  Section A: Composition写作文
  Section B: Note-writing
  a)作文。
The Advantage and Disadvantage of TV这个文章题目时,如果不知如何下笔,可以去联想一些具体的电视节目。
但是不知道这两个词或对于它们的拼写没有把握时,可用 其近义词表示,如“10年”直接用ten years就可以,“增加”还可用increase, go up, ri se, grow, jump, climb等。 如在每一篇作文中都会用到的一个单词“认为”, 英文中有很多单词来表达此义,如think, agree, claim, maintain, argue, believe, h old, suggest, view…as, regard…as, consider…(as)。又如另一个单词“目前,最近” ,可用nowadays, these years, recently, lately, currently, at present。
Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus(大学生该如何走出校园了解世界),提纲的第二点要求是大学生了解社会的途径( 大众媒体、社会服务等)。

可以用一系列表示逻辑关系的连词,即路标 词来表示思路的清晰,如and, however, furthermore,also, what's more等。此外,还可 以用对等的句式结构,如for one thing, for another; On the one hand, on the other hand等来增加文章的层次感。

Saving money or spending tomorrow’s today money

Money is to our life what blood is to our body. In the world today, nobody could live without money. According to a recent survey conducted by one authoritative information corporation, an estimated 67% of college students in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, and est. think saving money is a good habit. On the contrary, the rest are convinced that spending tomorrow’s money is better. As far as I am concerned, saving money best suits me and renders me the greatest enjoyment.

Admittedly, spending tomorrow’s money, as advocated by many, has its active role to play in our economic life. It can spur people to make more money to enjoy life. And consumerism brought about by this trend can of course do a great deal to drive forward our economy.

However, there are numerous merits for saving money. First things first, saving money is a preparation for a secured life. The best way to secure a safe and sound life and be free from poverty, want and anxiety about future is, of course, in current situation, to have a certain amount of money in hand. In our daily life, various things unexpected and emergent may fall upon us. In these cases, if we have savings, we can manage to overcome these crises more easily. In addition, money dissipating and luxurious life can weaken us. By contrast, just as Albert Einstein put it, “a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.”

By and large, why so many people advocate spending tomorrow’s money and so many exclaim the dogma is beyond my understanding. It seems that it can bring us nothing but anxiety and more uncertainty about our life, while saving for the rainy day, a fine tradition of Chinese nationality, can provide us with the greatest security and the best satisfaction of life.

Topic 1 Do Examinations Exert a Negative Influence on Students?

Examinations used to be considered as a useful toolfor teachers to judge the learning progressof the students and see if any subject should be re-taughtor explained differently.Useful as the tool is,complaints among students and the society about examinationsare still quite common. Many people ask,“Do examinations exert a negative influence on students?”In my point of view, the answer is yes.

As the saying goes that every coin has two sides, examinations are no exception.Besides their advantages, examinations also exert a negative influence on students. On the one hand, examinations restrict students’ knowledge learning and competence building.Because lots of things, such as school admission, employment, certificate acquisition etc.,are determined by examination results,it’s no wonder thatstudents have to attach great importance to examinations.Under such circumstances, examinations do not motivate students to read widelyand seek knowledge but restrict their readingbecause what has to be learntis rigidly laid down by a syllabus. They do not motivate students to build their competencebut induce cramming just for higher test scores. On the other hand, examinations affect teachers’ teaching, which directly influences students.Teachers are often judged by their students’ examination scores. As a result, they make great effortsto train their students in exam techniquesrather than transmitting knowledge and fostering talents.

In conclusion, the negative influence of examinations on studentsdoes exist and can’t be neglected.

Topic 2Are Test Scores So Important?

In a number of schools, students are promoted, retained and denied graduation based on test scores. Some people even predict that higher scores of students today will translate into better working performance tomorrow. It seems that test scores can be used as a weighing tool to judge many things. But are they so important? I’m afraid the answer is definitely no.

It is true that tests are often one requirement for admission at many schools; and when admission officers scratch their heads making decisions, sometimes a test score is the only criterion on which decisions can be made. I admit that test scores are important to some purpose in school admission. However, they bear no relation to a person’s success or failure. First, some students secure high scores at the cost of extracurricular activities, social practice and physical exercises. They are only good at tests. Second, some students get high test scores by cheating on exams. In this case, the scores mean to no purpose that they are better than those who get lower scores. Furthermore, many people who score high in tests do not necessarily do well in practical work. Job success doesn’t involve taking tests. Successful people work well with groups and have other qualities such as perseverance, motivation, enthusiasm, and emotional intelligence.

2 / 22

All in all, test scores measure only a portion of knowledge and analytical skills but nothing at all about success or failure. In some sense test scores are important, but life means more.

Topic 3Cheating in the Exams As the total number of people taking various examinations in China reaches millions, cheating in the exams has grown to be a serious problem. Some people may find many excuses and reasons for cheating, but I don’t see any worth of that.

First, the punishment is severe. In all the cheating cases, a record of the offence and the penalty imposed will be ordered to be held on the student’s personal file in the academic department and will seriously affect the nature of any reference issued to potential employers or other educational institutions.

