A

How to keep fit

Running

Running will help you lose weight faster than any other activity. It also strengthens (加强) your heart, lungs, and leg muscles (肌肉). But it can hurt your joints (关节). If you feel ache in your knees (膝盖), you need to stop and choose a different activity.

Walking

Walking puts less stress (压力) on the body than running. But you need to get your heart beating faster to see results. This means you’ll need to walk fast. Walking can also help you lose weight. Swimming

Swimming is a great way to strengthen different parts of your body. But it is not a good way to lose weight. The water in a swimming pool is cooler than our body temperature. The body naturally protects itself from the cold by keeping fat.

Cycling

Riding a bicycle will help you lose weight and work leg muscles. But be careful! If you live in the city, you should stay on bike path and away from traffic.

A sweater label may tell you to wash it in cold water. The label on a coat may say ―dry-clean only‖. Washing may ruin (毁掉) this coat. If you do as the directions say on the labels, you can keep your clothes looking their best.

Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned. Dry-cleaning is expensive. When buying new clothes, check to see if they will need to be dry-cleaned. You will save money if you buy clothes that can be washed. You will save money if you buy clothes that are well-made. Well-made clothes last longer. The Peppered Moth, a kind of insect (昆虫), is found in

England. It is light brown in colour and likes to settle (定居)on trees

which are also light brown. This makes the moth difficult to be found

and birds are less likely to notice and eat it.

But with the development of industry (工业), smoke from

factories began to reach the trees where the moth settled. It made the

trees blacker. Then something very strange happened in industrial

areas. The Peppered Moth began to change colour. It became darker as well. Though the change took several years. Some scientists soon noticed that newly-born moths were a little darker than usual.

A scientist called Kettlewell decided to make a careful study of this phenomenon (现象). Around noon on October 7, 2005, my Russian-born wife Nafisa gave birth to our daughters, Lara and Hana. I had lived in the United States for over 20 years, but moved back to Pakistan in 2000 to be with my father during the final years of his life (he died in October 2004). I was working as a school principal (校长) in Islamabad.

After spending the day at the hospital, my mother and I went home at about 9 p.m., while my sister Elmira stayed on with Nafisa and the babies. I was so excited that I hardly slept that night. Nafisa had asked me to bring her some fresh fruit, so the next morning I drove to a market next to the Margalla Towers. At the same time, my mother stayed at home.

Just before 9, as I was picking out some apples and bananas, the ground started to move from side to side. The shaking (抖动) became stronger and the air filled with strange noises. Everyone in the

market rushed outside and started crying. Finally, after several minutes, the earthquake (地震) stopped. Part of the Margalla Towers had fallen down. People covered with blood (血) could be seen everywhere. Later I learned that when the ground started shaking, Nafisa and Elmira carried the babies and rushed out of the hospital. By the time my mother and I arrived at the hospital, they were resting on the grass. Just as we were moving back into the building at about 3 p.m., another strong shaking hit.

The aftershock (余震) continued for several days. Whenever the shaking started, we just held the babies and tried to calm (使平静) each other. We felt completely helpless. Still we were among the lucky ones. The earthquake had destroyed much of Kashmir — thousands died and many more were left homeless. Many of our friends had been killed.

My school reopened a few days after the earthquake. The following weeks at the school were full of worries. During the aftershocks, I had to sound the alarm (警报) to all 3,000 students and 300 teachers. Much of the time the school was strangely quiet. The students stayed in small groups rather than run around and play. As a principal, I was used to telling students to keep quiet and calm. Now I started to miss all that noise.

Like so many people in Pakistan, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find out why we had to

八、阅读短文, 根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

As everyone knows, the law in most countries nowadays demands (要求) that all children receive an education. However, do you know that a number of parents make special arrangements to educate their children at home? This happens mainly to the children who have serious health problems or learning difficulties, or are especially gifted (有天赋的).

Whatever the reason, there are certainly some advantages of educating children at home. First, they can learn at their own speed, spending more time on the subjects which they find difficult. Second, it is easier for them to pay attention since they don’t have the distraction (分心) of noisy classmates. Finally, they learn more in a one-to-one situation, as they get the full attention of the teacher.

On the other hand, learning at home is not without drawbacks. For one thing, children who do not go to school lack (缺乏) experience of making friends with other children. As a result, they do not learn the social skills needed in later life. Moreover, they are less motivated (激励) to work hard, because they have no one to compare their progress with and to compete against.

All things considered, I believe children should go to school. Education is not only a matter of learning facts — children also need to learn how to get along with others, and to develop their personalities. I feel they can only do this by mixing with other children in a school environment.

