The important sentences in Forrest Gump

Step 2: introduction of Shawshank Redemption

It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Morgan Freeman), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography(最佳摄影), Best Editing, Best Original Score(最佳原创音乐), and Best Sound - but it failed to win a single Oscar. And the film's director failed to receive a nomination for himself! In the same year, Forrest Gump received all of the attention. Only through positive word-of-mouth (following cable TV and then video releases) did the film do well.

Ⅰ. Characters

Andy Dufrasne:

Andy Dufrasne played by Tim Robbins.A New England banker accused of murdering his wife and her lover. Claims he is innocent, but everyone is innocent in Shawshank. Likes to collect rocks, read, starts a library, and dreams of building a boat at the Pacific Ocean. Close friends with Red and Brooks.

Red:

“Red” played by: Morgan Freeman. Fellow inmate and prisoner in Shawshank. Imprisoned as a young man he has almost been entirely institutionalized. Very close friends with Andy and dreams of being free someday.

Warden Norton:

Warden Norton played by: Bob Guntan. The warden is a very religious man who on the side is hiding money in false bank accounts and using Andy so his crime can’t be traced to him.He enjoys torturing his prisoners such as throwing them in the “hole”. He is very powerful and has immense influence on the prison.

Brooks Hatlen:

Brooks Hatlen played by James Whitmore. The prison librarian, Brooks has been in Shawshanks for almost all of his life. He is known for his caring personality( takes care of a baby crow Jake), but eventually is released. He gives in to institutionalization and commits suicide because he can’t live in the real world.

Tommy Williams:

Tommy Williams played by: Gil Bellows. A young man in and out of prison his whole life, Tommy came to Shawshank for robbery. He Has a wife and child at home, so he asks Andy for help in learning how to read and write so he can get a high school diploma. He was in prison with the man who killed Andy’s wife and her lover.

Ⅱ.theme

Institutionalization is a major theme in Shawshank Redemption. Many prisoners have been in the prison for so long that they have been institutionalized, which means the only life that they know is the one within the prison walls. Ex: Brooks lived most of his life in the prison, so when

released he does not know how to live in the outside world. Things have changed so much while he was in prison and he even thinks of crimes he could commit in order to be thrown back into prison. He eventually commits suicide because he cannot handle life in the real world. Ⅲ.symbol

The music symbolizes hope and especially Andy's hope that he will someday be free and living on his own again. The music can be in his heart and mind and the warden cannot take that away from him.

The harmonica is a symbol of harmony and it shows the harmonic relationship between Andy and Red because Andy gives it to Red. It also symbolizes hope.

Ⅳ. Background Information

Shawshank was the quietest film to be nominated for seven academy awards. It did not win any. In 1995, a year after it came out in the theaters, Shawshank became the top video rental of the year. Based on the book Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by: Stephen King

The original Red was a white, Irish man with red hair, but Morgan Freeman was chosen because his personality matched perfectly. Shawshank Redemption shows that with hope and persistence, everyone can find their own place in the sun.“Get busy living or get busy dying”- it’s important to have hope and to live for something or else it isn’t worth living.

Step 3: practice. Watch the section of the film and fill in the blanks.

Practice (1):

We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like ________. We could have been tarring(铺沥青) the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy,---he spent that break hunkered(盘坐) in the shade---a strange little ____on his face--- watching us ____________.

Practice (2):

Red: Brooks ain’t no bug. He’s just _____________.

Heywood: Institutionalized? My ass. The man’s been here 50 years, Heywood, 50 years. This is all he knows. In here, he’s an important man--- an _______ man. Outside, he’s nothing. Just a used- up con with arthritis(关节炎) in both hands. Probably couldn’t’t get a library card if he tried. You know what I’m trying to say?

Red, I do believe you are talking out of you ass(胡说).

Red: You believe whatever you want. But I tell you these walls are funny. First, you ______ them. Then you ___________ them. Enough time passes---you get so you___________ them. That’s “Institutionalized”.

Shit.

I could never get like that.

Oh, yeah? Wait till you have been here as long as Brooks.

Red: Goddamn right. They __________________--- that’s exactly what they take.

Practice (3):

Andy: It was in here. In here. That’s the_______________. They can’t get that from you. Haven’t you ever felt that way about music?

Red: Well, I played a mean harmonica (口琴) as a younger man. Lost interest in it, though. Didn’t _____________in here.

Andy: Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don’t forget.

Red: Forget?

Andy: Forget that there are ---places--- in the world that aren’t made out of stone. There’s something --- inside--- that they can’t get to --- that_____________. That’s yours.

