sun.

Diane Harris, Kinetica Museum, London, said, "So Justin Godyer’s Adaptive Bloom is an interactive work and it sets flowers in motion, so you are almost like controlling the light and the dark. And you become the sun and the night by your hand gesture."

This is one of over 30 works being showcased at a private space in east London. The Kinetica Museum hosts an annual art fair promoting the world of Kinetic art - where science and technology meet the art world.

Many of the pieces in Kinetica invite audience participation, but some just make compulsive viewing.

These microscopic, magnetic, mechanical works by a French artist seem to defy gravity. The cogs spin around the mirrored surface as if by magic. Beneath the surface a spinning motorised magnet within a glass jar reveals the secret to the trick.

There isn’t much soothing about this piece named "Limbo", but it is addictive to watch the table tennis ball trapped in perpetual motion, but never getting anywhere.

Alexander Berchert, Kinetic artist, said, "I got inspired originally by a lady bug crawling up my hand and everybody has done this before, just to place a hand in front of it and again and again and the bug just seems to keep moving without ever getting anywhere. I found this very interesting, I thought I’d like to represent that mechanically," says Berchert.

Like all Kinetic artists, he gets inspiration from the genius behind everyday objects and claims even a toaster can fascinate him.

Although the showcase is not yet open to the public, viewings can be arranged by appointment at the moment, and all items will be on auction to raise funds for the Kinetica Museum itself, a Non-Profit Organization.

Travel

And we turn out to Australia :

Sydney’s Sea Life Aquarium re-opened on Monday, after a 10 million US dollar refurbishment over nine months. The new oceanarium now displays a total of 13,000 animals of 700 different species in eight million litres of water.

The main feature of the re-opening was the "shark walk", a glass viewing area that displays over 50 sharks. In the week leading up to the opening, workers used cranes to lift some of the heavier creatures into their new home. The re-opening also unveiled 14 newly-themed areas, including the Tropical Bay of Rays, Discovery Rockpool, Mangrove Swamps, South Coast Shipwreck, and Dugong Island.
