南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

An Analysis of the Language Characteristics of Journalistic English

1. Introduction

1.1 Significance of the Study

With increasing international communication between China and other countries of the world,language study is becoming an inevitable thing in our daily life, especially nowadays,as English has been widely used as an international language and people need more information on the language and the ways in which it is used.Language plays a critical role in social intervention and is an important medium in the transmission of cultural and social values.Reading English newspapers give us an opportunity to be dipped into new things and stories, and to pick up language.They are the primary material from which people receive new information. Newspapers have a rich mixture of contents including news, advice, comics, opinions and data.

The language used in English newspapers has its unique features and is quite different from general English articles to some extent. That is why so many people feel English news difficult and abandon it. Then how can we cope with such linguistic problems to read the English news effectively and understand it accurately? The main purpose of this paper is to increase reader’s ability to read English news. It is hoped that this paper will be particularly useful to those who have strong interest in reading English news.

1.2 Structure of the Paper

Chapter One is a brief introduction which proposes the significance of the study and the structural arrangement of the paper.

Chapter Two deals with the basic elements of news,such as definition of the news.However, the general features of English news reports will be emphasized throughout the paper.

Chapter Three touches heavily on the two major elements of the news- the headline and the lead.The headline plays a role in attracting the attention of the readers and luring them to read on, so its linguistic features will be our major focus.The characteristics of the lead will be discussed from four aspects: functions of the lead,five W’s and H, classification of the lead and language characteristics of the lead.

Chapter Four is the main part of the paper and lists the linguistic features of English news at lexical, syntactic and context levels.

2

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

Chapter Five summarizes the previous study.At the same time, it points out that reading English news is an effective way to learn modem English and by mastering some characteristics of English news we can understand the English news accurately.Moreover, it points out the inadequacy of the study in the hope that more researches should be carried out in this field.

2. Definitions of News and General Characteristics of English newspapers

To figure out the features of news,it is necessary to know what news is.The word “News” derives from Greek.In American reporter Joest’s opinions, the word “News” comes from the word ‘‘New”. It is clear that freshness is one of the most essential features of news.Typical definitions of news suggested by journalists include "news is the same thing happening to different people,” “news is what the editor thinks is news,’’ or news is “what I’m interested in”.

In fact,there is no single all-encompassing definition of news because the elements that constitute it are constantly changing, and so are the women and men who select it for print, broadcast and other sources such as the Internet.The dramatic social, economic, political and technological changes sweeping the world continue to have a profound impact on what is considered news today, just as they have had on the readers and the way readers get the news.

From the definitions of news mentioned above.It is not difficult for us to understand the features of news.According to Zheng Baowei

natures:

(1) News must be true.News is the report of facts which are the basis of news.Without facts there would be no news.Moreover, the aim of news is to help people get to know the change of the world. people may be able to make prompt judgments and then take proper actions.This is the basic function of News, that is, news must reflect the original truly so as to provide people with the right and reliable information.That news must be true is the fundamental feature of news, which differentiates news from 1iterature.

(2) News must be new. It is said that the word “news” comes the word “new.” News is a kind of information conveyed to people,but it is not the common information;instead it is about the things in its newest state.In other words, only those new things, new problems, new people, new ideas and new experiences can become news. That news must be new is another fundamental feature of news, which differentiates news from history. [2:55], news has the following four distinctive

3

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

(3) News must be timely.If the true and new facts were not released timely, news would become old and valueless.Therefore, the mass mesa must disclose the facts to the masses as soon as possible.Any delay or postpone should be avoided.

(4) News must be made known to the public.In the modem society, the news media are the most important and most frequently used channel for people to get to know the outside world.Everyday newspapers, radio broadcasts and TV continuously release a large amount of news, and all the news is open to the public. It is obvious to see that everyone has access to the news, regardless of his intelligence and social status

As Journalistic English is different from other English articles, it has some general characteristics

(A) Familiarity

English newspapers use a wide range of words in sports, military, business, technology, gambling, literature, entertainment and other aspects, such as artificial breeding (artificial insemination training) used in medicine, kickback (commission) used in economy, and scud missile (scud missiles) used in military, honey trap (notorious), and so on, with the aim to reflect integration of modern journalistic language and contemporary realities of modern life, trying to meet a variety of reading interest, arousing the reader's familiarity .

