1 Nowadays, we enjoy the same film, fashion, brands and TV program. Differences between countries have become less evident. Do you think the disadvantage of this outweigh the advantage?

Nowadays, people all over the world share the same Hollywood movies and fashion. When some people are cheering the colorful life which the cultural globalization brings, others raise doubts about it. To my mind, cultural globalization’s disadvantages outweigh its advantages.

On the one hand, cultural globalization has a lot of advantages. First of all, globalization is a vital process toward transferring knowledge and education throughout the world. Secondly, people can enjoy cultural achievements by artists all over the world, such as films, TV programs, music, opera etc. Finally, the exchange of culture could enhance mutual understanding, create goodwill and remove the hostility and prejudice between different nations.

On the other hand, people who are against the cultural globalization have their own reasons. Firstly, the cultural globalization may extinguish cultural individuality and diversity of minor countries and minority groups. It is reported 90% of the world‘s languages are not represented on the Internet; five main countries monopolize the world cultural industries trade and in the field of cinema, for instance, 88 countries out of 185 in the world have never had their own film production. Moreover, globalization erodes local languages and promotes ‘Global’ English. A recent study published by the University of Hong Kong demonstrates that more than 80% of 6000 languages in the world are dying out because of globalization/ under threat of extinction. Last but not least, globalization has produced adverse effects on local cultural tradition and civilizations. Some people assert that the globalization actually is, to a large extent, Americanization and make it extremely difficult to maintain cultural integrity and religious identity. For example, Beijing Opera, one of most famous traditional arts of China, has gradually lost its attraction to young people.

In my opinion, although the cultural globalization has some positive influences on our lives, we can not neglect the negative effect on local culture.

2. Even though Globalization affects the world’s economics in a very positive way, its negative sides should not be forgotten, discuss.

Everything has tow sides in the world, and so has the process of globalization too. The effects of globalization for the world economy are diverted.

We must acknowledge that the negative effects are from a different kind than the positive ones. Therefore the negative sides, like low payment in less developed countries are important to considerate.

If we take the Euro zone for example, the economic-changes according to the globalization process are huge. Many companies have transferred their factories into cheaper production easier to compete at the world market. The results are rising unemployment rates in the “old industrial countries”.

In regard to the other countries on the world market, like China, this job transfer is a big opportunity. But no one can deny that the consequences for the less developed countries with flourished economy, based on availability of cheap employees are highly important: Globalization based on this fact brings environmental problems.

Nevertheless there are also positive reasons for global effects. In general it is remarkable that there is a new tendency in “Thinking Global”. For instance people are willing to learn more languages and about other cultures. Countries formally known as undeveloped, like India, are getting chances to be the main leader in a certain field.

All in all it can be said that the effects of globalization are huge. The understanding of economic processes has changed completely. It is important to think in bigger terms, not just about the own country. The positive things that this globalization process has brought must be sensible us for the negative sides. The all over aim should be a world in balance, but this will be a long way.  (6.5分)

3 Nowadays we can enjoy the same films, fashions, brands, advertisements and TV channels. The evident difference between countries is disappearing. To what extent do you think the disadvantages overweight the advantages of this?

Globalization creates conditions for widening international exchanges, strengthening mutual understanding between nations, expanding cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation between nations and countries, enjoying the cultural achievements of people around the world which encourages the process of modernization and the enrichment of national culture.

However, these conditions also create the possible danger of diminishing the national culture with a negative impact on the pre123vation of national identity. Through globalization and an open door policy, erroneous concepts and a lowering of ethical standards, a selfish and individualistic lifestyle and harmful cultural products can easily be imported into the country. At present, modern information technology which in the main is controlled by US is hourly and intensively disseminating US ideology, way of life, culture and films across the world. Even US food is promoted so that some people consider globalization as global Americanization.

During the process of economic globalization, inequality between developed and developing countries has been increasing and the gap between the rich and the poor has become wider, most of the result of globalization go to assist developed countries. Globalization does not pose equal interests and risks to all nations. With an overwhelming advantage compared to most of the developing countries in terms of finance and the level of science and technology, developed ca123alist countries control the situation of economic globalization.

For these reasons, globalization is a fierce and complicated struggle in both cultural and ideological fields. We take the initiative in international economic integration but also have to take the initiative in fighting to keep our distinct culture resisting pro-foreign and cross-bred phenomena, and overcoming the psychology of preferring money over ethical values.