Second, no matter what reasons you cheat for, they can’t change the nature of cheating, which is immoral. Cheating in the exams makes no difference from pick pocketing. Maybe some students cheat for being not willing to disappoint their parents, but in fact they’ve disappointed them more deeply for their dishonesty. Fellow students also have no sympathy for those who are punished for cheating. Those who have succeeded in cheating can feel subsequent shame and loss of confidence because they have not given themselves a fair test of their ability and end up cheating themselves.

To sum up, exams are set for measuring talent and evaluating qualifications, which should be a fair play. However, cheating destroys the justice of examinations. For the sake of a more transparent and honest exam environment so as to guarantee the legal rights of exam-takers and protect the credibility of examinations, we must clear out the conduct of cheating in exams.

Topic 4Laptop — A Necessity for College Students?

In recent years, more and more students at collegeand universities are using laptops. Still more students are asking their parents for one. However, is it a necessity for their study? I don’t think so.

On the one hand, it is safe to say that a laptop is of great help to some students’ study. This is especially true so far as the hard working students are concerned. With the enrollment ever growing at colleges and universities, the school resources available to the students are quite limited. In this case, having a laptop is no doubt convenient for their study. With a laptop, they can get access to the Internet, searching for academic information, learning foreign languages and working on their graduate papers. As for these students, one can even assume that they can equally do well in their study without a laptop. On the other hand, there are a lot of students whose laptops are used in quite a different way. Some use it to play computer games and watch movies on the Internet, and still others even use it to gamble. Instead of helping them with their study, the laptops are a waste of money and time. To these students, a laptop is a luxury. It spoils them rather than benefits them.

In conclusion, we can say that for some students, a laptop is of some help to their study rather than a necessity, while for others it is absolutely unnecessary.

Topic 5Do Grades Stimulate Students to Learn? For years, when people talk about education in China, students are often criticized for studying only for grades. But some other people hold the opinion that grades encourage students to learn. In my opinion, grades do encourage students to learn. My reasons are as follows.

First of all, we have to make it clear that the idea that grades encourage students to learn isn’t identical to the one that students study for grades. The truth is whatever students are learning and whether they are really learning it well, they will undoubtedly achieve high grades. So grades are not what students are studying for, but a measurement for parents and teachers to know students’ performance in their academic study. Secondly, grades stimulate students to learn because they will study hard to achieve high grades. Afterwards, no matter what grades they have got, they know that they have done well or worked hard enough in their studies. If they are not satisfied, they will study even harder and try to do much better in the future. Lastly, some people may say grades give students too much pressure. I would say that it’s not grades but what they are learning and whether they are learning it well or not that give them the pressure. As I said previously, if they are devoted to what they are learning, it is very likely that they will achieve high grades.

In conclusion, grades can stimulate students to learn. High grades make students obtain a sense of fulfillment while low grades give them encouragement and stimulus. Grades help students know their advantages and disadvantages in their academic studies, which is very helpful for their future academic development.

Topic 6University Classes, Required or Optional?

Nowadays, with more and more young people having opportunities to attend colleges and universities, there have been drastic changes in various aspects of university education. One of the hot issues is whether university students should be required to attend classes. In my opinion, they shouldn’t. University students should have their own options about whether they will attend classes or not.

First of all, by the time people started their university life, they would be mature enough to be responsible for their own decisions and behavior. They are no longer children and should be capable of determining whether or not they need to attend a given class. Secondly, the university life is more than academic study. Students are exposed to many new opportunities, which will make them grasp more practical social skills for their future. It is very important that they have the freedom to decide how to manage their time and to which they should give priority. Moreover, missing classes doesn’t necessarily mean they miss crucial information; generally this can be made up for by referring to notes of other people, though some courses, which need practical work, such as field trips and experiments, are exceptional. Last but not least, mandating student attendance is an unnecessary burden on professors, who are there to teach those who want to learn, but not to babysit.

In a nutshell, university students are sensible adults, who can decide whether the classes are

4 / 22

worth attending, especially those more self-directed courses. University courses should be optional for students rather than required.

Topic 7My View on Bedtime Chat in College Dorms Many college students stay up very late at night chatting in bed. They chat on various subjects, such as study, love, society and future. Sometimes their chat goes on and on and seems to lead nowhere. Views on this common phenomenon in college life vary from person to person. To my way of thinking, bedtime chat is beneficial for students.

First of all, bedtime chat is good for freshmen at college. Students from all over the country are naturally curious about each other. Bedtime chat seems to be a good answer to their curiosity. Through a good bedtime chat, students in the same dorm would soon learn about each other’s likes and dislikes, which can result in a better understanding among roommates. Secondly, it is inevitable to chat on study in bed.Bedtime chat helps with academic development in that it makes up for what each has missed in their daytime lessons. Thirdly, bedtime chat helps broaden students’ horizon. This is especially true when the roommates are of a diverse set in terms of culture and geography. Different customs reflecting a different culture and different sceneries representing their respective geographical conditions are referred to and shared in their chat, which is not only enjoyable but also beneficial. However, one can never neglect the fact that a bedtime chat carried on for too long will eat much into their time for sleep and affect study the following day.

