雅思口语: 话题范例Tourist

  下面文章是为大家介绍的雅思口语话题范例,以供大家参考,希望能给大家带来帮助。

  1. Do you think there are different types of tourists

Yes, of course there are different types of tourists. There are people who are all out sightseeing fanatics. They must see everything, go everywhere, and taste every significant meal in a city. They believe they have to do it all, or they will miss out on something. These types of tourists are usually taking pictures of everything, and have a set plan on how they will attack a city. Then there are the more laid back tourists that travel in order to relax. They do not have to see everything; they just make the best of what time they have. They enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere away from all the pressures of work and home. These types of travelers do not plan out their vacation; they just take it.

  2. What kinds of places do Chinese people prefer to visit

In the past, Chinese were not allowed to do much travelling, unless they have a lot of money or connections. Now people from China are more free to go abroad, but most still choose to travel in China. For example, in the summer places with beaches are the hottest places to go. People go there to enjoy beautiful sunshine, to get a great tan, and to go surfing. During the winter Yunnan province is very popular, because all four seasons there the weather is like spring. Also since there are many Chinese minority groups located there, people can experience local customs.

  3. Besides natural scenery what other things do tourists like to see or do

Many tourists like going to historical spots that gives a city or area significance in the world. It creates an interesting story to tell your loved ones when you return home. Many also like to eat exotic foods that they may not be able to get at home. Many like to go shopping so that can bring gifts back for their family and friends. Tourists usually like to buy unique and special gifts. They also like to buy things for themselves, so that they can remember the experience that they had.

  4. Most people think that natural scenery is more attractive than modern buildings. Why do you think they feel this way

Most people think that natural scenery is more attractive than modern buildings, because natural scenery is unique and is very relaxing. Modern buildings give the feeling of work not relaxation. The true reason we travel is to get away from the usual. Modern buildings can be seen at home. I believe that no man-made design can compare to that of Mother Nature. Modern buildings are also in the heart of a town with many people, who are busy with their everyday lives. When you go to a place in nature, where there are vitally no other people, you can get a true sense of peace and relaxation; you are truly away from the complexities of modern life. There are no worries in nature and no work needs to be done for things to exist. It is just there and so are you.

What kinds of leisure activities are popular in China?

Well, that?s quite an interesting question. Uh…how can I put it? Maybe I can put it this way. In truth I would have to say that it really depends.

For young people like me, I guess the most popular leisure activity would be playing online games. Take the famous online game WOW as an example, as far as I know, the game has more than 20 million users in China.

Whereas on the other hand, for the older generation like my parents, I assume their favorite pastime would be playing Mah-jong, because as you know, this traditional Chinese game is often regarded not only as a game but also a good way to socialize with family members or neighbors in China.

What kinds of sports/physical activities are popular among college students in China?

You know, in campus, if you play basketball really well, chances are that some pretty girls might be attracted to you and a case in point is that campus basketball stars always have the most attractive girlfriends.

Whereas on the other hand, for girl students, I assume their favorite physical activity would be doing YOGA,because as you know, almost all the girls I know believe they are overweight and they regard YOGA as an excellent way to keep their body shape slim.

What?s your name?

My Chinese name is Yu Weiguo, which was given by my grandfather, meaning a great and prosperous country in Chinese.

Where are you from?

I am a local resident in Shanghai, where I have been living since I was born.

I am from Dalian, which is a coastal city in the north east China famous for seafood.

Tell me about your hometown.

Well, I think today?s Shanghai is totally different from what it was hundreds of years ago.

In the past, Shanghai used to be a small village on the east coast of China whose incomes exclusively come from fishing.

Nowadays, however, as one of the biggest cities in China, Shanghai has become the financial hub in the country and boasts for its convenient transportation and services.

Well, as you can probably guess, I come from Beijing, where I have been living all my life. Although at the moment I am studying in another city-Tianjing.

I suppose if I have to describe Beijing, the first thing I would say is that it is absolutely enormous, maybe even one of the biggest cities in Asia I guess. It is so big that even the locals have problems finding their way around.

Another significant characteristic is that it offers examples of both classical and contemporary architecture. Actually some of the China?s most renowned landmarks like Forbidden City are ?slap-bang? in the middle of Beijing.

Are you a student or are you working now?

I am a senior majoring in Chinese in Shanghai University, which is also the school where current mayor of Shanghai graduated.

What are you studying?

Well, you know as a college student majoring in legal English, I have to study both English and law courses.

For English courses, I study listening, speaking and translation courses, in which I believe I?m doing quite well because I have been interested in English since I was kid.

(In fact, representing my university, I took part in the national English speech contest and managed to finish the competition as the runner-up, which might be seen as a proof of my English level.)

(To be more specific, I am quite confident of my pronunciation, which is commented as authentic British accent by my friends from UK.)

Where in contrast, I must admit that my performance in law courses, which include international law and domestic law, is quite unsatisfactory due to the fact that I find it hard to make myself interested in this section, which is actually quite boring from what I see.

Do you like listening to music?

Well to be quite honest, in general I would say that I?m totally mad about music, specifically RAP, which rocks me up whenever I listen to it.

As well as this, I am also a fan of classical music, in particular some world class masterpieces by Mozart or Beethoven.

Listening to the classical works, you feel like being indulged in a melody paradise.

And only in such time would I feel fully relaxed from the heavy working stress.

What kinds of restaurants are popular in your country?

OK, certainly there are quite a range of widespread restaurants in China, with restaurants which serve Sichuan food enjoying the greatest popularity.

I assume they are so popular because Sichuan food, which is often quite spicy, is to the Chinese people?s taste as well as economical.

In fact, it is quite common that people have to stand in queue waiting for about 2 or 3 hours before they could guarantee a seat in some most ?hot? Sichuan restaurants in Shanghai.

In addition, another kind of trendy restaurant would be Japanese restaurant.

And the unique aspect of Japanese restaurant is that the food there is often served in an “all-you-can-eat” style, which means you can enjoy unlimited amount of delicious Sashimi, Sushi and etc as long as you have a big enough stomach.

What is your favorite spare time activity?

Well, in this case I think I have to say my answer really depends.

Like for instance, if the weather is fine, I would probably invite my friends to have a cup of coffee in Starbucks, where we could chat over coffee and kill time.

On the contrary, if it is raining outside, I would be happy to be a ‘couch potato’ watching American TV series like Prison Break, by doing so I can improve my English as well as get to know a lot about the United States.

Is fast food popular in your country?

Alright, I guess that on the one hand, fast food enjoys great popularity among young people and this is definitely the case when you see that majority of the customers in restaurants like KFC or McDonald are young guys of my age.

But you also have to understand that to older generation like my parents, it is a totally different story for the reason that older people in China often prefer traditional food like chicken soup, which is more nutritious according to them.

So on the whole, I suppose the answer has to be Yes and No.

Do you get on well with your family members?

Well, I guess on the one hand, I bound with my mother.

It seems that I can always find something in common to talk with her, who is also a pretty talkative person like me.

We almost talk about everything ranging from recent events to gossip news.

While on the other hand, I have to admit that the connection between my father and I doesn?t seem to be that close.

I think this is mainly due to the fact that my father is a quite reserved person, which means he

would prefer to conceal his feelings instead of speaking out.

Would you like to be in a film?

Well, quite honestly I don?t think I?ve ever thought about that, but I guess I would probably consider playing a role in a film, especially when I had the chance to be a character in a Hollywood movie.

You know, if I played a role in a Hollywood movie I would have the opportunity to get to know some world-famous movie stars like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt, who have been my idol since I was a kid and chances are that my talent in acting might be discovered by the professional talent scouts, which means I could be a superstar myself someday in the future.

Describe a singer or musician that you admire

Who the person is

What type of music/songs he she plays/sings

Why you admire this person

Whether this person is popular in your country

So, to start with I will talk about who the person is, and the one I?d pick is Jay, who is a pop singer from Taiwan.

Continuing then with the next point of what type of songs he sings, and what I need to emphasize here is that his music is an excellent mixture of modern pop music and traditional Chinese style, which is so unique that his music could be easily distinguished from other types of music.

Progressing to the subject of why I admire him, I would like to explain that it is his versatile talent in music that deeply attracts me; you know, he writes most of his songs all by himself as well as being able to sing.

As a final point, if time permits, I?d like to bring in the position of whether he is popular in China and I should say not only does he enjoy great popularity in China but also he has huge number of fans all over the world.

Describe a successful businessman you admire

Who the person is

What makes him/her a good leader?

Why you admire this person

Whether this person has influenced you

So I suppose I should commence with the first aspect which is who the person is, and I?d probably select Jack Ma, the current director of Yahoo.com.

Regarding the theme of what makes him successful, and the thing that needs to be highlighted here is that his success should mostly be attributed to some priceless qualities he possesses such as entrepreneurship, leadership and the courage to take risks.

This also explains the reason why I admire him, you know, he is a successful entrepreneur who started from the scratch.

When he set up his company, all he had was a budget of 50,000 Yuan and merely 5 staff.

Hard as the condition was, he managed to lead his team to achieve business success one after another just like the King Midas.

To cut a long story short, as my very last point, with reference to the question of whether he has influenced me, I have to say so deeply has his legendary story influenced me that I have made up

my mind to set up my own company after I graduate following his steps.

Describe a public event you have attended

What the event was

When and where was the event held?

What you felt about it

Would you like to attend the same event again?

Alright, in response to the first question of what the event was, and I?d have to go for the 5th Asian musical festival, which took place in Shanghai 2 years ago, when I took part in the event as an interpreter for the organizing committee throughout.

Continuing then with the next point of what I felt about it, and what I need to emphasize here is that I have mixed feelings towards the festival.

Obviously, there are lots of exciting aspects

Especially when you realize that you can meet the super stars, who generally could be seen only on televisions, face to face.

In addition, I have to say I also tasted a sense of hardship due to the fact that working as an interpreter for the organizing committee was extremely busy and tiring.

Having interpreted and translated continuously for at least 12 hours a day, you inevitably feel exhausted, losing energy and motivation to keep working.

And so finally then, if I have time, in answer to the question of whether I?d like to attend the same event again, really I should mention that tiring as attending the event might be, I would definitely participate in the festival again should I have the chance.

Describe a person who is controversial

You should say

Who the person is

what does he/she do

Why is he/she controversial

what do you think of him/her

Well, actually, when it comes to the topic of a controversial person, a lot of names would immediately come to my mind.

Anyway, if I do have to choose a typical one, I guess I would have to pick a woman called Lu Yan. You know, Lu Yan, who is actually regarded as ugly by most Chinese people, is a supermodel shining on the stage of the world, which means her appearance is the main reason why she is controversial.

You know, in the eyes of most Chinese people, girls like Lu Yan, who have big round face with small eyes, flat nose and thick lips are often labeled as the least popular type.

On the contrary, astonishingly, judged by the appreciation of the aesthetics from the majority of westerners, she is purely a fair lady.

I guess the major explanation for the controversy on her appearance lies in the different perceptions of beauty between the West and the East.

According to most Chinese people, a truly gorgeous woman should have an oval face, long and thick eyelashes, willow leaf-shaped eyebrows, long black straight hair, slender legs and smooth skin.

On the other hand, however, from the standards of many westerners, it is girls like Lu Yan that distinctively represents the typical image of eastern beauties, whose appearances are so different and convey a feeling of mystery, which I guess is highly appreciated by the people in western countries.

Describe a website you have used

What the website is

What you used it for

How you found about it

Whether you have used other websites similar this one.

Ok, then, I guess I could begin by saying something about what the website is, and I think I would have to choose Sina.com, which is one of the most popular websites featuring news in China.

Going on to my next point which is what I used it for, I really need to add that providing a range of news from global update to entertainment or sports news, the website really entitles me to the access to what is going on around the globe.

For example, when the earth quake in Sichuan happened in May 12th, it was just through this website that I knew about the natural disaster.

And now with reference to how I found about it, the point I want to make here is that the website is actually so famous here that you simply don?t have to ?find? it.

You know, just like AOL.com in USA, it is a website that everyone knows.

And so finally then, if I have time, in answer to the question of whether I have used other similar websites, really I should mention that I used to visit other similar websites like SOHU.com, which was actually established earlier than SINA, for checking news Hardly had SINA.com been established when I immediately switched to the latter For the reason that the former one is obviously inferior to SINA.com when it comes to the quality of the news.

Are the ways in which people become famous nowadays the same way that people became famous 100 years ago?

Well obviously there are a number of underlying differences here.

However, I guess that the most significant would be that it is much easier for people today to become well-known than 100 years ago.

I think this should mainly be attributed to the development of different types of media like the internet, which entitles people to be easily known by others all over the world. On the other hand, people living in the world one century ago would find it hard to be a celebrity due to the lack of efficient media.

In addition, a second key distinction would be that contemporary people can be famous as long as you have certain unique characteristic.

Say if you are extremely funny, or even ridiculous, chances are that your unique attribute would be appreciated by a lot of people.

And the fact that a woman nicknamed ?Sister Lotus?, who is known for her extreme narcissism, enjoys great popularity among natives in China is a case in point.

While on the other hand, 100 years ago, only the people who are distinguished in a certain aspect may be discovered and got to know by others.

What is the difference between the way children and adults make friends?

Obviously there are quite a lot of differences in the way kids and adults make friends, with the following two characteristics being the most evident from my point of view.

Firstly, I think a major difference lies in the motive of making friends.

Children tend to make friends purely out of intuition, which means the sole criteria for them is the so called ?chemistry? whilst for adults, often driven by a specific purpose; they tend to make friends with those people who could potentially benefit them.

What?s more, I guess another distinct difference is the stability of the friendship.

You know, children start their friendship with others very quickly, but they also tend to forget their friends easily.

While I think for adults, they cherish their friendship more seriously for they are perfectly aware of what a significant role good interpersonal relationship plays in the contemporary world to achieve success.

What are the advantages of spending time in a foreign country?

Well I suppose that there are quite a few clear benefits.

But it goes without saying that the most apparent would be that living in a foreign country helps us master the language there in a relatively short period of time.

This is without doubt beneficial because surrounded by native speakers, one has a lot of chances to listen to and speak the language, so I guess big progress could be easily made.

At the same time a second bonus might be that you can travel throughout the country you live in. This is definitely valuable since by doing so, you can have a taste of different culture and have your horizon broadened.

What are the major problems related to using computers?

Well, to be honest, there are indeed quite a few problems associated with using computers, with security risks obviously being the most prominent.

You know, sometimes so vulnerable is your computer under attacks from hackers that it could potentially reveal your privacy.

Actually, I think the recent case of Hong Kong star Edison?s erotic pictures being uploaded on the internet may serve as a convincing example.

In addition, it is just due to using computers that some health problems are caused as well.

You know, it is generally believed that computers release a kind of radiation, which deteriorates people?s immune systems, leading to terrible diseases including cancer.

What is your opinion on one child policy?

Generally speaking, I think one child policy could be regarded either as a blessing or a curse.

For the positive side, the practice is definitely beneficial for the control of the population in China, which is estimated to have exceeded 1.4 billion.

For the negative side, spoiled by the parents, the only child in a family is likely to lose certain crucial qualities they should have possessed.

For example, they tend to be more dependent on their parents and often lack of practical hands-on abilities.

What do you think ?real love? means?

