It is often said that the subjects taught in schools are too academic in orientation and that would be mire useful for children to learn about practical matters such as home management, work and interpersonal skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model answer:

There has always been more to learn than schools have time to teach, so inevitably some things and subjects that are considered to be less important must be left out. Has the education system become too focused on academic subjects, leaving our children without key practical skills? Many people argue that schools should focus on teaching academic subjects whilst more practical, non-academic ones should be learn outside school, especially in the home from parents do not have sufficient practical skills themselves. Therefore, they can’t automatically be expected to pass these skills on to their children. The second thing is that there is not necessarily a clear division between academic subjects and practical skill that is useful both in the academic world and in the workplace. The ability to manage household finances is a practical skill that uses an academic subject (mathematics).

Both practical skills and academic skills can be learnt outside school. However, academic subjects are less likely to be learnt outside the formal education system simply because most children do not want to spend their evenings and weekends on learning more than their teachers have

told then about such topics. It should be noted that free time activities such as playing sports, listening to music and watching TV can help children learn about practical matters. Team sports encourage children to cooperate. Listening to music can inspire children to learn to play musical instruments. Many TV programs teach people about real life and help them to develop practical skills, such as cooking and how to deal with money.

In conclusion, I believe that schools should focus more on academic subjects, but that the relevance of these to everyday life can be emphasized by teachers. It would help if we were more careful about making such a big distinction between academic subjects and practical abilities.

Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people think that the money spent on looking after animals in zoos or national parks would be better spent on improving the lives of the human population. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In the light of Hegelian philosophy that “whatever is true is reasonable; whatever is reasonable is true”, I wouldn’t simply reject the notion that animals should be looked after in zoos or national parks, nor accept it as justified that money spent on animals should be, instead, spent on improving lives of human population, but I sincerely believe that this is a matter that needs careful examination of its initiatives and possible consequences before any decision can be made.

Human society, to begin with, had long established zoos or national parks for various reasons, some long before they were even called by the name “zoo”. However, zoos are mainly built and kept for two major purposes: public display and conservation of animals.

From a psychological perspective, human beings need entertainment, which helps them to either shift their focus and thus temporarily forget their worries or release the built-up energy of stress in a good laugh. A trip to the zoo might just do the work; at least it is more civilized to watch animals roam around and play than watching people fight for lives against ferocious beasts in Roman arena.

From an ecological perspective, the environment and the diverse life system it sustains are altogether a delicate equilibrium. Any slight change may wreak

unexpected havoc on human lives. It must be, therefore, carefully tended, to which animal species (not just animals but all living things) are essential and must be conserved if we are to preserve the one and only earth for us and our offsprings. Having inspected zoo and its purposes, it is therefore not hard to see that spending money on zoos or national parks for either entertaining purpose or species conservation is improving human lives if not maintaining the current level at least,

and therefore must be commended. But any spending on zoos for other than the above mentioned purposes should be denounced as money squandered, and therefore must be stopped in time.