(B) Easy to understand

Visualized vocabulary and spoken English recently emerged in the title of newspapers not only make the title lively but sometimes act as a pun and make it fun. For instance there is an article in Daily Star entitled World Eyes Mid-East Peace Talks, in which the report used Eyes to mean concern and did not use the word observes or watches, which makes the headline a dapper, precise, vivid image.

(C) Simplicity and vividness

Compare the following three news reports on the same accident:

1. Police Chief J. W. Carmichael announced today two children were killed outside Prospect Park at Jackson Ave. And 16 St., NW, when a "recklessly driven" automobile jumped the curb near where they are playing at 2 p. m and ran them down.

2. Two children were killed and 12 others injured today when an automobile hit them outside Prospect Park. th

4

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

3. Two children at play were killed and 12 others injured today when a speeding sports car jumped the curb outside Prospect Park and ran them down.

(D) A human face

One of the criteria in news reports is humane. For example, In order to affect readers, the journalist gives a number of details which have no direct contact with the event, such as the driver's age, family situation, so as to arouse parental love. It even quotes the conversation in which the medical correspondent James Wilkinson talks about survival of "Siamese twins". These are very humane, completely arousing the reader's interest. (E) Objectivity

Authenticity is the cornerstone of news; false news will inevitably lose the trust of the reader. Through extensive use of direct quotations and indirect quotations, newspapers try to use the least adjectives to increase its authenticity and vitality, which also shows the objective position of authors. The report has only 9 sentences, including titles; however it has 9 words synonymous with “say” and 7 sentences, respectively, which are direct quotations or indirect quotations. The quote usage has reached 89%. It can be said that ultimately that any news report cannot lack the use of quotations.

3. Headline and Lead

A piece of English news consists mainly of three parts:headline,lead and body Attention is focused more strongly on the former two parts in this chapter.Usually, when reading English news,it is possible for readers to get the main idea of the story through skimming the headline and lead.This is therefore another reason why we analyze the features of the headline and lead.

3.1 Headline

News title is an integral part of the report. It uses concise words to convey the most important information or the most noteworthy content, so that readers can fully understand the most important or most interesting content. Therefore, it is necessary for us to analyze the features of the news headline.

3.1.1 Grammatical Features of Headline

For the purpose to save space and to attract readers , reporters usually make use of omission , tense and voice.

5

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

A. Omission.

(1) the omission of articles. For example:

Paris poor struggle to find homes

(=The Paris poor struggle to find homes)

(2) the omission of prepositions. For example:

Jiang meets mathematicians

(= Jiang met with mathematicians)

(3) the omission of link verbs. For example:

THREE DEAD AFTER INHALING OVEN GAS

(= THREE ARE DEAD AFTER INHALING OVEN GAS)

(4) the omission of conjunctions. For example:

US, VIETNAM RESUME TALKS

(= THE UNITED STATES AND VIETNAM RESUME TALKS)

B. Simplification of tense

The use of verbs in headlines adds difficulty to newspaper readers as the state of verbs in English news headlines changes sometimes. Headlines must be concise, which cannot apply all the tenses to convey news and the facts. To this end, Typically, there are three types of verb tenses commonly used in English News headlines: the present tense, the future tense and the present progressive tense

(1) use of the present tense

This will not only serve the purpose of saving space, but also gives a sense of realism and direct sense. For example:

Nations solve border rifts (= Nations have solved border rifts)

Negotiations complicated (= Negotiations have been complicated)

(2) use of the infinitive

For the purpose of conciseness, the infinitive is often used in the function of the simple future tense.

Japan to help elderly jobless

(=Japan is to help elderly jobless)

-- The Financial Times, Jan.27,2000

(3) use of the present participle

6

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

The present participle is used to express what is happening. For example:

Deposits, loans rising in HK

(Deposits and loans are rising in HK)

3.1.2 The lexical features of English news headlines

For the purpose to save space and make the headline more striking and eye-catching,reporters use a great number of abbreviations in headlines. In order to convey more news content within a limited space, news editors commonly use acronyms and abbreviated words in the title.