64. Do all children receive an education at school nowadays?

My class will put on a short play in English at the end of the year. Yesterday our English teacher gave us copies of the play.

―Choose a character in the play that you’d like to be,‖ she told us. ―This afternoon you learn a few lines of this part for homework. Then tomorrow you can say those lines in front of the class. I’ll decide who plays each part.‖

I wanted to have one of the bigger parts in the play, so I choose the part of the king. He has a lot of lines to say. I learned them by heart.

This morning in our English lesson we had to say our lines. I acted the part of the king. When I said my lines, I put a lot of expression into my acting. I thought I acted really well.

Everyone in the class read a part and then the teacher decided who would play each part.

Many of the students in my class couldn’t act at all. They couldn’t even read without making lots of mistakes. I was sure that I would get a big part in the play.

However, the teacher gave me the part of a soldier. He has only one line. It is, ―Yes, sir!‖

I was very disappointed. At the end of the lesson I went up to her and asked her why I had such a small part.

―You put too much expression in your acting,‖ she said. ―Good acting is not big acting. It is acting the audience can believe in.‖

I think I know what she means.

Sometimes the most difficult thing about feelings is sharing them with others. Sharing your feelings helps you both when your feelings are good and when they aren’t so good. Sharing also helps you to get closer to people you care about and who care about you.

Before you can share your feelings with someone, you have to know what feelings you have. Making a list of your feelings can help. You can do this in your head or by writing them out on a piece of paper or even by drawing pictures.

If you’re feeling sad, worried, or upset, you’d better tell someone. If you keep such feelings locked inside, they can even make you feel sick! So if you talk with someone who cares for you, like your mom or dad, you will start to feel better. But what if you don’t want to talk with your mom or dad? Then find another trusted (可信赖的) adult. Maybe this person can help you talk what you mean, try explaining it in a different way. Is there anything you think could be done to make things better? If so, say it.

53. You also need to when you want to talk about your feelings.

A. find a quiet place B. make a small talk C. choose the right person D. choose the right time

54. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Sharing feelings helps you to get closer to people.

B. Keeping bad feelings locked inside can make you sick.

C. It isn’t helpful that you share your feelings when you feel good.

D. Many people find it difficult to share feelings with someone.

55. What can we learn from the passage?

A. All people feel shy about sharing their feelings.

B. Children need to share all their feelings with their parents.

C. Kids should try their best to deal with the problems they meet.

D. It’s good for people to share feelings with a trusted person.

D

Comets(彗星)are parts of our solar system(太阳系). Like the planets, they go around the sun. But comets are not made of solid rock like planets. A comet is a ball of dust, stones, and ice. Many people call comets dirty snowballs.

The ―snowball‖ may be only a few miles across. But when the sun heats the ―snowball,‖ much of it is changed to gases. The gases spread out and form the comet’s head, which may be thousands of miles across.

A comet moves fast in its trip around the sun. But when we see it, the comet does not seem to move. That’s because it is so far away. The moon moves fast, but when you look at it, you can’t see any motion. That’s because the moon is far away.

So comets do not rush across the sky. You cannot see any motion. But if you look night after night, you can see that a comet changes position among the stars. If you watch the moon night after night, you’ll see that it also changes position.

Each year astronomers discover new comets. Some of them are seen only once. They make one trip around the sun and then go way out into space. The sun’s gravity(重力、引力)cannot hold them.

Other comets, like Halley, keep returning. They have been captured by the sun. Halley’s earliest visit was probably 3,000 years ago. It may keep returning for another 3,000 years.

But every time a comet goes around the sun, the comet loses part of itself. Gases and dust are pulled out of the comet. That’s why Halley is now dimmer than it used to be. Next time it visits us, in 2062, it

may be even dimmer. Each visit it may get dimmer and dimmer, until it finally disappears.

56. What is this passage mostly about?

A. Comets and the sun.

B. Why comets are like snowballs.

C. Who discovered the first comet.

D. Facts about comets.

57. According to the passage, some comets have been ―captured by the sun.‖ What does the underlined phrase mean?

A. The comets are rushing into the sun.

B. The comets have been brightened by the sun.

C. The comets are stuck in the sun’s gravity.

D. The comets have been burned by the sun’s heat.

58. How does the author help the reader understand what a comet looks like?

A. By telling about a famous one.

B. By explaining how far away it is.

C. By describing how fast it moves.

D. By describing it as a dirty snowball.

59. What is the most likely reason the author wrote this passage?

A. To give information about comets.

World Book Day falls on April 23 every year. It was set up by the UNESCO in 1995 to encourage people, especially teenagers,to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers, for example, William Shakespeare, born or dead on that day.

