With the fantastic spur both in industry and in economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is on the rise. Some people have bought cars of their own, and others are planning to buy cars. But there have been two quite different views on this phenomenon.

Some claim that there are many advantages brought about by cars. First, the automobile industry provides jobs for countless workers and strong support for other industries. Second, if conditions permit, owning a car can make us work more efficiently. Finally, life will become more convenient. A car allows one to move freely and with a car there is no need to wait for the bus in the cold or under the burning sun.

However, others strongly object to the increase in developing private cars. They hold that automobiles will give rise to a series of problems. In the first place, as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. Next, private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that the advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams. The last problem is the increasing number of car accidents that have killed and will kill a lot of people in a friction of a second.

In my opinion, although automobiles have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of our society, they also bring us numerous troubles such as more serious environmental pollution, more traffic accidents and more angry consumption. They drink up huge amounts of fuel and throw out huge amounts of pollutants. Traffic accidents kill thousands and thousands of people each year and cripple more. Jams waste our precious time. Therefore I am against developing private cars.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you are young.

When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.

A person should never make an important decision alone, important decisions should be well thought out. People, who know you well, know what is best for you, and close to you can give you good advice, give you a different perspective, or share their own experience.

When I had difficulty deciding which classes to take in college, I talked to my teachers and advisors; they had the knowledge and expertise to help me determine which classes were the best ones to take for my future career. Without their advice, I might have chosen unsuitable courses. In collage, I had convinced myself that I was not good enough to act in the school play. Therefore, I decided not to audition even though drama had always been my passion. The day of the audition, a friend of mine asked me why I was not auditioning. When I told her I did not feel I was good enough, she was shocked. She was able to provide me with another perspective on myself and my talents. I rethought my decision and tried out….and got a lead in the play.

Last year when I was trying to decide whether or not I should study overseas, I talked to my friend. This was the best thing I could have done. This was a big decision for me because I had never been overseas on my own and I was not sure if I could do it. She had studied overseas the previous year. She told me about the challenges and opportunities I might encounter and helped me make the right decision. I went and it was amazing.

Whenever I am faced with an important decision, I seek advice from others so that I am well-informed and have the benefit of their perspective and experience.

“微博作业”: 好还是不好?

The freshmen of Media Department in Nanjing University recently received a rather alternative assignment: They are each to open a Twitter account, and are to be graded at the end of the semester according to the number of followers they get. This unique task has aroused wide public concerns as well as split opinions. What is your view on this? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:

The Twitter Assignment: Good or Bad?

The Twitter Assignment: Good or Bad?

The freshmen of Media Department in Nanjing University were assigned with a quite unique task: the students are each to open a Twitter account, and by the end of the semester, they will be graded according to the number of “followers”, i.e. fans they get. If a student wants to pass this course, he or she needs at least 500 followers; to get a “Good”, one needs 2,000 followers; and to squeeze in the “Outstanding” league, one must earn 3,000 followers and more. This “Twitter Assignment”

was soon tweet around, and has since turned into a public debate. On the purposes of this experiment and its outcomes, people have different views. Some netizens praised it was “brilliant”, and commented “Twitter is a great personal media for students to practice their ability to promote.”

However, there are also a lot of skeptics of the assignment. The idea that students are graded by how many followers they get on Twitter is particularly challenged. It is generally believed that the number of fans is nothing but one simple indicator of the overall quality, and not a scientific approach to assess. Since there is already an overload of useless information on the Internet, some worry that it might usher another platform for gossiping, or boring detailed personal information, thus breeding a group of narcissists who think that they need to share every bit of their life to the grain. What's more, in order to attract the eyeballs, students may tweet exaggerated or even false information, blurring the lines between what is real news and what are convincing untruths. Since fact-checking is integral to the integrity of news sources, when the media starts relying on Twitter, however, those who factcheck will be left behind and feel it a disadvantage.

Seen from my point of view, the Twitter assignment is a revolutionary teaching experiment. Twitter uses new resources to provide fast information. Students get an alternative approach for acquiring information, as they could get touch with many celebrities on Twitter, and tweeting is a best way to dig deep and get scoops. Students also become familiar with basic editing procedures by tweeting. There are endless possibilities to use Twitter in creating and publishing. However, it needs more guidance for students and more regulation on their posting behaviors, for instance, adopting a more appropriate and reasonable grading system taking account of factors including popularity, subject and originality of content, time-sensitiveness, response rate and forwarding rate.