Adapt from a true biography

Executive producer Make Kalama saw the story of Chris Gander on the television programs. Chris Gander, the homeless man, for his son and his own beliefs, did all the things he can. From the bottom of life stepped towards success and eventually became a famous investment expert. His story moved Make Kalama at once. Kalama immediately telephoned Gander, asked for right to adapt the story. Although Smith is very busy, after he saw the script, Smith agreed to act immediately. Gander became the film consultant; his autobiography at the beginning of this year and became bester seller.

Ⅰ.Meaning of the title

Question: Why is the film named “happyness” instead of “happiness”?

不知道你有没有注意到电影的名字是happyness而不是happiness。happyness是个拼写错误。当Chris看到墙上的涂鸦中happiness这个词被拼错了还较真地对人说:There is no y in happiness, there is an i。

仔细想一想,可以说这句话是整部电影的theme。你可以理解为There is no “why" in happiness, there is an “I”。你不用问为什么人人都看似如此幸福,而我却不幸福;如果你努力去追求你的幸福,你也会有你的幸福。人们最通常的抱怨就是“WHY” 而大部分问题的根本在于“I”

Ⅱ. Good lines

Good lines (1): Interview

Christ: I've been sitting there for the last half-hour, trying to come up with a story that would explain my being here dressed like this. And I wanted to come up with a story that would demonstrate qualities that I'm sure you all admire here, like earnestness, diligence, team-playing, something. And I couldn't think of anything. So the truth is...I was arrested for failure to pay parking tickets.

Interviewer: Parking tickets?

Christ: And I ran all the way here from the Polk Station, the police station.

Interviewer: What were you doing before you were arrested?

Christ: I was painting my apartment.

Interviewer: Is it dry now?

Christ: I hope so.

Interviewer: Jay says you're pretty determined.

Jay: He's been waiting outside the front of the building with some 40-pound gizmo for over a

month.

Interviewer: He said you're smart.

Christ: Well, I like to think so.

Interviewer: And you want to learn this business?

Christ: Yes, sir, I wanna learn.

Interviewer: Have you already started learning on your own?

Christ: Absolutely.

Interviewer: Jay?

Jay: Yes, sir.

Interviewer: How many times have you seen Chris?

Jay: I don't know. One too many, apparently.

Interviewer: Was he ever dressed like this?

Jay: No. Jacket and tie.

Interviewer: First in your class in school?

Christ: High school? -Yes, sir.

Interviewer: How many in the class? –

Christ: Twelve. It was a small town. -I'll say. -But I was also first in my radar class in the Navy, and that was a class of20. Can I say something? I'm the type of person---if you ask me a question, and I don't know the answer, I'm gonna tell you that I don't know. But I bet you what. I know how to find the answer. Is that fair enough?

Interviewer: Chris. What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him? What would you say?

Christ: He must've had on some really nice pants.

Good lines (2)

Father and his son was playing basketball, father tell him

Father: Don't ever let somebody tell you: you can't do something, not even me, all right? Son: All right.

Father: You get a dream, you get to protect it. People can't do something themselves, they want to tell you: you can't do it. You want something? Go get it! Period!!

Ⅲ. Viewer’s Comments

Viewer’s Comments (1)

This movie was great! It had a good moral message to it about endurance and perseverance. Will Smith did a good job of portraying the struggles that the real life Chris Gardner went through. My husband and I found ourselves wanting to cry several times. It was a very touching story and we plan on buying it when it comes out. We totally recommend others watching the movie. The only negative things about this movie, is what is mentioned by everyone else; his girlfriend in the beginning getting ready in her bra and the f-word including a few other cuss words. But in general, all those are overlooked without compromising(违背原则) our values, because of the quality and message of the rest of the movie.

Viewer’s Comments (2)

This movie was very well made. It was a beautiful story about Chris Gardner, who is left by his wife and he insists of taking care of their five-year-old son Christopher. Chris then becomes broke(没有钱的)and has everything that you would never want to happen starts but his relationship with his son is powerful! I recommend this movie for teens(十几岁)and up.

Viewer’s Comments (3)

This movie is one of the best I have seen. My mom, sister, and brother all agree. I'm not one for tears when watching a movie, but this one I actually had a few throughout the movie. One of my favorite kinds of movies are ones based on true stories, which made me want to see this movie more. And I wasn't disappointed! The acting was wonderful, especially by Will Smith and his son. There's no sex. This movie is definitely one you should not miss, and is worth the money to see it in the theater, and to rent it when it comes out.
