The Woman in White

The Woman in White was written by Wilkie Collins,a English famous mysterious and emotional novelist in 19th century.

Laura,a beautiful and kind-hearted heir of large estates, was in order to follow her father’s last words and married with Sir Percival who was a crual and evil person.Because casted greedy eyes on Laura’s treasure,Sir Percival colluded with Laura’ uncle. With the help of young painting teater Walter and Marian, the thuggery case was bottomed.

The story puted the heroine Laura’s unfortunately marriage and the love between her and paintiing teacher Walter as the main lines. It is a story of greed and evil, innocence and betrayed, confused identites and cruel deception. Finally, because

suspence of the and love, all vivid conspiracies disappeared.Through the ingenious plot struction, elaborate

characterization, the story reveals the Britain corrupt legal systerm and the hypocrisy and cruel upper class of bourgeoisie.

Marian who with the ugly appearance is very

warm-hearted and very beauty inside that does her best to help Laura. She is brave, brilliant and independent.Though it maybe happens something terrible, she was not affraid of that and finally had found the truth of the murder together with Wolter. So I think judging a person should not only depends on the appearance. The moral cultivation is more important than the power, the money, the status…We should improve our inner beauty, and then people will respect you more.

The book is divided into three parts-the narrative of Walter Hartright, of Clement ’s,

teacher of drawing, the story continued by Marian Halcombe in Blackwater Park, Hampshire, the story continued by Walter Hartright.

With the help of his friend Pesca, Walter Hartright once got a job as a teacher of drawing in Cuberland, in Limmeridge village. Walter met his student Laura Fairlie, and Marian Halcombe who was Laura’s half-sister and companion, and soon Walter and Laura fell in love with each other but never mentioned it because at that time, Laura had been in an engagement with a Baronet, Sir Percival Glyde. Several days before Laura’s marriage, she received an anonymous letter that frightened her very much. However, Laura finally married Sir Percival owing to his temporary good manners and Mr. Farilie’ s hating feminism in his place, and Walter left Laura and then headed for some other places to earn his living. After the new couple’s honeymoon, Marian still lived with Laura and found that there was

something strange with the purpose of Sir Prcival’ s marrying Laura because of his different attitude towards her and an incident of asking Laura to sign on a paper without giving her time to read it. Therefore, Marian and Walter began to find out Sir Percival’s secret. Due to the fortune of legacy the Counts and Sir Percival, they made the plan to change the place of Laura and Anne Catherick and then made use of Anne’s heart disease to get the legacy, so Walter had to get enough evidence to uncover this all and brought Laura back to her proper place in the world. During Walter’s effort to get evidence, Sir Percival died in the fire set by himself. Finally, Laura and Walter became a couple and she returned to her normal life, having a child with her husband, leading a happy life.

After reading it, first of all, I must admit that my vocabulary is really limited and I must make more effort to enlarge it, because I came across plenty of words that I did not know. And, I think the story is not a funny one. It uses so many details to describe the course when

Walter and Marian doubted Sir Percival and when they made effort to get evidence. The details ushered me to think more about what would happen next. It needs thinking, and that’s why it is a detective novel. And I don’t understand why the Count beg Walter to take good care of Marian Halcombe. I guess that the Count might fall in love with Marian, or he had some unknown relationship with Marian who didn’t know, or some other reasons. I can’t tell whether it is good, because it may be one idea of the author’s, and it really leaves me

thinking about it. The novel ends up with the Hartrights happy life. It ends up with happiness, just like the ordinary fairytale, leaving us hope.

I chose the book just because I am attracted by the name of it, and I didn't know it’s a detective novel. If I know about that, I would never choose it. Girls prefer romantic story, especially me, but I will say that detective is not that bad after this try. The book is vivid enough and it uses so many ways to describe something shocked somebody, so I learnt a lot from it. One problem is that I choose American English instead of British English, which means that I have to take time to distinguish the use of the phrases.

To conclude, it’s worth reading!