Well, that?s a difficult question, especially for someone who has never actually been in love like me.

I think the concept of ?real love?, or ?true love? has various meanings to different people. Some people might define it as a kind of mania in which people indulge in.

From what I see, however, real love means not only a pleasure, not also loyalty and obligation, which indicates that so indispensable does a person mean to you that you are willing to sacrifice everything you have for his or her well being.

What problems are associated with overcrowded cities?

This issue is weighed down with a few problems.

Essentially, one fundamental concern is probably the overcrowded population in a city is likely to contribute to high unemployment rate.

This is clearly alarming because it is evident that the more people there are in a city, the more difficult it is to find a job.

Additionally, another major cause for concern has to be the fact that the over population tends to result in more traffic jams.

And the underlying repercussion of this is that people would have to spend much more time on traveling between home and company.

What are the solutions to this problem?

In my view we could go about this in a number of ways.

In reaction to the initial issue, the most effective way to get to the root of the problem would be that the government should provide some skill training courses to the unemployed to help them improve the professional skills and find a decent job.

Taking on the second problem, the most successful way to confront this would be to restrict the use of private cars by the means like raising the prices of license plates or something like that, which I think is a great way to relieve the problem to a certain extent.

Describe a TV program

What the name of the program is

When you watched it

What it talked about

Why you like this program

I guess I could begin by saying something about the name of the program, and I think I would have to choose The Apprentice, which is an American reality show held by real estate tycoon Donald Trump, featuring business competition.

Going on to my next point which is when I watched it, I really need to add that it was just in this summer vacation that I watched the latest season of the show.

And now with reference to the content of the program, the point I want to make here is that the show is actually a competition testing the candidates? practical business skills, in which 20 candidates would be divided randomly into 2 teams competing each other, with one candidate in the losing team being ?fired? by Donald Trump due to the worst performance or the least contribution in each episode.

And so finally then, if I have time, in answer to the question of why I like this program, really I

should mention that I do have learned a lot, from which you learn authentic English expressions as

well as business skills.

What influence do TV programs have on children and older people?

Well, obviously TV programs have varied influence on children and older people.

For children, it is just through TV programs that kids, who have limited access to the society, get

to know about the outside world.

For older people, watching TV programs seems to be the only way to eliminate their loneliness.

Often watching TV continuously for hours, older people, who are always without company, regard

TV programs as the sole pastime to kill time.

For example the sports man, the political person. But today I would like to talk about Leehom Wang who is a famous sing star in China. He is different from other pop stars. The reasons why I like him are as follows: First of all, I love him because he is a adventurous person, and I love his special character. In music, Leehom always find ways to

challenge himself, to be creative, and make breakthroughs. He said, my spirit needs to be strong and free. Secondly, he is a environmental protector. The concept for which is his latest album is “environmental safety”. Leehom believes music can touch people's heart, and he want to his fans pass on the positive message through his songs. "Save the Environment." Just like a seed, it will one day grow to a big tree. Leehom spreads his love and changes himself and anticipates a more beautiful world. One of the lyrics goes: "I wake up this morning with a headache, it is probably because there is too much carbon dioxide in the air and not enough oxygen." Just like that, he points out global warming. Lastly, I love him for his sexy voice. It always take me away from trouble and makes me happy and enjoyable. For this problem, he insists on making the packaging for this album as simple as possible. The plastic wrap is replaced with recyclable paper. Leehom wants to start off a trend and hopes that others will follow. The album also comes with a specially made pair of chopsticks as a reminder to fans to start changing and get rid of the bad habit of using disposable plastic utensils. 法律: New plastic-bags standards 塑料袋使用规定 (我准备的太长了,要删节) New standards forbid the plastic bags used in supermarkets and shops. the law took effect from June. The Authorities said those bags would pollute the environment. The standards also have other industrial requirements. For example, the government regulate the thickness of the plastic bags, so that they can be reused. If companies fail to conform to standards, they will face with strict punishment. China's new law is to change consumers' shopping habits. If everyone can use just one plastic bag a day, he or she can save around 300 bags a year. Many individuals are in favor of this method to regulate the bad habits. For example, Leehom who is one of the famous sing star said, this law is perfect, we must stop the “white pollution” He also published a new record named “change myself”. He believes music can touch people's heart, and he wants to his fans will pass on the environmental safety through his songs. and save the environment just like a seed, it will one day grow to a big tree. Personally, I believe that a good quality police officer is helpful and warm-hearted. For example, when someone have trouble, he should to the fore at the moment. No matter how dangerous. Secondly, a good policeman should with a character of justice. He must deal with everything objective. how to use law to aginst crime by police officer? Well, it’s hard to say, in my opinion, the police officer should use the law to regulate the illegal activites. For example, when a driver fail to stop at a red light, the policeman can gave hime a ticket to use the traffic law. which kind of law is your favorite? Well, to be honest, I like most of kinds of laws. For example, the recent law of ban to using plastic bags free in the supermarkets and shops. That’s very good for human and the world. It helps us to protect our environment. pollution: um, this is a really difficult question. I think people are more aware of the pollution and they are trying their best to protect their surroundings. For example, the government should introduce methods to regulate the pollution. Plastic bags and boxes are being replaced by paper

products. Every citizen should be educated to be aware of this big issue, we should have the sense of environmental protection everywhere. There are many kinds of pollution. Such as the air pollution, the water pollution and the white pollution. Each of them will affect our health badly. As to the air pollution, the sky is not blue any more. Instead, it’s always gray and you will have difficult breathing. 。。。 he is a walking dictionary, because he have a very large vocabulary. Also there was a rumor going around that he had read the dictionary over a summer. Music: Music plays a key role in our lives. the reason why I hold this opinion are as follows. First, music just as a form of art. We are surrounded by music everywhere and every minute. It’s like the mental food to us, it can offer us entertainment and enjoyment, and it can relax our bodies and minds. Secondly, listening to the music make people refreshed after a day’s hard work. For myself, my favorite music is classic music because it can make me relax, after listening to music, I always fell happy, then I can do work more efficently. 人们怎么听音乐? People always go to concert and buy some CDs and music tapes. 西方音乐的影响 With the trend of globalization, the western music flooding into our lives, and with the proliferation of the western music, we can know the western culture more efficiently. As a result, we can communicate with foreigners easier. 音乐对孩子的影响 Music can do good to children. It can increase the imagination of them. Also, it tells them what is a good music.

Topic19 Wild Animals

Describe a wild animal in China:

I would like to talk about the Saker, a falco cherrug. They live in the north east, north west part of China. Usually the plain areas. There are only about thirty thousands saker living on the earth, more less in China. So saker is under our national second class protection.

Saker looks like eagle, but smaller than it. It has a pair of bright eyes and brown plumage. They are smart too, that's why they are often trained for falconry. Saker is a fierce animal, but once it is trained, it will listen to its master.

Since the the smuggle can earn more than about one hundred-thousand dollors by selling a saker falcon to the Mid-east countries. A lot of people poach them as a way of living. They use very brutal method in order to keep those pity saker falcons being quiet when passing through the customs. Such as fasten their wings and mouths, and even sew their eyes on. I really hope more efforts in the future will be made in the future to protect the saker's environment. Without effective restriction, they could another extinguish species.

Zoo is a really a compromise. It provides opportunities for the people living in the cities, the children to see wild animals. It's also a place to preserve those endangered species. But some animals living there may not feel comfortable for being closed in the steel cages. And I hold the point that people should learn animals straight from nature, instead of zoo.

9.How do you think zoos in China chould be improved?

Many zoos in China are poorly equipped. So I am hopeful that they could be improved by more cooperation with other zoos in the west that are well-operated and have good techniques and facilities we can learn from.

20 Electrical Appliances

Describe a useful electrical appliance that you use at home or at work:

The most useful appliance of mine is my computer. I use it both for study and recreation.

It is a small labtop that I can always carry it with me. Mostly I use it in the classroom or on the desk of my room. I saved money for a whole year to buy it, the large proportion of the money is from my salaries of my IBM summer internship. So I treasure my laptop very much. It has the classical appearance of Thinkpad with a tiny red button in the centre of the keyboard. I think it's the special highlight of my laptop. And you know what? I bought a nine-core battery for it so that it can hold for about 8-9 hours without electricity supply. So it's very useful when I have to go out to attend meeting and make presentation. It means a lot to me because I bought it with my own money and I use it to handle a lot of things, like writing reports, doing homework, watching movies and chatting with my friends.

Electrical Appliances

The ceremony was held by my high school, and the teacher required all parents write a letter for their children to enrouge them do better in the future. At that time, we were about to take the college entrance examination, so the encouragement from our parents was very important.

In the letter, mum told me she and my dad were always proud of me. They took my growing up as the most important thing in their life and they always had confidence in me and believed that I could do well in the college entrance examination. She also told me although sometimes she and daddy might be too hard on me, she really hoped that I could understand them. She wrote some little things throughout my childhood, and some of them I couldn't even remember. I could really feel their love on me and they were so concerned about me.

My parents are not that person who can easily tell their deep feelings to me, so this letter let me know some other aspects of them and it did improve the relationship between us. The old calligraphy art will always be an important part of Chinese culture and we will treasure it forever. We don't want the handwritten be a casualty of modern techniques.

==================================================================Topic23 Furniture

Describe an item of furniture that you often use:

I would like to talk about the wardrobe in my bed room. It was chosen and bought by my mum last year. So it's almost new.

The wardrobe is about 2 meters wide and 2.5 high. It's made of red and white three-ply board with frame made of aluminum. Because it's designed with slidding door, I can easily open it to choose the cloth I'm going to wear. It's convenient for me because my room is a little small, so I don't like a double door design because it will take too much room.

The wardrobe has a large room and is divided into different part for me to put sweater, T-shirts and pants into differents position and two drawers allow me to put my gloves, scarfs and belts in them. Nomatter when I need to go out to attend a meeting or a party, I can always find the clothes I need in a very short time.

Various. The most common style is flats. Because you know China has so many people, living in flats can solve the problem that many people cannot find places to live to a great extent. ================================================================== Topic24 Advertisements

Describe an unforgettable advertisement that you saw or heard.

Almost everybody in China knows LiuXiang left the field when he was attending the 2008 Olmpic Games because of foot problem. Some people disappointed while some people felt really angry and called him a coward. But I believe after seeing the recent CocaCola ads, they will understand him and support him as same as the past.

The advertisement is performed by LiuXiang and his father, who tells Liu in the ads: In your life, you still have thousands of hurdle to jump, this is just one of them. Don't give up, I trust you.

I was so moved when seeing it. For one thing, lots of people thought that a lot companies would break the ads contracts with Liu becaue of his leaving, especially those large companies like Cocacola. However, it didn't break, instead it made a more exciting ads than before. No promoting

of their products, no running scnerios of Liu, just a talk between his father and him. It tells us, life is full of chanllenges and difficulties. But whenever you face with them, there are always family members standing beside you to support you, to encourage you as usuall. You don't have to be afraid, and never give up.

The influence of advertisements

1.How do advertisements attract attention?

It depends on what group of people the advertisement is aimed for. Young people like the hip, fashionable, and cool ads. However, old people tend to be more pratical-mind and plan accordingly. So those in charge of advertising must make clearly that who they will be targeting with their ads. Catchy music also helps the ads to be more attractive.

2.Do young and old people have the same attitudes towards advertisements?

Absolutely not. Every individual has his own unique attitude toward advertisements. No matter older people or young people tend to think most of the ads are boring, times annoying, phony, and shallow. But, if done well, ads can be exciting, attactive, artisitc, and let more people buy the products.

3.Do you think advertisements are a good or bad influence on children?

Bad influence I think. Ads today create a discontentment with what children have and a desire to own more and to be like anyone else or even better the other people. Those phony ads also give children an unrealistic impression of some products.

4.Do you think advertisements actually influence people to buy things? And How?

When seen a lot, ads make products more familiar and ingrained in people's mind, so when they want to buy something, they will take a brand that they recognize.

Government control

5.Does the Chinese government control advertisement in anyway?

Of course. All TV media is controlled in some way by the goverment, so ads must be as well. The goverment prevents the ads that have unappropriate contents being appealed on the TV.

6.Do you think there should be controls on advertising?

Yes I do. Some things should not be advertised, such as cigerettes and some fake beauty products that do not have the affects that they are acclaimed to have. Some advertisements that make harmful things interesting or cool should also be banned because they are not appropriate for the children to watch.

7.Do you think that advertisements for products that harm the health such as cigarettes, should be allowed?

Absolutely no. If they are harmful to human being, why should we advertise them? But even if these advertisements are banned on TV, lots of people will still consume them. So the best thing for people to stop using the harmful products is prohibiting them from being manufactured.

8.Can you think of any example of false advertising?

Yes. Take the Milk Powder Gate for example. It just happened a few months ago. Many manufactories advertise their pruducts and told the audience that their products are healthy and safe. But later, being with thousands of infant getting illnesses, people began to realize, they were watching phony ads. Those companies had no conscience for the public and they should take the total responsibilities.

9.What kinds of products are most often (most easily) promoted by false advertising?

Definitely the beauty care products. Those companies produce cosmetics often hire celebrities to advertise and all the lights, computer techniques make the beauty becomes more beautiful. Actually the affect of using those make ups cannot make you shining as same as the girls in the TV screens.

================================================================== Topic25 A Childhood Present

Describe a present you received when you were a child:

The most memorable gift I received was when I was 9 years old, on the first day of going to the primary school, my parents bought me a bike.

It was not that kind of princess bike with pink tassels hanging off the handlebars. It was a silver bike and it was very small so it was very convenient for little child to ride. At that time, I just learned to ride bike and I really wanna have my own bike for me to ride to school.

I was so excited when I first saw the bike and I felt so proud to ride it go to school because other pupils were all sent by their parents. I also rode it around the campus where my home was located to find my firends go out and play. Besides, I rode it to the shops near my home to buy some necessities.

Though this bike was given to a younger sister when we moved to the new apartment, I miss it very much. It records a lot of happy times in my childhood and the love of my parents.

Giving gifts in China

1.Do Chinese people often give gifts?

Yes, we do. We give gifts on different festivals. Mooncakes for the mid-Autumn Festival and Rice dumpling for the Dragon boat Festival. We also give gifts like westerners do on other's birthdays. And when someone gets married, people will give them gifts, too.

2.What kinds of presents do Chinese people give?

The most popular gift is the Chinese 'HongBao' or 'red envelops'. Money is put in these red envelopes and is given to the people who get married, go to colleges, move into new houses and so on. Sometime people don't know what to give to others and the red envelop becomes a solution.

3.On what occasions do Chinese people send gifts?

Chinese people send different gifts on differents occasions. Mooncakes for the mid-Autumn Festival and Rice dumpling for the Dragon boat Festival. We also give gifts like westerners do on

other's birthdays. And when someone gets married, people will give them gifts, too.

4.If you were going to give a present to a child, what would you give them?

I would like to give the child a dool if she is a girl, and maybe a model car if he is a boy. Because little girls love dolls and they never content with what they have. And little boys like those model toys. Giving them a model car which is made delicately they would be very happy.

5.Do people give the same kinds of gifts to both boys and girls?

No I don't thinks so. People know the boys and girls don't like the same kind of things so they would choose differently. But there are some other cases that if the girl and the boy are siblings, they maybe fight for different gifts, then giving them the same kinds of presents would be the best choice.

