Should Class Attendance Be Required?

Nowadays required class attendance is very common at colleges and universities. Most people take it for granted that students should attend all the classes required by school. However still some others do not agree with this argument. They don't think it should be compulsory for students to attend class.

As for me, I'm in favor of the latter opinion. The following reasons can account for my preference. First, the rigid attendance policy does not benefit students' studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he finds useful to his studies simply because he dare not run the rest of being penalized for his absence in his course. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A student should be allowed to tell for himself whether an inclass experience is worthwhile. Finally and most importantly, there is no proving and corelation between class attendance and academic performance. A student may never be absent in a course, but who knows whether or not he is just sitting there daydreaming all the time.

In conclusion, class attendance may secure one hundred percent attendance for a course. But it is not really beneficial to us. As college students we should learn to make the right decisions for ourselves about whether to attend a class.

COLLEGE STUDENTS SHOULD ATTEND PHYSICAL EXERCISE Physical exercise is a necessary part of college life. However, still some college students do not like to attend sports activities, they think those activities waste their time and influence their study. Indeed, it is very unwise for college students to keep distance from physical exercise because physical exercise is not harmful but good to them. College students can benefit a lot from physical exercise. First of all, attending physical sports can help students build a strong body, and keep abounding energy. Moreover, physical exercise is an effective way to relief pressure and keep a pleasant move. Besides, by attending physical activities, students can have chances to contact and communicate with others which can help them improve their social skills. Nowadays, all colleges and universities have provided many sports facilities for students to do physical exercises, students can chose freely according to their interests and needs. As for me, I am keen on all kinds of ball games, especially football and basketball. From these games, I have gained a lot, and enjoined great pleasure. To conclude, physical exercise is beneficial to every college students, and therefore do not hesitate to attend sports activities.Online games As a product of modern computer and the Internet, online games have become very popular among college students. Many students have enjoyed great pleasure and satisfaction from these games. But as we see, some students lacking self discipline on too much indulge in these games. So that their health and academic performances are affected. This phenomenon has caused much worry from the teachers and parents. However, some others argue that online games are not always harmful. They can train their ability of youngsters to respond to things quickly. Moreover, they can stimulate their imagination and their interest in computer science. More importantly, it does bring college students much pleasure and release their pressure greatly. Form my point of view, online games are wonderful entertainment if you play them in a clever way. When they interfere too much with your study, it is better for you to give them up at once, but if you have enough self control over them, you can certainly obtain real pleasure and benefit a lot from them.Certificates Craze on Campus In recent years, to get a certificate has become a new craze among college students. Just randomly, ask a student on campus what he or she is busy doing, quite possibly, you may get the answer that he or she is preparing for a certificate of some kind. Why does this craze appear? There are two mainly reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the employments pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a large more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job marke

ts. How can one make himself more competitive, more certificates at hands maybe. Second, the diplomas and certificates are still important standard by which many employers measure a person’s ability in order to increase qualification for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another. Form my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability, being crazy in getting certificates blindly. It is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value.Certificates Craze on Campus In recent years, to get a certificate has become a new craze among college students. College students are often obsessed by peer pressure from their classmates or schoolmates. Facing others’ hard work and good performance in academic and other aspects, many students feel great pressure. Then, how to deal with this kind of peer pressure? The following measures can be taken. First, you should take a careful look at your present level and set a practical object. You needn’t always compare yourselves with those on the top and just make your efforts towards your object. Second, under peer pressure, you shouldn’t feel discouraged and pressed. Instead, you should make it your motivation for harder work. Finally, if you find pressure is nearly beyond your control, you’d better turn to professional psychological guidance. As a college student, I have no way to avoid peer pressure, so I try to figure out the way to do with it well. I set my own goal, including my practical level and my position among the peers. Because of my focus on my own goal, I have no time and energy to think ab

