The University of Colorado Boulder’s Flagship 2030 strategic plan promotes exceptional teaching, research, scholarship, creative works, and service distinguishing us as a premier university. We strive to foster a diverse and inclusive community for all that engages each member in opportunities for academic excellence, leadership, and a deeper understanding of the world in which we live. Given the statement above, how do you think you could enrich our diverse and inclusive community, and what are your hopes for your college experience?

Nowadays, diversity has been more and more popular and important in our daily life. When we watch movies, we would like to choose ones that can provide us a picture of other countries or life of other people. When we read novel, we prefer to choose ones that describe a different life or scene from us. Above all, diversity has become a more significant factor when making a decision. As we all know, China has a long history and rich culture in the world. It is no doubt that Chinese people and Chinese culture play an important role in a diverse community. The University of Colorado Boulder applies itself to fostering a diverse and inclusive community. So joining in the Colorado Boulder will be both heart-stirring and honored. I always feel excited once considering that I will have the chance to experience the academic excellence, leadership and a deeper understanding of the world in the Colorado Boulder.

I believe that the diversity of a community relies mostly on culture diversity and culture communication, which are both based on diverse people in the community. Chinese culture is so rich that can make a community much more diverse. For example, many foreign people are very interested in Chinese Kung Fu, and many regard Li Xiaolong and Cheng Long as their idols. Even I have not exercise Kong Fu myself, but I love it very much especially taichi, and I like to watch Kong Fu movies. If I am honored to be a part of them, I can recommend and introduce Kung Fu to them. Besides, Chinese calligraphy attracts a great many people. I intend to form a small team with people who are interested in calligraphy and exercise with them in our

spare time. What’s more, I think Chinese folk dance is one of the most beautiful forms of dance in the world. It represents the enthusiasm of minority and expresses their passion for life. So I would like to introduce various Chinese folk dances to my community.

I have always been thinking what life will be like in the Colorado Boulder including many fields of the campus life since I decided the application. What kind of courses will I have and are they difficult? What kind of schoolmates will I encounter and will they be welcome? I can not prevent myself from thinking that. But one thing I can make sure is that I will be fascinated by the diversity of the Colorado Boulder. I look forward to making friends with people from different countries, and I would like to communicate and share with them about life in our own country, and I love to know about their customs and festivals. Besides, I want to go to the lectures about various fields. I desire to accept messages of the world in the first time. Above all, I hope to adapt to the teaching style of the Colorado Boulder as soon as possible.

Who are the influential people in your life? How have they contributed to your development as a person?

In my life of more than twenty years, I have received much help and guidance from various people, but I would like to choose my mother as the most influential people in my life with my great gratitude. There are two impressive principles I have learned from my mother.

Learn to be independent is the first and most significant principle I understand and have been pursuing all the time. From my childhood on, my mother always told me to be independent and firm. She always said ”No one would company with you all the time, so you should learn to be take care of yourself.” So I tend to achieve what I need by myself. And when something difficult occurs, I prefer to figure them out by myself rather than rely on other people. I believe whatever issues I encounter or wherever I will be in the future, I will get through them more easily.

The other important principle I get from my mother is to be kind to everyone. She believes that everyone is alone in the world, we need respect, care and security and so on much more than we can imagine. So my mother always is very kind to others even if she does not know them. Thus I have developed a habit to share my experience with others and try my best to help people around me. And through sharing and communicating with others, I often receive more kind and happiness from them too.