A. acronyms

An acronym is a new word which is formed by the first letter of the name of an organization, institutions, and political parties. Although abbreviations appear frequently in the title, the full name of the acronym, whether common or unfamiliar, will appear in the body.

(1) The names of organizations

NPC: National People's Congress NPC

GNP: Gross National Product Gross National Product

MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT

(2) The names of professions or titles

EE (electrical engineer)

DJ=disc jockey

JP=Justice of the Peace

TP=traffic police

B. use of clipping words

(1) Clipping the front part of the word

phone=telephone电话

copter=helicopter直升飞机

quake=earthquake地震

(2) Clipping the back part of the word

ad=advertisement广告 auto=automobile汽车

demo=demonstration示威游行 disco=discotheque迪斯科舞曲

exec=executive董事、主任 expo=exposition展览会

memo=memorandum备忘录 rood=modem现代的 [5:69]

7

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

pic=picture图片;照片;电影 pro=professional专业人员

(3) Clipping both the front and back part of the word

flu=influenza流感 age=refrigerator冰箱

tec=detective侦探

(4) Clipping the middle part of the word

com’1=commercial 商业的

C’wealth=Commonwealth英联邦

(5) Clipping irregularly

bike=bicycle自行车

bookie=bookmaker编者

3.2 Lead

3.2.1 Definition and function

The news lead refers to the first paragraph of a news report, containing the essential information of the reported event and telling the readers what to expect. It is common that the most sacred words in any story are always the first ones. The opening sentence — the lead — is what lures the reader into the story.It is the reason why readers should go on with the story.

When we talk about the lead, we shall first of all discuss the basic elements contained in the lead, which are usually five W’S and H, for they matters a lot as to the lead and newsworthy. Every news story should answer the questions: Who? What? When? Where? That’s the five W’S and H .They should be answered as quickly as possible for the reader through the lead.

3.2.2

Who: For some stories, th Five W’S and H

(1) e newsmaker is important to the lead if he is a famous person. If he is not prominent, it might not be so important and will even not be concluded in the lead. Often, however, this is the main source of your information when you read a news report and it must be a critical element to the lead.

(2) What: What happened, what is happening, or what will happen is essential to most leads, what most readers want to know.

(3) When: “When” appears automatically in most leads,but it is not often the most

8

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion important part. Time is a defining feature of the nature of news, a major constraint in newsgathering procedures, and a decisive factor of the structure of news discourse.

(4) Where: the place where the story happens is not usually as important as other elements, but it can be if the location of the story is your objective.In most cases, the location’s importance simply depends on the story.

3.2.3 Classification of lead

As there are a number of kinds of news, it is natural that the different leads are applied in different news. Usually, news leads have two styles: summary lead and interest lead.

Summary lead shall deliver the most important fact; sometimes it even needs to cover as many elements as possible. This kind of lead is often applied in serious political news which is called hard news. For example:

US President George W. Bush will be in China on a working visit from February 21 to 22 at the invitation of President Jiang Zemin. In Bush's three-nation Asia tour,he will visit Japan and the Republic of Korea before traveling to China.[8] (Bush Invited to Beijing, 21st Century School Edition, January 21,2002).

This lead covers four elements including “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, which is a typical summary lead.

Interest leads are always used to arouse readers’ interest, which suit feature news like people,events,sightseeing,experience or editorial and profile, which is called soft news. For instance:

One day they are crawling around in the sandbox;The next day they're prowling the Internet. Teens like to think of themselves as all grown up— but they still need plenty of support and guidance from parents.[9]

3.2.4 Structure

As for sentence structure,most leads only consist of a single sentence,and that sentence usually follows the normal rules for punctuation, grammar, word usage and verb tense.

4. Linguistic Features of News English

4.1 The lexical features

English journalistic style uses the largest range of English words. Words in almost

9

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion all sectors of society are adopted in news reports and news reviews. However, in order to expand the publicity, to attract as many readers as possible and to report timely on the events in society, newspapers have to seek the novelty of words, resulting in a large number of so-called “Journalistic Words”, and developing unique features in vocabulary. Its main features are as follows:

4.1.1 use of acronyms and abbreviated words

Since World War II, especially in recent years, a large number of English abbreviations and abbreviated words have emerged. Those abbreviations and abbreviated words that have been accepted by readers often appear in English newspapers, especially shortened forms of organizations. Usually, if those abbreviations used in the title appear in the text for the first time, they will be written in full name, but then they will be used in abbreviations.