out the pressure. So I’m little troubled by it. To conclude, we should not escape from peer pressure, but learn to make best use of it, since it can hardly be avoided.Art and Humor Millions of people struggle out of bed each morning, fumble into some clothes, and make their way to a cup of coffee and the morning newspaper①. They need something cheerful to remind them that the rest of the day will be less difficult than getting up. This need may be the reason that many of them turn their half-opened eyes to the comics section of the newspaper as they sip their first cups of coffee of the day. Cartoons reflect the times and the troubles and worries of people. They give people an opportunity to laugh at themselves and at familiar situations. For example, a cartoon might say that the government of a country is responsible for the bad economy and also show the government leaders as a group of ridiculous people. Being able to use the leaders as scapegoats and to laugh at the leaders somehow makes people feel better about their situation. Cartoons also make people laugh at their own personal worries. Young people who are not always sure of how to act can smile at their awkwardness. Old people whose grown children pay little attention to them can chuckle at their neglect and loneliness. Students who have studied too little before an examination can laugh at their anxiety. Everyone’s problems are made bigger–than–life in the comics. Perhaps the problems seem funny because there is humor in something that is real being made unreal. A cartoon combines art and humor. When it is skillfully done, a simple line drawing and a few words can make people laugh. Their troubles seem less important, and they enjoy life more fully.Appetite One of the major pleasures in life is appetite, and one of our major duties should be to preserve it. Appetite is the keenness of living: it is one of the senses that tells you that you are still curious to exist, that you still have an edge on your longings and want to bite into the world and taste its numerous flavors and juices. By appetite, of course, I don’t mean just the desire for food, but any condition of unsatisfied desire, any burning in the blood that proves you want more than you’ve got, and that you haven’t used up your life. Wilde said he felt sorry for those who never got their heart’s desire, but sorrier still for those who did. For appetite, for me, is this state of wanting, which keeps one’s expectations alive. I remember learning this lesson long ago as a child, when treats and indulgence were few, and when I discovered that the greatest pitch happiness was not in actually eating a toffee but in gazing at it beforehand. True, the first bite was delicious, but once the toffee was gone one was left with nothing, neither toffee nor lust. Besides, the whole toffeeness of toffees was imperceptibly diminished by the gross a

ct of having eating it. No, the best was in wanting it, in sitting and looking at it, when one tasted an endless treasure house of flavors. So, for me, one of the keenest pleasures of appetite remains in the wanting, not the satisfaction. In wanting a peach, or a whisky, or a particular texture or sound, or to be with a particular friend, for in those condition, of course, I know that the object of desire is always at its most flawlessly perfect. For that matter, I don’t want three square meals a day — I want one huge, delicious, orgiastic, table groaning blow out, say every four days, and then not be too sure where the next one is coming from①. A day of fasting is not for me just a device for denying oneself a pleasure, but rather a way of anticipating a rarer moment of supreme enjoyment. The Importance of Accessories Do you ever feel unfashionable?Have you ever wondered how to keep up with new trends? If you answered yes, then don’t worry! Many people feel they have to dress a certain way. Fashion is a reflection of your character. Don’t let other peoples’ opinions influence how you dress! It’s important not to feel forced into the fashion choices you make. You may not be able to carry off a new look if it doesn’t suit your character. Fashion should be fun so don’t be afraid to try out new styles. If you don’t feel brave enough to try a whole new wardrobe, accessories are the answer! By changing only your accessories, you’ll be saving money and then you’ll be able to keep up with the newest trends. Adding accessories such as a bag, a belt, a hat, a scarf or jewellery can really change your look. For example, a pair of jeans and a T-shirt can be made into several different outfits for different events. Currently, the sporty look is very popular. You may want accessories with a baseball cap and sweatbands or by carrying a sports bag. To add some glamour, you could wear a silk scarf as a belt. You could also wear jewellery such as wire bracelets and some dangling earrings. These will transform your look into a glamorous gypsy style. Whatever style you choose to follow, remember that fashion should be fun and most importantly it should be about you!Electricity The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators. Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for million of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humani

ty. All living cell send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small - often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cell are linked together, the effects can be astonishing. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can seed a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it live. (An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body. The Beginning of Drama There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The on most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world-even the seasonal changes-as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used, furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area" and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect-success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun-as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities. Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this vies tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialog

ue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.Televisions Television-----the most pervasive and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth-is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies. The word "television", derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image. Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication, and as such becomes a powerful tool for reaching other human beings. The field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is nonbroadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques. Traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, who have been the major purveyors of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer. The Definition of “Price” Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the “system” of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked

to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else. If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define “price”, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words that price is the money values of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total “package” being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.Schooling and Education It is commonly believed in United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important. Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life. Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For e

xample, high school students know that there not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling. The Language of Music A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm-two entirely different movements. Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sounds with fanatical but selfless authority. Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.ideals everyone has his ideals. a businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better. and everyone strives, with more or less effort, to realize his ideal. one should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or not. if it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. and very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in one form or another. my ideal is to become a doctor, it is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but i take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving people’s lives. to realize my ideal i have concentrated on laboratory work to develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. i am sure i will realize my ideal if i persevere in this pursuit. 19.popular sports in china sports are flourishing in

