Pride and Prejudice is a well-known British writer Jane Austen’s representative, described the Pride Darcy and Prejudice Miss Elizabeth, the wealthy, the wealthy singleman Bingley and the eldest among the five sister Jane’s despute love story. The novel opens with the famous line, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.". and ends with two marriages: Jane and Bingley's, as well as Darcy and Elizabeth's. Both couples are assumed to live happily ever after.

Between A Fairytale and the Reality

Book Report on Pride and Prejudice

If the story of Pride and Prejudice was wrote today, it may not even get published. People nowadays are more likely to read things that are exciting or useful, and ignoring what a story is really about, let alone a story including a love fairytale.

The story of Lizzy and Darcy was an old one. It lasted over a century however fascinated people all over the world. The reason why people love the story is that, according to my understanding, it reflects the reality world faithfully meanwhile provide us with hope and romance that we need. We adore a girl like Lizzy, who has the courage to persist in her belief and walks through difficulties with her pure soul. And maybe all the young ladies are also in want of a husband like Darcy, who is sensible, responsible and, perhaps, with fortune. We had frustrations in love and relationships, and the book provide us a vision of an almost perfect love, comforting our fragmented hearts.

At the beginning of the story, Mr. Darcy seemed not to be a very agreeable young man despite of his fortune. He was proud at the ball, unwilling to dance with the ladies and described Lizzy as “perfectly tolerable”, which was unfortunately overheard by Lizzy. His indifferent helped him standing out in the dancing crowd with cold civility, though that may actually was just out of his shyness. While Lizzy, at that time, was living under the auras of Jane, who was considered to be the most beautiful one of all the Bennet girls. Nevertheless she was the only one of the girls who was intelligent and wise enough to know what she really needed. She did not respect Darcy more than the others because his status, and misunderstood him as a man arrogant and annoying. As the story goes, their misunderstandings grew deeper. If it were not for the fact that both of them are the most important character of the book, it is hard to guess that they finally become man and wife. During the process, Lizzy had formed a kind of prejudice to Darcy. She was blinded by her affections to Wickham and her previous judgments towards Darcy. She declined the propose raised by Mr. Cullens regardless of the expectation of her mother for her dislike to him, and also, for wanting true love in marriage. When finally find out that Wickham had run away with

her little sister Lydia and realized it was Darcy who lent her family the helping hand, she understood that she was actually the one who was being prejudice. And for Darcy, it was also not easy to overcome the gap of status. At the end of the story, the couple happily married.

Although I do admire the love between Lizzy and Darcy, which was innocent and out of true feelings, I also noticed that for most of the people, love was too luxury a thing to possess. Some people do not understand what true love is really about, like Lydia. What she thought was love was pretty dresses, endless social events and a handsome husband. She eloped with Wickham and left her family behind for the shallow desire. Their marriage gloomed quickly without love and burdened all their lives. Another typical example of loveless marriage is Miss. Lucus and Mr. Cullens. Miss Lucus only married Cullens for the reason that she was getting old and marrying Cullens might be her last chance. She was considered a burden to her family, a laughing stock, and an old maid in the eyes of people. Despite that Lizzy thought her choice was nothing like a mature and wise woman would make, I perfectly understand Lucus. We do not have the right to judge the others, for each one of us has got our own dilemma to struggle in. Lizzy chose to wait for real love to come, but what if that there were no Darcy for her? Growing old single is definitely not a good choice. Faced with the reality, we sometimes have no choice but to do what we are expected. Not every girl can find her own Mr. Darcy and fall in love through thick and thin. Therefore compared to Lucus, Lizzy was just so much luckier.

The story of pride and prejudice is touching, which is for sure, while the story of compromise and tolerant should also be respect. It is not a way of being cowardice, but a way of being realistic. The book, in my opinion, is right between a fairytale and the reality. It shows you what real love is and what we ought to insist without leaving unlucky people who can not live up to the fairytale behind. We may fancy about the love we will have in a romantic way, but we can never get away from the reality. Maybe one day, we will make our own choice to be another Mrs. Cullens.