OPEC = the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries

4.1.2 Borrowed words

1. words borrowed from other fields

Another lexical feature of English newspaper is the extensive borrowed words from words of science and technology, sports, military, business, gambling and literature, entertainment and other aspects. The aim is to try to reflect the "fusion" of contemporary realities of modern life and news language, to add expression, to try to meet a variety of reading interest, to arouse intimacy of all kinds of readers. Especially new words of science and technology, whether they are the original meaning or transferred meaning, will give the reader a fresh feeling. For example:

Canada to bill Russia =Canada will claim indemnity

Farm price marathon opens in Brussels =Farm price meeting that last long opens in Brussels

2. words borrowed from other languages

In news report, when it refers to foreign things, especially the newly emerging things, words mixed with some foreign words are often used to be more novel, and to arouse the reader's attention and interest. For example:

From Russian:

glasnost公开性;开放

intelligentsia知识分子;知识界

10

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

samizdat地下出版物

4. 1. 3 use of slangs

There is an increasing tendency to use slangs, aiming to be novel and meet reading taste. For example: Pioneer colleges face axe

Iraq gets OK to sell 1.6 billion in oil.

Tourism up and violence off, Jamaica says. Buck 美元影响 Clout 属于社会经济低层次的 Down—scale 保持中立;不表态

4.1.4 creating new words

With the continuous development of science and technology and appearance of new things, a large number of created words have emerged in the news. Meanwhile, some journalists would use coinage in their news reports, with the pursuit of being different. Some old words need new meaning as the world evolves. For example:

Dove →conciliator party

Angel →things seldom happen.

Google →gather information

Mouse potato → people who are addicted to the Internet

4.1.5 Vague words

In general, news reports should provide accurate figures and information, but why vague words often appear in news reports? In the news discourse, in order to abide by principles of truth, objectiveness and efficiency, such as to save time or avoid reporting inaccurate numbers, you need to use vague words. Moreover, the human cognitive system is easier to accept and understand the information expressed by vague language. [10:65] For example:

In the past few years, he has become addicted to classical music—especially Haydn and the composers of nineteenth-century Russia—and he now has a collection of 2,500 LPs and cassettes. [11]

4.2 The syntactic features

4.2.1 Loose sentence structure

Most sentences in the news are always long sentence, with one sentence in one paragraph. Journalists are always trying to shorten the sentence, to report as many facts as possible,

11

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion to provide as much knowledge as possible. At the same time, due to hasty writing for dispatch, it is often too late to add or make changes, when they think of new circumstances and background materials. As a result, sentence structure seems a little loose and the reader is sometimes unclear about which part of the sentence the inserted words modify. For example:

Mr. Carter said that the Soviet leader's response to the message, sent on Friday, had been inadequate.

In the sentence sent on Friday is inserted in the middle of the sentence. Whether it modifies the message, or the Soviet leader's response, people would spend some time to figure it out.

4.2.2 Extensive use of tenses

In news reports, journalists often write the action as if it is under way by an extensive use of tenses. The purpose is to give the reader a feeling of freshness. For example: Today some of those troops are contending that their illnesses, such as cancer and genetic problems, stem from the radiation absorbed at the test shots 26 years ago. (The Washington Post)

Republican leaders, elated and surprised at the dimensions of their victory on Tuesday, were calling the 1980 election a political watershed. (The New York Times)

In the news reports, the verb ‘call’ and ‘contend’ actually are past actions, and these actions do not last long, but the reporters used the present and past continuous tense. Its purpose is to make the action under way so as to give the reader a feeling of freshness.

However, due to the fact that most of the news have already occurred, therefore, it is common to use the past tense. For example:

New York, Sunday – One man died and nine others were injured when a helicopter carrying secret service agents to guard President Nixon crashed into the Atlantic off Grand bay, Bahamas where he is holidaying.