china now. more and more people are willing to take part in sports of different kinds, such as table-tennis, football, volleyball, and so on. every year there are many matches played on the city, provincial or national level. sports are no longer limited to a few professional players. early in the morning people may be seen doing exercise. martial arts (like chinese boxing or swordplay) which formerly were cultivated for self-defense, now have become a form of physical exercise and are practiced in parks, streets, gardens, or on campuses. in addition young and old people are also often seen running in order to build up their bodies. china promotes sports to enhance the physical condition of its people; she is formulating policies to provide encouragement of this activity. she awards prizes to the excellent players for the best records both in china and the world. in the world the chinese have become a strong people instead of “the weaklings of east asia”. 20.is failure a bad thing? failure is what often happens. it is everywhere in our life. students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions. although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. some people don’t think their failure is a very important thing at all. so they pay no attention to it. as a result, they will have the same failure a period later. some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought. other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. after hard work, they will be successful in the end. it is said that failure is the mother of success. success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures. in my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure. 21.modernization of family life with the rapid development of the society, family life is becoming modernized. years ago, people considered owing radios, sewing machines, watches and bicycles as being modernized. but in recent years, almost all families have tv sets, refrigerators and washing machines. it is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephones, computers and air-conditioners. the modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort. one may enjoy tv or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioners are running. and by car or motorcycle one ca

n quickly reach wherever he wants to go. in spite of this, these modern facilities also bring us disadvantages. for example, radiation from tv sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. the quietness of a family is often disturbed by a falsedialing or unwelcome phone call. but it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable. health and life as the saying goes, you don’t know what happiness is until you lose it’ you don’t know what health is until you are ill. “health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true. the negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. how many big plans are interrupted by bad health! even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee of health. how to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. regardless of all the different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. first, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body. 14. energy resources china is rich in various energy resources. coal and petroleum, for instance, are two major ones. they are essential in developing the country’s industry, science and technology. china has done a great deal in the past few decades to raise its output of coal and petroleum. three energy resources are being used up rapidly, with the building of four modernization, new industrial and science projects are springing up like bamboo shoots after rain. they are all big consumers of energy resources. besides there has been considerable waste in the utilization of these resources. to avoid an energy crisis in the future, the government must take certain measures. first, it should let people know the importance of saving energy. second, efforts should be made to develop new energy resources, such as solar energy, geothermal(地热) energy and so on. we have reason to be optimistic in this respect. 15. competition competition makes people original and creative. it very necessary to compete if human society wants to advance. (even animals compete for survival.) without it, we would become lazy and nobody would rake any responsibility. when three monks live together, there will be no drinking water. this chinese proverb vividly describes why china’s productivity was so low before mr deng came to power. at that time, we had the so-called planned economy. there was no compe

tition at all. so neither farmers nor workers worked hard. china was on the edge of collapse. competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. for example, in 100-meter race, each sportsman runs as quickly as possible, trying to win the champion. the same things happen in our society and in our daily life. if a company wants to surpass others, it must compete with them. it must raise its efficiency. all the companies doing this will no doubt benefit the whole society and the whole human race. being a student, i must compete with other students in our studies. i must study hard in all the fields so that i can be a useful man when i enter the society after graduation. 16.students’ part-time jobs there are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. for instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. it enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. as everything has two sides, the disadvantages can’t be ignored. part-time jobs cut into students’ study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca ‘t focus their attention on studying. in the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies. in my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. the most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it. 17.wealth and happiness everybody wants to get wealth. in today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person’s success and capability. many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. with money, they can but nice, large apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. wealth seems to bring all happiness in life. in my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. what money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. if you are kind enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. with it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will and to your own happiness. if you want money just for your own needs, you’ll never be satisfied or happy. in a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness. travelling it is exciting to visit different places. as you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. finally, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the l

ocal people. today people are so fond of travelling that tourism has become one of the faster growing industries in most countries. the main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. for example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. for another example, spending an annual holiday travelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. when people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder. travelling is also one of the best means for learning. you may have read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. seeing is believing. furthermore, if you area careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. no matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through travelling. the knowledge acquired from travel, as you will have found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book. 9. the world population explosion the human race has experienced a consistent increase in population since the beginning of its history. famine and disease have done little to offset(抵消)this steady increase. too many people are added annually to the population of the world. so both the causes of population increase and the results of having more people are worth careful study. culture evolution is the major factor responsible for population increase. early in human development, people invented tools to hunt animals. later they built shelters to protect themselves. step by step, they made life easier. as a result, fewer died from natural forces, such as harsh climate and disease. in the past, when population grew, there was unexplored territory to inhabit. but now, almost all the habitable land has been explored. the world’s population may reach 8.7 billion in 2033. it is clear that world population is a serious issue that needs careful attention. human beings are unique to solve problems through cultural evolution.(发展) facing the world population explosion in the near future. we must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world. 10. opening-door policy is the only way to make china strongmodern chinese history leads us to the conclusion that socialism, not capitalism is best for china. but how a socialist china should look at capitalism and more importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is of vital(至关) importance to the country. as far as our country’s economic construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of capitalism that is useful to us means we need to develop

