Describe the most important invention before the computer.

You should say:

What it is.

What it is used for.

What the advantages and disadvantages of it are.

TOPIC 34.1

THE MOST IMPORTANT INVENTION

THE AUTOMOBILE

1. Since its invention, the automobile has become one of the most important means of transport in the world. Automobiles have completely changed the lifestyles of almost all people in the world.

2. On the positive side, people can go anywhere by car more rapidly compared to on foot or riding a horse in the past. And thus people can realize their dreams of traveling to far off places.

3. On the negative side, automobiles are the main source of air pollution in the world. This creates the so-called 揼reen-house?effect, which leads to many serious environmental problems.

As for the applications of the automobile are concerned, I would like to highlight the following:

4. Firstly, it has totally changed the way in which we travel. In the past, animals like horses, mules, and camels were used for traveling and the transportation of goods. Compared to previous ways of traveling, automobiles are more comfortable and faster.

5. In addition, the automobiles have made it possible for us to transport large quantities of goods and people at one time. For example, mega-trucks and busses are well suited for these purposes.

6. Lastly, the invention of the automobile has resulted in many new industries being formed. The repairs and spare-parts industries for example, provide jobs to millions of people all over the world.

Describe a person.

The person I want to describe is my mother.

She’s 55 years old, medium-built, and she’s about 166 centimetres in height. She has an attractive face and looks younger than her age. She has round face, big eyes, and beautiful eyelashes. She likes wearing casual clothes unless she’s at work when she normally wears lady’s formal wear.

My mother works as an accountant in a trade company. She studied accounting at Fudan University and she has always been working as an account since graduation. She’s warm-hearted, open-minded, and always willing to help other people who are in need of help. Although she’s not a young lady anymore, she’s very willing and ready to accept new things. She likes singing, dancing, watching movies, reading, planting flowers at home. She is also a big sports fan, I mean, she likes playing badminton, jogging, cycling. I guess that’s the reason why she is still in very good shape at 55 years old.

I think what makes me love my mother the most is that she is so dedicated to the family, that is, she loves my father and me so much. No matter how tired she is after working for a long day, or how many frustrations she has faced herself at work, when she comes back home from her office, she becomes very happy straightaway when seeing my father and me. I guess she has given me so many supports in so many ways…for example, telling me not to give up when I failed to get into university, encouraging me to be a strong person when I didn’t do well in my job interviews, etc. With her blessing, I learnt my way to grow up and finally reach where I am today.

I think she’s the most important person in my life. I am very proud of my mother and I love her. I feel so lucky to such a great mother.

I wish I could say there was one person that I admire the most, but truth us there are more than one. One person that comes to mind the most beleive it or not is Angelina Jolie. A celebirty is a funny one to admire... But what i admire of her is the dedication that she has to the causes that are true to her. Now that can mean anything and some people might say that she is just another celebirty in search of recognition. But what I see is someone that has used her celebrity for the betterment of others in ways that are more than superficial. Unlike Madonna and others she has worked hard and has spent days at a time if not weeks in places like a fganistan and Leone for her cause. She has given without condition and as a result of it has given a home to children that otherwise would not have another chance. So I admire her as a true humanitarian. If fame follows her it is truely because we cannot get enough of her and not because she invites it.

But the one person that I admire the most my grandmother. She was a great woman and one that held on in times of turmoil, she taught me to be strong and if I have to cry go ahead. But to keep focused and when I was done feeling sorry for myself get to work on fixing the problem and not dwelling on it. She taught me that no one said life was fair so quit acting like some one said it was and then took it away. Be a woman, and being a woman is expecting respect as well as demanding it.Funny thing, she always said a man's world is always easier than a womans. So if all you have to do is get through a mans world you are home free!!

Describe an Art Works.

1. I love the works of Eva Hesse and Cindy Sherman, for different reasons, obviously. Eva Hesse's visceral

fiber and sculptural installations fascinate me. And Cindy Sherman's cultural and psychological explorations into identity titillate me and engage my higher brain functioning at the same time. I love the paradox.

