Gone with the Wind Book Review

This week I read the book called Gone with the Wind which is written by the American female writer Margaret Mitchell. It is said that she spent 10 years to finish this book. This is a perfect work. The plot is full of twists and turns, and the characters are vivid. I very love this book and the heroine of this book.

Scarlett O’Hara, a pretty Southern beauty, lived on Tara, a large plantation in Georgia. Before the war, she was very glamorous and full of passion that only belonged to the young. All gentle men were attracted by her charm. But she was so pride that she felt no one but Ashley Wilkes. In that time, she just liked a wild princess. And she did what she wanted to do and tried to get what she wanted. She was so brave and upright to her heart. To be honest, I admit that Scarlett was so sly in some aspects. But that was the most important thing that helped her survived in that world. What’s more, nobility also had another ugly faces. But they never showed them and always went with the stream. Compared with Scarlett who constantly broke the traditional thinking, they were more hypocritical and harehearted, weren’t they? During the Civil War, Scarlett left her hometown to Atlantic alone. Obviously her main purpose was to meet Ashley who had gone to the war. She loved him all the time although he had married another woman. From there, we also can see Scarlett’s nerve and her persistence to seek true love. In Atlantic, she promised Ashley to stay here to take care of his pregnant wife Melanie Hamilton. Some times Scarlett just liked a demon, because she might try to achieve her goals at any costs or by all means. (I say this not because I dislike her but just say the truth.) To be honest, Scarlett could have left Melanie who had taken away her beloved Ashley behind and ran for her life. If she had done so, she might be able to marry Ashley after Melanie’s death. However she didn’t do so. I’m thinking that maybe she loved Ashley so much that she was willing to do anything for Ashley or Melanie’ goodness made her have no heart to do so. One night the Yankees captured Atlanta and set fire to the city. While Melanie had just gave birth to a son. But they had to escape the city right now. So Scarlett turned to Rhett Butler who fell in love with Scarlett at the first sight for help. Fortunately they escaped Atlantic successfully. But the way to home was not easy. Rhett left them in the half way. Scarlett had to face all the difficulties by her own. Hunger, cold, fatigue and the threat of Yankees tortured them. However in Scarlett’s dictionary, there was no ‘give up’. Or maybe the severer the situation is, the more powerful Scarlett was. From beginning to end, Scarlett never gave up and they reached Scarlrtt’s home Tara finally.

Shouldn’t we praise Scarlett for her nerve and determination? However when she got home, she found that her mother had done, his father insane, and sisters week. In addition, Yankees had taken away all of their assets and food. The whole family was driven to the last ditch. However Scarlett never chose to give up. She just like the poison rose in the desert, which was so beautiful, but in order to survive she can be cure. She vowed ‘If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, I'll never be hungry again!’ I was deeply shocked by her determination and sprit. I also believed that she must be able to make it. In fact, she did make it. She still did what she wanted to do and tried to get what she wanted just like before. She managed to get money to keep Tara by all means and did many bad things. She almost abandoned her conscience and always wore face masks. She struggled in the world all the time just as the word that she said ‘Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death, a world in which there is no place for me.’ Frankly speaking I don’t know it was what that supported Scarlett to be so strong. Some people said it was the land of Tara. Is it real? I do not know. In the end, Scarlett got all that she waned but true love. Rhett who loved Scarlett all the time and had done many things for her left her in the final. Maybe this was the cost of her power. In any case Scarlett was a very cool and unusual girl. I like and admire her.

Another lady I want to say is Melanie Hamilton Ashley’s wife. If we regard Scarlett as a demon, then we regard Melanie as an angel. She was tolerant, kindhearted, and unsophisticated. She never saw the ugliness of life. Although being in the unsteady time, she never lost her pure heart. She was the opposite Scarlett. But she loved Scarlett and never suspected her. She always stood by Scarlett’s side, supported her and tried her best to help her. I was moved by her empressements. She was the only one who wasn’t polluted by the misery. She was so beautiful and shinny just like the hope. I was so sad that she died in the end. Before dying she just cared about her husband and Scarlett, which made my eyes full of tears. She was so great.

