Book Report: 《Oliver Twist》

When I was a freshman, I have read part of the novel Oliver Twist and also seen the movie, but I did not really know the true meaning that it contains. This year I gain a chance to study English novels and therefore I have studied Oliver Twist further.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. He was only a little boy who should have been cared by his parents, while he had to lived by himself and suffer enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse.Child as he was, he was desperate with hunger and reckless with misery. I was shocked by his tragic experiences. Compared with him, are we much happier than him? But few of us realize that. We always think God treat us unfairly and complain that we have no much money to spend, no beautiful cloth to wear, no dignified quality, and no attractive face. Are we too greedy? So we should learn to be contended and learn to be happy.

In spite of my pity for Oliver’s unlucky experience, what impressed me most is that though little Oliver suffered

much he still remained a pour heart and fought with the evil bravely.Although he was born in a poor family and grew up in the dark and criminal world .He still kept an unsophisticated world and a kind heart. No matter how hard he was, he never gave up and corrupt. He showed us his gracious quality .This inspires me very much, and in our current society we face too many difficulties and temptations, can we be ourselves? In face of money and interest, many people give in it. They lost their minds and became degenerated. In face of difficulties, we lose heart and become discouraged. Can we face it bravely like Oliver?

The poor children had the opportunity to observe the residents of the London streets from close quarters. In order to escape the pangs of hunger and shadow of insecurity, they took to lied ,stolen ,cheated and did all criminal things what they could do.Poverty lead to crime and crime result in isolation.

For instance, Nacy was an unfortunate woman who had fallen into the evil hands of Fagin because of her poverty and destitution. She was haunted by her guilt and regretted her presence in the criminal world. However, she felt

helpless in the midst of criminals who fail to understand her feelings and offer her no sympathy. She felt isolated from the world around her. So we should have a deep contemplation from Nacy ’death. So in our life we should stretch a hand to the poor and should not be so mean to the beggar otherwise we are the same as the people in the warehouse. If every of us show out our sympathetic side, our society can be more harmonious.

Oliver, Nacy and Rose were all the representatives of the kind .Nacy treated Oliver as her young brother so that she helped and cared him in many situations even she finally killed by his bloody husband for rescuing Oliver. Brown protected Oliver from murdering because he was kind and sympathetic to him. All they were strong due to their kind hearts. The goodness eventually conquered devil, all the evil people were punished, all the kind people have a happy ending. For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a

happy and useful person.

So I believe righteousness can always beat evil and good people will have good endings. I think what I thought is also what the author wants to tell. Although there are many ugly things in the world, we must believe that righteousness can always beat evil. We must store kindness even though we are in ugly situation. One is poor if he doesn’t have kindness. One is rich if he has kindness. So please store your kindness in your mind.

So the world is dirty but we must maintain a pure soul. Everyone should devote himself to the world and in that way our world will become nice . We must value our present conditions ,study hard and become a useful person for the society as well as make contribution to the society. ——数学1401 小乾

Review of ‘Oliver Twist’

As you have read ‘Oliver Twist’, a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century which has became one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, you can really understand the worlds‘regain the nature of goodness’.

Charles Dickens was born in a poor family ,having a poor background ,he wrote this novel in his twenties ,who was just with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals,as well as to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.

The hero of ‘Oliver Twist’ was an orphan named Oliver Twist, when he was born ,he was thrown into a world which is full of poverty and crime. He has suffered enormous pains, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt really sorry for the poor boy, but at the same time I detest the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as all the happy stories do, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a

happy life at the end. One of the plots which attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

Sometimes,in the deep and quiet nights,I keep asking myself, how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

Reflect on myself,I define the nature of goodness to be one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the

contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

There are some worlds in an essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of

vermin.’.

All in all,if a person without goodness ,he is destined to lose everything. Thereby, all those ‘vermin-to-be’ should learn from the book and remember to regain the nature of goodness in the bottom of theirs’hearts.