2. I saw Wolfgang Laib's exhibit at the Smithsonian several years ago, and the serene beauty of his pollen,

beeswax, and milk sculptures, and the science behind them, opened me up to a new kind of understanding of conceptual art -- that it can be beautiful and still have meaning, and reflect and be based in nature, all at the same time. It was extremely significant to me, to see that art can be all of these things.

3. When I was younger, I was introduced to the work of San Diego artist Christopher Reilly. I still have his

early work on my walls, and I am still in love with it and being inspired by it. Also, Santjes Oomen was an artist whose work -- while I never acquired any -- lingers in my mind, and I recognize how it has influenced me.

4. And, finally, I have to say the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman has inspired me tremendously. He is more

than an actor; he is an artist, and if you pay attention to the subtleties of his work, his delving into the psychology of the characters he plays -- it's really amazing. There is something about his work that moved me to get up off of the couch and start making stuff again.

Describe a Park(Place).

The park I want to describe is Yan’an Park. It’s very close to my home, just behind the Sheraton Hotel. One can either enter the park through the main gate on Yan’an Road, or from the east gate on Yili Road.

The park is really beautiful. It’s got quite a few different areas and it is very peaceful. There are pathways all around the park and a lot of grass and trees. There are two ponds in the park – a small one where you can go fishing in the summer time, and a very large pond where you can go skating in the winter time. Near the large pond is a picnic area where you can sit down and relax. It’s nice and shady because there are many tall trees nearby. There’s also a play area for small children with games and rides, a restaurant and a snack bar, and an indoor swimming pool.

I first found the park a few years ago after a friend told me about it. I went to see it myself, but it took me a long time to find it because the entrances were quite small. When I entered it, I was amazed at how large and pretty it was. To me, it seemed like a hidden oasis in the busy city.

My first visit to Yan’an Park made me want to return again and again. I love going to this park because it makes me feel relaxed and happy. It’s such a nice feeling just to walk along the shady paths under big oak trees or just sit down by the bond watching the fished swimming. Also I like to watch the children playing in the children’s areas,

because they are so cute and often remind me of my younger days. It’s a nice break from the busy city life, a get-away experience from the fast pace of life.

What do you consider as good "Internet skills"?

In my opinion every child should be trained to type since most of the communication online is done in writing. The Internet is an excellent resource to find an answer to almost any question. But in order to express your question properly you need to be able to type fast and correctly.

Another basic skill is using a search engine. As of now Google is by far the best choice so being able to "google" is a vital skill nowadays. Proper googling requires a number of things. Depending on the nature of your question you might need to brainstorm appropriate keywords in order to find the answer. That's why you should use the Google toolbar which sometime makes suggestions as to the keywords you can enter. It also keeps track of the keywords you entered previously so you don't have to put them when you are repeating your query.

If you want to know how popular a certain phrase is you have to put that very phrase into quotation marks.

So, what skills do you think are important when it comes to using the Internet?

Well, you just mentioned the most vital - fast typing. Being able to get somewhere as fast as possible is crucial, and typing speed is essential. The reason I second your opinion about speed is because I can confirm it - I won such a contest two or three years ago, and, I must say, it does give me quite an edge over most people. Certainly, there are other factors which also very important - such as, as you named it, brainstorming, also knowing the language flawlessly can bring better results. The ability to work with basic programs could significantly ease one's navigation, too. Knowing the Internet slang, which is not a small a part of this type of communication, could be very useful as well.

My most important Internet skill was learned before personal computers were invented. When I was a kid, my parents thought typing was a necessary survival skill in modern society, so they made me take typing class in high school, where we learned to use typewriters. My friends who thought "secretaries do the typing everywhere" never learned to type, and their efficiency on the computer is hampered because of that.

One important Internet skill is to have a real understanding that computers don't know anything and can't think. Understanding this makes it easier for a person to figure out how the computer is retrieving information, so you can use not only search engines, but other tools better. You'd be amazed at how many people think computers know things and can think.