Importance of gifts

6.Are expensive gifts always better than cheap gifts?

I can hardly agree with that point of view. Some officials in China often receive expensives wines or cigarrets on the festivals, but do they really feel happy when they receive these things? I don't think so. Besides, some young lovers give presents to each other and those gifts are not expensive, they can still feel very happy. So the expensive gift are not always the best choice, giving the gift that is appropriate for the receiver is better.

7.Do you think it is neccessary for friends to give presents to each other?

I don't think it's neccessary. Friendship is not kept by presents. It's maintained by the honesty and understanding. I do not give presents to my friends very often, but we are still keeping a very good relationship.

================================================================== Topic26 News Reports

Describe a news report that you have recently heard or read about:

Just a couple of days ago, I read a news report on the Internet said growing number of economists worried that second-half recovery was out of reach and that recession will be longer and more painful than current forecasts.

I was a little worried about the world economics but I still felt confidence in it. It's a good chance for the developed countries and develoing countries unite and get through this big challenge. And as a student who is majoring in Economics now, I thought a lot after reading this article. The main reason of this big subprime crisis

is the fanancial structure developed so fast and so unreasonable. And the main goal to recover the recession is maybe regulating the fanancial systems. The economists maybe not optimistic now, but I think they are able to find out the solution for this crisis and let the economy rebound from this slowdown.

Mass Media

1.How do most people in China get their news?

The most common way of getting news is TV. People here in China also like to read newspapers

everyday to get to know the international news and local news. Young people prefer to get news from the Internet.

2.Are most people in China more interested in local news or international news?

It depends I would say. Old people in China tend to know some local news because they care about the environment they are living in. Young people, business man or political man prefer to know the international news. Young people want to know what's going on on the planet they are very curious. And other two types of people want to know international news maybe they are correlated to their jobs.

3.Compare newspapers and TV as sources of news?

Of course the differences between them are quite obvious. You can always see the latest news on TV and you can know the updated infomation about some big events such as US presidential election or Israeli-Palestinian Conflicts. However on the newpaper, you can see more details about news and you can read it wherever you are.

4.How do you think the news media will change in the future?

News in the future...Well I think they may be come from many more directions. With the creation of blogs, people can post whatever they know on the Internet and let others see. And people can always get many news from Internet and they can even choose what kind of news they want to know by RSS.

5.Are young and old people interested in the same news content?

Young people tend to read the news about celebrities or music stars. Old people prefer to read the news that matter more to their countries and their cities.

Children and Reading

6.Do you think it's a good idea to teach children to read before they start school?

Yes of course. The ealier they can read, the easier they can learn more things when they go to school. Also, if you teach them early, it may instill a desire in them to study throughout their lives.

7.What kinds of things do children like to read?

They absolutely love reading stories firstly. And the books with a lot of pictures would attract them too.

8.Do you think the Internet will influence the way people read in the future?

Of course. People have already begun to read electronic book on the computer. And because of the creation of blogs, more and more people would like to post whatever they know on the Internet and let others see them. Besides, people would also like to choose the kinds of articals they want to read by RSS(Really Simple Syndication).

================================================================== Topic27 Public Events

Well, I would like to talk about the world's biggest sports event --the Olympic Games. I took part

in the 2008 OG as a volunteer from August to September, 2008. Chinese people were so proud of China for holding the 2008 Olympic Games and I have a more deep and true feeling of it because I involved in it.

As a volunteer, I took the responsibility of leading the spectators to the right gates and seats in the competetion venue of badminton. I met with so many people from different countries and some of them even asked me interesting questions: such as how long have you been trained as a volunteer. They would also like to praise me such as 'You did a very good job!'

As a spectator, I watched ping pong games and badminton games. The most exciting moment is that when Lin Dan won the final course, all of the people in the venue stood up and cheered for him. When he stood in the centre of the victory platform, seeing the national flag risen slowly with the national anthem, I was so moved and proud for him.

I really love the OG, it not only means swifter, higher, stronger, but also means calling for the world peace. So it's not just a competition, it's a big party of all of the countries.

================================================================== Topic28 Life-changing Moments

The most biggest chance for me to change my life is the moment when I knew I passed the CCER entrance examination at the July First, 2007. You many not know the CCER, let me introduce it to you--CCER's full name is China Centre of Economics Research and it's a department of Peking University. Going there to study economics following some famous teachers, such as LinYiFu, who is now the Vice president of The World Bank, Hai Wen, who is the vice-principal of Peking University, is a lot of student's dream. But entering there is not very easy, you have to pass a very difficult exam and CCER would choose about 100 students from thousands applicants every year. So from then on, I was going to study for two degrees at the same moment, which are Software Engineering and Economics.

Frankly speaking, software engineering is not my first choice before I entered the university, my first choice was economics. Bus since I didn't do well in the college entrance examination, I was adjusted to this university and this major. However, I still have a strong willing to study economics and if I didn't know there was CCER and I could take its entrance examination, I would have to be a programmer or some other occupations. So this chance turned my life into a new direction and I could finally enter into the economics area.

Now though I love economics very much, I find that programming has also been a part of my life. It feels good to knowledge both of them.

=======================================================================Topic 29 English Class Activities

The best class activities that I ever had took place in my freshman and sophomore year of university in my English class with Mrs.Duan.

On the fisrt class of each term, Mrs.Duan asked us to give a presentation about our holiday life. Everyone had to make a powerpoint and give a lecture for about two minutes. At the first time,

there was nothing special. Most were pretty boring and the class had more of a 'let's just get this done' attitude instead of an 'I like this activity'. But I really prepared a lot for the first time English lecture and I talked about the travel to HongKong and Maucau. Though I was a little nervous, I really did a good job. And my classmates were interested in my topic. In the second time, there were more interesting topic showed up and the majority of class were well prepared. And then, giving the lecture at the first class of each term became a thing to look forward to.

All in all, the activity really helped out our language ability. No longer were we just taking words and phrases for our textbooks, we were looking for other places, trying to be more creative. Not only was it really fun, it also encourageed working harder!

================================================================== Topic30 Advice

The best piece of advice that I ever received is from my boss of IBM. I took the IBM internship dating back to last summer, in which my job was a sale specilist. My main task was calling the IT manager of different companies in ShangHai and ZheJiang to find the potential customers.

During the calls, I would ask them a series of questions including how was the contruction of your companie's IT architecture, and have you set up a system for the product line management or human resource management. Of course, some calls were under my boss supervision. She is a very kind middle-aged woman and one day, after work, she had a conversation with me, in which she gave me a piece of advice: I should be more active in the call and be thoughful when asking people's question. In the last several calls, I always showed a little shy so I didn't get much useful information. From then on, I tried to overcome this drawback and to be more outgoing. At the end of the internship, my boss highly praised me for my hard working and at the same time, I appreciated her very much for she directly pointed out my weakness.

Now we contact now and then, and we are just like friends. Her advice is not only useful for my future job, but also benefits me a lot during my interaction with others, cause I used be a timid girl and was afraid to talk a lot. Now I can freely talking in front of you. So it is a very nice advice! ==================================================================Topic31 An Unsatisfactory Purchase

Well, the unsatisfactory purchase that I ever had makes me a little embarassed as I bought a portable stereo as a birthday present for my friend in the last March, but the spring in the battery case fell down once my friend put battery into it.

The stereo should be a surprised and pleasant gift for my friend. I bought it on the online shop named DangDang after looking at several different types of portable stereos. I chose this one because it had a very cute appearance which is a little pink pig. And its noses could play sounds which made it looks very adorable. It could also connect to PC, mp3, mp4 and CD player. So I supposed my friend would like it very much. But since it broke down, I was so embarrassed and wanted to fix it. So I called DangDang to ask for an exchange but I was rejected.

I was really angry at that time and decided I would look in a more reliable place or online shop

and try to get a trusted brand next time when I had to buy such things. And I still feel very sorry for my friend; maybe next time I can buy her a very good gift.

=======================================================================Topic32 Exhibitions

The most interested exhibition that I have ever seen is a traditional culture exhibition named XiangYunXiaoWu of Chinese different provinces, which held in the Olympic park in Beijing, dating back to last summer.

I've seen differenct kinds of musuems since I was a little girl, such as nuture museum, techonology museum. However, I have not seen such a big exhibition showed the soul of our countrie's culture, in which there were beautiful carpet from XinJiang Province, Chinaware from JiangXi, and small scale of beach made of the sand from Hainan Province. The most interesting thing was what I saw in the Tibet area, where an old man sat in the middle of the room with a special and beatiful cloth, on which there were sophisiticated pattern and little ornaments. He was such a responsible man that he sit there still for very long time until I smiled at him and he returned me a smile. Then I asked him whether we could take a picture together. He agreed happily and left a room for me sit next to him. I was so exciting to do so because I've never experienced that before.

The exhibition is so attractive for it not only showed a lot of special historical relics but also offered opportunities to touch them and talk to the resident of those provinces. It also let the foreigners coming to Beijing knew much better of China and felt closer to it.

==================================================================Topic33 Being Late

The most impressive experience that I was late was when I attended a meeting held by a our school, dating back to last winter. The main content of the meeting was listening to a lecture given by an expert from Ministy of Education. And there was only about 15 people invited to listen. Unfortunately, I was the last one who got the invitation, so I had to go to school from my home immediately to attend that meeting. As a result, I was the last one arrived and was late for about half an hour.

To my surprise, all of the people were waiting for me when I entered into the meeting room. I was so embarassing that all I could do was apologize and thankfully they all accepted my apology and we moved on.

=======================================================================Topic34 A time when you help someone

The most exciting helping experience that I would like to share with you was happend when I was in my sophomore year. Actually it was a period, when I helped some of my classmates to study English. I have to introduce a background of this activity--All Chinese University student have to pass the College English Test Level 4, but since a part of my class didn't get that level, so I thought they needed someone to help them. Then I organized a studying group consisting of four students including me as the teachers, and about 15 students who had poor English levels. I took the role as the group leader and held 2 classes a week. After having this activity for about 2

semester, about 80% percent of our students passed the College English Test level 4. They were so happy, so did I. Though I spent a lot of my own spare time to prepare the class and to teach them, I really think it's worth my hard working.

=======================================================================Topic35 Busy Days

The most busiest days that I ever had was the period dating back to last summer when I took the IBM internship and meanwhile I had to prepare for my GMAT-the Graduation Management Admission Test.

That was a very busy peroid for me cause I had to go work at 9 am and worked for a whole day with a lot of tasks to finish. When I went home at night, after I had my dinner, I had to study from 8 pm to about 12 pm. The most funnist part was sometimes I felt I didn't have enough time to study English, so I had to use my spare time at work to do some exercises, and I had to keep an eye on in order not to be caught by my boss and mentor. Fortunately, I got a good score in my GMAT, and what made me surprised was I received the congratulation from my boss, she always knew that I was preparing for the exam and she understood me very well!

After that period, I felt so relieved, and now, thinking about that time, I am so proud of myself for getting through this big challenge.

Topic36 Practical Skills

The most useful skill that I have is operating the computer. I mean the real operation instead of typing something into Word or making simple PPT. Since I am now a student who is majoring in Software Engineering, I could do programming, clear computer virus and I can even fix some hardware problems.

It's not easy to learn computer at first, I typed so slow when I was in primary school. However, since practicing a lot and writing more and more on computers. Now, I almost spend 5-6 hours on computer a day, either writing reports, or programming. And if my familie's computer or my friends' computers are down, I would play the role as the repairer. Besides, I can really make out some beatiful and special type of Powerpoints nomatter for the reporting of our projects or general course lectrues, which can always catch my teacher's and judge's attentions.

I don't know if I would want to pursue this skill as my career, such as being an programmer or architect of software, but as long as I enjoy it, I am going to do it.

=======================================================================Topic37 To start a small business

The business that I want to start is openning a shop in which I can sell different creative stuffs made by young artists or craftsmen. Let me explain my idea in detail------I would like to name my shop by "crazy mind". And I would collect interesting manual product made by some young guys. They could concentrate on design and making themselves and let me do all the business things, such as put products on the booths and sell them. The artists don't have to pay me a lot of money, I

would benefit myself by charging them a small proportion of their products' selling price.

I would like to first find such young artists and let them join me, then I would like to collect fundation to rent a place and sell the products. Finally, the Internet would be my best choice to do some ads.

I want to run this business because it can fulfill my dream--doing some interesting things that ran by myself. I would not only give a platform for the young people to show themselves but also benefit myself from the sales very well. Since there are more and more people begin to interested in the creativity industry, I have confidence in my business that it would succeed!

=======================================================================

Topic38 A large sum of money

It really depends on how much money a large amount is. If it's in the trillions I'd probable buy up the Google or Microsoft.

But since I'm a rational girl, I probably save 40% percent of money into the bank. And then I would use 20% percent or so to buy a big house with a garden and a swimming pool for my family. Since my parents always dream to have a such house. I would then use the 20% to invest in stock markets, real estate or maybe start my own business by this proportion of money. And donoting to charities would use the remaining part.

Frankly speaking, I would feel like I'm having a dream when receiving such a large amount of money. But then I would like to discuss with my families about how to use it. Of course I would very happy, no one could say NO to it!

=======================================================================

Topic39 A Goal you want to achieve

The goal that I want to achieve is openning a shop in which I can sell different creative stuffs made by young artists or craftsmen. Let me explain my idea in detail------I would like to name my shop by "crazy mind". And I would collect interesting manual product made by some young guys. They could concentrate on design and making themselves and let me do all the business things, such as put products on the booths and sell them. ================================================================== Topic40 A Meal

I would like to invite my friends and family members to a western-style meal and I want to hold this meal at my home because it can offer us a family ambiance. I just learned how to make a delicous pizza by a pan. So I really want to show my good cooking by deserving my friends and parents a salad, cream of mushroom soup, and a big pizza with shrimps, bacons, beef, tomatoes and onions on it.

Usually I hang out with my friends in restaurants or KTVs, and since my parents are busy at work, so when we accelebrate for the festivals, we also go to restaurants near my home. It has a long while since the last time when we cook a very formal meal and enjoy the warmth of family and friendship. So I really want to cook a meal by myself and since we tasted almost every kind of Chinese food until now, I mean those famous foods, such as KongPao Chicken, or rice dumplings, wrapped in leaves, so I think it must be fun and terrific if I could cook them a western-style meal.

It would be great to enjoy the meal at home and enjoy the atmosphere with family and friendship, although it might be a little annoying to wash all of the dishes and think about the recipes. I think

雅思口语话题答案

it's worth for me to do so!

Topic2 Children

Children, Education and play

1.How do you think children benefit from playing from toys?

There are a lot of benefits that children can get from playing toys. For example, playing blocks can stimulate a good imagination. Playing dolls can develop a sence of taking care of other people around you. Different toys can help their coordination abilities, artistic skills, and even inspire them musically. But play weapon toys can have a adverse affect on children and might encourage them to be more violent when they grow older.

2.What do you think about children playing electronic games?

It's inevitable for the modern children to play electronic games because children can always find a PC to play. So parents should play an important role to help children balance their studying and playing electronic games. They also have to pick the appropriate games for the children to avoid them from seeing the violent scenes in some games. Playing electronic games is not a bad thing if the children can be guided correctly and be not addicted to them.

