PERSONAL STATEMENT

Contemplating the last fifteen years of my academic journey, I feel very confident in dealing with the complex nature of different subjects. In addition, I find subjects related to finance extremely interesting, such as the techniques for risk shifting in firms and societies. I am writing this essay to indicate to you unequivocally my intention to specialize in Quantitative Finance.

I’m currently a senior student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from HUST, which is ranking in the top 10 universities nationwide. Prodded by my parents’ high expectations, I have studied diligently over the years, drawing constant inspiration from the learning spirit prevalent on the campus of this university. Studying industriously, I had an overall GPA of 3.8, which is in the top 1% of our department. I was honored as “Excellent Student” by HUST in 2007 and 2008. In addition, I received “National Scholarship” （China’s top honor for undergraduates） for two consecutive years. Besides, I chose economics as my second degree in Wuhan University (also ranked in the top 10) and took a number of economics-related courses, such as micro-economics, macro-economics, statistics and portfolio investment. To broaden my vision, I have also audited, by special arrangement for the gifted students, graduate courses like Stochastic Processes, Fixed Income Securities and Financial Report Form Analysis.

In the process of preparing myself for advanced research, I obtained a solid academic background in mathematics, computer science and basic economic theory to meet the rigor of this demanding program. To be more specific, my academic records in math-related subjects, C programming language, MATLAB and Statistics are unexceptionably in a high level, especially for the full mark in my statistics course.

Thanks to my reputation as both a distinguished student and Director of Foreign Liaison Department, I interned as an analyst in Asset Management Group in Agricultural Bank of China during my summer vacation. I assisted in developing new financial products and ameliorating existing pricing and risk management models for derivatives, provided support for structured products trading desk, built a volatility estimate model, made commendable analysis based on the model, developed a credit risk management application, presented investment analysis reports based on customer investigation, and developed models to forecast targeted customers’ financial performance. I realized that various risks have emerged on the Chinese financial market in recent year. Nevertheless, as my study deepens, I am clearly aware that China lags far behind the developed countries in the West in Quantitative Finance. It is therefore imperative to expedite the growth and amelioration of China's Quantitative Finance and to borrow from the advanced theories and managerial concepts from the West.

Those helped me crystallize my goal to become a financial expert and enhanced my desire to pursue an advanced degree program in United Kingdom where I can acquire the most systematic and the most advanced financial knowledge from the most prestigious university in the area.

In the future, I see myself as a financial engineer, developing structured finance pricing and risk models at a hedge fund or investment bank. To achieve this I would like to gain exposure to the latest practices adopted in the field of Quantitative Finance. I would want to work with a leading investment bank or in the treasury of a commercial bank, which would enable me to help corporations manage their risks. I would like to probe into the possibility of developing some economic and financial models, which best fit in with China’s circumstances, based on a critical analysis of western models and thorough practices to facilitate the development of China’s financial system. My ultimate plan is to act as a messenger in the exchanges between financial profession of China and that of the world and to make my contributions to the globalization of China's finance.

I am applying for overseas graduate study because of the fact that your institution holds the leading position in the research of my chosen field. Your institution, known for its highly structured program and careful and exacting work ethic, is the university I have long admired. My career goal is to seek a challenging role in the financial industry in which I can make use of my quantitative and analytical skills. The program I have selected would without doubt prove to be a vital step towards this aim.