Some people think that spreading multinationalcompanies and the increasing globalization producepositive effects to everyone. Do you agree ordisagree?

It is becoming clear that the growing globalization, and along with it the expanding multinational companies, is not likely to benefit all the people all the time. In theoryglobalization could be the answer to the world's seemingly intractable economic problems, butin practice it might backfire because its fragility has often been underestimated. While thisgame is now inevitable, some people are wondering if the economy of each country has to bedependent on the economy of all the rest countries in order to make everybody happy.

Multinational companies are big players in the game, reshaping world trade. The internationaleconomy that used to be is giving way to a new multinational economy as these companies playan increasingly decisive role in globalization changes. The dominance of leading corporations ishelping capitals and technologies flow, and goods and services move beyond borders in whatseems like a win-win situation. Free trade does pay off, spurring economic growth, creatingjobs, reducing labor costs, and lowering prices on many products, among other obviousbenefits, even though the practice is not without negative consequences. For example, toomuch outsourcing jobs overseas has been criticized in the United States because it presents anew threatcontributing to work insecurity and economic recession at home. However, insome labor-intensive countries, too much financial reliance on big foreign firms gives rise todoubts if it would not be an allusion to a new form of colonialism in the making.

The effects of globalization are manifold, affecting various aspects of people's lifestyles as wellas world economy, chiefly because of marketing strategies undertaken by different multinationalcompanies. Promotion of liberal trade activities is perhaps the greatest achievement ofglobalization, acting as a boon to world economy in which fruits of success can be shared byas many people as expected. From this viewpoint, globalization is a a positive development.Nevertheless, there are reasons that not everyone really thinks highly of the epidemicglobalization which is changing individuals' lifestyles in a manner too far too fast. In somedeveloping countries, there are worries among people that multinational companies and bigeconomies are controlling the way they live and the way they work. Currently in some developedcountries, due largely to negative effects of globalization there appears no end of bad newsinvariably related to unemployment troubles and financial disasters.

Regardless of its advantages and drawbacks, globalization is a fact of life and is here to stay likethe Internet and other inventions which further push international exchanges. It remains to beseen whether globalization engineered by multinational empires may just turn out to be thebest or the worst phenomenon that can happen to people around the world. While the gameis far from over, one thing is sure: happy or not, there is no turning back.

Globalization is a declarationof war upon all other cultures. And in culture wars, there is no exemption of civilians, there are no innocent bystanders. Why should it be expected that ancient and rooted civilizations are going to accept this peripheralisationwithout a struggle? The answer to that is that globalization carries an implicit promise that it will relieve poverty and offer security—perhaps the most ancient of human dreams. Because of the power of global capitalism to create wealth, it is assumed that this priority must sweep aside all other human preoccupations, including all existing institutions, interpretations and searches for meaning in the world.

It is disingenuous to assume that economy, society and culture operate in separate spheres. This suggests that, one, exposed to the globalizing imperative, no aspect of social life, customary practice, traditionalbehaviour will remain the same.

There have been, broadly, two principal responses in the world, which we may call the fatalistic and the resistant. It is significant that among the most fatalistic have been the leaders of G-7, Ex-President Clinton said globalization is a fact not a policy choice Tony Blair said it is inevitable and irreversible. It may be considered paradoxical that the leaders of the most dynamic and expanding economies in the world offer such a passive, unchallenging view of what are, after all, human-made arrangements. These are among the richest and most proactive regimes, which can wage endless war on the great abstraction, that is terror, topple regimes and lay down one WTO law for the poor and another for themselves. Is their helplessness in the presence of these mighty economic and cultural powers?

There are two aspects to resistance. One is the reassertion of local identities—even if local actually means spread over very large parts of the world. The reclaiming of the local is often focused in the field of culture—music, songs and dance. This suggests an attempt to guaranteeit from the effects of economic integration; a kind of cordon sanitaria set up around a dwindling culture. Some people believe it is possible to get the best of both world—they accept the economic advantages of globalization and seek to maintain something of great value—language, tradition and custom. This is the relatively response. The other has become only too familiar: the violent reaction, the hatred of both economic and cultural globalization which may not merely perceive, but feel in the very core of their cognition, as an inseparable violation of identity. The resentment of many Muslims toward the U.S and Israel, the defensiveposturing of Vindu fundamentalism, opposed both to Islam and Christianity, are the most vivid dramatizationsof this.