In a word, I firmly believe that bedtime chat in dorms at college has much more advantages than disadvantages only if it doesn’t go on for too long.

Topic 8The Best Way to Keep a Harmonious Relationship in Dormitory

When we mention the phrase “dormitory life”, a vision of wild parties and loud music probably pops into our mind. It is true that dormitory relationship can easily run into trouble, confusion and tension for all kinds of reasons. But is there anything we can do to solve this problem? For me, the best way is communication.

Communication is vital to any relationship, especially to dormitory relationship. Students sharing the same dorm come from different family backgrounds and thus have different life styles, habits and characters. Without communication, misunderstanding will be frequent and unavoidable. In the practice of communication, roommates should, first of all, share openly their expectations on issues, such as cleanliness, visitation, music, study time and lights out, before they have problems and get out of control. Once common understanding has been reached, we get the guide for our everyday conducts. Furthermore, it may be necessary to make adjustments as new issues may constantly arise in the future life. Therefore, continuous communication is by all means necessary for us to avoid possible misunderstanding or conflicts.

In conclusion, we may be able to enjoy a harmonious dormitory relationship by means of communication, and in this case the dormitory may become our second sweet home away from home.

Topic 9My View on a Minor at College In order to be more competitive in their future career, many college students choose to work on a minor besides a major. This is quite demanding in that they have to work much harder than those who choose to concentrate on their major only. However, I think it is quite rewarding to have a minor on the side. You may argue that it is only sensible to concentrate on one’s major and work hard in quest of excellence.

It is true for students who have a low level of aptitude and are doing poorly in their own major. To them, a minor would only mean a distraction and affect their performance in their major. But considering the severe employment situation in the present job market, walking with two legs is always better. The reason for this is quite obvious. If a student works solely on a major, he or she is confined to the same field of learning for a career. But if a student could manage to work on a minor on the side, it would definitely make a difference. Despite the extra work required of the minor, those who choose to have a minor could have one more chance for his or her employment compared to those who don’t choose one, for they can not only learn more but also can be more competitive in their future hunting for jobs.

In conclusion, a minor for college studentsis demanding but rewarding so far as the factor of future employment is concerned.

Topic 10The Importance of Social Skills Among all the important skills of human beings, social skills are regarded as the most important. In an information age, communication with others in all walks of life plays an important role. No wonder that many students are deliberately working on their social skills. Common sense has told us that those who have successful love affairs usually possess excellent social skills. They are good at promoting an easy-going relation with their partners, which naturally result in a romantic affair. The same is true for family life. Good social skills are essential to keep family member on good terms with each other, bringing about a happy family life. Secondly, statistics show that one’s career success depends heavily on his or her social skills. Professional skills are necessary, but without good social skills, a good teamwork is hardly imaginable, which would undoubtedly hinder the full play of professional skills. Examples are not rarely seen from people who are talented and have reached high level of academic development, but have finally come to nothing due to their poor social skills.

In conclusion, if we are to lead a happy life and succeed in career we must improve ourselves in such social skills as the skill in communicating on a feeling level, the skill in developing and using interpersonal relations and so on.

Topic 11Is It Worthwhile to Do Business at College? College days are important stage. It is important for college students to spend this period of 6 / 22

time on academic development. However, many students are doing business in their leisure time. Opinions on this phenomenon differ from person to person. Some people think it is something worthwhile to do. Others hold that for college students only the academic work is worthwhile. I am in favor of the former.Doing business at college has got more advantages than disadvantages. The first reason is that by doing business at college, students can earn some money to pay for their study. This is sometimes very important in that it could be of great help to their parents. Secondly, doing business is a good social practice. What they have learned in class should be put into practice before it becomes useful knowledge. Those who have gained some experience at college in the field of business will prove more competitive in getting employed after graduation. Of course, one cannot ignore the fact that doing business is quite risky sometimes. If you are a green hand, you may lose money instead of making profits. Moreover, it takes a lot of time and energy. A good balance between academic work and business is vital, for at college the first priorityis always academic development for all.

From the above mentioned points, we can conclude that doing business at college is worthwhile only if one can keep a good balance between study and business.

Topic 12The Main Influence of Economic Crisison College Students

Currently, the economic crisis is severely affecting college students in many aspects. For example, some students have to make decisions about where, and even whether, they will go to further their education as their families watch drastic income shrink. As far as I’m concerned, the main influence of economic crisis on college students is that it makes obtaining employment even more difficult.

Once there was a time when graduating from a university was a cause for celebration. College education used to be considered as a guarantee for good income, a decent work place and a passport to big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. But things have changed now. With today’s economic crisis, students face difficulties entering the workforce. It’s an anxious time for many. Many students getting ready to enter the job market say that they’re scared. Many companies, particularly international big names, have cut employees due to overseas problems in stock markets. Thousands of factories, which used to manufacture shoes, clothes or toys for export, have been closed or are struggling for survival as their foreign orders were declined. All of these not only mean there are more unemployed people, but also fewer opportunities for first-time job seekers. Consequently, nowadays students not only lower their salary expectations but also consider working in rural instead of urban areas.

In sum, college students are feeling the economic crisis shockwave in the job market, which has become a pressing problem confronting them.