4.2.3. active voice

Generally speaking,journalists are expected to be as direct and as concise as possible in news writing. Sentences written in active voice are generally more suitable than sentences written in passive voice as sentences with active voice are shorter and more emphatic.Likewise, reports written in active voice seem more definite and persuasive than reports written in passive voice.As a result,reporters prefer to write news in active

12

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion voice, which is usually reflected in the use of first person. Of course, it does not mean that passive voice should not be used completely.

4.2.4. Extensive use of quotations

In order to make reports to have maximum objectiveness, reporters would use extensive direct quotations and indirect quotations so that the reader is convinced that journalists do not join their personal point of view. For example:

“Arafat made a mistake when he failed to distinguish between September 10 and September 12, 2001”said Major General Amos Gilad, the Israeli army commander on the West Bank.[12]

4.2.5 Use of Subordinate Clauses

Subordinate Clauses are widely used in Newspapers. Because subordinate clauses have compact structures, and each part of subordinate clauses formed can illustrate each other and become a complementary organic, subordinate clauses can express more definite meanings than complex sentences. This gives the whole sentence objectivity and improves the reliability of the information to some degree. For instance:

Little was said about the looting that characterized his years in power or the state - sponsored tribal violence that cost 3, 000 lives before Kenya’s two previous elections.[12]

4.3 The textual features

4.3.1 Inverted Pyramid Structure

The inverted pyramid structure is a traditional method of writing news stories in which the main facts of the story are presented first, with the rest or supplemental facts laid in place in descending order of their importance.This particular development style of the program is determined by the business characteristics of news; according to arrangement layout personnel can shorten the length at any time. For example:

MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 26 (VPI) – President Ferdinand Marcos on Tuesday ordered emergency relief measures for 17 provinces where 408 lay dead in the devastation of typhoon Irma.

(This is the Lead: Major Events in the news --- who, what, where, and how.)

The 64 - year - old Marcos ordered police to arrest hoarders and profiteers who sell foodstuffs, construction materials, and other essential materials above decreed prices and said violators should be severely punished.

(This is the second paragraph: the interpretation of the main events.)

13

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

Irma struck the rice and coconut producing regions on the main Philippine island of Luzon with powerful peak winds of 240 k\ph, in the strongest storm since typhoon coming, which killed 575 people in 1970.

(Third paragraph of the news : explaining what, how and the consequences.)

Irma destroyed houses, uprooted trees and crops, washed away roads and bridges, knocked down power and communication lines, and triggered massive flooding.

(The fourth paragraph: further elaboration for what, how and consequences.)

The typhoon also whipped up a 50 - foot high tidal wave as it smacked the Philippines on November 24. The wall of water crashed down on scores of villages in Cambrians Sur Province 240 (Kilometers) southeast of Manila.

(The fifth paragraph: overview of secondary events — when, where and what before the main event happen.)

The Ministry of Social Services said Tuesday the tidal wave itself killed 187 people; the total death count in the storm has risen to 408, the tidal wave victims included.

(Sixth paragraph of this section: who)

This news has 6 sections. The first paragraph is the lead. The part from the lead to the fourth paragraph describes the main events; the fifth and sixth paragraph discuss another secondary event taking place before the main event. Each event includes the above six elements "5 W and an H". If the space is not enough, editor can delete the fifth and sixth paragraph.

5. Conclusion

This paper discusses the linguistic features of English news reports with the hope to provide English learners with accurate ways to read English news and to identify some of the basic requirements in writing news.

It is important that some general understanding be established as to what is delivered by news. There is no single all-inclusive definition of news. The typical structure of news English is shown in three figures. We live in an age of information,a time when new things have taken place around us with a more rapid speed than ever before.Newspaper has become a rich box of new words. English news is characterized by its unique use of vocabulary and grammar.No wonder there is a overwhelming viewpoint that reading English news is an effective way to acquire modem English.

14

南昌大学继续教育学院 Chapter Five Conclusion

The research of this paper is focused mainly on the 1anguage features of English news;however, language is changing with the development of society, and so is the language of English news. Not every respect of language can be covered in this paper. As there are various types of English news, such as academic articles, stories for entertainment, advertisements,weather forecasts, editorials and so on, all of them can not be discussed in one paper.Therefore,much work should be carried out to study the features of each concrete classification.