3.What do you think are the differences between home schooling and studying at school?

There are a lot of differences between them. Home schooling is more personalized and focused on the individual student's needs, whereas the personal attention is not available in schools because there are other students. Studying at home allows the student to spend more time on the subject he is interested in or questions he doesn't understand. However, in school, the students can develop their communication skills during the class discussion or school activities. So there are good points and drawbacks in both types of studying.

4. What do you think learning theoretical material is emphasized more than learning practical skills?

Learning theoretical material can help you to develop practical skills. I thinks it would be better to keep a balance between theoretical material studying and hand-on experience. But now, most of schools in China put too much emphasis on theoretical teaching because the students are expected to get high marks in exams. Unfortunately, most of the information the students learn in the classroom is not quite useful when it comes to a real job.

5.Do you think education system in China should be reformed?

The education system in China is now under reforming. We are noticing the goverment is trying to make progress in several aspects. You can see the primary schools change their schooling time to 8AM to 4PM instead of 7AM to 5PM. Thus the students have more time to sleep and relax instead of studying intensively. Besides, the schools have adjusted their subjects arrangements by adding some hand-on courses to help students develop pratical ability. Personally speaking, experience is the better teacher, if students can be offered courses with lots of useful information and practice opportunities, as you know, a well-rounded education, they will find jobs more easily.

6.Who usually disciplines children in Chinese families, the mother or the father?

It really depends on the family. But since fathers now are busier with their careers and are often not at home, so the mother is left with the job of disciplining their child. Mother can help to bring up a considerate, tolerant child, while father is

more expertised in teaching the child to be a person with strong determination and persistence.

7.Do you think it's a good idea for children to aim to be a professional athlete?

I don't think so. Unless the child has a special talent in sports and a qualified body, it's extremely difficult to be a professional athlete. It's not a bad job, compared to many, but most who try it will not succeed. We cannot expect there are thousands of James Robert or YaoMing. Most of children need a well-rounded education in their youth instead of being educated only in one specific field, such as sporting. Thus it will do good to their future development.

Topic3 Celebrities

Describe a famous person:

I admire Lin Yi Fu, who is now the vice president of the World Bank. He is not as same as other celebrities because first of all, he is a scholar.

Mr.Lin is a teacher of Centre of China Development Research, Peking University.I am honored to be a student of Mr.Lin when listened to his course of Chinese Economics Topic. His broad knowledgement and responsible teaching attitude made him the one of student's favorite teachers of Peking University.

Mr.Lin's job is not only teaching, he also offers very useful economic developement advices for the Chinese goverment. He plays an important role in chinese developing pathway. Lin is famous for his special points and deep understanding of Chinese economics and developing countries economics. That's why the World Bank chose him to be the Vice President. As you know, one of the World Bank's responsibilities is helping the developing countries constructing a more satisfactory economic environment. They need a person like Lin.

I admire him also because though he is famous, but not arrogant or proud. He is always nice to his students and be punctual at time when he has a class even though he has a lot of conferences to attend. No matter how famous he is, he is always the best teacher is his students' hearts.

Celebrities in your country

1.What kind of people become famous these days?

It's mostly singers, actors and actresses. That's because their careers are all about being seen by many people. Because of the existence of mass media, people can see those celebrities very often and that make them become more famous. The politicians are also famous, but only the one in top positions.

2.Is this different from the kind of achievement that made people famous in the past? In what way?

I think so. In China, there were more political and military leaders who were famous. But now, since people spend more time on TV, internet, it's more easier than before to access those TV seials or entertainment shows. That way the singer, the actors and the actresses become known to public and become celebrities.

3.How do you think people will become famous in the future?

Probably in the same ways they do today. As long as there is mass media, athletes and performers will become famous.

4.What are the good things about being famous? Are there any disadvantages?

The celebrities can use their influences to call on more people to do charities, such helping the children in poor African countries. And themselves would gain a lot not matter from advertisements or shows. But I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Those celebrities have little privacy because people are curious about their lifes thus there are always journalist use every tricks to follow them. Once the famous people do something wrong, they would receive so much criticizes, and sometime they couldn't bear them.

5.How do media in your country treat celebrities?

I think it's similiar to most places. They will be invited to a lot of TV shows, perfomances and interviews. People will like to know about their every thing. But if they do something that is not patriotic, they will quickly lost their popularity.

6.Why do you think ordinary people are interested in the lives of celebrities?

Because curiosity is an instinct of human being, people are interested in everything that is funny, interesting and others' private life. So it's not strange they are interested in the lives of celebrities.

7.Do you think celebrities should appear in ads?

Yeah. They are popular, that why the companies want to pay for them to promote their products. But the celebrities should choose the ads that are reliable. There are lot of failure cases such as a famous actress appeared in a unqualified milk powder ads. She was accused for promoting bad products and was required to compensate for the users. So we can see if the celebrity don't choose ads carefully, there will be a problem.

8.Some professional athletes are very well-paid. Do you think they deserve to be so well-paid?

It's hard to say. Athletes is as same ordinary as other professional employees. From this aspect, they shouldn't be so well-paid. The difference is that the athletes may win prizes and medals for the nation. From a national aspect, they bring rewards for the nation so they deserve a well-paid. Personal speaking, I think they shoudn't be paid that much.

==================================================================

Topic 4 Adventurous People

Describe an adventureous person you know.

I'd like to describe my teacher Lin Yi Fu to you, who, in my opinion, is very adventurous.

Lin is now the vice president of the World Bank and he is also a economics professor of Peking University. He has a very exciting and legendary life. Lin was born in Taiwan and he finished his univerity study in Taiwan, too. When he graduated from the university, he wanted a further study in the mainland of China and he thought the future of China was mostly depend on the mainland. But at that time, because of the political environment, there was no way for a young student to go to the mainland from Taiwan. So one night, without telling his family, Lin swam accross the Taiwan channel. It's hard for me to imagine that Lin swam in the very cold sea water and swam for almost a whole night.

With a little money carried with him, Lin came to Peking University and because of his excellent English and deep understanding in economics, he was invited by a professor from Chicago University to finish his doctor degree in American. It was not until Lin graduated from Chicago University did he reunion with his family. Now Lin has became an expert in the area of economics in developing countries, and I think that's why the World Bank hire him as the Vice President. Lin dedicated a lot to his career and his country. And I think with this amazing courage, Lin adventrued a lot and achieved a lot.

1. Are adventurous activities popular in China?

Yes, as more and more people in China want to find more ways to spare their free time. Especially those young people, they want to try some extreme sports like zorbing and trick BMX. The problems is those adventurous activities are quite expensive to play, and some are not available in China. So I think once their prices could be cut down, and the more facilities could be available, the adventurous activities would grow in popularity.

2.Why do you think people like adventurous activities?

I think curiosity and chanllenging selves are the instincts of human being. So there are always some people want to try those interesting and new things. Also, in the modern society, many people have heavey work load so they need a way to release the pressure. Then adventurous activities become their choice.

3.What do you think are the advantages and possible disadvantage of experiential training?

I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The good things are greater physical dexterity, self-confidence and more awareness of your limits and capabilities. However, if you don't take the precautions properly, it will lead tragidies, such as serious accidents and body hurt.

4.How do you think parents could bring up their children to be more independent?

Parents should give their children enough opportunities to do things themselves within their capabilities. If the children are pamperer too much, they would depend a lot on their parents. Parents should also give children chances to make mistakes. That way the children would realize that in an environment it's ok to make mistakes, and the most important things is learning from mistakes and trying new things.

5.Do children have more freedom today to do what they want than before?

Children today do have more things than before and definitely more opportunities to experience things that were not available in the past. But it's hard to say that they have more freedom to do sth. Sometimes it's the parents expectation decides the things children do.

6.Do children today face more challenges than before?

I certainly think so. Today's society is more demanding and the pressure is greater than ever. Every parent wants their child to be the best and often they push their child too hard. Children today have to study hard and go to many classes to gain more rewards, to go to a good school, to enter a famous university. Personally speaking, it's not a good thing for the children. They are supposed to have a happy childhood.

Topic 5 Leaders

One leader that I admire is Lin Yi Fu, who is now the Vice President of the World Bank. He is actually a leader in economic researching area.

Lin has a amazing courage which made him swam across the Taiwan channle at one night when he just graduated from Taiwan University and wanted a further study in the

mainland of China. But since there was no way for a young student to come to the mainland because of the political environment, he chose to swim over the sea. It hard for me to imagine Lin swam in the cold water for a whole night. I think that kind of courage make him a successful man in the following years.

Mr.Lin is a teacher of Peking University.I am honored to be a student of Mr.Lin when listened to his course of Chinese Economics Topic. He is always nice to his students and be punctual at time when he has a class even though he has a lot of conferences to attend. His broad knowledgement and responsible teaching attitude made him the one of student's favorite teachers of Peking University and I think that's also an achievement as a leader. Lin is famous, but not arrogant.

Mr.Lin also offers very useful economic developement advices for the Chinese goverment. He plays an important role in chinese developing pathway. Lin is famous for his special points and deep understanding of Chinese economics and developing countries economics. That's why the World bank choose him to be the Vice President.

A lot people think according to his achievement in economics, Lin could be a Nobel prize winner in the future.

All in all, Lin is a real scholar, and a nice person, which make him a leader in economics.

Being a leader

1. Would you like to be a leader?

I would like to because I know being a leader requires something great of people. Being a leader will help to bring me out the best in someonem and I want my best qualities to be apparent in my life.

2. Why don't some people want to be leaders?

Being a leader not only means having a strong power authority, but also means taking a lot responsibilities. Some people are afraid to take a lot of responsibilities so they don't wanna be leaders. It's very clear to me as I know some people around me who are not willing to be a leader. My major is software engineering and some of my courses require a team to finish a certain software project. Some classmates just don't want to the teamleader because teamleader have to oganize the team member, hold the meetings, and report the team progress to teacher. A lot of work to do. Things would be more complicated when you play a bigger leader role, such as CEO. So some people just don't wanna be overloaded.

3.Why do we need leaders?

Without a leader, life would be chaos. There would be no rules, no regulations, no

punishments and rewards. A good example is when a country is subjected to a policy crisis, there would be no certain national leader. Thus people would feel unsecured and crime number would rise quickly.

4.What are the qualities of a leader?(or what abilities are needed to be a leader)

I would say a leader needs a lot of dedication and passion for what he is doing. He must be able to state his points clearly and be able to understand his fellows very well. A leader should be the example of what he is trying to teach and should not be over detail-oriented.

5.Is it possible to be a good speaker in front of others and to be a good leader but at the same time not be a good person at the personal level?

Yes, it is. We can see some government officials claim to be disinterested but they graft millions of money. Before being accused, they are good leaders in peoples' hearts. We see actors play very kind characters in the TV serials but do they behave the same way in the real life? We don't know.

6.What are some differences between current leaders and leaders of the past?

Current leaders use more technologies than leaders of the past. They tend to communicate with people more than before. People in China made TV serials to show the stories of the King in Qing dynasty visiting his people. However now, we don't need a special program to show the leaders come to the factories, schools, because visiting people is a normal thing for the leaders. I think it's very good. Only by visiting can the leaders know people's real life and know how to make improvement of their policies.

7.How do people become leaders?

Except all qualities such as willpower, dedication, humility, I think the most important thing is he should be a leader with integrity. He should also be focused but not stressed. And a leader should never stop caring for other people around him, because who would want to follow some who shows no interest in or appreciation of others? I certainly won't.

8. What can people do to encourage the development of leadership abilities in their children?

Don't let the children be over spoiled and ingnored. Parents should give their children enough opportunities to challenge themselves and make mistakes. Only by facing and dealing the problems themselves do the children can grow to full maturity.

9.How do you think leader of the future will be different to current leaders?

Probably in the same ways they do today. And under the more strict supervision by the public, I think or I hope there would be no more corruption.

Topic 6 Neighbours

Describe one of your neighbours:

I would like to talk to you about a neighbor that lived next door to me in my childhood.

Her name Lian Jie and she is the same old as me. We both moved into the new departments so we didn't know anyone. Lian showed up at my door one day afternoon and said: let's play together. From then on we spent a lot of time together, playing dolls, blocks and so on. One time, we played blocks until midnight because we wanted to built out a castle model. And we even sold tickets for vitual 1 yuan to let other friends come and see. Lian is a very optimistic girl so we had a very good time. Though sometimes we quarrled or even fighted, we are still very good friends. We were in a same primary school, Lian always came to my class to find me and we discussed questions together. And if my parents were not at home, I will go to her home to have meal with her.

Now Lian has grown up to full maturity and has become a professional model. I hope she could become a super model one day. No matter how famous she is, she would be always my best friends and neighbour.

Neighbours:

1. Do you think neighbours are important?

I certainly think so. If you ever have a problem you may need to ask a neighbour for help, since they are right nearby. If you are new in a place, you can always ask a neighbour where to find sth. There is an old saying in China: A close neighbor is more helpful that a distant relative.

2.What are the qualities of a good neighbour?

A good neighbour should be friendliness. For example, saying "Hello" when you see each other is a good quality. And he should be tolerent and honest. One of my neighbour, a American boy, occasionally holds parties until midnight and play music loudly. I just beared because I think it's a part of his life. If it does't bother me often, I can be tolerent to that.

3.Now that most people watch a lot of TV, how do you think this has affected relationships with neighbours?

Yes, it had a very bad effect on relationships between neighbours. In the old days, people in China will not shut their doors, they will go out to chat at night, and if someone make a delicious dish, he would like his neighbour to have a taste. But now, a lot of people have become couch potatoes, that keep people from being able to build close relationship with their neighbours.

4.Do you think it's important to teach children how to have good relations with neighbours?

I certainly think so. Let children build good relations with neighbours can not only help to build good relationship between parents and neighbours, but also improve the childrens' communication skills. It's actually a good opportunity for them to learn how to build a good interaction with others.

5.How has the relationship between neighbours changed over the last 20 years?

I think that 20 years ago, people cared more about each other and they trusted their neighbours very much. But now since there are so much violence and dishonesty in the world today, people tend to keep a distance with their neighbours. They are afraid of being cheated or stolen. But I still believe people want to live harmoniously with our neighbours and others arounds us.

Community

6.What are some of the qualities of a good community?

I think the most important quality of a good community is to be unified. It doesn't mean people think exactly the same thing, but means they tend to build close relationships with others and concern about each other. A good community should have a organization to hold some community activities in order to improve the understanding and trust between people.

7. In China, are there facilities for improving relations between neighbours?

Well, there are some but not very many. In the old days, the people in China simply had time and this helped to facilitate relations between neighbours. Spending time really means the most in almost any relationship. Of course having a place to go to mix and mingle with people your own age also helps, you can see neighbourhood reading clubs or bars are springing up in China.

Topic7 A Building in your hometown

Describe an important building in your hometown:

The National Grand Theatre of China

The National Grand Theatre of China in Beijing is one of the most talked-about architectural projects for years. Because of its innovative design, there are various opinions about it; the Theatre is Beijing's foremost cultural center, situated in the heart of the capital. It looks like an egg with fabulous dream in it. At night, all the lights, movement and excitement of a busy theatre can be seen from the street outside. All the performs there are very wonderful and there are also a lot of activities to popularize the knowledgement of music and arts. I have never been there because I cannot get the tickets, but watching a music performance there is one of my dreams.

