Many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction, because the environment that they are living in has changed greatly. For example, with

the developmet of cities, the using of insecticide and serious pollution, their living areas have become narrowcr and narrower. Many of the wild animals, now are confronted with food crisis. At the same time, man is killing off species just for getting their fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat.

In order to protect our resources of ecology, people should realize that the loss of any species is at least the loss of source of knowledge and a source of natural beauty. Animals Need Protecting

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers,

for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more.Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice, with no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or planton the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

Net Bar

With the development of the Internet, the net bar plays an important role in people's life. My father used to talk to me about his five siblings. He used to

say that I was unfortunate that I had none. And I used to envy him and wonder how nice it would be to have a house ful of brothers and sisters. They are afraid that the stresses and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally. In fact， however， stress isn't the bad thing it is often supposed to be. Unless it gets out of control， a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and challenge， and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless， idle life. People under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth——the very aim of a human life.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. What we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.

The Truths about Pigs

People have many wrong ideas about pigs. They think pigs are foolish, dirty and fat. In fact, the more we know about pigs, the more we know that we are wrong.

1. Clean pigs

Pigs do not have sweat glands (汗腺) and can’t sweat, so pigs cool themselves in water or mud during hot weather. They also use mud as a form of sunscreen (防晒剂) to protect their skin from hot sunlight. Besides, mud also protects pigs against flies and parasites (寄生虫).

Their muddy (沾满烂泥的) appearance makes them look dirty. In fact, pigs are one of the cleanest animals. If they have the choice, they prefer to cool themselves down in fresh water. In the wild, pigs often build their toilets away from their sleeping and eating areas.

2. Smart pigs

Pigs are the fourth most intelligent animals. (Humans are the first, other primates [灵长类] are the second and dolphins/whales are the third). With such brains, pigs can learn quickly.

Like dogs, they can be trained to learn tricks. Pigs can walk on tightropes (走钢丝) and jump through hoops (圈). They have a long memory and remember many things and they can solve problems such as opening a bolted door (插上门闩的门).

Unlike dogs, pigs compete cleverly with others. To avoid fighting, a pig will wait until nobody is around to eat up the hidden food.

T o farmers, pigs are goods. To truffle harvesters (收割块菌者), pigs are excellent hunters — they can find these expensive fungi (真菌) easily. To scientists, pigs are one of the only large mammals that exist in every part of the world.

3. Lean pigs

Pigs are lean (少脂肪的) in nature, if humans don’t feed them too much. Pigs spend most of their day eating, but unlike dogs or humans, they never dangerously overeat (吃过多) even when they have lots of food.

4. Friendly Pigs

Pigs have strong bonds (密切联系) with other members of their group. When they are 3 weeks old, piglets begin to play with each other. During this time they form friendships which often last for the rest of their lives. Before giving birth, the mother pig collects branches (树枝) and soft material to build a nest. After giving birth, she will stay with her babies for a long time. She even sings to her piglets!

My Life

Ona cold afternoon, I was sitting by the fire wondering what Pokey was doing.

My name is Snickers. I’m a golden retriever① living with my third master. My friend Pokey, a beagle②, was on his third master, too. He bit someone because he wanted to protect his house. His master got angry and sent him to the pound③.

He was more than 100 miles away. Without Pokey I was like a tree without leaves. In the past when I felt bad, he would tell me jokes or run in circles...

“Snickers! Get over here,” my master shouted. I ran over to him at once. “We’re going out there,” he said. We would have to hunt in a storm. Well, I would do anything to make him happy. I didn’t think it was nice killing animals, but I had to help him.

My master killed three birds and was pleased. When we got back, he fried the birds, and I went to my favorite spot, in front of the fireplace (壁炉). He offered me some meat, but I wanted to eat nothing.

When I woke up the next morning, something outside the window caught my attention. I pushed (推) the curtains open with my nose. The ground was covered with thick, white snow! Pokey and I used to stick (伸) out our noses in the snow and see whose hole was deeper. I ran out.

Then I remembered nobody would be there to play with. I walked back. My master finally woke up. I jumped on him to say good morning. “Get off me, you stupid dog,” he yelled (大叫). I could see he wasn’t feeling good and I had to stay out of his way. He made breakfast for himself, but forgot to feed me. I pushed my food bowl over to him, but he did nothing. I went outside and searched through the trash (垃圾), trying to find something to eat. No luck there.

I went back inside to get some food. I saw a piece of sausage (香肠) on my master’s plate. He wasn’t in the kitchen, so I thought he was finished. But just as I was grabbing (抓) it, he walked in. He took the piece out of my mouth and hit me.

He tied (绑) me to a tree. He said if I ever did anything like that again, he would send me to the pound. So I lay down and just waited.

Suddenly I saw a man in black jump over the fence (围栏). If my master knew him, he wouldn’t be jumping over the fence. I barked, but he wasn’t scared (害怕). Then he took something out of his pocket and worked on the door. Soon, the door was opened... (这个故事将怎样结尾？欢迎发表你的评论)

Talking About Wishes

Usually, when we talk about our wishes, we say: "I have a great wish, and I'll work hard to realize it" and so on. At first, I was also trying to find my wish in this way, but I had so many wishes and they are changing

all the time.

When I was a little girl, I was made by my mother to learn to play the piano. At that moment my wish was to be a famous pi-ano player. When I began to learn Chinese painting, I wished I could be an artist. In this way, my wishes had once been a scien-tist, a translator, an actress-, and so on, but they all went away just as soon as they came.

Till now I haven't got an idea of what my wish really is, and I don't want to think about it. Because many people have some great wishes, they can't carry them out or they don't work hard for them. At last their wishes became visionary.

No matter what I will be in the future, a very important thing to do now is to work hard and lay a solid foundation for my future life. I must try to learn more and to be an intelligent per-son.

In modern society, if we want to be successful, we must have not only knowledge, but also high EQ. As we know, some students can study very well, but they don't have a healthy personal-ity. I suppose some of you have ever heard about a student who could study very well, but committed suicide because of a small failure in the examination. So, no matter how clever we are?no matter how great our wishes are, without a healthy personality we can't be a real person of integrity and talent.

Maybe I've no fixed wish at this moment, but I'm sure I will work hard so that I can have high EQ to realize my "wish "in the future and reach the goals of life.

This is my biggest wish forever.

My experience of learning English

广东省深圳市宝安区新安中学 初三（6）班 何思思

When I was at primary school, I was not interested in English at all. At that time, my English was very poor. When I became a middle school student, my mother got back from Australia. She asked me to watch English movies and TV programs, listen to English songs and practise speaking English with her.

Now, I do one unit of the reading exercises in Pep Up Your English by the People's Education Press every day. Although I have just graduated from junior middle school, I have finished the books for Senior One students and now I am working on the books for Senior Two. The reading materials are quite new and cover a lot of fields, so I like the set of books very much. I think the books have helped me to improve my reading comprehesion a lot. Thanks to Pep Up Your English, I got the standard score 807 in English in the first model examination of Baoan District and A+ in the Shenzhen Senior High School Entrance examination.

I had some problems while I was learning English. I was good at spoken English, but poor in written English. I used to make mistakes in spelling. Then, I learned seven words by heart every day by going over them five times within a day——early in the morning, after lunch, after school, after dinner, before going to bed. As a result, I don't often make mistakes now. Besides, my grammar was poor, so when I had time, I would read my grammar book now and then. Although it was boring to me, after thinking

of the goodness it would bring, I didn't feel bored any longer.
