《傲慢与偏见》英文读后感

The impression of Pride and Prejudice

The book《 Pride and Prejudice》 is written by Jane Austen , a famous English writer .

I still remember the first sentence in this

book .It reads :"It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife ." The undertone is very clear : the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession. Love seems to be a perpetual theme all the time .And the main story in the book Pride and Prejudice is not a exception .The writer tells us her views and attitudes about love and marriage in this book.

The novel mainly tells us a love story between Elizabath and Mr. Darcy. It is at a ball that Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy for the first time and his pride and supercilious behaviors has left Elizabeth a terrible impression . This is the reason why Elizabeth's prejudice towards him begins .Besides this

reason ,there are two other incidents strengthens Elizabeth's prejudice .The first is that Wickham

speaks ill of Mr. Darcy, which makes Elizabeth thinks him is unworthy to making acquaince of.The second is that Elizabeth regards Darcy is the person who

separates her sister Jane and Mr. Bingley. But with the plots developing ,Darcy has changed himself and become no longer pride ,he also helps Jane and Bingley's reunion .All these factor change

Elizabeth's attitude towards Darcy. Eventually , Elizabeth and Darcy become a couple and lead a happy life from then on.

After reading this novel, I realize the

author—Jane Austen’s attitudes and views towards love and marriage: is unpractical to get married just for property, wealth and social status while would it be without caring about these elements. Marriage should be based on a real love and it is not a game! You can not just enjoy it without prudent

considerations. There is a gap which is called pride and prejudice between Elizabeth and Darcy , for they possess different society status and amount of property. But the ending which the author arranges that Elizabeth and Darcy break all the obstacles and

become a love couple suggests that true do exist no matter how different the background ,the status is .And I think this book will arouse people’s awareness of the importance of true love in a marriage.

The Factors of an Ideal

Marriage

I’ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen this semester. Pride and Prejudice has been valued as most successful and popular masterpiece among all the novels written by Jane Austen .

The book is the most representative work on the theme of love and marriage, which depicts the marriage and love and shows the author’s rational viewpoints that the ideal marriage should combine material and spirit together.

The brief introduction of the story :

The main plot of the novel is driven by the law of the time .After the death of Mr. Bennet , their house would be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met .Mrs. Bennet and her five daughters will be without home or income, as the laws prohibit the women from inheriting Longbourn . Mrs. Bennet worried about this predicament, and wished to find husbands for her daughters quickly.

At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who’s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley’s friend Darcy also came to the ball .Mr. Darcy ,a rich and haughty aristocratic landowner., differ from Mr. Bingley; although he was very handsome and was admired at first, his manners disgusted everyone. Because he said something offended Elizabeth, so the girl thought the man was very arrogant. Their first impression to each other was very bad. They

did not like each other at all. Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth because of her lovely behavior and intelligence, while Elizabeth was disgusted by his pride and had a prejudice about him.

Later Bennens met a lovely young man who name Wickham . And with Wickham’s rumors ,Elizabeth judge Darcy was a hatest man and began to have prejudice on him, and kept misunderstanding him.

Meantime , Elizabeth ’s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property , he wanted to marry with Elizabeth but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Elizabeth’s friend.

Next ,when Darcy confessed his love for Elizabeth, he was rejected impolitely. Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Elizabeth in order to remove her misunderstandings of him. And Elizabeth finally found that with the help of Darcy , her youngest sister, Lydia, married Wickham .

Gradually Elizabath’s prejudice of Mr. Darcy diappeared. Finally they composed a wonderful family after passed various troubles. And so it is to Jane and Bingley .

There are four couples in the end . And Different

opinions on love and marriage are expressed by four marriages:Jane and Bingley , Elizabeth and Darcy ,Charlotte and Collins, Lydia and Wickham.

In my opinion ,the factors of an ideal marriage are consisted of four essentials .

First of all, the firm foundation of marriage is love. Marriage should be based on love, otherwise it is just a shell, not having any happiness. The marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth reveals that marriage should be based on real love .

On the contrary ,Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins, their marriage totally depended on the position, money, and the background, not the love.

Yes , they do had a luxury life, but there’s no real love between them and this kind of marriage is surely a tragedy . While in my eye, it is really unfortunate to rest hope on the material comforts for the rest life.

Moreover,an ideal marriage should be based on understanding .. The relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy reveals the importance of getting to know one’s partner before marrying. Only Elizabeth got rid of prejudice and Mr.Darcy changed his attitude did they had a happy ending .it improves that Love can be captured only by getting rid of pride and prejudice and to know each other .

. The third factor of an ideal marriage is heroine’s character .

The heroine ,Elizabeth ,was a clever and smart girl, although she was not the most beautiful one. She was also an independent girl and always had an individual opinion, because Elizabeth was an educated girl, although she learned by herself. So education is very important to women. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic

which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life.

It tells us that we must adhere to our principle. Even in the face of great pressure we cannot retreat. Be brave to pursue your love.

However ,we cannot treat love carelessly .

Love is a really beautiful thing, but it shouldn’t be treated indiscreetly. We should think over carefully before deciding our happiness of a lifetime Love is a really beautiful thing, but it shouldn’t be treated indiscreetly. We should think over carefully before deciding our happiness of a lifetime

Take Lydia and Wickham for an example .

When Lydia elopes with Wickham and he is paid to marry her, she shows no remorse for the embarrassment that her actions caused for her family, but acts as if she has made a wonderful match of which her sisters should be jealous.

It is very silly of her conduction .we must be very serious about this matter .

The fourth factor is a certain amount of money .

‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. ’ it is the first sentence of the book . It implies love is the only basis of marriage but it’s stupid to ignore the role of money in the marriage. So a certain amount of money can guarantee the happiness of the marriage .

When I finished reading this book , I realized that we can not just because of profit to sacrifice our happiness and give in to

the orthodox rules . We must pursuit our e love ;we must be independent and intelligent enough to receive the true love .