Forbidden City

Forbidden City is a walled enclosure of central Beijing. It contains the palaces of 24 emperors in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The houses in the Forbidden City have golden tiled roofs and red pillars and are surrounded by high walls with a tower on each corner. The palaces consist of the outer throne halls and an inner courtyard, each palace forming an architectural whole. It was closed to the public, no commoner or foreigner was allowed to enter it without special permission. That's why it is called the Forbidden City. But now it's a vast museum and a major tourist attraction.

1.How do people in China feel about protecting historic building?

I think people are begining to understand principle that old buildings are sometimes treasures to be preserved. Today, most people agree that if a building is an important part of history, then it should be well taken care of. But we should also realize that the it's not enough to just keep the bricks and mortar from falling apart, we also have to keep the hitioric building from being over-touristy. Don't let it be crowded with sellers, shop vendors, tour guides. Last year, I was told that there would be a Starbucks opening in the Fobidden City. That just ruins its appeal to visitors.

2.Is it important to preserve old building?

It depends I think. We should preserve the old buildings that are the important parts of history. But some old building are just wasted space and they are not very unique or special, than I would say it's better to get rid of them.

3.Do you think an area can benefit from having an interesting historic attraction? For sure. Most historically important places are tourist attractions. That can be good, as tourism benefits the local economy. Also, attactions can give locals something to be proud of and a reason to live and work there.

4.What do you think will happen to historic buildings in the future?

I think there be less of them, but the ones that remain will be well-preserved. I would say that a lot of old buildings will become like little islands of the past in an ocean of a modern world. The government will try to preserve those important buildings, I hope so.

Housing

5.Compare old houses and modern house. Which do people prefer to live in?

That's easy. Nearly everyone wants to live in a new house. Though the old house provides people a lot of precious memories to cherish, its appeal is not as strong as running water, electricity, central heating and a well-funcioning management. So I would say people would prefer to live in a modern house.

6.How has housing in China changed, compared to your parents' time?

Housing today means tall apartment building if you live in a city. In the countryside, you can still see those houses remain unchanged. But the conveniences widely available in modern urban housing are many: better electricity, plumbing systems and heating. Many of these were rare before.

7.What changes do you think will occur in the future?

Probably they could be the same as they are today. But I am hopeful that the scientist could invent more environmentally friendly facilities for those modern apartment buildings. Such as using more solor panel, and using hydrogen as the main fuel instead of coal and natural gas.

8. What factors do people consider when deciding where to live?

Scenery, convenient tranportation, availability of stores and restaurants, low noise or pollution level nearby, the list goes on and on. Whether the house has hot water, central heating and whether the neighborhood has a very well secutiry protection. But in the end, the cost of living is the biggest issue. With high enough money, people can afford to be choosy.

9.How do you think the climate of a place effects the way building are constructed(the design)?

It's hard to say. The outer design of the building can be pretty much the same, whether it's in cold, temperate or hot climate. It's more the structure of a building that matters. I am hopeful that the architecture can use special materials to keep the building natually temperate. That will benefits the environment cause it uses less energy to keep it cool or warmer.

======================================================================= Topic8 Your Childhood Room

My childhood room is small, about 6 square meters, but full of warmth.

It had a desk, a bookcase, a bed, and a chair with four wheel. They are not special, but they made my room a very nice place to study. The only special and luxury thing in my childhood room was a piano. I spent a lot of time on playing the piano under my mum's instruction. Because my mum learned music as her major in her university. Though mum was very strictly but I could feel her love when she was teaching me. I'm really appreciate her for she brought me into the music world. So my childhood room is full of love that gives me memories to cherish and to grow up with. Rooms and individually

1.Do you think children should have their own rooms?

Yes. Let the children have their own room can let them learn how to take care of

themselves and not depend on their parents very much.

2.How do children benefit from sharing a room with others?

They learn how to get along with the people they share a room with, and they learn to share their toys, whichi is very important in the later life. They learn to share responsiblity in keeping the room clean and neat. They have someone to play with and don't feel lonely.

3.Do you think people have enough privacy today?

I'm afraid not. Since the development of internent is very fast, people can find anything on the internet, including individual privacy. Human search engine has a strong power to find personal information such as telephone number and home address of anyone. And once they post it on the internet, this certain person will lose all of his privacy.

4.What do you think of people who decorate their house in a very flamboyant manner? They may want to show their social status by decorating their house in this way. This may not always be so, some people may just like this style. Often the decoration is to show their artistic tastes.

5.Have the rooms in houses changed much compared to the rooms of your parents' youth? When my parents were young, their rooms were fill of wooden furniture, but now our rooms have furnitures made by other materials such as man-made material or plastic etc. And there are more conveniences in our rooms: better electricity and plumbing systems, and heating.

6.How do you think the climate of a place affects the way bulding are are constructed? The same to Topic7-Q9

7.How do you think rooms will change in the future?

The same to Topic7-Q7

Places for public Use

8.What kinds of public places does your hometown have?

I would say there are a lot of public places in Beijing. Besides those famous tourist attractions, there are centre parks and open areas for people to jog, do Tai-chi, and so on. There are theatre for people to appreciate elegant art, the museums for people to learn more knowlegde.

9.Do you think it's important to have facilities such as public parks and playgrounds? I think that it is important to have places that are safe and clean for the children. And some public areas for both the elders and the children. They can get good exercise outdoors in a safe environment. I would like to say that it is more important to have some public areas than some skyscrapers that are being built today.

10.Compare public facilities(such as parks) in China today to those of the past In the old days of China, there were not many parks or public facilities. The one that were around were often small and unkempt. But today more efforts are put into keeping the parks clean and the area free from litter. The plants are well taken care of.

11.In your opinion, how will public facilities change in the future?

It's hard to say but I am hopeful that there will be larger and nicer parks made in the future. Those parks can let the people enter without tickets. I also think

that there will be more playgrounds and better public fitness equipements. ======================================================================= Topic 9 A Leisure Centre

Descibe a leisure centre you often go to:

One leisure centre that I really enjoy going to is located in Beijing Language and Culture University. You know, here. It is in a stadium and it is quite nice. One of the facilities that I enjoy using is the swimming pool. I love swimming and since the leisure centre is very close to my home, which lies in China University of Geosciences, I go to swim there very often. I even handled a swimming card just for convenience. This leisure centre also offer comprehensive recreation facilities such as Bowling, Shuffleboard, Snooker tables, Table tennies and Majiang Rooms. But I don't play them very often. The best part is the leisure centre has a glass wall. So when

comes, I would learn dancing from my friend outside the door, we can see ourselves from the glass wall. It's just like a free rehearsal room!

Until now, I havn't figured out whether this leisure centre has a room for yoga or pilate classes. But if it has, once I have time, I will definitely go to take one. Healthy Lifestyle

1.How do Chinese people like to relax?

I think that one of the most common ways that Chinese people like to relax is to go out to a restaurant with their friends or family and enjoy a good meal together. Another way to relax for them is to simply go out for a walk and enjoy the evening or morning atmosphere. It's an excellent way to relieve stress. Chinese also like to read books and the youth enjoy going to Internet cafes and playing computers games.

2.Do you think most Chinese people lead a healthy lifestyle nowadays?

I'm afraid not. Here in China we have really intensive competition that brings a lot of stress for us. Besides, though China is famous for its food, there are many foods we eat are fried with a lot of oil. But people are trying to live in a healthier way.

3.What do Chinese people think about daily exercise? Is it considered important? I would like to say it's mostly the elders in China do daily exercise and they consider it important. But the young people may not that interested in daily exercise. They are too busy at work or they just don't enough money to go to fitness centre with so many sophisiticated machinery. I am hopeful that the people could do more exercises even just jogging everyday.

Leisure and Work

4.Do you think employers should provide recreational facilities for their employees? It would be a good idea to do this. It would increase the productivity because it would increase stamina and mental alertness. The employer's don't have to do this but it would be in their best interests to do so and help to lift the spirits of their employees.

5.Should employees be paid overtime for working on the weekend?

Of course they should be paid. The weekends means a lot for people. They spend the weekend time with their families, or to go out for some fun. Working on the weekend

is a sacrifice, and not to get paid would add insult to injury.

6.How do you think a person can find a balance between the time spent at work and the time spent on leisure?

There is an old saying: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Well the same holds true in reverse: all play and no work makes Jack a poor boy. People should stop working for once an hour and have a breath of fresh air. And if they feel overwhelmed, they should talk to their boss and try to figure out a better task arrangement. I know it's very hard for people now to balance the life and the work, but once they are facing a healthy problem I'm sure they will do so. ======================================================================= Topic10 Hotel

It's hard for me to tell you a really good hotel that I checked in once, because I don't go to other places quite often. But I can introduce you a youth hostel, named Blue Mountain Youth Hostel that I once stayed for couple of days in ShangHai. It is a small hostel located in a bystreet and the room price is very cheap. Besides it has all the convenient facilities such as central-heating system, laundry and hot water shower room. The speical point is that it also has a recreation room contains a DVD player, bar counter, a billiard table and 5 PC that allow you to get on the Internet. The Blue Mountain Hostel tries to make a friendly atmosphere for all of the clients. So it attacts a lot of young tourists from diffent countries staying here. It has rooms for couples and for groups, for example I lived with other 5 girls in a room. The more people you would live with, the lower price you have to pay. And the up limit is 6 persons. I paid only 20 RMB for a day living.

I really had a good time there. For us students, youth hostel is really worthy to stay while you are on a trip.

Tourism

1.Is tourism an important industry in China?

I certainly think so. Tourism means a lot to Chinese economy. Bisides, people here in China love travelling. Every vocation, a lot people will go out for travelling with their families and friends.

2.How has tourism contributed to the developments of your hometown?

Tourism not only brings increases to the local GDP, but also make people be more aware of the value of those historic sites. Because of the attraction of these places there is more of an effort to preserve and improve them. Besides, the hotels and hostels are improving their standards, and the restaurants are learning to change their recipes in order to cater to people from different countries.

3.Has tourism had any bad effects on your hometown?

Because of the fast development of the tourism, many people are forced to move out from their old houses, like those people who originally lived in the houses located in the bystreets. They have to move to the expensive apartment. But they sometimes cannot get enough compensation to buy a new house.

Accomondation When Traveling

4.When people are traveling away from home, what choices do they have for places to stay?

There are many very nice hotels all around China and almost every city has an international hotel. Of course, they are mainly for those business men and political leaders. Young people in China are more willing to live in hostels because they are more cheaper to stay.

5.How have hotels changed(improved) in recent years?

I would like to say the standard of the hotels in China has risen in general. They have more convenient facilities and more options for rooms and prices. The service of hotel is becoming better and better. The owners are getting to know more international service standards to treat their guests well.

6.What facilities should a good hotel have?

First of all, a good hotel should provide the guests everything they need to stay for a while---the hot water, the central heating system, internet and so on. Then it would be better that the hotel has a recreation and fitness centre for guests to relax themselves. And there also should be business centre because some companies may hold their annual meetings or other important meetings there.

7.What could be done to improve the environment in some hotels?

The hotels should be nicely and tastefully decorated. The outside should be clean and the outside appearance should match the inside decor. And there should be plenty of trees and plants to make air fresh.

8.What kind of people are best suited to work in hotel?

I would like to say that the people who can always put themselves in others' shoes, in orther words, they can always consider for their clients can be hired by the hotel. They should be very gentle in that they have to face the complaints of the guests.

9.What can hotel service people do to help tourists?

I would like to say that if the service people are able to understand their guests and tourists, it would be very helpful. In other words, efforts should be made in order to promise that all the service staff have at least a basic knowledge of English. And there also should be a few peoplecan understand other languages. And it would be better if the service personnel can know something of the local tourist attactions so that they can offer some useful suggestions.

======================================================================= Topic11 A Library

Describe a library that you often go to:

I like to go to the library of my university. Actually it has two buildings, which respectively located in north and south of our campus. The sourthen building is larger and contructed later than the northen one. We call it the new library, which is funded by a philanthrope named Shao Yi Fu. It has a very simple but very tasteful outside appearance. The new library has five floors and contains over 2,000 seats. The old one has 4 floors and contains over 1500 seats. And Both two buildings have wireless network.

Up to now, the library houses 700,000 printed text, 60,000 e-books, more than 40 kinds of database resources. It provides the teachers and students a very nice searching system connected to a very huge book database, that can help you find any book you want. I'm proud that our library has a collection that can rank No.2 among

all of the universities in Beijing, only following the Peking University.

I like to study there because our library provides us all the convenient facilities such as hot water for drinking, centre air-conditioning system, and computer room. I especially like the moment when I am reading a novel, sitting at a window with a cup of green tea and letting the sunshine pour on me.

Libraries

1.What kind of people go to libraries most often?

I would like to say it's the students who often go to libraries. Because most of the libraries in our cities are located in the colleges. And they require the people show their student cards or teacher cards when enter in. There are not many other libraries. So citizens just prefer to read at home.

2.Why do u think a library is a good place for reading?

I think the atmosphere in the library is conductive to reading because number one, it has a very quiet environment. And second, you can find many different books there. If you don't want to go on reading one, then you can just pick up another one. And you can meet new friends there with common interests.

3.Even though it might cost a lot to maintain a library, do you think the government should open more public libraries?

I certainly think so. It's very worthwhile to have plenty of libraries even the government may spend a lot of money to do so. Only by reading can the people know more and improve their qualities. That they will bring more value to the society. So the funding of buiding libraries is nothing when compared to the value the people can bring to the society. Besides, since people pay the tax for the country, they deserve more libraries for them to read.

4.Do you think public libraries should be free of charge?

It would be nice if libraries were free, but usually you have to pay a fee or put down some kind of deposit. This is not too unreasonable because if people know they will get the deposit back if they don't damage the book, then they will be more careful. Of course the government should subsidize the libraries thus the people don't have to pay exorbitant costs.

5.How do you think libraries will change in the future?

It's hard to say but I am hopeful the computer technology can be more widely used in the future for people to access all the resources in the libraries.

Improvement

6. What kind of skills do you think library staff should have?

I think the library staff should always be very well informed as to where things are located in the libraries. This will enable them to help people to save time in finding what they need. The library staff should also be efficient because they have to classify different books into different categories. It's a complex work. They should also be very courteous as people who are using the library can often be under a lot pressure and often need a lot of help.

7.What can be done to make libraries more attractive?

By introducing more facilities such as computers to let people reading on line. And CD players that enable people to listen to some music or English CDs. And it would be better to put more green plants in the library to make the air fresh.

8.How has the Internet affected the popularity of the library?

Certainly the Internet provides easy access to sources of information in the library. And people can find the book, schedule the book in advance, renew the book through the book management systems connecting to the Internet, too. The internet saves people a lot time, which means a lot to the modern people.

======================================================================= Topic12 A Film

Describe a film that you have recently seen:

A film that I saw recently is called The Pursuit of Happyness. I saw it just at home and I'm afraid I'm not eloquent enough to describe just how much I loved this movie. I've seen this movie for 5 times.

The film is about a man named Chris Gardner. He is a bright and talented, but marginally employed salesman. With no money, Gardner himself and his 5-years-old son are evicted from the their San Francisco apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships, including living in shelters. But finally, Gardner pursuit his dream for a better life for him and his son.