foreign trade, introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign funds. it also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with(遵循) the law of mass production and a commodity economy. by opening our windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples and learn to make sensible judgments. absorbing the better part of the cultures of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist culture. so taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is the only way to make china strong. closing the county to international exchanges will only keep it weak. 11. choosing an occupation every one faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his life. an appropriate occupation makes a man work with zest(热情) and vigor, as well as contribute to his country. to make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. one is the interest, the other, the demands of people and society. only if the two aspects are connected, can a man show his talent and ability to the best advantage. if the two conflict, the former should be under the latter, for the people’s interests are more important than the individual’s. in regard to my choice in the future, i am fond of learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the open-door policy, exchange between home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus i’m determined to be a qualified interpreter. 12. the brain and the computer some recent developments in the computer industry make scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 20000. to understand the significance of this prediction let us compare the human brain with existing computers. the brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. the brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. as a result, the cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells. however, the computer consumes 1000,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. its million items of immediately accessible information. in contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere. in a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains. .on open policy the open policy means that our country is open to investment, trade and technical and economic cooperation with other countries on the basis of equality and mutual b

enefit. the purpose of open policy is to acquire advanced technology, management skills to serve our socialist construction so as to promote the realization of the four modernizations. we must adhere to the open policy. BECause economic relations between states today have become increasingly close, and no country can possibly advance behind close doors. only in this way, can we gradually close the gap between our country and the developed countries. through the implementation of policy, we can learn advanced technology and managerial expertise from abroad; make full use of the foreign capitals to set up great enterprises; absorb useful and healthy ideas and new knowledge of the modern civilization; and broaden our views and raise our level of competence. 2. the place of science and technology in modern life. human life can not continue without science and technology. for many years, human society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the development of science and technology has in turn brought the process to mankind. so the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our fore fathers. the development of science and technology have brought about many changes in people’s life. for example, the invention of television and space rocket have opened a new era for mankind. through the use of tv people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man’s landing on the moon has now come true. science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. we may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. without the base, the skyscraper can’t be built. therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country. 3. importance of education china, as a developing country, is determined to catch up with and even surpass the developed ones. i think that one of the best possible ways to do so is to give first priority(优先)to the development of culture, science and especially education. in modern times, when science and technology are making great progress, the education of the work force is of primary importance. moreover, many of the success in advanced countries have demonstrated that a nation ’s prosperity mainly depends on the quality of its labour force, namely those who have been well educated. in a developing country such as china, our investment in culture, education and science, and especially elementary education, must enjoy top priority. this is crucial(决定性的)for china to catch up with the developed nations in today’s surging(汹涌的) waves of technological revolution. otherwise, the gap between china and advanced countries will be widened rath

er than bridged. 4. air pollution air pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world. a great deal of energy is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. automobile, trains, planes and busses need energy, too. nearly all of this energy is produced by burning fuels. the burning produces wastes, some of which remain in the air, causing air pollution. scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution especially in big industrial areas and densely-populated cities. they are studying new ways of generating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. in the meantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less polluted material. also, engineers try to design and locate new power plants to do minimum damage to the environment. however, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have a "clean" world. nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and control air pollution. there indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalists will be required to do. people will continually find new ways to control pollution. environmental protection today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. the world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. we are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. if we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive. concerned people have made some progress in environmental protection. governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to stop environmental pollution. still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. people should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存) our natural resources and recycle(再循环) our products. we are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future. 6. automobiles automobiles, as a product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. industry needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation. every day, automobiles drive people to and from work. on weekends automobiles take families for joyful outings. and during holiday seasons, automobiles fill the highways everywhere, even in remote areas. it could be said that the wheels of automobiles move society forward. but automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. for example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. they create a lot of noise and traffic accidents which disable(伤残) or kill many people each year. worst of all perhaps is the air pollution caused by the exhaust gases produced by automobiles. some of the gases are highly toxic(有毒的) and a serious health hazard. 7. computer