Topic 13Is a Good Preparation Helpful for a Job Interview?

Employment in China is getting more and more competitive these years. This is especially true as far as the college graduates are concerned. The financial crisis that started last year has made the situation even worse. In this context, a good preparation will be definitely helpful for

7 / 22

one to succeed in a job interview. A good preparation helps greatly with a job interview.

In the first place, an interviewee should be properly dressed and appear neat and tidy. Such appearance will surely impress the interviewer in a positive way, since it suggests organization and dignity. A more important preparation might be a sound knowledge of one’s target position. The more you understand the position, the better you are likely to fulfill your duties as required, which is perhaps the employer’s greatest concern. Therefore, before going for a job interview, an interviewee is advised to know as much about the position as possible. In doing so, preliminary ideas could be formed as to whether you are the right person to fill the shoes. Last but not least, it is absolutely necessary to study the skills for self-advertising. More often than not, people who are talented for the job may not necessarily possess equal talent to make their talents known. The employer would be most likely to assume that a person with good skills for self-advertising could be equally capable of advertising for his products.

From the above reasoning, we could conclude that a good preparation will definitely increase the chance of success in a job interview.

Topic 14Is Shanzhai Culture Healthy? “Shanzhai” first became a name for fakes after Shanzhai cell phones’ popularity in the market. Now it has been given a broader meaning of fake, unprofessional or homemade, and a slang for anything that steals ideas or styles from already well-known stuff. Some believe that “Shanzhai” has become a culture of its own and it represents non-mainstream ideas and innovations. However, from my viewpoint, it is not a healthy culture but piracy.

Shanzhai comes from copying and plagiarizing and often infringes on intellectual property (IP) rights. For example, imitated electronics, including cell phones, MP3s and even laptops, are the most common “Shanzhai” products. Despite the possible infringement of IP rights, they are much liked by many people as a good way to spend less. However, consumers’ interests should not be at the expense of legitimate IP right holders. IP right laws are there to protect the interests of patent, copyright and trademark holders for a limited period of time. They are devised not only to reward innovators, but also to encourage further creativity. If illegal Shanzhai is not held accountable, society is rewarding copycats while punishing innovators. The result could be disastrous: Everyone will choose to copy others. The market will be flooded with the same kind of poorly-designed and badly-made products that have short lives and lack after-sale services.

From the above discussion, we can see clearly that Shanzhai culture is not a healthy one. It violates IP rights and undermines market competition order under the disguise of grassroots culture.

Topic 15One Way to Fight against Global Epidemics Nowadays, new infectious diseases are emerging and spreading faster than ever before. Global epidemics have become a serious threat to human health and lives. Worldwide discussions about how to fight against them are ongoing actively. In my opinion, one effective way is to take concrete monitoring and quarantining measures.

8 / 22

For one thing, new diseases are emerging at a historically unprecedented rate. Vulnerability is universal. Governments worldwide must keep watch for new threats like the emergence of SARS, new types of bird flu and Mexican swine flu. For another, due to the global boom in air travel, it makes it possible for even just one individual traveling between countries, carrying an infectious disease, to be a threat to others and to cause an alarm or a potential crisis in another country. The WHO also warned that an outbreak of an epidemic in one part of the world now is only a few hours away from becoming an imminent threat somewhere else.Infectious diseases are now spreading geographically much faster than at any time in history.

Thus government health authorities around the world should improve their monitoring of infectious diseases, report outbreaks as soon as they happen and carry out quarantining measures strictly.Only by effective monitoring and quarantining measures can we fight against the increasingly serious threat of global epidemics. Don’t wait till winter comes. Now it is time to prevent the worse from happening.

Topic 16Is It Better for Children to Grow up in the Countryside?

Nowadays with the development of economy and technology, youngsters in big cities are faced with more temptations. Some of them can’t resist the temptations and commit crimes. So the issue whether children should grow up in the countryside or in the big city has been widely debated. It is important because it concerns the development of our future generations. From my point of view,I agree to the idea that children should grow up in the big city.

To begin with, big cities are always the political, economic and cultural centers, which undoubtedly provide a better environment for children to grow up. Thus, they can get in touch with people of different cultures and races. Moreover, children have more chances of obtaining better education and enjoying better social welfare. Schools in big cities often offer more experienced and knowledgeable teachers and better learning environment, compared with those in the countryside. Furthermore, big cities provide children with more career opportunities when they grow up. Years of schooling in big cities can prepare children well for employment in the society. But for those who grow up in the countryside, there is obviously a discrepancy between what they acquire at school and what they will probably use in society.

It’s true that children growing up in big cities are exposed to more temptations, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they cannot resist these temptations. There are various means — education, for example, of making them learn and know what they should do and what they shouldn’t. What’s more, living in the countryside cannot guarantee that they would not get bad influences. Therefore, I think it is better for children to grow up in big cities.

Topic 17Is It Necessary to Attend Training Classes? Recently there has been a sharp increase in the number of training classes of various functions. Opinions on whether it is necessary to attend these classes vary from person to person. Some don’t feel it is a worthwhile investment. However, from my perspective it is necessary for all practical purposes.