The main character, Chris Gardner is performed by Will Smith, one of my favourite actors. He used to play in "I, robot","Hancock". These two movies are my favourites too! In this movie, you can hear amazing background music and watch natural performances. And this is a very perfect movie to cheer people up. I can still remember what Gardner tells his son: You wanna something, go and get it.

Films

1.What kinds of films are most popular in China?

Well those Hollywood blockbusters are popular in China. And some New Year's movies are welcomed in China, too. Chinese people love The Kung fu films, too. Because they originated here.

2.Do old people and young people like to watch the same kinds of films?

I am afraid not. Old people prefer to watch some historical films, war films and documentary films. Those films make them remember the old times. But the young people here in China like to watch love stories and some foreign films.

3.What do you think people can learn from watching films?

People can learn much from the film. Just like an old saying: a wise man learns from mistakes, but a wiser learns from others' mistakes. People sometimes can learn the true meaning of life from the characters in the movies. They learn to be optimistic from those motivational movies. They learn history of their country from those historical movies.

4.To what extent do you think films reflect real life?

Films immitate life to some extent. And most film directors put more attracitve scenarios into them. Film is just like a powerful medium and brings many parts of life to the public for observation.

5.Do you think that films stars deserve the large incomes that some of them receive? It's hard to say. Films stars just do their jobs as the ordinary people. But from the business aspect, their films attact thousands of people to watch and that brings a lot of money to the production group. The actors dedicate a lot to movies so I think they deserve a well-paid.

Censorship

6. What do you think about cencorship?

I believe in it. I think that some of the films that is available to the public is just pure garbage. I believe in the freedom of speech and having the right to say what you think, but I also believe that that also goes along with a sense of responsibility of who whould be around to hear it. So censorship is necessary for keeping a stable social environment.

7. Should films be classified before release?

Of course I think so. We all know some films contain the violent or sex episodes are not appropriate for children to watch. There should be a classification before release. But sometimes this way cannot stop teenagers to get the movies they are supposed not to watch. Since the Internet develops so fast, they can find almost everything they want on the Internet. The classification is just give a reference to the adults when they are picking up DVDs, but doesn't consider the children.

==================================================================

Topic13 An outdoor Activity

I enjoy climbing moutains. I've climbed several mountains, such as Fragrant Moutain in Beijing or Wu Yi moutain in FuJian and HuangShan Moutain in AnHui.

I usually go to climb in weekends or vocations. Warm but not windy day is my best choice. Because if it's too hot then I'll be sweating like a camel. Cold days is not appropriate for climbing, neither. Because letting the wind blowing on your face is not a good feeling.

One reason I enjoy climbing is it gives me an opportunity to release my stress in study. When I climb to the highest viewpoint of a mountain, I can breathe fresh air and feel the cool breeze which make me forget about those troubles. And the other reason is climbing can help me to keep fit. We usually have not much time to do exercise, so once the weather is nice, I'll go climbing.

Outdoor Activities

1.Would you say people spend more time outdoors today than they did, say, 20 years ago?

I'm afraid not. Now with so many conveniences at home, people prefer to stay indoor either watching TV or playing computer. Besides, most jobs require people to stay in offices. So they just don't have chance to go outdoors.

2.Are there any outdoor activities that many people used to do but which most people don't do now?

People here in China used to walk everyday. People still walk now, but not in the same proportion that they used to years go. Walking is a main souce of travel in the past, unless you could affor a donkey or a horse. But now, people can choose bus, subway and car to go wherever they need to go to.

3.What are the most popular outdoor activities in China?

I would say people like to play badmintons, table tennis and perform TaiChi outdoor. Some sports that are popular in other cultures are welcomed in China. Such as basketball, a lot of teenagers in China would like to go to basketball battlefield to play for a while after school.

4.Do old and young people like doing the same kinds of activities outdoors?

I'm afraid not. The old people prefer to walk or do TaiChi in centre parks. And when the weather is warm, you can see some elders playing Chinese chess on the street sides. However, the young people prefer to play basketball or badmintons outside.

Working Outdoors

5.What do you think are some of the differences between working outdoors, compared to say, working in an office?

If you always stay in office to work you'll get weak or sickness easier. But if you always work outdoors, you can breathe fresh air and let the sun pouring on you. These two things are important for keeping a healthier life. But as far as I am concerned, it would be better for a person to keep a balance between these two ways. Too much work outdoor may give you a feeling of unstable. And too much work indoors may make you feel boring.

6.Do people in China prefer to work indoors or outdoors?

They prefer to work indoors. It is generally accepted that if you work outdoors, your social status must be very low and your work is not that valuable. This might be true in some cases, but I don't think it's true with everyone.

7.If you had to choose an outdoors job, what would you choose to do?

I would like to choose a job such as salesman. It not only offers you an opportunity to keep a healthy body, but also let you interact with the customers directly. They will reject you, look down upon you, but make you become stronger.

Outdoor Environment

8.How do you think climate and the environment affect what activities people do outdoors?

Yes, of course. Because of polluted air, most people just don't want to do activities outdoors. Besides, if it's really cold then you cannot do some of the things that you can when it's hot. For example, you cannot play basketball because it cannot bounce that high as it does in warm days. But in hot days, you just cannot go to play snowboarding or sth.

9.Do you think the air quality in your hometown has improved or worsened in recent years?

The air quality was really bad in the nineteen nineties in Beijing. But things are getting better in recent years. Especially because of the Olympics, Beijing government has tried several ways to make air quality become better. Such as planting more trees, banning vehicles by even and odd numbered lisence runs on alternate days.

10. Do you think it will be easy for the goverment to solve environmental problems? It's not that hard. Goverment has power to execute the resolution. So once they set up a plan on environment, people will just follow it. The most difficult thing is the goverment should some investigation and research before they discuss the solution. They have to know what should be banned and what should be promoted, do the majority people agree on the regulation.

11.How do you think the environment in your hometown should be changed?

If we had more trees and plants around the city then the air would be a lot fresher. I am satisfied with restriction of the controling vehicles running on the road.

Topic14 Favorite Time of the Year

I absolutely love summer! Beijing's spring and autumn are windy, winter is very cold. Though the weather in summer is a little hot, I love it.

The summer in southern part of China is wet and is often accompanied with rain. But in Beijing, summer is the best part of the year. It rains, but the rainning time never keeps so long. Most of the days are sunny and make me feel happy.

Every summer, I'll go out for swimming with my friends. Swimming in the pool and letting the sunshine pouring on your body is so wonderful. You feel the cool and the hot together. After that, we will go to a tea house or a pub to have some chilled drinking. Besides, in summer, I like wear beautiful skirts or dresses, which cannot be accomplished in winter. Because you have wear like a ball in winter.

In summer here in Beijing, the sky is blue, the grass is green, every creature seems to be so vibrant.

Seasons

1.How do the different seasons affect the lifestyles of Chinese people?

Yeah, in the southern part of China, the weather is warmer and the difference between summer and winter is not huge as it in the northen cities in China, such as Beijing. So a lot of people in northern cities have to prepare different kinds of clothes for different seasons. And in the sourthern cities, people don't have centre-heating systems because they don't need them very often. They sometimes use air-conditioner to warm the house.

2.How do different seasons affect the way people feel?

No much I think. People will not feel so much different just because of the season changing. But some people do feel a little negative when the winter comes.

Weather/Climate

3. How does the climate of a place affect the kind of buildings that are built there? Well, if the climate is hot the the builder will construct the buildings to stay as cool as possible. But if the climate is cold, the designer should consider to make thicker walls to keep the buildings warm and to add centre-heating system to them.

4.Do you think fighting global climate change is a governmental responsibility or

the responsibility of individuals?

I would like to say that both of them have to be responsible for the global warming. The government have to set up some restrictions and standards to stop factories emitting too much waste liquid. The individuals should reduce time using the air-conditioner and the time driving cars.

Vacations/Holidays/Tourism

5.What are the major public holidays and festivals in China?

We have a lot of different holidays to celebrate. Spring Festival means a new year's coming. Mid-autumn Fesitival celebrates for the family reunion. And people eat rice dumplings in Dragon Boat Festival. We also have the Latern Festival and Grave Sweeping Day.

6.What do people in China do when they have holidays?

People in China usually spend the holidays with families and friends. They often go to restaurants together to have meals and talk about the recent lifes. In Spring Festival, people will also set off firecracker to welcome the New Year and let all the bad things go with the old year.

7.Why do Chinese people like the Spring Festival?

Chinese people like the Spring Festival because it's a big holiday for family. Chinese people regard family as the most important thing in their life, so after being busy for a whole year, everybody goes back to home to celebrate the Spring Festival together with his family.

8.How can people benefit from visiting new places?

The more comprehensive and extensive of your knowledge of other places and people, the more easier you will get along with different people. You will find more friends that are in common with you. With broad horizon, you will not be narrow-minded and negative.

9.When many people visit a particular place, what effects can that have on this place? They can make the place either become better or become worse. 150 years ago, a lot of people came to California to find gold and now, this place has become into a thriving and big city. But we also notice because of the over-tourism, some tourist attactions in China has been polluted and damaged. So it's hard to say what would happen if a place is visited by too many people.

Topic15 A Walk

Describe a walk you take regularly:

I often take a walk in the main pathway of Chinese University of Geosciences, where my home is located. I would like to take walk with my parents after dinner in summer.

This pathway is very beautiful. There are a lot of poplars planted on the two sides of the road. In summer night, you can feel the gentle breeze blowing on your face, and hear the little friction between the leaves. You can forget about the stress from the work and study. I can also see some college student playing basketball in the courts, which lie beside the main path. And I can see some young couples takes walks on this main road, too. It's really great to see people enjoying life.

I love the pathway because it gives me a lot of good memories for me to cherish and grow up with. When I was a child, my parents often took me to school on this road; And the night before my college entrance examination, mum accompanied with me to walk on this road, she told me just took easy.

All in all, I love this road and no matter where am I going to live I will remember all the happy time on this road.

Walking and Health

1.Do many people in China go for walks?

Yeah, lots of Chinese go for walks after dinner at night. Maybe because it feels good to get outside when they have been stuck inside all day.

2.How do you think walking is beneficial to health?

Walking does lots of things for your health. First is the physical benefit, perhaps it's the most obvious one. Walking helps reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, control body weight and so on. Second is walking helps reduce the anxiety and depression.

3.Do you think that playing sports is better for your health than walking?

I prefer walking. I admit the fact that they both improve your physical health. But walking is the nearest activity to perfect exercise. It costs no money and it can help you to keep fit in many aspects. And it can be done by all age groups of people. You know some sports such as basketball, are not appropriate for the old people to do.

Walk and Leisure

4.Do you think people in the past walked more than people today, or less?

Yes, of course. People in the past walked everyday. Unless they could afford a horse or a donkey. But now because of the convenient traffic transportation, people can choose several ways to go outside, by car, by bus or by subway.

5. What is the relationship between standard of living and the amount of walking people do?

It depends on how people value their time. The rich people or poor people often have to work very hard so they may not treasure the walking time very much. But for the

people who love life, they tend to spend appropriate time on walking to release their stress.

6. How do you think the government could encourage people to walk more?

By organizing some activities to encourage people to walk. They can also ask some celebrities to make advertisement and to talk about benefits of walking. The public like to imitate the living way of their role models.

7. Can you think of any examples where people walk a lot while doing their jobs? Salesman, I think. They have to go to different places to meet different customers. Sometimes they even have to go to abroad. They spend so much time on finding the address of their customers so I consider them spend a lot of time on walking. Other occupations are the same kind, such as waiters and waitresses, deliverymen and so on.

Topic 16 Sporting Events

Describe a sporting event that you enjoyed watching:

I would absolutely choose the Olympic Games. In Olympic Games, you can watch all kinds of popular sports. And you can cheer for your countries’ athletes.

It's not very easy to see the Olympic Games. Not only because it only be held one time in 4 years, but also because it is held in different countries. Watching a game in the real court is like dream. So I watch the games on the TV with my family. But since Beijing held the 2008 Olympic Games, it makes my dream come true. I watched the final course of Ping-Pong with my friends. Besides, I was also a volunteer of the Olympic Games, so it makes me be fond of this sport event.

I enjoy watching this event because I can see a lot of athletes of China there. They fight for the nation and win a lot rewards. It's the most exciting moment when I see our national flag rising with the music of our national anthem.

Sports in General

1.What are the benefits of sport?

Sport helps you to keep healthy. It can reduce the risk of getting heart diseases, lower the blood pressure, reduce body fat and help to control body weight. Besides, sport can give you a great opportunity to escape from the working world and reduce you stress.

2. What kinds of sports facilities exist in your community?

I live in a university, so there are a lot of sports facilities there. It has the football field, the weight room, the badminton court and the tennis courts. It also provides a large rehearsal room to do Yoga and Plataea.

3. Do men and women play the same kinds of sports?

Definitely no. Men tend to play games that are more exciting, more severe, and more aggressive, such as football, boxing, and basketball. However women prefer to play the peaceful sports like Yoga, badminton and swimming.

4. How do you think the government could encourage more people to exercise and participate in sport?

Government can encourage people to exercise by appealing ads on TV. They can also invite some celebrities to perform the ads and tell people the benefits of sport. You know people like to imitate the living way of their role models. Besides, the government could also organize some public activities to attract people to join.

5. Do you think children should be encouraged from a young age to participate in competitive sports?

They should be encouraged to join such activities but they must be protected by the adults. In these sports, they can learn to coorperate with their friends, they can also realize the severe cometition is all around them so they have to be independent and brave.

Live Sports Events

6.Do you prefer to watch sports events on TV at home or to watch them live?

I prefer watching sports on TV because I can watch them more clearly. If you want watch a sport event, the first thing you have to consider is buying a ticket which the position is in the front. And in the stadium, you cannot hear the professional anchors explaining the rules of the match or introduce the athletes' strategies. Sometimes you know little about a kind of sport, so you may want to listen to them.

7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of going to see a live sports event, such as a football match, compared to watching the event at home on TV?

The advantages of watching the event at home are obvious. You can watch more clearly, you can listen to the professional anchor explaining the rules of the game and introduce the athletes' strategies. The disadvantage is you cannot watch the whole games. There are always some ads on the TV. But watching a living sport event gives you an opportunity to see the real athletes and that make you feel exciting.

8. Does the ticket price to live sporting events affect decisions to attend? Yes. It's an extremely big deciding factor. Most of people don't have spare money to buy high-prices tickets allow them to seat in the front of the spectator area. At same time they don't want to buy tickets that only allow them to seat at the back. So they prefer to watch events at home. But if the tickets are very cheap, they will consider buying one.

9.What about the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing---What do you think would be a reasonable price for admission tickets?

Since we've already known the prices, most of us would agree that they are reasonable and can be affordable by most of people. The average price is around 100-200 RMB. It's really cheap for the people from US and Europe.

Topic17 Foreign Cultures

Describe a foreign culture that you are interested in:

I have spent most of my time on learning Chinese culture and I've already know so much about it. But I do interested in the Egyptian culture.

It's a mysterious culture which can be traced back to five thousand years ago. But the more mysterious it is, the more attractive it is! Egypt is a fascinating country with Pharoah, Sphinx and pyramids. It has its own language, as same as China. The first time that I became know about the Egyptian culture is by watching a famous movie ---The mummy. In this movie, all the main amazing things in Egyptian culture were showed. From then on, I read a lot of articles and watched some video clips about this countries. and I also watched the program of Discovery to know more about it.

