Master of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing [MSc(ECom & IComp)]

Course Aims:

The Master of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing programme is the first programme in Hong Kong to bridge business and technology. It is designed for business executives, policy and decision makers, managers, and information technology professionals to equip them with the latest knowledge and skills about technology development and business opportunities in e-commerce on the Internet.

Mode of Enrolment

Students are required to successfully complete 12 modules to graduate. The mode of study may comprise 8 modules plus a project (equivalent to 4 modules). Alternatively, students may select to study 12 modules.

The programme tries to provide an integration of technology with businesses, and consists of modules (courses) falling into two major and related disciplines: electronic commerce modules and Internet computing modules. Students are encouraged to take modules in both disciplines, provided they have the necessary pre-requisite knowledge for the particular module. Extensive counselling will be provided to assist students to choose their modules.

Modules are further divided into core and elective. Students are required to select at least 4 modules from the list of core modules (can be any mixture of electronic commerce or Internet computing discipline). The remaining modules can be selected from either core or elective modules. The following modules (listed in order of course

Programme Aims

This is an advanced programme that aims to provide an in-depth understanding of business models, information systems, management and technologies in e-commerce and Internet computing. Targeted at graduates with management experience, the programme provides the knowledge to plan, develop, deploy and manage e-commerce systems. It also covers the appraisal of different e-commerce models, systems and tools, and the potential and limitations of e-commerce.

? This programme is offered within the Postgraduate Scheme in Computing. Students have freedom to change their specialty and ultimate award. Flexible modes of study, i.e. both classroom and on-line modes (CyberU), are available.

Students who are registered in the regular mode programmes can register for CyberU subjects and vice versa.

? Up to 15 credits can be transferred so that students can graduate earlier if they have sufficient background in related fields. All first-year students are eligible to apply for an Alan Turing Entrance Scholarship valued from HK$5,000 to HK$20,000. PolyU alumni can apply for the COMP Alumni Scholarship to the value of 15% of the tuition fee of subjects taken in the first year of study. Some subjects are included on the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) list of reimbursable

courses. Students can determine their own pace of study for each semester according to personal preferences.

*Non-local students subject to visa requirements must take on a full-time study load (i.e. at least 9 credits for each semester).

Professional Recognition

Graduates can apply for:

? The Certified E-Commerce Consultant (CEC) professional qualification of the American E-Commerce Association; and The Senior Certified Commercial E-Business Specialist (Senior CCEBS) qualification of the

Occupational Skill Testing and Instruction Centre, China General Chamber of Commerce, with waival of all examination requirements.

? Programme Structure Students can select from a wide range of subjects that are offered under the Postgraduate

Scheme in Computing. In general, each subject takes place once a week in the evening over a 14-week semester. Full-time students normally take 5 subjects in a semester, whereas part-time students usually take 2 subjects.

? The programme requires the completion of 30 credits. Students can choose from the following study patterns: (A) Study 10 subjects (with at least 6 Core Subjects);

(B) Study 7 subjects (with at least 5 Core Subjects) and complete a Dissertation; or

(C) Study 8 subjects (with at least 6 Core Subjects) and undertake a Project.