9 / 22

First, our job duties have changed and they just require training to be a necessity. These days, even the least skilled jobs require the employees to have some degree of knowledge, which wasn’t expected in lower level positions a few years ago. Technology, language ability and other skills, are becoming important factors in every possible position, requiring every workerto gain a sense of how to use them. This is why the need for training comes into play for most people. Second, by attending training classes, we can develop friendship, acquire knowledge and learn skills more efficiently. The training class is a perfect social intercourse arena, where you can encounter teachers, friends, partners, and even rivals. With the help from experienced teachers, together with the newly-built friendship, the cooperation and competition with fellow classmates, training classes will definitely make your learning more efficient and interesting.

Topic 18My View on the Nationwide Fever of Learning English

In recent years, especially since China’s entry into the WTO, a “fever” of learning English is sweeping over the whole country. The learners are of different ages. Besides, for years, the language has become compulsory for students at different levels, from primary schools to institutions of higher learning. Some people think it is nothing but a fashion. As far as I am concerned, I think it is the trend of the times, rather than a fashion.

First of all, people learn English for different purposes. It seems that students have to learn English because it is a compulsory subject in the syllabus, and because they are required to pass various English examinations, such as CET-4, CET-6, TEM-4, etc., in order to gain diplomas and academic degrees. But the truth is that a skillful mastery of the language at school can also provide them with a chance of getting better employment. It has become a basic skill needed for various jobs and a practical tool for social communication. More and more people are learning English for practical use rather than taking examinations or just following the fashion. The fact that people’s purposes of learning English are diversified shows that the English language has become a social skill.

All in all, I think that learning English nowadays is not a fashion but a trend, a trend that people should not follow blindly, but with clear and specific purposes. If it is a “fever”, this fever will set up a new standard as for how the learning of English is perceived.

Topic 19One Way to Avoid Telephone and Email Fraud

While many types of fraud exist at present, telephone and email frauds are two inexpensive and popular methods for criminals distributing deceitful messages to potential victims. A great many of the people’s possessions are lost annually and the losses continue to escalate. How can we protect ourselves from telephone and email fraud? In my opinion, one way to avoid that is to protect our personal information and never let it leak out.

Most frauds are carried out by criminals trying to obtain access to our personal information such as account numbers and passwords. For example, you may receive a fake email saying that

10 / 22

In short, due to the above-mentioned reasons, we can conclude that it’s necessary and worthwhile for us to attend training classes.

you have won the lottery or got a lucky number, or you get a phone call or email asking you to call a given number to cancel an expensive service you did not subscribe to. In such cases, we must be very careful and do not trust any unknown sources asking for personal information, by email or by phone. Never respond to them. You won’t receive any riches, and in fact you may get into legal trouble if you get involved in one of these scams.

On the whole, we must beware of the tricks of telephone and email fraud. Criminals are usually after our private information. They want to trick us into giving away private information either by calling them or handing it over online. Therefore, look before you leap and keep your personal information safe.

Topic 20The Importance of Food Safety Control After the exposure of Sanlu melamine milk powder crisis, the issue of food safety was brought into public focus and is arousing more and more people’s concerns. It cannot be denied that food safety control is very important.

First, from the perspective of health, it’s important to control food safety. As an old proverb goes, we are what we eat. Our nutritional status, health, physical and mental faculties depend on the food we eat and how we eat it. Access to good quality food has been man’s main endeavor from the earliest days of human existence. Safety of food is a basic requirement of food quality, which directly influences our health and life safety.Second, from the perspective of economic development, controlling food quality makes economic sense. The value of world food trade is increasing every year, thanks to the development of science and technology. Scientific development also allows a better understanding of the nutritional qualities of food and its health implications. This has led consumers to become more discriminating in food matters and to demand protection from inferior quality and unsafe food. Therefore, food safety control is necessary and important in building up consumers’ trust and confidence, thus benefiting the economy.

In one word, food safety control is important to the health and life safety of the general public and the sound economic development as well.

Topic 21Are We to Resume May Day Golden Week?

The first May Day Golden Week started in the year 2000 and was reduced to a three-day holiday a couple of years ago. This policy has given rise to a heated discussion. Some propose that we should resume May Day Golden Week, while others would like to stick to a three-day rest. I think that it is a good idea to resume it.

In the first place, it is a good chance for teachers and students at school to get relaxed both physically and mentally. After hard work for a couple of months, a good rest is badly needed for better academic performance. No wonder that a resumption of May Day Golden Week is welcome at colleges and universities. Moreover, the whole community seems to suggest that the May Day Golden Week be resumed. Everyone needs a break in work after shopping or traveling. It is obvious that such resumption will be a sure stimulation of consumption, which will

11 / 22

eventually help with employment in some way. However, whether we are to resume it or not depends heavily on the government’s reaction to the public appeal. On the one hand, an immediate resumption of the Golden Week after it was cancelled just one year ago might harm the seriousness and persistence of the state policy. On the other hand, it is only right for the policy-makers to conform to the public opinions and do what is right for the general public.

From the above analysis,it is quite likely that the May Day Golden Week be resumed very soon.