Going to Egypt and seeing the real pyramids is one of my biggest dreams. I want to figure out the meaning of those wall painting, and want to learn its language. And I would also like have a walk along the Nile river side.

Learning about Other Culture

1.Do you think it's important to know about cultures?

Of course. The more extensive and comprehensive your knowledge becomes, the more easier you could get along well with the people from different places. Knowing cultures can make you not to be narrow-minded or negative. So learning sth about other countries are very important.

2.How can we benefit from learning about other cultures?

Q1

3.What do you think is the best way to learn about another culture?

Just go there and experience it. But since I'm afraid most of people wouldn't do so either because they have no spare money or because they have no spare time. So we can know more about another culture by reading materials and watching video clips about it. And we can also search its information on the Internet. It's much more convenient than traveling there.

4.Do you think that learning foreign languages can help us understand foreign cultures?

It just one deciding factor I think. I mean language cannot tell you all things about culture. For example, if you are just learning Chinese, you will never know why

Chinese do rice-dumping when they celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.

5. Do you think it's better to go overseas to study a foreign language or to study it in your home country?

It would be better if I had a chance to go overseas to study a foreign language. You can be engulfed in the language and be forced to encounter it outside of the classroom. But we have to consider, is it worthy for you to do so. I think learing another culture is more important than just studying language. In the end, language is just a tool.

Globalization

6. What is your understanding of the term "Globalization"?

In my mind, Globalization is the idea that the world is becoming smaller, so the societies can interact and exchange culture more easily and efficently. But unfortunately, some countries are just so strong and develop more fast than others so they tend to spread their culture more widely than other poor countries. The good thing is we have Internet, we can get anything we want to know about other countries.

7. Do you think globalization is a good thing?

Yes it is. The interaction and exchanging between societies can be more convenient and efficient. Besides, for those poor countries, it is a great opportunities to learn from those developed countries. Everything on technologies, industries and so on. And the trade barriers between different countries begin to decrease that makes people buy things they want more easily.

8.Do you think it's easier to learn about other cultures today than it was before? I certainly think so. In the past, all you can do is reading books and looking at the arts of other cultures. But now, with the Internet and technologies available, everybody can learn anything they want to know.

Topic18 Clothing and Fashion

Describe an item of clothing that you recently bought:

The last item I bought recently is a pale pink dress. Actually I've been away from those beautiful clothes for I about 5 months just because I've got a lot things to do. So I bought this beautiful dress in summer and I fell in love with it in a clothing market for the first sight.

It's a dress made by chiffon and it has a thin black belt. The special amazing point is the belt is made by elastic stap with a lot of little shining black metal piece. So this dress really impressed me and it's very suitable for joining parties or formal occasions. It has a reasonable price too. I want to have it. And you know what the coincidence is? I was taking the IBM summer internship at that time, and in the end

of internship, we would have a closing event. Everyone was required to wear an evening wear. So I wore it on the closing event and everyone saw me said: How beautiful the dress is! I am not girl who usually wear so formal dress so I think they must be surprised!

Buying Clothes

1.What type of clothes do you like?

I mostly like loose types of clothing because they are comfortable. And in summer I would like to wear dresses with high-heeled shoes. That makes me feel like a model!

2.How do people choose what style of clothing to buy?

It depends on their life style. If a person is a celebrity or a model. Then he or she should be always dressed so shining and make himself or herself attractive. If a person is a political or military leader, then he or she should always dress some formal clothes. But as a ordinary person, you can choose more freely.

3.Do you think the brand of clothing is important?

To some extent I think. Most of time if the clothing's brand name is very famous, it must have a very good quality. So if people have enough money, they would like to choose those clothes. But the brand is not that important, by careful choosing, you can always find a cloth that suit you very well and has a very good quality.

4.Why do some people buy brand-name clothes?

Some people buy the brand-name clothes because they want to show their social status. And some buy them maybe because they just want to show their artistic taste. And because most of the brand-name clothes are stylish, people want to buy them to make themselevs hop.

5.Compare the materials and fashions of today's clothing with those of the past? In my opinion, older fashion changed more slowly and gradually from one to another. But now the fashions of today change dramatically in very short periods. Besides, there are more materials used for clothing today. You can even see plastic or chocalate cloth.

6.Do men and women have the same shopping habits when they buy clothes?

No, men tend to buy clothes in a very fast speed. They sometimes forget to check the quality of the clothes. Once they are fit for them, they will buy it and they won't compare a cloth to another one. But women like to choose a lot of clothes and pick up one that they like best. They often try several times when buying clothes. And they consider the prices a lot.

7.Sometimes factory workers and very often school students have to wear uniforms. What do you think of this?

I think it's reasonable. When the worker and students don't have to think about how to keep up with other's clothes or style, they can be concentrate on work and study. But if the uniform is uncomfortable or stylish, it can reduce the spirits of the workers and students.

8.How much do overseas fashion trends influence China?

Mostly by the Internet and some fashion shows. There a lot of fashion shows appealing on the Internet or TV, so people can often see the lastest fashion style. And there are also some fashion programs tell people the fashion trend overseas.

9.Do you think it is good that people in China follow foreign fashion trends? It's not a bad thing. People in China know the fashion trends and they can mix the Chinese traditional style with the foreigh fashion style together very well. We know ZhangZiYi and GongLi, two famous Chinese actresses showed on the Oscars, wearing gorgeous dresses conbined by Chinese classical patterns and foreign fashion styles. They are following the foreign fashion trends, but they chose very appropriate dresses for themselves.

=======================================================================

Advertising plays a important part in out recent life. It?s just everywhere in the streets in the paper on TV and radio. As soon as we turn on the TVs, we can face the commercials pretty often.

There was an interesting advertisement for MacDonald?s which was shown on TV about 2 years ago. At the beginning of the advertisement, there were several children sitting in a classroom. A pretty girl who was their teacher wrote a number 3 on the blackboard. She looked at it for a while, and then she turned her head and looked at the number from another direction and smiled. The number looks like a big M and then all the children turned their heads and looked at the big M. Just then all the MacDonald?s food came out and the children enjoyed the food, cheered and laughed. The sound of laughing soon spread through the whole of the village where the school located. All the people in the village laughed and enjoyed the big Macs.

This advertisement was so lovely that I can?t forget so far. I like Macdonald?s too and I think it may be another reason why I can?t forget this advertisement. Actually, I like many MacDonald?s advertisements; they are all very interesting and can make me very happy. Every time when I eat or drink something in MacDonald?s, I like to watch the TVs there. Every advertisement on the TV makes me laugh and relaxed and feel comfortable. I think that?s why a lot of people like it.

I like all kinds of animals. I have two little dogs at home. They are really very cute and smart, and they always make me very happy. Although they can?t talk, I believe that they can understand human beings. Now, I?d like to introduce my favourite animal zebra.

Zebra is an extraordinary animal which lives on the plains of African savanna. It?s main food is grass. It?s interesting that the stripes on a zebra are just like the fingerprint on a human, each zebra has it?s own unique stripe pattern.

When a zebra is born, it?s pretty complicated because after the birth and when the baby zebra?s eyes open, their eyes can take in everything it sees.

The mother?s job is to shield the baby from seeing anything but herself. If the baby sees another zebra, it would see the other zebra?s stripe pattern, and it would think that the other zebra was it?s mother.

The father?s job is to ward off other zebras and any other animals that might harm the baby.

I think we should protect the wild animals, because they are friends of human beings.

BUILDINGS

In Beijing we have northern style of architecture. The houses here such as courtyards most look the same. Last year, when I went to shanghai , I was greatly impressed by one of the houses called yuyuan garden over there, with a history of more than 400 years. Now it is a park, but it was a family house of a rich official in ming dynasty. This house gave me a very great impression because it is different from Beijing . Northern and southern architectures are quite different. In the house, the walls are white and the roofs are black. The roofs are like this, and there are some decorations on the roofs. It has dragon-lined walls and woodcarvings on the windows. The atmosphere of peace, relaxation and comfort gave me a very nice feeling. I can guess in the past the people who lived there

Really enjoyed themselves with all these beautiful things around them, like pools with golden fish, very magnificent trees, which are over a hundred years old, and the furniture was made of tree roots, which is really expensive. I have never seen these kind of things in my life before. When I was sitting and relaxing in the house, I really have very bright feelings. I wish if I had a lot of

money, I would like to live in a house like that, but probably I won?t have so much money. But at least everyone should make something different in his house. Because every person has his own personality. If you live in a very simple and cheap house, you can also make it comfortable and relax yourself there, that every time you come from work, you can take a good rest, and the next day, start work again.

Digital camera

There are many electrical machines for me to use in my life, such as MP3, TV, computer, microwave oven and electrical dictionary. Among them my digital camera is very important for me. I like photography and my digital camera is very exciting. I find it to be more convenient than a normal manual camera. All I need to do is be sure my batteries are recharged and I can take as many as 400 pictures. If I am unhappy with a photo, I can delete it immediately. The best thing is that when I get home, I can have a look at all my photos and decide which are the best. I can crop them to cut out some parts of the picture that I don?t really like. There are many more benefits too. I can add special effects to the pictures like change the contrast or make it a black and white photo. Another great thing is that I don?t even need to scan the photo to send to my friends. I can add pictures to my email directly.

famous person / old person

I would like to say about one of the most famous singers in China. His name is Yang Hongji. During the last 30 years of his musical career, he has performed lots of beautiful songs and played in many operas with his stunning voice. Of course all my families like him very much. In fact, in his early years there was no one who knew him and no one wanted to notice him. He had been ignored for many years. But fortunately everything changed from 1995. That year, he sang the theme song to TV series: The stories of three kingdoms. He has put lots of his feelings into the song and of course this song made him succeed. His name became well-known for the whole country. After this, he appeared on TV and the stage frequently. And people began to be attracted by his mature, calm and his special voice. His voice has a mystery in it. Now, he is more than 60 years old. But he still continues his road in music. Though he is old, I think he is better than ever and I hope that he can bring us more and more beautiful songs.

Favorite communication method (11月13日考)

Nowadays there are many ways to communicate with others, such as sending emails, making telephone calls, sending short messages by mobile phone. Among them, face to face communication is my favorite way to communicate with others.

Some people believe that it is a fading phenomenon. These days, technological advances have successfully separated people from one another.

I like to see my friends face-to-face because you can get a greater understanding of meaning and nonverbal communication is easier to pick up by the other persons actions. Face to face communication is live and interactive, so you have got opportunities for feedback. You can tell when some one feels comfortable or uncomfortable and even if they might be lying or hiding some real meanings.

Also, in face-to-face communication we might hold our friends? hand, or hug to say goodbye. A boyfriend or girlfriend might even give the other a kiss. Besides, you can have face to face communication anywhere. So I like it most.

something you made

I like to do cross stitching, and I have made a lot of cross stitching works. My favorite work is a picture of a cartoon whale. I made it 3 years ago, and it took me a whole week to finish it.

For the preparation, I went to the shop to buy the graph of this picture, a needle, a piece of fabric and the floss.

The first step is to find the center of the graph and the center of the fabric. I began with the centre to make sure that after I?ve finished the picture, the whale is in the center of the fabric.

Each symbol on the graph represents an X on the fabric, and the different styles of symbols on the graph represent different colors of floss. So the second step is to choose one symbol on the graph to start. It is important that all the X cross are in the same direction. So I work a row of half

stitches and then work back to complete the Xs. When I have finish all the X of one symbol, I began to work on another.

The last step is to outline the picture.

I gave it to my best friend as a present of her birthday. She didn?t believe that it had been made by myself. She was happy to receive it.

I like to give my friends presents made by myself. I think they are priceless, because I really gave them from all my heart; they are a good part of me.

I met my best friend while I was in high school. We were in the same class and my seat was behind hers. She is a very lovely girl with an attractive face and big eyes. But for me her personality is the most attractive part of her. She is very humorous and interesting and fun to talk with. We chatted with each other very often and found out that we had lot of in common, so we became close friends soon. We had a lot of happy times together during the 3 years of high school.

Now we are in different universities, so we can not see each other every day. But we make telephone calls or sent short messages quite often. Every weekend, we meet each other, sometimes we go shopping, sometimes times we go to the karaoke because both of us like singing, and sometimes we go to the library to do some reading.

We have a lot of things to talk over. Sometimes we just do nothing at home, but I feel very comfortable just to stay with her.

I get along very well with her because we have a lot in common. We also support each other whenever any of us need help. And we are very honest with each other without any pretending. We can say things directly to each other. It is very important for good relationship. I will miss her a lot if I go overseas, but I think we can chat on line often, and feel as if we are still together.

I?d like to say about a piece of jewelry, which is my necklace. It?s not made of diamond, which it is too expensive for me, but my necklace is made of amethyst. I like amethyst very much. I think it is very mysterious and noble.

It is very important for me because my grandmother who has passed away last year gave it to me. And I was told the amethyst necklace had a history over 100 years. My grandmother also told me some stories of this necklace, and how her mother gave it to her. So it is very precious and I?m very proud that my grandmother passed it to me. Although it is not as shiny as a diamond necklace, all my friends say it is very unique and look nice on me.

I only wear it on special occasions when I attend formal ceremonies or parties. As many people pay attention to me, then I feel very of it and feel very exciting, and also very proud of my family. When some people in the party asked me where did you buy your unique necklace? I am always very proud to tell them that it was given by my grandmother and I wear it to keep good memories of her.

IDEAL JOB

I wish I could be an indoor rock climbing coach when I graduate from university, because it is my hobby. Now my major is accounting. It?s very for from rock climbing, as you know. But I believe when I am young I should do some exciting work to make my life colorful. I want to work in a gym, which has good facilities, because the rock climbing gyms are quiet, safe and comfortable. I can listen to the music while I am climbing.

I think this work is very exciting, because every day I can meet different people, who have the same hobby as me. And we can climb together, change our experience and make friends with each other.

I?ll hold classes for the beginners, because I think rock climbing is the best sports for both children and adults. It is a good way to keep fit, because you use all your muscles of you body. It?s not only good for your health, but also great for your confidence. It is a good sport to train the children?s self-confidence.

I believe that I well be a good coach, because I really love this sport, and I wish more and more people could to join it. And if I can do the work, which I really like, I will be very happy to do it and put a lot of effort in it and I will do it with my heart.

I like many kinds of physical exercises such as basketball, jogging, rowing, swimming, but my favourite is indoor rock climbing. I started to learn rock climbing last year. I think it is fun, and it is a very good to keep fit, because you use your muscles all over your body. And it is not only good for your health, but also great for your confidence. When I get to the top and look down, I feel like I achieved something that I can only get better and better. I really enjoy the feeling of accomplishment after finishing a difficult climb. If I have been climbing too much all my body was sore the next day, but I don?t mind as I know it is good for me!

Usually I go to the gym near my university, as it is very convenient, and I often meet friends when I am there. I go there about twice a week.

It is very good for me to do rock climbing, it is a good way to relax for me, when I do it, I can forget about many things that worried me, and get good relaxation. The next day I start my work again with a lot of energy.

The best present I have received is a cassette. It was given to me by my high school classmates and I consider it to be priceless.

