感恩节的故事(The Thanksgiving Story)

你知道感恩节是哪一天吗?你知道感恩节的由来吗?请阅读下面的文章理解感恩节的故事。 Thanksgiving Day in America is a time to offer thanks, of family gatherings and holiday meals. A time of turkeys, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. A time for Indian corn, holiday parades and giant balloons.

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November .The Pilgrims(朝圣者) who sailed to this country aboard the Mayflower were originally members of the English Separatist Church (英国分离者地下教会清教徒)(a Puritan(清教徒) sect). They had earlier fled their home in England and sailed to Holland (The Netherlands) to escape religious persecution. There, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventually became with the Dutch way of life, finance a pilgrimage(朝圣之行) to America. Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflower were non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the company's interests. Only about one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast -- including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving" observance(仪式). It lasted three days.

Another at almost every Thanksgiving table is pumpkin pie. But it is unlikely that the first feast included that treat. The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread or pastries of any kind. However, they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced a type of fried bread from their corn crop. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes, or butter. There was no cattle for dairy products, and the newly-discovered potato was still considered by many Europeans to be poisonous. But the feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, and plums.

This "thanksgiving" feast was not repeated the following year. But in 1623, during a severe the very next day, Governor Bradford proclaimed another day of Thanksgiving, again inviting their Indian friends. It wasn't until June of 1676 that another Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed.

The Maya(玛雅人) was a clever and culturally rich people. They had farms, beautiful palaces and cities with many buildings. The Mayan people knew a lot about nature and the world around them. The knowledge helped them to live a better life than most other people of that time, because they could use it to make their lives more comfortable(舒适的). Knowledge about tools and farming, for example, made their work easier and land more productive(多产的).

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in US.

For some parents the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as hazards and, with good guides, some education and a few precautions(预防措施),the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated(航空).“Kids have to be on-line .If we tell our kids they can’t have access(进入)to the Internet we’re cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.

Most kids have started to learn to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing(浏览)the Internet.

A few other tips :

—Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.

—Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on-line.

—Tell your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially details like address and phone number.

—And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.
