Reading this novel, I feel deeply horrible. Personally, it is disastrous to live with this kind of man who is an alcoholic and is easy to lose his temper, especially when he is drunk. I am gloomy with the man’s behavior and have pity on the black cat and the man’s wife.
When I read The Black Cat, I saw a psycho, a murderer who cruelly killed a black cat loved by his wife, then brutishly murdered his wife instead of his second cat, and hid her carcass in the wall. I was confused with the behavior of the man who did all that damn things and wondering that what a terrible thing drove the man to lose his mind to do these. So I read again and again so as to find out the reason and figure out the answer.
In this short novel, all things happened strangely and weirdly. The man, the main character in this narrative, was very kind and obedient and loved pets very much in his younger age, but when he grew up and married his temper became badly and he was easy to lose temper and beat his wife and pets. One night, unexpectedly, under the influence of alcohol the man, like an evil advocator, violently grasped the poor beast by the throat and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket with a pen-knife. One morning, in cool blood, he slipped a noose about the black cat’s neck and hung it to the limb of a tree with the tears streaming from his eyes. One night, when the man did this cruel deed, he was aroused from sleep by the cry of fire and his whole property was swallowed up by the conflagration. One night, the man brought a black cat with a large, indefinite patch of white in its breast who endeared itself to his wife. One day, on the steep stairs, the man uplifted an axe in order to kill the cat. Instead, he assassinated his wife in his wrath. One day, in the damp and black cellar, where the man buried his wife’s carcass in the wall, a wailing shriek consigned the man to the prison and the man received the deserved retribution. All these plots are connected with the one-the black cat. In another words, the black cat is the clue of this narrative and represents a lot ofthings.
In my opinion, all things happening have their reasons, so this novel does. When thinking about the man’s behavior, I consider the man as a person who was influenced by various things from inside and outside. On the inside, plenty of negative emotions such as jealousy, violence, irritation make the man be jealous to the black cat who was loved by his wife and be violent and irritable to the cat in that the cat was so close to the man that the man felt troublesome. On the outside, the man was always haunting in the bar and was alcoholic, which shows that his life is aimless and disordered. Both inside reasons and outside reasons lead the man to the depth of sin. And the black cat is a victim andwitness. In addition, the black cat’s singular-eye like a beacon light that makes all evils exposed. So justiceexists and has long arms.
The story conveys a view that everyone should confine their own behavior with moral and teaching, trying not to make mistakes.If he does something wrong, God will get him paid for it.God is everything and no one can escape. Truth will come back in the end.
Review of The Red and The Black
Le rouge et le noir, in English we called The Red and The Black was written by a famous French writer--Marie Henri Beyle(1783-1842), we also called him Stendhal. Stendhal was born in the age of The Great French Revolution. The advanced bourgeois, especially Napoleon, has a big effect on him. Inspired by stories of Napoleon told by a retired army surgeon and taught Latin by a local curate, sawyer's son Julian Sorel enjoys a meteoric rise and an even more rapid fall. His career provides a base from which Stendhal satirizes French society, from small town bourgeoisie to clerics and feckless aristocrats, and probes the psychology of love and honor(1).He wrote a lot of famous book, such as Proenades dans Rome. He is the beginner of the Critical Realism which was thought highly by Gorky. Tolstoy regarded him as one of three best writers in France (the others are Balzac and Flaubert).
Stendhal wrote this book while the capitalists were being persecuted by the emperor and the church. He could “get nothing but feel shamed”. So he gave out his voice and passion by writing this great book praised by humans around the world, including Hemingway, Maugham and even Chairman Mao(1).
The hero in this novel called Julian, as the leading character ,Julian is a weak，capable,
ambitious young man.(2) He wanted to be successful. So he tried all the measures to get higher position, even some extreme ones like making use of the love of the heroines. But at last he was sentenced to death by accident. Definitely, he ends up with a tragedy, intimately bound up with ancient Greek spirit of tragedy (2). Julian is sensitive, emotional individuals who are in conflict with the society in which they live(3). He is so cruel, has such a desire to be famous, to be outstanding, to be successful, sometimes a little abnormal. Let’s throw light upon this famous novel. Julian