In the first three years of my high school, my score grades were not good enough to go to university, so my parents sent me to a better school in another city. The first few days were very difficult, and the students there seemed to be interested in nothing except study. I felt very lonely, but nobody helped me. One day I received a parcel, and I opened it, there was only a cassette

inside, and I put it into a recorder. When I heart the sound, I could not believe my ears. That was a song that was sung by my former classmates. The meaning of the song was that they missed me very much, and say if I have problems, I shouldn't forget to turn to them for help. This was my most unforgettable moment in my life. The song touched my heart and I couldn't control my tears.

because of their encouragement, I made all my effort into study. When I feel sad and something upset me of bother me, the cassette would give me strength.

Until now, I keep the cassette as my precious object although it is too old to listen to. Whenever I recall this present, I get such a warm feeling.

学校

I?d like to tell you about my high school. It was quite big and it had a pretty quiet environment. There were four buildings. Two of them were used for teaching, and the others were used as accommodations for students and teachers. There were a lot of trees on campus and I liked reading under the trees. We had a laboratory and a library. Facilities in our school were advanced, and teachers were professional. But what attracted me most was harmonious atmosphere. Our classmates who came from different parts of the city were friendly and helpful. We helped each other in our study. Our teachers were quite kind and warm-heated. They helped us overcome the difficulties not only in study but also in life. In order to reduce our pressure, they often organized us to go outing. After we graduated from high school, most of us went into university. And until now, some of us still keep in touch with each other.

Sports events

Sports are popular in china now, more and more people like to watch and take part in different sports.

There are many sports events held in china these years, such as F1, NBA and china super football

league. To be honest, I don?t like to watch sports events, but there was one basketball league, which impressed me a lot.

It was the CUBA league. CUBA stands for china university basketball association, which was founded in 1985, and it did a lot of work in promoting the basketball sports on campus. In china, many famous universities put huge effort into succeeding in this league. During the 2001 season, CUBA activities enjoyed even greater popularity on campus. And I watched this game in that year, because my ex-boyfriend was a player of Nankai University in Tianjin. I went to Tianjin to see all his matches. Actually, I didn?t know much about basketball, even I couldn?t understand the match sometimes. However, the most thing impressed me is the strong will and team spirit of all the players. They put all their efforts and forgot all about injures and pains when they were playing. I think that?s the real meaning of sports.

In Beijing we have several ways of transportation. It?s very convenient to go anywhere you want. If you want to go far away, you can go by train, by plain or take a long distance bus. If you just want to go somewhere in the city, you can choose the car, the bicycle, the bus, the subway or the taxi. I want to introduce one of the very unusual means of transportation—rickshaw, which is still existing in china particularly in Beijing. It?s very comfortable and you can see the sceneries beside you. If there is a traffic jam, it?s very convenient to take the rickshaw. You can see many rickshaws at the back gate of Beihai Park. A lot of tourists take them for hutong tours, because it is very Chinese, traditional and unusual. It was the most common transportation in china about 100 years ago. Now the hutong tours have a history about 10 years, they have attracted lots of tourists from china and abroad and have made a big contribution to our tourism industry.

You can also see some rickshaws at some subway stations because there are too many traffic jams as the public transportation has not enough developed in some new built communities. One of my friend has an exciting experience of taking a rickshaw. One day he was late for school. When he got out the subway station, there was a terrible traffic jam; it is useless to take a taxi or bus, so he took a rickshaw. The old man was riding very slowly because my friend is a strong and a little heavy young man. So he asked the rider to sit at the back seat and he rode the rickshaw himself to school. He said it was the most exciting experience in his life.

When I have time I like to read the magazines, and my favorite magazine is called rayli, which is very popular in Asia. It was first published in Japan and now is has a Chinese version. I became

very fond of it when I went to university 3 years ago. And all my friends like it.

The cover of this magazine always has a beautiful model or a famous actress to catch your attention, inside it is full of stories and articles about the latest fashions and lifestyle issues. It also has some tips on how to do makeup and how to dress appropriately in different occasions. So it is very useful for girls who want to be attractive. And there is also a shopping list on the back page of the magazine; you can know where to buy the beautiful clothes which the models dressed in the magazine. Probably half of the magazine is taken up by adverts, and the printing and photography is very high quality.

It is published twice a month, sometimes I buy it myself, and sometimes I borrow it from my friend. I benefit a lot from this magazine. All of my friends say that I have a good taste on clothes.

下面这两篇还有上边的PRESENT那篇 是一起上王陆老师口语课 别的同学写的,感谢王陆老师的修改!!!

俱乐部

Well, I?d like to talk about clubs. Nowadays it is a fashion to take part in various clubs. I prefer mountaineering clubs. It is made up of the people who engage in mountain climbing. We know each other though the website of our club on the net. When a holiday is coming, we will organize our activity voluntarily. First we talk about the time, place, and the participants on the net. Then we will discuss the detail face to face in our bar “paradise of mountaineer.” When everything is ok, next, that is the exciting moment. We only know each other?s net name and club numbers, but we are really like brothers and sisters. For example, whoever is injured will be looked after. Everyone knows modern society is full of competition and struggle, and life is tough. I need some spiritual refreshments to make me go on. I?ve got it in this club. I forget all my worry and trouble.

Animal

I like koalas, which can be found in the eastern part of Australia. I remembered last year, my friend--Michael came to Beijing from Australia. And he brought some photos of koalas for me.

This is the first time I got to know koalas. Michael always said that koalas spend about 18 to 20 hours each day resting and sleeping, one to three hours eating and one to three hours moving. He believes that koalas are like me. The only difference is that koalas eat gum leaves, and you eat many kinds of food. I know this is just a joke. I have been interested in lovely koalas, and I will

always try to find out some materials about koalas from the internet. I believe it is my favourite animal because no animal better represents both the beauty and struggle of wildlife in the world than the koala. Some koalas can be harmless but they may give you a painful scratch with their sharp claws. I always see pictures of koalas. But now I hope I can see koalas in Australia. This day is coming. I decide to go to Australia to study next year. If the studying is the first reason for my choice to Australia. I know the second reason must be the lovely koalas.

下面是我总结的口语第三部分答案,主要是总结自《精选试题解析-口语》朗阁系列丛书 上海交大出版社

1.What do you think is the role of grandparents (old people) in a family?

In china, many grandparents take on the responsibility of primary caregiver for young babies. Many parents realize that the bond between grandparents and kids is rewarding for both generations. In today?s busy world, work demands make it difficult for parents to be as involved in their kids? lives as they would like. In these cases, grandparents and extended family offer the greatest help to parents.

In addition, grandparents are often regarded as the anchor that keeps extended family members together; they play a unique and memorable role in the family.

2.What is your opinion on one child policy?

It is no doubt that a policy like one child policy in china right now will bring many good effects. As each couple is only allowed to have one child, they will do the best they can to give their children good education and good living conditions. They will do a lot to make their own children to be the best. It is favorable for the children?s growth financially.

However, many people are worried about that today?s children are more spoiled than ever. Many of the children are self-centered and lack the ability to co-work with others even though they perform well individually. Children often have much pressure of being successful and do not allow themselves to fail. I believe that it is a problem cannot be ignored because a well functioning society is result of group work rather than a number of individual performances.

3.What do you think of extended family and nuclear family?

I think each family module has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages: In an extended family, older adult can care for and teaching young, so that they feel

they are useful and need.

As older adults are in this family, the whole family is more coherent- they help to keep the family relationship between the members.

In time of crisis, there will be more people to think about the solutions. And older adults might be more experienced in finding them.

While in a unclear family, people feel like they can enjoy greater mobility and privacy. And more resources from time to money can be devoted to each member of the family.

Disadvantages: On the other hand, an extended family may have financial problems as there are more people in it and they have to share the available resources.

4. Are single-parent families unfavorable for children?s growth?

To be sure, children in single parent families can?t get the due love or care from the other parent compared to other ones from regular families.

As there is only one parent to support the family there are often financial problems caused by low income and a lack of child-care support.

This result in the fact that children living in single-parent families tend to slip behind their classmates. More seriously, some children will isolate themselves from their classmates and friends.

However, I know of persons who grew up in single parent families turned out fine. Children from single parent families are more independent and more strong-minded.

5.What are the roles that public libraries play?

The public library is an independent learning center. The library supports individuals of any ages pursuing a program of learning independent of any formal education system.

The library provides the latest materials in a variety of formats for people, such as books, magazines, CDs, cassettes and videos.

Playgrounds and sports fields offer places where children and adults can play organized sports and informal games, which are good for health.

Wetlands, natural areas and vegetated parks help filter pollutants from the air and water and reduce noise pollution.

31.What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in cities and living in the countryside? Living in cities is often easier to find work, and there is usually choice of public transport, so you don?t need to own a car. Also, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. City life is full of bustle and variety and you need never feel bored.

However, living in the city is often very expensive. It is particularly difficult to find good, cheap accommodation. What is more, public transport is sometimes crowded and dirty, particularly in rush hour, and even the parks can become crowed on weekends.

cities because there are not so many cars and factories. Also, you can have a big house and a big yard around your house. You can keep pets, and your neighbors don?t complain as easily as in a city.

37.Do you think athletes deserve high salaries?

Maybe they are, but I don?t really believe that athletes are over paid. People don?t understand how the lifestyle of a professional athlete really is or who would get the money we spend if the athletes

didn?t get it. They just see those astronomical numbers and think that it is unfair that us working class people don?t make that amount of money. Professional athletes are some of the most dedicated, hardest working people in the world. They don?t just play during their season, they have to train year round or they will lose their job.

Fans pay to watch the game. Different broadcasting corporations pay the team to cover and air the game. All of this money goes to the owner of the particular team. The owners, in turn, then pay their players their salaries. The truth of the matter is that the owners actually make the most money and only distribute a small portion of it to their hard working employees. Athlete?s salaries must stay high to keep the level of competition where it is, and keep striving to get better.

题目: Environment issues finally belong to international cooperation and leadership. It is impossible for an individual state to conduct environment protection.

On the one hand, undoubtedly, multicultural communications have been contributing (benefiting) to education, economy, and scientific research. In terms of education, the gap between advanced countries and less developed counties can be well bridged. One of the most compelling examples is (take the fact that ……as a case in point /a case in point is that ……/for instance/for example) not few Chinese scholars and students further their education in American universities such as Harvard, Yale. As far as economy is concerned, international communications make possible sustainable development by cooperation, in energy preservation and environmental protection. Even from perspective of scientific research, international communications are absolutely indispensable, because today?s scientific activities have already not been limited by geographical or political boundaries. For instance, oceanological study frequently involves several countries. Obviously (hence/therefore/it follows that/it can be concluded that/accordingly/naturally ), international communications? advantages are self-evident.

On the other hand, international communications also exercise (exert) some negative (adverse/detrimental) influences (impacts/effects) on human beings. One of the most apparent is that some less well-known cultures might extinct. For example, some African languages and music have already been over looked.

In naturally follows the conclusion that although international communications show some flows, they cannot order mine civilization. By contrast, their contributions far eclipses their harmful and hurtful impacts, they are much more constructive than destructive.

动物保护

Animal protection is such a multidimensional issue that any absolute assertion is misleading. In my opinion, some animals that are at the edge of extinction should be well protected for the sake of sustainable development and ecosystem balance. But , a majority of animals should be consumed or killed by Man and nature.

Nature consumes some animals for its own sake, which seems to be still beyond human recognition. Nevertheless, on the basis of scientific experiments, it is accepted that an ecosystem is a “food-Net”. In such a net, if no animals are killed, the whole system will collapse. For instance, wolves live on other animals. It is clearly ridiculous that some “crusaders” claim that to kill animals is immoral. Is it immoral for a wolf to eat a fox? It if is immoral, we may ask: “……”

The answer is self-evident.

题目:Libraries should only have books. It wastes money for them to have such High-Tech media as DVD, computer software and video.

The term “ waste” can be defined as an activity or behavior that necessitates a certain sum of (volume) capital, human and natural resources, and so on (the like), but the effects are empty (unsatisfied) have not met the goals. The ultimate goals……

In this sense (from this perspective/according to this understanding/bearing this in mind, I hold……), it is everything but a “money-waste” for libraries to have such High-Tech media as DVD computer software and video. This concept is firmly (solidly/on the strength of ) based on the following facts, figures, and compelling evidence. The argument of this view goes as the followings.

The fist reason is that such high-tech media as DVD computer software and video save people?s time when they are digging information in public libraries for various purpose. That is to say, (put it to another way/precisely ) the media in public libraries enhance( accelerate/ make ) reading more efficient and effective. For instance, using the traditional English- Chinese dictionary to look for the meaning of an English word costs, on average, approximately 2 minutes, whereas using an electronic dictionary to perform the same task costs only 0.01 second. This evidence clearly follows the conclusion that public libraries can benefit readers by utilizing (employing). So it is not a waste of money for them to have ……

The second reason, at least similarly convincing, is that these media can also dramatically reduce (decline/decrease/drop) the costs of managing and operating, public libraries. It is well known that in cities, space occupation for the sake of costs. But the state-of-the-art media such as DVD demands little space. For example, a DVD can be equal to almost 100 traditional books in contents, but occupies only 1% of the space one book needs. Accordingly, the media waste nothing. In this case, can it be called a “waste” for libraries to have ……?

Certainly, even in terms of human resources, it is economical, effective, and reasonable for public libraries to have …… This is self-evident. It is entirely presumptuous to say that media waste money.

题目:Governments control violence in films or on TV programs so that the crime can be decreased.

What are the reasons of the increase in the rate of crimes? The majority of the average people attribute the increase to the violence in films and on TV programs. Scholars, however, generally deny such an assertion. These scholars, in my opinion, are just.

To begin with, there does not exist a cause-effect relationship between watching violent programs and committing crimes. Precisely, that criminals harm victims is not because …… The motivations to commit crimes are so intricate that legal experts still know few. In fact, it is a logical fallacy (drawback/flaw) to argue that violence in films or on TV program causes crimes. Next, to censor the TV or film actually goes against the freedom of speech and thus undermines the very basis of democracy. In addition, to eradicate violence on TV or in films virtually hamper the economic development. Why? Two reasons shed light. One is that …… The other is that…… 题目:Education

A phenomenon that an increasingly larger number of undergraduate students find it hard to be employed provokes a discussion over the functions of higher education. Although it is almost self-evident that a college or university education background helps an individual in employment

markets, universities should server various other functions.

Among them, the most vital are spreading and creating knowledge, shaping and reflecting individuals? moral and ethic values, and contributing directly or indirectly to human civilization construction.

Not only can universities spread social and natural knowledge, but also create such knowledge. Natural science varies from biology, geology, and psychology, where as social science includes history…… In fact it is such universities as Harvard, MIT, and Cambridge that have been forging and transmitted such knowledge, otherwise, the world today would be still in its dark ages. For instance,……

Besides, compared with secondary education, higher education plays a more critical role in build individuals? moral foundation. Why? The reason is that college or university campus is characterized by multicultural communications. Beeing subject to such campus culture, no body is able to survive without a noble moral value.

In addition, universities and colleges are actually one indispensable element or social productivity. That is to say university professors or students conduct various experiments that boost social economic development. For instance……

Clearly, all the above-mentioned are the main functions of higher education, but the main functions are not limited to these. In fact, these are only part of their functions.