Topic 22Is Internet-based Means a Good Supplement for Communication?

Ever since the invention of Internet, some softwares for communication have been put into use one after another. Such softwares as QQ and MSN are Internet-based and constitute a supplement to conventional communication means. Yet, they can cause problems, too. In my opinion, these Internet chatting tools are neutral by nature, be it QQ or MSN.

According to my knowledge, many students at college use them to communicate with teachers and schoolmates for academic purposes. With these tools, they could keep in touch with their teachers, friends, and even family members, share useful information related to their lessons and solve academic problems sometimes. For these students, such Internet-based means not only promote interpersonal communication but also help with their study. On the contrary, just as a coin has both head and tail, these Internet-based means have their problems, too, if not properly used. Some students spend a lot of time chatting with too many people through QQ or MSN, depriving themselves of precious time for study and rest. Still others, though not large in number, use QQ or MSN to spread harmful materials such as pornography, spoiling themselves and their cyber friends as well.

To sum up, whether or not such Internet-based means as QQ or MSN could serve as a convenience for interpersonal communication and help with academic work depends totally on users themselves.

Topic 23What Has Modern Technology Brought Us?

Nowadays science and technology is developing so rapidly that people can hardly catch up with its pace. While some people are enjoying whatever modern technology has brought us, there are others who stand against it. As for me, modern technology surely has both its advantages and disadvantages, but generally speaking, it has brought us more benefits than drawbacks.

Firstly, there is no denying the fact that modern technology has made life more convenient and more comfortable. The most obvious example should be the worldwide applied modern technology — the Internet. It provides us with a fast and convenient way of communication, obtaining information and entertainment, which was previously unimaginable. Secondly, with new technology, we can do work more efficiently. The computer and other technological devices can save our time and energy. Thirdly, new technological innovations in medicine in recent years have greatly reduced the rate of infant mortality and prolonged our life expectancy. Finally, some

12 / 22

people criticize that new technology has taken away jobs from people since machines have taken place of human labor, but we should also realize that new jobs are coming up because of new technology.

All in all, everything has its advantages and disadvantages, and modern technology is no exception. But the most powerful aspect of technology lies in its unbounded potential to solve the problems that come alongside its well-intended purposes. In my point of view, modern technology is improving our life rather than degrading it.

Topic 24A Major Advantage/Disadvantage of the Information Age

As everyone knows, the information age has brought us countless benefits, but when it comes to its major advantage, people may hold different views. As for me, the major advantage of the Information Age is that it makes it easy for individuals to have instant access to all kinds of information.

In the past, for instance, if a student was meant to compose a thesis, he was supposed to bury himself in piles of books in the library, and probably after several days’ or even several months’ searching, he still could not find the materials he wanted. But now it is a totally different story. The advanced techniques of the information age have spared us all those troubles. What we need to do is just sit in front of the computer and search for our target information on the Internet rather than struggle painfully in numerous books. More excitingly, we don’t have to waste several days or even months waiting. Usually the information we need will be transferred to us in seconds. The information age can not only bring convenience to students in searching of materials, but also help people in all walks of life, save their energy and enhance their efficiency. Now since we’re in an economy based around the manipulation of information, I have every reason to believethat this advantage of the information age will play an even greater role in the future.

Topic 25Is a Live Performance Always More Entertaining? It is quite a controversial issue whether attending a live performance is more entertaining and enjoyable than watching the same event on TV. There are a lot of individual factors involved since each of us has different traits in personality. As far as I am concerned, attending a live performance isn’t always more entertaining.

First of all, while we can’t deny that a live performance is more exciting for most of the time, there are other factors that can make the exciting occasion less entertaining. For example, we have to pay very high prices for tickets, and the weather can be very bad, especially for an event like a football match. Moreover, the crowd can get so crazy under the influence of the atmosphere at the scene that people’s lives are endangered. It can turn out to be a disaster rather than an entertainment. Conversely, watching TV can prevent all these things listed above from happening. We don’t have to pay any money for tickets, and we can sit on the sofa drinking coffee or tea, and enjoy the performance comfortably and peacefully. This is especially true of a sports event. But of course there are certain events that don’t involve all the factors mentioned

13 / 22

above, such as a concert, or a play. In this case, attending a live performance is surely an exciting and unforgettable experience.

All in all, attending a live performance isn’t always more entertaining than watching the same event on TV. It depends on what kind of live performance it is and our own traits of character can affect the choice as well.

Topic 26Mass Media and the Intrusion of Privacy

In recent years, due to the growth of mass media and technological innovations, people seem to have less and less privacy. The case is worse for famous people such as public figures and celebrities. The mass media is frequently criticized for their excessive attention to the personal lives of famous people. As far as I am concerned, what the mass media does is nothing but an intrusion of privacy.

First of all, every citizen is entitled to a private life free from media intrusion, and celebrities and public figures are no exception. If a person is engaged in corruption, law-breaking, abuse of power or hypocrisy, the media has a right to uncover them, but not an individual’s private life. Furthermore, an individual is protected by Right of Privacy from emotional harm such as embarrassment and humiliation, especially publicly. For most of the time, mass media deliberately hunts for novelty in order to draw the public’s attention. Moreover, when the privacy of a celebrity is exposed, it is not just he or she who is harmed; many other people are dragged in.