the computer is widely used in all fields of society. today, wherever you go, you will find computers being used. for example, computers are used in universities, large corporations, and small Offices, etc. it has even entered the homes of ordinary people. as it is able to store and process a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life. computers can help people in different ways. for example, computer help scientists in analyzing data and doing complex calculation. for another example, computers are made use of by engineers in designing a plane, or a spaceship. besides, computers may also play a great role in helping children with their lesson. whatever you are doing, you many find computer a useful aid. however, the computer must be designed and instructed by man. what is more, it is true that computers can make decisions, but they need detailed instructions and programs prepared by humans to operate. therefore, the computer can never replace the human brain.投诉信 directions: you live in a room in college which you share with another student. you find it very difficult to work there because your roommate always has friends visiting. write a letter to the accommodation Officer at the college.1、要求下学期换一个新房间,2、解释原因,3、要求单间。dear sir or madam, i am writing to inform you that i wish to move into a new room next semester. i would prefer a single room, as i find the present sharing arrangement inconvenient.i must explain that the reason for my dissatisfaction is my roommate‘s inconsiderate behavior. for one thing, his friends are constantly visiting him; for another, he regularly holds noisy parties. in these circumstances, i find it difficult to concentrate on my studies, and i am falling behind in my assignments. i am sure you will agree that the only solution is for me to move into a room of my own. therefore, i would be grateful if you could find a single room for me, preferably not in the same building but as near to the college campus as possible.yours sincerely,li ming9、致辞 directions: write a speech on the opening of a conference of no less than 120 words. in your speech, you should:1、进行自我介绍,2、详细介绍大会内容,3、结束语。 good morning, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to beijing! to begin with, i would like to make a brief introduction to myself. i am the president of motorola (china) electronics ltd. the following is my introduction to the conference. first, it is my great honor to be here with all of you and declare open the conference of international trade cooperation. second, on behalf of our company, i would like to express my heartfelt welcome to all the guests and delegates. last, i believe our cooperative effo

Generally peaking, it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhil

e. in the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have. furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is conducive to the growth of adolescents.2、就业 Directions: for this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic jobs for graduates. you should write at least 120 words and base your composition on the outline below:1、大学生难找工作,2、原因很多,3、解决的办法。 Job hunting has always been a headache for college students. though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation. The reasons for this phenomenon are various. on the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. on the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country. I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. first, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. second, students‘ attitude towards employment should be changed. they should go to small cities and country. there they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. in a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.3、网络 Directions: for this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic internet. you should write at least 120 words and base your composition on the outline below:1、互联网使用的现状,2、大学生是否应该使用互联网,人们的看法不同,3、我的看法。 In recent years, people are developing an inseparable relationship with internet. as is known to all, it is convenient for us to click the mouse when surfing on line, either to entertain ourselves or to meet the work‘s needs. On the one hand, no one denies that internet is currently one of the most useful media in our daily life. as a college student, i get on line every day to exchange information through e-mails with my net friends. but on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too much addicted to internet to maintain a regular and wholesome lifestyle. Thus,it is necessary for us to use internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence. after all, internet is invented to enrich our life, and to improve the efficiency of our work rather than shackle us with a chain. 4、考试 Directions: for this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic my views on examinations. you should write at least 120 words a

nd base your composition on the outline below:1、大学都用考试来衡量学生的成绩,2、考生可能带来的副作用,3、我对考试的看法。 In most colleges and universities the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous. To begin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching. since teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. no subjects can be taught successfully merely through being approached with intent to take examinations. in addition, the most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. as the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively. In fact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students academic development. if that is the case, why cannot we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examinations?就像植物需要阳光,我们对知识充满了渴求。学习伴随我们成长,让我们感到充实,让我们更加了解生活,让我们能够用所学去帮助别人。你的学习旅程是怎样的? Learning: a Lifelong Career As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind.①Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment.② Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and reliable warrant of success in times of uncertainty. Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world changing so fast, to cease learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What’ s worse, the animal instinct dormant deep in our sub-conscious will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideas, undermining our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization.③ Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.演讲之前感到些许紧张是自然的,这表明你渴望把事情做好。不过,过度紧张会适得其反。本文将向你介绍一些控制紧张情绪,进而使演讲达

