Essay 3

Every human society has always developed along with the progress of science and technology. However, a succession of technological revolutions has never removed the need for personal characteristics and thinking ability. To some extent, I agree that the character of an individual and ability to think are more essential than the technology itself.

First of all, technological revolutions cannot replace the need for character in the individual, because everyone has his own personality and characteristic, which are unsubstitutable by the technology and distinguish an individual from others. Just as there are no exactly the same leaves in the earth, an individual develops his unique character because of his distinctive genes, different educational background and personal experience, and obviously this is necessary for both the individual himself/herself and the whole society. Thank to a wide variety of different personalities of people, we have opportunities to fulfill our unique potential and to devote ourselves to the various fields that we are interested in. As a result, the world can be diversified and colorful but not dull and boring, the society can develop to a versatile complex but not an inflexible simplex, and our life can be filled with novelties and challenges. The various kinds of cultures, religions and beliefs and manners and customs are actually derived from the different kinds of characteristics of people. A well-known saying of Romain Rolland is that “Everyone owns his hidden essence that is different from any other people, it makes a person has his own smell.” So it seems to me that no matter how the science and technology develop, the need for character in the individual is very important and indispensable.

Second, technological advance can help people solve problems, however, it could not substitute people to think, at lease for the time being,. French philosopher Rene Descartes once said, “I think, therefore I am.” Although this view is known as idealism, it can reflect the importance of thinking activities to the survival and development of an individual, and eventually the evolution of the society. One point to note is that the most important factor that makes human beings different from animals is their ability to think, which is the essential and inherent request for human. Please don’t forget that technology is only the tools or mechanism to resolve problems and serve people for convenience, in another words, it does not have the ability to think like human, but only can execute the program or model invented and created by human being. Another reason is that what we need to resolve for a problem in nowadays requires even more critical and sophisticated thinking than that in the past. Despite the fact that in the spate of technological revolution, the cerebration and human effort would surely reduce. This does not mean that, humans would stop thinking for emerging problems, or for the betterment of technology. Citing an example to bolster the above stated fact, when the first computer came into existence, it was huge and not much powerful, the demand for improving this “wonder machine” has motivated numerous scientists and engineers to think how to produce a smarter computer, and this process has led to an amazing growth in this field. It is thus clear to observe that human ability to cogitate never ceases; rather it conquers new challenges

and produces significant improvements because "Perfection is almost attainable, not totally".

In summary, today humans have indeed become dependent on technology, but the need for character in the individual and the cogitation of human mind would never reach an end.