A harmonious family can be destroyed. If children are involved, the harm is immeasurable.

All in all, most of us need a basic human right to lead our lives without harassment or hindrance from anyone else. It is not only immoral, but also illegal to intrude an individual’s seclusion or solitude, physically or mentally.

Topic 27Human Communication — Face-to-Face Is Better? The issue whether face-to-face communication is better than any other communication means is quite controversial. While modern ways of communication such as telephone calls or email can be fast and convenient, fact-to-face communication has its own advantages. Personally speaking, I don’t think face-to-face communication is better than any other ways of communication.

First of all, face-to-face communication is usually effective because people meet and see each other, apart from the information exchanged verbally, things like their facial expressions and body movements also help them understand each other, and so there is the least chance for a misunderstanding to occur. But we have to admit that this way of communication is overwhelmingly restricted by time and space, since quite often we will have to communicate with people who are far away or tied up at the moment. On the other hand, telephone calls, email, or text message under such circumstances become efficient means of communication. We can call people if they are far away, and we can email them if they are tied up for the time being. Furthermore, making telephone calls is also a way of immediate communication except that we can’t see the person. Nowadays there are also various real-time chat tools through the Internet

14 / 22

available. Video and audio online communication can function equally like face-to-face communication.

In a nutshell, I don’t think face-to-face communication is better than any other communication means in the fast-paced world. With the fast development of science and technology, I am positive that there will be more efficient and effective ways of communication in the future.

Topic 28The Importance of Self-confidence

From the quiet confident doctor whose advice we rely on, to the star-quality confidence of an inspiring speaker, self-confident people have qualities that everyone admires. Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives.

First, it is impossible to do anything for real if you’re not self-confident. Most people are reluctant to back a project which is being taken by someone who is nervous, unsure and overly apologetic. On the other hand, people might be persuaded by someone who speaks clearly, who holds his or her head high, and who answers questions assuredly. In today’s world, self-confidence is a basis for our survival, both at work and at home. Self-confidence brings acceptance, love, peace and energy. And all of these in turn make our confidence grow even more.Second, self-confident people inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. Oftentimes even a single self-confident person can change the attitudes of all the people in a room. Sometimes it seems as if the world itself decided to help such a man. A confident person attracts friendship and respect. Spreading confidence to others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success.

All other things being equal, self-confidence is so important that it is often the single ingredient that distinguishes a successful person from those who are less successful. Whether you are working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well worth the effort!

Topic 29Can Wealth Bring Happiness?

Wealth and happiness always have countless ties. On the one hand, wealth can satisfy our material desires and therefore sometimes meet our spiritual needs. On the other hand, wealth can also bury our heads in the sand and bring misfortune to us at times. It’s really hard to answer the age-old question “Can wealth bring happiness?” In my point of view, I don’t agree that wealth can bring happiness. I conceive of the two as not absolutely related.

Happiness is not something that can be measured by wealth, but by the state of mind. For one thing, we all know that the world’s wealth has soared during the twentieth century, and economists expect it to continue rising in the decades ahead. Does that mean that we humans are happier than our ancestors? I’m afraid the answer must be “no” or “it depends”. Whether we are happy or not is determined by our state of mind. Wealth can buy us some material things but cannot free us from sadness or worries. For another, wealth cannot bring happiness, neither can poverty. It’s a mistake to assume that wealth will affect everyone in the same way. Being rich or

15 / 22

poor, people make choices about how they treat wealth, and those choices can boost happiness or undermine happiness.

All in all, the amount of wealth doesn’t represent the degree of happiness. Happiness can’t be weighed by wealth. It has no absolute relation to wealth, but as a kind of feeling in our hearts it only rests with our own mind.

Topic 30The Best Way to Reduce Stress

Stress is hard to escape in today’s fast-paced world. It has become a big challenge because our lives are getting faster and we haven’t learned how to cope with it, and because the sources of stress are many. Since there is no cure-all for us to deal with stresses and strains of our daily life, every one of us is trying in our own ways to reduce stress. As for me, the best way to reduce stress is exercise.

Firstly, according to medical research, when we exercise, our brains release certain chemical substances which bring feelings of happiness and relaxation. Secondly, physical exercise benefits both our mind and our body. While stress is mental, the symptoms of stress are mostly physical, such as skin problems, high blood pressure, fatigue, insomnia and frustration, etc. Physical exercise not only helps us reduce stress, but also keeps us fit. Consequently, a fit person is most probably a happy one. Last but not least, physical exercise in this case doesn’t consume too much time. Physical exercise for the purpose of reducing stress shouldn’t be too violent and fierce. We can engage ourselves in some regular exercise such as walking, jogging, dancing or swimming on a daily basis.

There are many helpful ways to reduce stress and, as I mentioned above, none of them is panacea for all. We should find our own ways and incorporate them in our daily life routine to prevent stress and reduce its effect on the body. For me, it’s a 30-munite jogging every day.