到预期效果的方法。 10 Tips for Successful Public Speaking Know the room. Be familiar with the place in which you will speak.① Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practise using the microphone and any visual aids. Know the audience. Greet some of the audience as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers. Know your material. If you’re not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. Practise your speech and revise it if necessary. Relax. Ease tension by doing exercises. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. When you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining. They don’t want you to fail. Don’t apologize. If you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audience’s attention to something they hadn’t noticed. Keep silent.② Concentrate on the message — not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties, and outwardly toward your message and your audience. Your nervousness will dissipate. Turn nervousness into positive energy. Harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm.③ Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need. Search Your Own Treasure Look up to the heavens and imagine the stars and planets are sparkling jewels dancing across the night sky. Your potential is like those jewels with a dazzling array of facets. Put another way, your human potential is virtually unlimited.① Problems arise from a perspective that “potential is a taboo or code word for failure.” It is for fear of failure that we are sometimes afraid to try new things. Realizing that we will not become an instant expert, we sometimes choose to cop out and not

even make an attempt to be or try something new.② Perhaps worse yet, sometimes perfunctory efforts are made, unsatisfactory results are obtained, and an “I knew I couldn’t do it and I know I can’t do it” attitude is reinforced and seemingly justified. Refresh yourself from the perspective that so-called “mistakes” do not constitute failure; they are only new lessons to be learned. Failure is really giving up and quitting, as juxtaposed to persevering and persisting. There is universal law that states, “Practice precedes excellence.” Myth and history are filled with stories of individuals who had struggled against all odds and obstacles and just kept after what they truly wanted until they reached their goals successfully. Naturally, we all have our limitations, and prudence dictates that we respect them. However, wisdom encourages us to stretch beyond and transcend our limitations. Keep going on,your treasure is waiting for you.

Be YourSelf In every school a “top” crowd sets the pace, while the others follow their lead.①Let’s say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Pretty soon everybody is wearing a bright red sweater. There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that on some people a bright red sweater is extremely unbecoming. The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are endangering their lives. They are like the sheep being led to the butcher. Now, chances are that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life; chances are that one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, “Gee, the crowd does it.” Well, let the crowd do it, but don’t do it yourself. Learn to say, “No.” Develop your own standards and your own judgment. If you know the crowd is planning something you disagree with, have the courage to bow out politely.② You’ll have the satisfaction of standing on your own two feet.③ Remember this in your heart, you are the unique one in the world, just be yourself. Develop your own standards and your own judgment.。

With Roddy setting the pace, the boys went uphill and arrived with bursting lungs.罗迪一马当先,男孩们便向山坡上狂奔,到终点时肺都要炸了。 ②【注释】bow out 从容引退 【临摹】Their football team bowed out of the competition with unknown reasons. 不知道为什么,他们的足球队退出了比赛。 ③【注释】standing on one’s own two feet. 独立自主,自立 【临摹】My uncle offered to help me, but I told him I would rather stand on my own feet.我叔叔提出要帮助我,但我告诉他我宁愿自力更生。 思如泉涌 Towering genius disdains a beaten path. His illness was diagnosed as leukemia. He has been fighting bravely against this deadly disease in hospital for nearly a month. Li Ming entered our university two years ago and he performed quite well in various fields and has left good impression on people around him. He was once awarded the first prize scholarship and praised by the university for his efforts in helping a child escape a traffic accident last term. He has won deep respect from his friends, classmates and teachers by virtue of his diligence, kindness and optimistic attitudes toward life. However, the huge expenditure on this disease has quickly exhausted the poor savings of his family. He was born in a small village in Shanxi province, and the total income of his parents cannot exceed 6000 Yuan a year. In addition, his parents has to support his grandparents who have been sick for many years. My fellow friends, “blood is thicker than water”. Many countries have made English taught as the second language in schools. But why do students need English? If they do need, what do they need it for? A survey made by a teacher at a university answers the two questions. The result of the survey suggests that almost all students need English and they need it for different purposes. Most of the student learn English because they need to read English textbooks or journals and attend English lectures, while only a few students need to use it to talks to English-speaking visitors, attend seminars, write letters, etc. There are also some differences between economics students and engineering students: Compared with engineering students, more economics students need to read English business and to write reports in English. From the results of the survey, we can see that students learn English different purposes, which varies with different students. Whatever the purposes are, one thing is certain: Students need English, and English teaching should be strengthened in universities.开阔的心胸(An Open Heart) My aunt Edith was a widow of 50, working as a secretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very serious heart ailment.Aunt Edith doesn accept defeat easily. She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. HE had saved the life of someone with the same ailment. The article said Dr. DeBakey fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years, her little-girl dream of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn a word of self-pity---only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud: our beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no charge for either the hospital or the operation. Signedichael DeBakey. That was seven years ago. Since then, Aunt Edith has been around the world. Her th