Many countries celebrate World Book Day. Take UK as an example. On that day, millions of schoolchildren can buy books of special price, a much lower price than usual, in any bookstore. It has been done every year since 1998.

World Book Day is also celebrated in China. Wen Jiabao, Premier of China, does lots of reading every day. On World Book Day 2009,he called on people to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. "Books can not change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading," he said.

Why do people like reading? One big advantage is that reading helps us become more

knowledgeable and more intelligent. Also, reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Besides, reading gives us information about other cultures and places of the world. When we read, we may find many things that are unfamiliar to us. We would have to use our brain to think about them or do more reading to find out the answers. The more we read, the more we know. What’s more, reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English.

―Reading makes a full man.‖Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world and perfect us. So it is necessary for us to spend time on reading every day.

My Happy Life in the Future

In the future, I’ll be a manager. As a manager, I’ll have my own robot. It’ll work in my factory. It can help with the most unpleasant jobs. For example, carrying heavy things over and over again. I’ll live a happy life with my family in a big apartment with 10 rooms. During the weekdays, I’ll wear a suit. On the weekends, I’ll dress more casually. I might even keep a pet in my room. How happy I will be.

作文范文:

Many students are going to volunteer their free time to help others in the coming winter vacation. We did a survey in our class. Here are the results. Most of the students would like to go to the old people’s home. Some of them prefer to visit the sick kids in hospital. And the rest want to clean up the city parks.

I am willing to go to the old people’s home. What the old people need most is good company because they are very lonely. So I will chat with them to comfort them. I can even sing and dance for them, besides, I will help them clean their rooms.

In general, it is meaningful to do volunteer work. Not only can I help others, but also I can improve myself at the same time.

They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from the I would become more mature(成熟的) and responsible about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money.

Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they a great deal. These kinds of experiences are probably rare(稀少的)for children in many countries but in the US they are fairly common. Most parents start their children at a young age to do small things by themselves. By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had

For as long as I can remember, Grandma’s plentiful tomato garden has been a sign of summer’s end. Each September, just as the decreased heat of the sun suggests cooler days, Grandma requests (ask for

something) my help in her tomato garden. I’m sure that she cannot pick tomatoes without my youthful eyes and quick mind. She says we need to examine each tomato and agree on its readiness for picking. While Grandma’s request for my help in the tomato garden is always the same, her desire for my help seems to increase each year.

Grandma has eyes for finding even the tomatoes hidden by undergrowth and other tomatoes. I,

however, just turn circles looking for the ones I think Grandma will like. I spot what looks like a ripe(成熟的)tomato, head in its direction, and then get sidetracked by another that appears to be equally ripe. I usually end up watching Grandma and trying to stay out of her way, which seems the only way my eyes and mind are useful.

There we are, lost in the tomato vines(藤). Grandma’s eyes are always knowing, and they are no different in the vegetable garden. From afar she spots (notice) what looks like a ripe tomato. As she walks toward the garden, she evaluates the tomato for a second time, but from a different angle. I already know it will end up in the basket with the pile of others Grandma has carefully chosen. However, Grandma acts as if she needs a final look to be sure. She calls me to her side, kneels beside the vine while enjoying the

warmth of the fading sunlight on her face, and grasps the tomato in her hand. She turns each round, red ball toward the sunlight before disconnecting it from the vine with a half-hearted smile.

She then looks at me. I nod my head and smile. Grandma assumes I smile in agreement with her tomato selection. I know I smile, instead, at her.

52. Why does Grandma ask the author to go to the tomato garden with her?

A. He can help pick more tomatoes. B. He can learn the hardship of labor.

C. She enjoys staying with him while working. D. She tries to share tomato harvest with him.

53. The second paragraph shows that the writer _________.

A. isn’t good at picking tomatoes B. doesn’t like to stay with Grandma

C. thinks his eyes and mind are useful D. is trying to be out of Grandma’s sight

54. What’s the best title of the story?

A. Gardening—good for my Grandma. B.Growing Grandma. C.Gardening—good for my growth. D. Picking tomatoes.

A recent study offers a picture of how dangerous it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a

16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal(致命的)accident as

a teenager driving alone. However, the possibility of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional (added) passenger.

It was also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late night accident.

Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with ―really stupid behavior‖ than with just a lack of driving experience. Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to help solve the problem is to have states setting up so-called graduated licensing systems(等级执照制). A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove that he/she is able to drive in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with a limited number of passengers, before graduating to full driving on his own. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place. The systems have reduced teenage driver crashes(相撞), according to recent studies.

55. Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?

A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p.m.

B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.

C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.

D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.

