作业:The Portrait of Dorian Gray

The Portrait of Dorian Gray is written by English writer Oscar Wilde who was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856. Wilde has various and rich talents of literature. He is a critic, poet, novelist and most successfully a dramatist. He is the representative of Aestheticism in the 19th century in Britain. And his most famous and important opinion is “Art for Art’s Sake”.

The plot of this novel is not easy, because the hero Dorian Gray has experienced a lot of changes of his characteristic. Dorian Gray was a very good-looking and pure young man and his charm gave inspirations to his painter friend, Basil Hallward. Basil was deeply touched by Dorian and he painted a portrait for him. The portrait was extremely fine and Basil didn’t even want it to be exhibited. But just before the portrait was finished, Dorian met Lord Henry Wotton who was a sophisticated dandy at Basil’s home. Henry tried his best to influence Dorian. He told Dorian all kinds of negative thoughts, which made Dorian, feel strange but admirable to Henry. Then Dorian became good friends with Henry but not Basil. They spent a lot of time together. A month later, Dorian fall in love with an actress named Sibyl Vane. Sibyl was 17 years old and very pretty and innocent. She loved Dorian even deeper than Dorian loved her. One night, Dorian invited Henry and Basil to the theatre to watch the performance of Sibyl. But Sibyl acted badly because she suddenly realized that the lines were unreal but the love she had for Dorian was true and more important. She thought that Dorian would understand her but Dorian scolded her strictly and said that he didn’t want to see her any more. Dorian went home and slept for a long time. But the news came the next day that Sibyl was dead—she killed herself. Meanwhile Dorian discovered changes on his portrait. The image of a pure young man looked a bit cruel. He suffered a lot of pressure but soon came back to peace due to Henry’s “comfort” and “guidance”. Dorian then locked the portrait in a small room in case someone saw it. He continued to get influence from Henry.

Time went by quickly, but Dorian still looked so young and he led a colorful and cozy life. Then there came the painter Basil who had heard more and more rumors about Dorian. Basil felt sorry and sad for Dorian and wanted to lead Dorian back onto the right way. Dorian, however, stabbed Basil to death. Then Dorian threatened a chemist to help destroy the body of Basil. The chemist suffered greatly and committed suicide in the end. Another man James who was the brother of Sibyl returned from abroad and determined to kill Dorian. However, when the two of them met each other, Dorian denied the truth. He pointed to his young face and told James that he was too young to love his sister. James believed his words for Dorian seemed to be only 20 years old. But later James realized his mistake and continued to murder Dorian. Unfortunately, James was killed by accident.

Dorian now thought him completely safe because all those who knew his evil things were dead. He wanted to start life afresh but Henry didn’t believe it. Dorian thought that it might bring some good changes to his portrait if he started to do good things. Then he went to see his portrait again. To his horror, the face was even worse and looked hypocritical and there’s blood dripping from the hand. He was full of hate and seized a knife to ruin the picture. When the picture was stabbed, Dorian fell onto the floor. When he came to himself, the amazing thing happened: the man in the portrait was young and pure again, but the real Dorian became old and withered.

So that’s all the changes of Dorian Gray, which are directly related to Lord Henry. Henry is some kind of clever and speaks like a philosopher, but turned out to be the evilest one. He showed no respect for all women and thought Dorian some poisonous theories to spot him.

is the key person of Dorian’s tragedy.

I think this novel is well-written because the characters are described very detailed in fine words. I find that the author is very good at using English. For example:

“She is all the great heroines of the world in one.”

“When poverty creeps in at the door, love flies in through the window.”

“She cried musically.”

“She danced out of the door.”

“It seemed to me that all my life had been narrowed to one perfect point of rose-colored joy.”

“While she danced, as a plant sways in the water. The curves of her throat were the curves of a white lily. Her hands seemed to be made of cool ivory.”

Besides, there are lots of conversations and most of them are long and complicated, which makes me hard to get the real intention of the speaker. And this is what I don’t feel comfortable while reading.

I have also looked up to some reference books to find some useful information so that I can understand the story better. According to some critical opinions, “like Dorian’s portrait, the novel has aged badly…Wilde, however, had very little talent for fiction: the plotting is heavy-handed, the characters one-dimensional.” Or “as a period piece, The Portrait of Dorian Gray, like the Sherlock Holmes stories, paints the fog-muffled streets, the dandies, and the languor of London in the 1890’s. The atmosphere of the book is still entrancing even if the basic plot has less impact today.” I don’t know whether they are right, but I’ll try to understand.