Topic 31Optimism Helps to Increase Your Hope

Modern life can be sometimes very stressful. One may get overwhelmed by what’s going on. There is a feeling of helplessness and the world’s spinning out of control. It’s easy to lose hope. Actually hope is something we create with an optimistic state of mind. Optimism helps to increase hope for several reasons.

To begin with, hope is not something that magically appears from an outside source. We each have within us the capacity to generate hope. This capacity is closely related to optimism. Optimism helps overcome fear and in turn, allows us to hold on to hope. No matter what we do or what’s done to us, it is always constructive to adopt an optimistic attitude. As the saying goes, smile and the world smiles with you, weep and you weep alone. Furthermore, it is true that life may have its ups and downs. It’s easy to lose hope sometimes. If you let yourself down, the situation could only go from bad to worse. But so long as you have an optimistic state of mind, you can have everything under control and therefore be more hopeful. Last but not least, God help those who help themselves. Optimism itself is like God in the depth of our soul. It invites help from people around you, which will eventually increase hope.

16 / 22

In short, optimism is a positive attitude toward life, and it helps to increase hope.

Topic 32 Buying or Borrowing Books?

As we all know, books are close friends of humanity. It’s beyond question that books can enrich our mind, enlighten our spirits, and enhance our life. However, as to borrowing or buying books, people hold different opinions. Some prefer buying, while some speak highly of borrowing. I think it would be more reasonable to take the view that we need both buying and borrowing. As the famous philosopher Bacon said, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested.” Books are of different kinds,so are our ways of getting them. For the books to be tasted and swallowed, such as novels for leisure and stories for fun, I prefer to borrow them. Borrowing them can not only save our money, but more importantly, save us huge amounts of time and improve our reading efficiency, because books borrowed normally have a deadline to force us into finishing them in a limited time. However, for the books to be chewed and digested, such as classical literary works and textbooks, I’d like to buy them. Compared with borrowing books, buying them can offer us more freedom. We can keep the books as long as we wish, and moreover take whatever notes on the margin of the pages.

In short, whether to buy or to borrow books depends on what kind of book it is. The most important thing is not how we get them, but how we discover the pleasure through reading.

Topic 33 Fighting against Our Own Weaknesses

It is well acknowledged that one’s greatest enemy is actually oneself. One can never deny the fact that we all suffer from such human weaknesses as idleness, moodiness, jealousy and vanity to some extent. It follows that we are obliged to fight against those weaknesses of ours if we are to accomplish something in our life. I believe the first weakness for us to conquer is laziness.

Idleness is the root of all evils. A lazy person could never expect to accomplish anything. On the contrary, hard work is essential for anyone to achieve their goals. Secondly, we should work on our moodiness. More than the elderly, we suffer from bad mood now and then. Such negative state of mind will affect our interpersonal relationship. And a good interpersonal relationship constitutes a key factor to success. Remind yourself of what you have in life and be grateful for that. Do regular exercises. Find something interesting to do. These will help cheer you up and create a positive attitude toward life, which will certainly lead to a better you. Moreover, it is very important for us to fight against jealousy and vanity. No one can be free from jealousy and vanity. On the one hand, we feel sorry when other people are doing better than we do. On the other hand, we envy other people for they have achieved what we haven’t. Getting rid of these weaknesses is definitely a great step forward toward self-improvement and future accomplishments.

To sum up, we are obliged to fight and conquer such weaknesses as laziness, moodiness, jealousy and vanity before we could achieve our goals in our life.

Topic 34 Watching TV or Reading Books, Which Brings Us More Benefits? Since the invention of television, more and more people have fallen back on TV for information and entertainment instead of reading books. We cannot deny the fact that TV does have its advantages with its audio-visual effects. But personally speaking, I believe that reading books is more beneficial than watching TV.

To begin with, reading is an active process while watching TV is a passive one. When reading a book, the reader has freedom in controlling the speed and pace, but as far as TV programs are concerned, this is barely possible. Moreover, reading fiction sets free the reader’s imagination and makes him actively participate and anticipate what is happening and what will happen next, while watching TV, for the most part, makes people passive receivers of what is given in the programs, let alone the frequent interruptions by the commercials that attempt to sell unneeded products every 5 minutes. Furthermore, reading is more a learning processthan an entertaining one. Through reading books, people improve their literacy and acquire skills. Watching TV often gives nothing but an entertaining story.

From all the points mentioned above, clearly I am a true believer in the enormous value of reading and sincerely hope people, especially the children, become avid readers rather than devoted TV viewers.

Topic 44A Note to Ask for Some Tips about an English Speech Contest

20 / 22

June 29

Dear Ms Zhang, I wish to tell you that I am going to take part in an English speech contest. As part of the homework, I have already done a lot of reading and seem to have no problem with pronunciation and intonation. I would be very happy if you could offer me some help in regard to the use of idioms and stage skills.

Yours sincerely,

Topic 50A Note to Comfort a Friend Whose Parents Have Just Divorced

April 10th

Dear Anna, I am sorry to have learned that your parents had just divorced. I understand that you are feeling very bad. No one would like to have their family members separate. But we cannot live on wishful thinking, can we? After all, parents have their own problems and they can solve the problems the way they do. I very much hope that you could respect their choice and seek your own independence.
