In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

我的作文

The reading passage indicates that a four-day work week will be better because it increases company profits, employment and living quality of employees.(可以不这么具体) However, the lecturer fully defutes all three points one by one.

First, the reading shows that more alerted employees will make less errors, therefore increasing company benefits. However, the lecturer points out that since the company will hire more people, they will spend more on training, medicare, office space and computers Second, the reading reveals that more employees will be hired to make up for the 20% workload of original employees. However, the lecturer thinks this increase will never come true since company will not be willing to spend much more as is mentioned in the first point. Instead, they will try every means to increase the workload of original employees to make up for the loss of work 加which makes the work more unpleasant. | They will raise their expectations on their employees and hope that after a three-day break, they will be better-prepared for a heavier workload(可以删除). In a word, they will not make up for the loss of workload by hiring additional employees. Third, not like what is mentioned by the reading passage, the life quality of employees will not be imporved. As is mentioned by the lecturer, employees who work in a four-day work week will have lower job stability and promotion since their productivity will be reduced and the risk of unemployment will increase 加 which will harm their life quality. For instance, the company tend to promote a five-day work week employee to be supervisors or managers because they can supervise the overall operation of the company with more time and coverage(可以删).

In the nutshell, a four-day work week will not increase benefits of the company. Neither will it improve employment or employee's living standard. The lecturer defutes all the advantages of a four-day work week mentioned in the reading passage with his analysis.(可以删除)

In the reading passage, the writer believes that the four-day work system will benefit the economy based on three evidences. However, in the lecture, the professor has different views on these evidences, and he casts doubt on the reading passage by using a number of points.

First of all, according to the reading passage, four-day workweek will increase the company profits as a result of the employees make fewer errors in their works.(并且payroll不变)In contrast, the professor indicates that this system will definitely increase the cost of company, because the company have(has)to spend a lot of money on training new employees, buying new equipment, such as office equipment(office space)and computers, all of this will cut down the company's profits.

In addition, unlike the writer's opinion that the shortened workweek system will improve the economy condition(文章中没有提到会改善经济形势),the professor holds the idea that the shortened workweek won't reduce unemployment rates, instead, the company will impose their employees to do the same task in four days(five day), hence there will no additional job be provided and the current job will be more dissatisfactory(unpleasant).

Finally, referring to improve employees’ lives, the writer states that employees will have more free time in the four-day workweek system and this will improve the quality of their lives. In the meantime, the professor demonstrates that the shortened workweek is harmful for the employees' advance carrier. They will be more likely to lose their job than the full-time worker. Consequence, it will, in fact, risk the employees' life quality.

最后,要是再加上一个结尾就更好了~
