One evening in November, Dr. Berlin received a telephone call from Mrs. Green. "Please, Dr. Berlin, come to my house. I had 5000 dollars on my desk and now it is gone. "

Dr. Berlin arrived at Mrs. Green's house at eight o'clock. First he asked Mrs. Green, "When did you see the money last?"

"At seven o' clock. I put it on my desk in my living room. Then I went to wash my hair. I came back at seven thirty and the money was gone."

"I see." Dr. Berlin said. "Were you alone in the house?"

"No. My sister's son Jack is here, too." Then Dr. Berlin and Mrs. Green went to Jack's room.

"Please, sit down," Jack said. Dr. Berlin sat on the only chair in the room, and the chair was cold. He also saw some books on the ground near his feet.

"What have you been doing this evening?" Dr. Berlin asked.

"I came home at six-thirty, and went right to my room. I've been sitting in that chair and reading all the evening. I never got up and I never left the room. Maybe somebody came into the house and took my aunt's money." After hearing that, Dr. Berlin was clear about who had taken the money.

One day Bill went to eat at a restaurant in London. Suddenly a young woman sat down beside him. Bill could not think what she wanted. She did not look very happy. Bill asked her what was wrong. "My husband and I wanted to meet here for lunch at 12, " she said at last, "but he hasn't come."

She said, "A thieftook away a lot of coins from a shop a few days ago. The police caught him but they didn't find any coins."

Then Jim went on digging and found some more coins, but just when he began to dig, he felt something cold in his trousers. It came down one of his legs. He put his hand down quickly-and the coin came into his hand. Now he knew there was a hole in his pocket.

Passage 15

Once a man with the name Grant found a box of old papers in a room at the top of his house. He burnt most of them, for he didn't like old things very much. But one of these papers was an old letter. At the bottom of the letter was the name of a famous writer.

"When this letter was written," said Grant, "no one knew about the writer. But now everyone knows him. Some people like to buy letters like this. I may be able to get a lot of money for this letter if I sell it to the right man."

But there were a lot of dirty marks all over the letter.

"It doesn't look nice," he thought, "No one wants to buy a letter if it's dirty. I'll have to clean it first." So he took a piece of cloth and some water and cleaned the letter. He worked hard and took a lot of care. At last the letter looked new and he was very pleased with his work.

"Now it looks very nice," he said to himself. "I'll be able to sell it for a lot of money."

He took the letter to shop in London where old papers of this kind were bought and sold.

"I want to sell this letter," Grant said to the man in the shop. "It was written by a famous writer. You know about these things. How much will you give me for it?"

The man looked at the letter for a long time.

"I'll give you two pounds for it." he said at last.

"Only two pounds!" said Grant, "But people pay ten pounds for a letter like this. And just look! I've even cleaned it to make it look nice."

"I can see that," said the man. "That's the trouble. People who buy old papers like them to be dirty!" 317w

Linda was a few minutes late, and Wilson had left the office when she got there. His secretary told her he would be back in a few minutes. She had to sit down and wait for a few minutes in the outer office.

"I shall never get this job," she told herself. For a moment she wanted to run out of the building. Just then, Wilson came through the door and hurried into his office. A few minutes later his secretary took Linda in and introduced her.

Linda apologized for being late. Wilson did not seem to mind. They talked freely for a few seconds and then got down to business. He took out her letter of application.

"You've never worked in radio or television before, have you?" Linda answered that she was afraid she hadn't. Now she was even more sure that she would not get the job. Wilson asked her a few more questions.

To her surprise, he seemed impressed with her other qualifications. She was even more surprised when he asked her if she could start soon. "I wonder if you mind starting next month?" he asked with a smile. It seemed she had got the job after all.

A fine-looking gentleman sat down in the main dining-room of an expensive hotel. He ordered a grand meal and spent two hours enjoying himself. After the bill came, the man sent for the head waiter.

Hanaca was the daughter of a samurai who made her wear a strange, wide-brimmed hat that covered her face. Her father had put it on her head just before he died and no one was able to take it off.

Everyone in the town laughed at Hanaca because of her hat and this made her unhappy. One day, she decided she did not want to live in the town any longer, so she left. She walked a long way until she came to a city. There she found work in the Emperor's palace.

But again she was laughed at, and the other palace workers behaved badly toward her. One day, the Emperor's son found Hanaca crying. He asked her what was the matter, and when she told him, he felt so sorry for her that he decided to marry her.

The Emperor was very angry when he heard about this, and he sent Hanaca away from the palace. Sadly, she walked toward the palace gates. Just as she reached them, a great wind blew her wide-brimmed hat off her head.

Now everyone could see her face. Not only was she extremely beautiful, but she was wearing many precious jewels in her hair. Then one of the Emperor's ministers realized she was the daughter of a famous samurai. He told the Emperor to apologize to Hanaca and allowed his son to marry her.

It was very difficult to find jobs in the northeast of England and when John lost his, he found it impossible to get a new one.
