About the year 1900, a small, dark-haired hot boy named Charlie Chaplin was often seen waiting outside the back entrance of London theatres. He looked thin and hungry. But twenty years later this name Chaplin became the greatest, best-known, and best-loved comedian(喜剧演员)in the world. Any visitor to the cinema must have seen some of Chaplin’s filmstrips. People everywhere have sat and laughed at them until the tears ran down their faces. Even people who don’t understand English can enjoy Chaplin’s films though most of them are silent. It isn’t what he says that makes us laugh. His comedy doesn’t depend upon words and languages. It depends upon little actions which mean the same thing to people all over the world. “If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives — the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do — as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read — sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. The name of the hurricanes(飓风) is chosen from a list of names in alphabetical order(依字母顺序的). Female and male names are chosen alternatively. For example, the first hurricane of the year will be called “Alexandra”, the second “Bernard”, the third “Catherine”, etc.

When newspapers and radio describe the damage caused by a hurricane named Hazel, girls named Hazel are probably teased(取笑)by their friends. To keep out of trouble, the Weather Bureau says, “Any between hurricane names and the names of particular girls is purely accidental(偶然的)”.

Some women became angry because hurricanes are given their names, but many other women are proud to see their names make headlines. They don’t even care that they are the names of destructive storms. Because more women seem to listen to like it than dislike it, the Weather Bureau has decided to continue using girl’s names for hurricanes.

In some ways a hurricane is like a person. After it is born, it grows and develops, then becomes old and dies. Each hurricane has a character of it own. Each follows its own path through the world, and people remember it long after it has gone. So it is natural to give hurricanes names, and to talk about them as if they were alive.

66. The underlined word “resemblance” probably means ________.

C. Many women want to be known.

D. All the hurricanes are caused by women.

Men sometimes say: “We are better and cleverer than women. Women never invented things. We do.” It is true that men have invented a lot of useful things: the alphabet, machines, rockets, and guns, too. But scientists and archeologists now agree that women invented one very important thing. It had changed the history. They invented agriculture.

Before the invention of agriculture men were hunter. They went out every day. Sometimes they killed animals-sometimes animals killed them. Life was difficult and dangerous. Women had to go out every day, too. They collected roots, fruit and grass. Then, one day, more than 10,000years ago a woman dropped some grass seeds. She dropped them near her home in the Middle East. They grew—and the first wheat was born. The idea grew, too. Women planted roots and fruit trees. Then they could stay at home and look after the children and the animals. Women liked baby animals: dogs, cows, sheep and goats. That idea grew, too. Then their husbands did not have to go hunting for meat. They stayed at home. They built villages and cities. Men began civilization---after women invented agriculture.

71. Sometimes men think that ______.

A. they have rights as equal as women

B. women have changed the history

C. they have more abilities than history

D. women are not so bright as they are

72. Before agriculture was invented, life was difficult and dangerous because ______.

A. sometimes animals killed men

B. women had to go hunting with their husbands

C. men had to fight against animals

D. They stayed at home and looked after their children and animals.