Modern buildings are appearing in large numbers but some people believe that we should build our buildings in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, an interesting trend has emerged. Countries with long histories and rich cultures have been modernizing the quickest, especially in terms of architecture. Many have criticized this as not respecting traditional culture. While traditional architecture should be protected, however, I feel it is not necessary to stop building modern structures as we move forward.

One reason for this is that modern buildings are more practical and comfortable to live and work in. While traditional buildings might look nice from the outside, they are often not very user-friendly. Modern buildings usually have lots of windows and light and are clean and energy efficient. Surely this will make those inside them happier.

Another point to consider is that modern buildings will give a good impression to those visiting from abroad. Consider Beijing during the Olympics, for example. Many foreigners were surprised to see all of the stunning new building designs. In the long run, this will probably attract more business and tourists to the country.

Of course, traditional architecture still has its value. Everyone loves visiting famous historical places and admiring architectural styles from throughout history. We should protect and appreciate such places for future generations, but at the same time, we don’t have to live in the past.

Ultimately, each city needs to find its own balance between “old” and “new” when it comes to building styles, but modern buildings are for sure a positive thing. After all, if we don’t continue to explore new building styles we won’t be able to let future generations know what our period of history was like.

Even though globalization affects the world’s economies in a positive way, its negative side should not be forgotten. Discuss.

In the present age, globalization is playing an increasingly important role in our lives. But in the meantime whether it is a blessing or a curse has sparked a heated debate. Some people argue that globalization has a fundamentally beneficial influence on our lives, while many others contend that it has a detrimental effect as well.

A convincing argument can be made about globalization not only playing a pivotal role in the development of technology and economy, but also promoting the cultural exchange between different countries. To start with, it is the globalization that impelled many cooperate to become an international group, thereby making a contribution to the local technology and employment. Specifically, when a multinational group establish a factory in a developing country, the new equipment, the new management skills and the job vacancies are all in the best interest of the local society. Moreover, people worldwide can get to know each other better through globalization. It is easy to see that more and more Hollywood blockbusters show cultures different from American, some recent examples are ‘Kungfu Panda’ and ‘The Mummy’.

Admittedly, profit driven globalization has severely affected young people. Today, in the metropolises in different countries, it is very common to see teenagers wearing NIKE T-shirts and Adidas footwear, playing Hip-Hop music on Apple iPods and eating at KFC. The culture that took a thousand years to form just seems similar in these cities; it is looks like you can only distinguish them by their language. Meanwhile, in some developing countries, sweat workshops are always a concerning issue. For instance, reports show that some teenagers employed by NIKE’s contractors work in smelly factories over 14 hours a day, but are only paid fifty cents per hour.

In summary, I would concede that globalization does come with some adverse effects. Despite that fact, benefits created by it far outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, I am convinced that we should further promote globalization and meanwhile the local government should take measures to combat culture assimilation and sweat workshops.

Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Historic buildings present the history, culture as well as citizens` lives of a city for generations. They are also good places attracting tourists all over the world. Further more, they play important roles in public spirit. Therefore, I think that a city should preserve its historic buildings.

First, historic buildings are useful for studies. For each period of time, there are its typical architectures. Historic buildings reflect those architectures and materials that our predecessors used in construction. By studying them, researchers could get understanding about the evolution of not only construction but also society and culture. History as well as society develops continuously, the later generation bases on and inherits from the former and so on. Hence, understanding about the progress of evolution helps us to know better about humanity. This knowledge can be helpful to improve our lives now and our children`s later.

Additionally, historic buildings bring advantages of tourism. In deed, when visiting a place, tourists are always attracted by historic places such as museums, palaces, or buildings. They are fascinated in something different from their home country or different from daily modern life. By maintaining and preserving historic buildings, governments can attract many tourists to visit their city. Consequently, they can get much benefit from tourism. For example, in China, tourism brings in billions dollar benefit annually, and the government also invests a lot of money in developing tourism, especially in maintaining and caring for historic places. For many countries, tourism becomes the sharpest profession.

The last but not the least, historic buildings are spiritual places. People often go to historic places for ceremony or celebration. They come these places to thank for what their ancestors did for them, and wish good things for them and their children. Nevertheless, people are usually proud of their well-known historic place. For instance, French are so proud of their Eiffel tower, Egypt is famous for its pyramid.

In conclusion, historic buildings are invaluable proofs for social and human development studies. They reflect the evolution of history, culture of an area. They are places of public spirit and bring people pride of their city. Furthermore, they are good places to attract tourists and develop tourism. Hence, it is a very good idea that a city should maintain and preserve its historic buildings.