56. According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly because __.

A. their preference for driving at night B. their lack of driving experience

C. their careless way of driving D. their driving with passengers

E

In the Caucasus region(高加索地区), nearly 50 out of every 100,000 people live to celebrate their 100th birthday, and many don’t stop at 100! By comparison, in America only 3 people in 100,000 reach 100. But these Caucasus people aren’t alone. The Pakistani Hunzas, who live high in the Himalaya Mountains, and the Vilcabambans of the Andes Mountains in Ecuador seem to share the secret of long life too. These peoples remain healthy in body and spirit despite the passage of time. While many older persons in industrial societies become weak and ill in their 60s and 70s, some Caucasus people aged 110-140, work in the fields beside their great-great-grandchildren. Even the idea of aging is foreign to

them. When asked, ―At what age does youth end?‖ most of these old people had no answer. Several replied, ―Well, perhaps at age 80.‖ The very youngest estimate was age 60.

What accounts for this ability to survive (live) to such old age, and to survive so well? First of all, hard physical work is a way of life for all of these long-lived peoples. They began their long days of physical labor as children and never seem to stop. For example, Mr. Rustam is 142 years of age. He remembers his life experience: the Crimean War of 1854; the Turkish War of 1878; the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. His wife is 116 years old. They have been married for 90 years. Mr. Rustam has no plan of retiring from his life as a farmer. ―Why? What else would I do?‖ he asks. Oh, he’s slowed down a bit. Now he might quit (stop working) for the day after 6 hours in the field instead of 10.

All these people get healthful rewards from the environment in which they work. They all come from mountainous regions. They live and work at elevations(海拔)of 5,000 to 12, 000 feet(1,660 to 4,000meters) above sea level. The air has less oxygen and is pollution-free. This reduced oxygen environment makes the heart and blood vessel(血管)system stronger.

Another factor(因素)that may lead to the good health of these people is their isolation. To a great extent, they are separated from the pressure(压力)and worries of industrial society.

Inherited(遗传的) factors also play some role. Most of the longest-lived peoples had parents and grandparents who also reached very old age. Good family genes may, therefore, be one factor in living longer.

Finally, although these three groups don’t eat exactly the same foods, their diets are similar. All of them eat little animal meat. Their diets are full of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, cheese and milk. They never eat more food than their bodies need.

It is clear that isolation from urban pressure and pollution, clean mountain air, daily hard work,

moderate diets, good genes, and a youthful approach to life all lead to the health and remarkable long life of all these people.

57. What is the main idea of this article?

A. Cause and effect of long-lived life. B. People in the world enjoying a longer life.

C. Factors leading to the health and long life of people. D.A description of several societies where people living a long life.

58. ―The idea of aging is foreign to them‖ means that _________.

A. they don’t care much about their age B. they have no idea of how old they are

C. they won’t say anything about their age until they are asked to D.the idea of getting old has never come into their mind

59. How do you think the writer feels about these long-lived people?

A. He is much impressed with them. B. He doesn’t care a bit about them.

C. He hopes that they will live a still longer life. D. He doesn’t think their life is full of pressure and worries.

七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的六个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共8分,每小题2分)

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about making choices. In this way you can make healthy balanced decisions. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.

Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. 62 But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. It is also perfectly natural at this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.

This period is a part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey. There will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not even see all of your classmates again.

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. 63 So making the right

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)

On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke, dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the Over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone.

At six o’clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? Had somebody got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry. Had anything been taken? She went from room to room, checking. Yes, some things were missing — her small radio, her spare watch, a camera. That was all, she thought; but she couldn’t be sure just yet. She was annoyed, of course, but rather glad that nothing had been thrown about.

Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door — ―a master key‖ perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn’t go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through the garden and the back door. She settled down to wait.

It was just after four o’clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. With the kettle(壶)of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire(金属丝)appeared through the letter-box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob(门把手) on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout

outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove. The wire fell to the floor, the hand was pulled back, and Mrs. Clarke heard the sound of running feet.

That evening she reported the matter to the police. They were not too pleased, but they came and took away the wire and the skin. ―It was only self-protection,‖ she told the officer. ―An old woman must try to look after herself.‖ With the help of a doctor, the police found the man and recovered Mrs. Clarke’s things. She has become something of heroine at the Over 60s Club.

Dear Mike,

I’m sorry to hear that your bag has lost on the playground. You don’t have to worry about it. I think it may be picked by a student or a teacher. Perhaps he’s trying to find the owner of the bag. You’d better go to Found and Lost to look for it, and you also can write a Notice: your name, your telephone number and what’s in the bag. You should believe your bag must belong to you.

I hope you can find it as soon as possible. If you find it, please call me.

Yours, Tom
