Subject: Students should choose fields of study which more likely lead to jobs
1. Today’s parents attach too much importance to the job prospects of their children’s education.
2. However, empirical evidence suggests that young people are more likely to succeed in a career that
interests them.
The statement that students should base their choice of study on the availability of jobs is generally incomplete and inaccurate in my viewpoint. Admittedly, when choosing the field of study, one should take career expectation into consideration. Whether jobs in a field are available is not predominant in the decision of study fields. Instead, one should focus more on intrinsic interest and talent and decide which field to study independently.
At first glance, the balance of empirical evidence would seem to lend considerable credence to the speaker's claim. Nowadays, one of the most popular fields of study for students is the finance which is characterized by a relative glut of job opportunities. Graduates with degrees in science or engineering often abandon their chosen fields because they prefer more "practical careers in search of better job opportunities. However, upon further reflection it will be clear that the large cluster in the job market around certain industries and types of work does not necessarily mean students should all chase those popular areas.
In view of the rapid development of technology and the intense competition in today’s society, the statement is actually derived from people‘s anxiety about future and pursuit for stability in life. And this point of view has so widespread an effect that students, when they are choosing a field of study, are often faced with much pressure from their parents and teachers as well as educational institutions that hold the stance that one should give priority to the availability of jobs. As a result, students are forced to believe that they should choose a field of study in which jobs are plenty. However, this statement is unreasonable because it is against the basic aim of education. Besides developing skills and preparing for a job, we educate ourselves to gain the ability to learn more about the world and the true values of our lives, which are surely more important than just surviving and having a job.
Consequently, when choosing a field of study, one should take more factors into consideration. As is widely accepted, everyone has certain natural or innate urges and incentives, which, if satisfied, will provide constant and significant power for learning and exploring. Therefore, subjects which are relevant to students’ nature will more likely attract them and there is greater possibility that students will obtain greater achievement in those fields of study. In view of this, students should choose fields of study which they take an extreme interest in and consider as a life-time pursuit. Furthermore, when making a decision of future study field, students should take an examination of their abilities. They should figure out where they strengths and weaknesses lie respectively. What if one certain field that can lead to plenty jobs and is really attractive is just beyond one’s capability? There’s no doubt that incompatibility in a field will limit one’s development and make one’s life miserable. With the balance among different factors, one may choose a subject more suitable for further self-development.
In sum, focus on availability of jobs only when students choose a field of study is inappropriate. Even if a field leads to plenty jobs, this may not last long in view of the complicated economic situation, thus won’t guarantee the job opportunity in the future. Hence, That is to say, students should base their choice not only on their interest but also on their ability to have a more fulfilled life.