ree children are happily married. For her age, she is one of the youngest, most alive people I know----all because of an open heart surgeon who knew how to honor of his profession, and how to open his own heart.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Campus Life. Now the dream has come true. But how do we college students like our campus life?Certainly, some relish it, finding it colorful and rewarding. Besides study, they spend considerable amount of time improving themselves in various aspect. Yet others do not think much of their college life, thus do not benefit as much. In their eyes, the university is just a bigger high school. The only difference is that they have more time at their disposal without parents looking over their shoulder. As to me, college life is ideal if only I have abundant books to read, some bosom friends to keep me company, a couple of conscientious professors to instruct me, and an easy access to the Internet.Directions: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic City Problems. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, sanitation, education, employment and so on. City services and facilities have been strained to a breaking point. Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air mercilessly polluted. What is more, the city is also threatened by rising crime. Not a single day passes without the report of someone being robbed, kidnapped or murdered. Last but not least, city-dwellers are not only separated from the natural world but also isolated from each other, even not knowing the name of their next-door neighbor. All these problems have harmed the attractiveness of the city. Unless there is some improvement, more and more people may seek to live in the suburbs. The Discomfort of SilenceMany Americans find silence uncomfortable. They will murmur on to fill any quietness if it extends for more than a moment. Students often study with their radios singing;housewives leave televisions on for the

companionship of sound even though they may be working in some other room. If you are silent for long periods, they will do their best to draw you out or will ask if you feel all right or if there is anything that they can do to help you. Sometimes silence can be puzzling, however; if Americans disagree with what you are saying, many of them will remain quiet. This may not suggest agreement; often it only means that they consider it impolite to argue further. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic My Opinion on Advertisement. You should write at least 120 words and you should base your composition on the outline below:Some people hold the idea that the advertisement is a necessary evil in modern life. What do you think? My Opinion on AdvertisementAs is known to all, angels and evils are poles apart. But is there anything that combines the two perfectly? Some there is-the advertisement. With the growing influence of mass media, advertising invades every aspect of our lives. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper, open the mailbox, or surf on the Internet, advertisements would immediately jump into our sight. As they make things so attractive, we often end up buying things that we do not really need. Advertising not only adds to the price of the goods, thus harming the consumer's interest, but also imposes a kind of materialistic value upon the audience. But that is only part of the story-advertisements are informative as well as persuasive. They provide us with up-to-date information about the latest products. Some advertisements are so elegantly presented that we are inspired or even moved. No matter it is an evil or an angel, advertisement has become an indispensable part of our modern life.Private Tutoring1.为孩子聘请家教目前非常普遍2.家教的利与弊3.我的看法Private tutoring is “in”.A recent investigation shows that about 80 percent of pupils have private tutors,Such a popular practice indicates that people are attaching greater importance to education. Many parents, for various reasons, missed the chance of obtaining a good education. when their children meet with difficulties in study, they arc helpless, Private tutoring is the only solution. As private tutoring is usually one-to-one, t

he teacher knows the strong points as we11 as the weak points of the pupil, clearly. However, private tutoring has its own disadvantages, for one thing, it takes up so much of the pupils’ time that they can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment, which are essential for their physical and mental health. For another, some teachers, busy“shuttling” from one family to another, tend to neglect their regular teaching duties. What’s more, some teachers are eager to help pupils do well in the test, offering the so-ca11ed tips for test-taking Father than help them acquire what is more meaningful.Generally speaking, its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of the pupils’ potentials. Only in this way can we generation be healthily brought up.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: What does friendship mean? You should write at least 120 words and you shouldbase your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:1.友谊是人生永恒的主题2.友谊到底意味着什么3..友谊的重要性。What does friendship mean? There is no definite answer. An eternal theme in literature, friendship is also indispensable in daily life. Friendship is to our life what salt is to dishes. When you are happy, friendship is just like adding flowers on the brocade; when you are sad, friendship is a dose of consolation; if you are in trouble, friends will surround you and remove the barriers for you; if you have a hard nut to crack, you can turn to friends for help. We admire the great friendship between Marx and Engel, which firmly combined them and pushed them forward on the road to exploring and fulfilling Communism.Friendship isn't almighty, but no one can live happily without it.独生子女面临大学生活的挑战 Now more and more sons and daughters from one-child families are attending universities. They distinguish themselves as a new social group. This new generation have obvious advantages since they are brought up in favorable family circumstances. But there also exist some weaknesses in the way they think, behave, in their sentiments and in their characters. Though most of these college students are intelligent and fond of study, some are comparatively less capable of handling their social and living affairs. When they meet something unexpected, they don’t know how to solve it. Some, even phone home to ask what to do each time they run into any problem. They feel weak at knowing how to conduct themselves in college for this is the first time for them to live independently. I think we should not blame all this on them. It is not their own faults to be like this because they’re inevitable products of certain times. We should sincerely help them be aware of their shortc

