a) 听力

Many of these duties can give rise to problems but a bank customer, unlike, say, a buyer of goods, cannot that the law is loaded against him.

When, for example, a customer first opens an account, he instructs the bank to debit(借记)his account only in respect of cheques by himself. He gives the bank sample of his signature, and there is a very rule that the bank has no right to pay out a customer's money on a cheque on which its customer's signature has been forged(伪造). Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has warned that threats to the nation's security and stability will not be endured.

In a rare televised speech, he praised the Gulf state's security forces as the "shields (盾) of this homeland".

After he spoke, state TV announced a series of royal orders promising a higher minimum wage, pay increases, an anti-corruption drive and an expansion of the security forces.

Saudi Arabia has largely escaped the mass protests shaking the Middle East. But in the country's oil-rich Eastern Province, bordering Bahrain where Saudi Arabia has sent 1,000 troops to help put down unrest, there have been protests from the minority Shia Muslim (什叶派穆斯林) population.

The new benefits amount to tens of billions of dollars in spending. King Abdullah previously revealed a package of $37bn (?22.7bn) benefits for Saudi citizens when he returned home last month, after months spent recovering from surgery in the US.

His statement and the royal orders that followed failed to make any mention of an expected change in the government or any concessions (妥协) on political rights. Saudi politics is tightly controlled by

It?s reported that scientists have found a way to determine roughly where a person has lived just using a strand (缕) of hair, a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims .

The method relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people?s hair.

“You?re what you eat and drink, and that?s recorded in your hair,” said Thure Cerling, a geologist at the University of Utah.

While U.S diet is relatively similar, water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns. The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as rain clouds move.

Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable , but traces of both elements are also present as heavier isotopes (同位素). The heaviest rain falls first. As a result, storms that form over the Pacific deliver heavier water to California than to Utah.

Similar patterns exist throughout the U.S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen isotopes along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds to about two months.

Cerling?s team collected drinking water samples from 600 cities and constructed a map of the regional differences. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from 65 barber shops.

They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad regions roughly corresponding to the movement of rain systems. “It?s not good for pinpointing,” Cerling said. “It?s good for excluding many possibilities.”

Todd Park, a local detective, said the method had helped him learn more about an unidentified woman whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake. The woman was 5 feet tall. Police recovered 26 bones, a T-shirt and several strands of hair. When Park heard about the research, he gave the hair samples to the researchers. Chemical testing showed that over the two years before her death, she moved about every two months.

She stayed in the Northwest, although the test could not be more specific than somewhere between eastern Oregon and western Wyoming. “It?s still a large area,” Park said “But it narrows its way down for me.”

72. Which of the following is the scientists? new discovery?

A. The chemical composition of hair varies.

B. Hair may reveal where people have lived.

C. Weather patterns affect the growth of hair.

D. There are chemical variations in drinking water.

73. What did Cerling?s team make in their research?

A. A map showing the regional differences of drinking water.

B. A map illustrating the movement of rain over the Pacific.

C. A method to measure the amount of water in human hair.

D. A collection of hair samples from various barber shops.

74. What does the italic word “ pinpointing” probably mean in the passage?

A. proceeding rapidly B. proving easily

C. locating exactly D. defining roughly

75. According to the passage, what is the practical value of Cerling?s research?

A. It helps analyze the quality of water in different regions.

B. It helps the police determine where a crime is committed.

C. It helps identify the drinking habit of the criminal suspect.

D. It helps the police narrow down possibilities in detective work.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

Bullying(欺凌)can take a variety of forms, from the verbal or called hurtful names to the physical, being kicked or hit as well as indirect forms, such as being excluded from social groups. A survey I conducted with Whitney Snider found that in British primary schools up to a quarter of pupils reported experience of bullying, and about one in ten cases were persistent. There was less bullying in secondary schools, with about one in twenty-five suffering persistent bullying, but these cases may be particularly hard to deal with.

Bullying is clearly unpleasant, and can make the child experiencing it feel unworthy and depressed. In extreme cases it can even lead to self-murdering, though this is thankfully rare. Victimized pupils are more likely to experience difficulties with interpersonal relationships as adults, while children who persistently bully are more likely to grow up to be physically violent and convicted(有罪的)of anti-social offence.

Until recently, not much was known about the topic, and little help was available to teachers to deal with bullying. Perhaps as a consequence, schools would often deny the problem. “There is no bullying at this school” has been a common saying, almost certainly untrue. Fortunately more schools are now saying, “There is not much bullying here, but when it occurs we have a clear policy for dealing with it.”

Three factors are involved in this change. First is an awareness of the seriousness of the problem. Second, a number of resources to help handle bullying have become available in Britain. For example, in Scotland Guidelines for Countering Bullying and Behaviour in Post-primary School was published in 1993. Third, there is evidence that these materials work, and that schools can achieve something. This comes from carefully conducted “before and after” evaluations of interventions(干预)in schools, monitored by a research team. In Norway, after an intervention campaign was introduced nationally, an evaluation of forty-two schools suggested that over a two-year period, bullying was halved.

(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