The last one who gave me deep impression was Rhett Butler. His love to Scarlett was so deep. He knew Scarlett never loved him, but he still gave all his love to her. Maybe he was just too stupid. Scarlett was a poison rose; everyone around her would get hurt. Rhett wasn’t an exception. When he lost everything and could not afford hurt any more, he eventually left Scarlett. It was so pathetic. Maybe Scarlett was bound to be alone for her left life.

But nothing can defeat Scarlett as her word ‘Home. I'll go home. And I'll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.’

第二篇:Gone with the Wind “飘”的全英读后感

Gone with the Wind

By Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell was born in Atlanta on 8 November 1900 and raised in a lawyer family. As she was a child, she could often hear of talks of War Between the States, and it made her have the desire to write a novel about war. That was why Gone with the Wind published after she grew up. Margaret Mitchell didn?t have many words in her life, but Gone with the Wind is everlasting in the world.

Every one in the Gone with the wind has his or her particular character. However, the first time after I had finished reading the novel, I can not totally understand the meaning to describe such a woman as the heroine. In my eyes, the other characters are better. Melanie Hamilton is a kind and great woman, Ashley is a righteous gentleman, and Rhett is an honest and unconstrained man. But Scarlet, who seemed to always care about herself, was so mean and hateful. She could marry men whom she didn?t love to, she could take her sister?s lover away and she even didn?t show too much sorrow when her two husbands died.

But the second reading gave me another feeling; I finally understand a great word is not a fairy tale, which has its certain good or bad characters. A coin has two sides; Scarlet in the Gone with the wind is just a character to show us readers something. So, what is something? First, there is a clue------Tara. From the beginning to the end, many plots were happen though it.

At the beginning of this novel, Scarlet knew the news Ashley was going to marry Melly, she asked her father to prove it and know the news was truth, there was dialogue between she and her dad: Pa,” I want my girl to be happy and you wouldn?t be happy with him(Ashley).” Scarlet:” Oh, I would! I would!” Pa:” That you would not, daughter……Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything……for ?tis the only things in this world that lasts, and don?t you be forgetting it! ?Tis the only thing worth working for, worth fighting for, worth dying for……” This is the first time to mention the signification of the existence of Tara. And at that time, Scarlet just laughed her father like a Irishman and what she cared was just Ashley, he was her dream!

Then was the marriage to Charles, the war, and her first husband?s dead. During the war, she lost almost everything, she went through the starvation, the panic, the dead around her and what she wanted was staying at home------Tara. Though everything was lost, she could live and take care of other folks like a parent. Then, she met Ashley again in Tara, Scarlet begged him to take her away, she said there?s nothing left for her, nothing to fight for and live for. Thus, Ashley told her there?s something, something she love better than him though she may not know it. Then he took up a handful of sand to Scarlet, she began to be calm and agreed she still had Tara. This is the second

time to describe Tara, and at that time, because of having suffered a lot, she became much matured and loved money.

The third time mention Tara was after Rhett?s left. Scarlet finally understood she just loved something not existed-----Ashley?s perfect image from her imagination. Actually, she didn?t know it before. Just like her nightmare in the honeymoon with Rhett, she said she was too tired and she couldn?t find “it”, she ran through the mist and she couldn?t find “it”. When Rhett asked what is “it”? She didn?t know, she just knew “it” was hidden in the mist. There was a connection in her way home after Scarlet found out her heart eventually, all the way was full of the mist, though she final knew “it” is her love to Rhett, she couldn?t catch it like her dream.

So, in the end of the novel, she was alone, the only thing lasted was Tara, which she loved to go when she was suffering anything. Something maybe is the capitalist fate or the maid?s heart in love, it gave her the courage to live and became brave.

There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes, by reading this novel; the readers could certainly feel its great fascination.