oming and adjust themselves to college life and to the society. Overseas Study at an Early Age1.目前很多父母在孩子高中毕业前就总他们出国学习2.导致这种趋势的原因是什么3.我对此的看法 Nowadays more and more parents are eager to send their children to study abroad before they finish high school by whatever means and at whatever cost.It is quite understandable for parents to send their children to study overseas because they place high expectations on their children. They are encouraged by the success stories of those who have completed their overseas study. With the development of economy, companies and institutions at home are giving more and more emphasis on overseas experiences, too. Consequently, pursuing overseas study became a kind of short cut in gaining a better future. Moreover, there is still one underlying reason for this rush-economic reason. The rapid economic progress in the past few years in China has enabled more and more parents to afford the huge cost for their children’s overseas study. As for me, overseas study is surely a helpful way to get both advanced knowledge and necessary experiences, but overseas study at an early age is neither necessary nor benef1cial. The students may be too young to either tend for themselves or think for themselves. I do think that overseas study can contribute to one’s self-improvement, but it’s better to be pursued after one has finished his college study at home, when he is more capable of learning and living on his own.Direction: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Cars and Air Pollution. Besides congestion, accidents and fast fuel consumption, cars are responsible for a good part of air pollution in big cities. All the time, they are pumping huge amounts of waste gases into the atmosphere. These gases are very harmful, causing disease and even death. One possible solution is to design and develop clean cars and clean fuels. In Shanghai, some of the public buses begin to run on natural gas, which does not give off as much carbon dioxide as the petrol. But it may take decades for the new models of clean cars completely replace the traditional ones.Another solution is to develop modern public transportation systems and restrict the use of private cars. If the price of petrol rises constantly and the public vehicles are efficient and convenient enough, most people will not buy private cars. And the total number of cars in big cities will reduce greatly. On the whole, the elimination of air pollution needs the collective efforts from the government, the publi

Frankly, it seems to me that our space projects so far have been in the main a waste of money, time, energy, human lives and resources. The richer countries are pouring large sums of money into space research programs which are of no benefit to human beings while in underdeveloped countries thousands of people are dying of hunger. Besides, many scientists’ time and energy are wasted, which could have been devoted to improving our living condition. What’s more, many astronauts have died complete1y uselessly in space vehicles which have been faulty. They were young people who hadn’t enjoyed the fruit of life yet.Apart from human wastage, there is the wastage of resources which are finite and essential if man is to survive. I think it’s high time we stopped these meaningless programs.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic: Something I admire about the Western Culture. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below :1.Is there anything in the Western culture you admire?2.What is it (are they) and why do you like it (them)?Something I Admire about the Western CultureDespite the cultural conflicts between the Orient and the Occident, there do exist some admirable ingredients in the Western culture.First and foremost, the equality between parents and children. The parents are not always superior to their children, and the children do not always need to obey their parents order, that is, they are more like close friends.Second, the independent personality. Western people have a strong sense of supporting themselves and being independent. They begin earning their pocket money early in their life, even as kids.Last, Western people do not always assess a person according to his background. If only he can achieve success through personal struggle, he can win status. It's a talent-oriented society, not background-oriented.All the above mentioned are what I admire in the western culture and what I think we Chinese should learn. My View on the income Gap 1.收入差距悬殊是当前社会的一种现象 2.人们对之褒贬不一 3.我的看法Now the income gap is getting wider and wider. In some privately owned firms, joint-ventures, or foreign-funded companies , an executive’s yearly income is ten times or even a hundred times as much as an ordinary worker’sFaced with this situation, people will undoubtedly have different opinions. Some believe that it benefits the social and economic development since driving force is often derived from the gap. In other words , the gap inspires people and gives a push to advancemen

t. Other speak of its side effect: income gap is often the root of social unrest and also contrary to our country’s principle. From my point of view, while it is true that the income may stimulate the social development to some extent, it causes trouble as well. An income gap that is too wide for most people to bear can neither contribute to the stability of a country nor promote its economic development. Therefore , while we are advocating the rapid development of our country , we should tolerate the narrow income gap but narrow the wide one.
