Along with the step of globalization, most students’ attention has shifted from Chinese to foreign cultures. Such a shift brought on great worries among people because it is not good for the development of Chinese culture.

There may be several reasons account for why this phenomenon could happen. First and foremost, the globalization greatly stimulated the spread of foreign cultures, which in turn stirred great interest among Chinese students; second, college students are, to some extent, forced to study certain foreign languages so as to pass exams or find good jobs so that they could not spare any time to study Chinese; last but not least, schools have no strict demand on students’ Chinese standard. No doubt, neglecting the study of Chinese will ultimately hold back the development of Chinese culture, and Chinese people may lose their cultural identity in such a competitive world. In order change this situation and save our identity, due attention should be given to the study of Chinese. To begin with, government should put great efforts on the development of Chinese culture to make more people proud of it; besides, colleges and universities should make exams more balanced, not simply emphasizing the importance of foreign languages; finally, schools should also attach great importance to the study of Chinese, making it a compulsory curriculum. Through these efforts, I think, chances of changing this phenomenon are prosperous.

As is shown in the table/chart/curve, the number of Chinese people traveling abroad increased from … million in 2001 to … million in 2002 and to … million in 2003. Apparently, the number of Chinese travelers abroad has been on a dramatic rise in recent years.

What accounts for the increase? In my opinion, at least three factors contribute to the changes. To begin with, the changes are closely related to the rising income of the Chinese. With their living standards steadily going up, they have adequate extra money to afford leisure activities like travel. More importantly, the changes have a lot to do with the turning of the people’s attitudes towards and outlook on life. They have begun to try every means to enjoy their life. Finally, the changes are enhanced and promoted by the government’s bettering policy in the tourism field.

Now it is possible for people to leave the country for business or tourism. With the development of society, the increasing trend is bound to continue. As far as I am concerned, it’s a good sign and should be promoted since it brings benefits not only to people but to the development of the country. (198 words)

We can fully believe that our combined efforts will reap rewards.

A clean cyberspace will paint our lives more colorfully. An economically booming and technologically advanced global web will play a vital role in the national economic and cultural advancement.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic

The urban traffic is getting increasingly crowded nowadays in China.

The roads are packed with cars, bicycles and pedestrians and traffic jams, bus delays and traffic accidents are a common scene.

Then how to solve this problem? Some suggest to lay down more roads to make the traffic less crowded and speed up the flow of traffic. Others believe that we should open up more public bus routes, so that more people will take the public buses instead of travelling by cars and bicycles. Though above two views sound reasonable, they have their own drawbacks. The former may take up much land which could be used for farms and houses. The latter may cause inconvenience for those who are used to travelling by car or bicycles. I think the best answer to the traffic problem is a combination of the two. More roads can be built to hold more traffic and meanwhile more public bus routes can be opened up to those who prefer to use the public transportation.

How to Solve the Housing Problem in Big Cities

The shortage of housing is one of the most serious problems facing many big cities in China. Though the government has spent a large sum of money on housing, the investment has produced little financial return and a housing shortage still persists. Two generations sharing one room and newly-married couples finding it difficult to have a house of their own are still common cases. Housing shortage is a problem that requires and urgent solution.

People's attitudes towards the solution to the housing problem are different. Some suggest to build more high-rise apartments; others believe to develop underground housing areas. I am in favour of the former opinion. For one thing, it is cheaper to build above ground than below. For another, living underground for a long time will do harm to people's health. Above all, people are unwilling to live underground with

artificial lighting and they prefer to live above ground to enjoy the sunshine.

Although there may be some other ways to solve the housing shortage

problem, I believe to build more high-rise apartments is one of the promising solutions to the housing problem.

Nowadays, more and more people are using mobile phones. In the street, on a bus, in a restaurant, actually in every other public places, you can hear someone speaking with a mobile phone. Many college students have bought mobile phones, too.

When you are out and you need to contact someone urgently, a mobile phone will enable you to do this if there is no telephone box nearby. A beeper is not always sufficient for your purposes. The Prevalence of Western Holidays

It is noticeable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while Chinese traditional holidays are being somewhat

neglected. Old people often complain that Chinese New Year has lost its real meaning. To their astonishment, young people in China who are ignorant about Chinese traditional holidays are crazy about Christmas or Valentine’s Day.

There are several possible reasons for this phenomenon. First, western nations, such as the United States and Britain, are powerful and dominant in every aspect. Everything in these countries is assumed to be superior and adored by some modern young people. Second, the prevalence of English as a world language and the development of globalization enable western culture to prevail in China. Overwhelmed by such a trend, Chinese

unconsciously get involved in western culture. Last but not least, some Chinese people have blind faith in foreign things while miss our own possessions with contempt.

I am critical of this trend. China boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. In modern times, Chinese tradition should be preserved and promoted. But it seems that young people no longer treasure the traditions. On the contrary, they turn to pursue enthusiastically a supposedly more modern culture. If this trend is allowed to continue, the priceless heritage of our ancestors will be replaced by western traditions. Nobody expects such a consequence. So let’s join hand in hand to protect Chinese tradition, especially traditional holidays.

Only Stricter Traffic Laws Can Prevent Accidents

Though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we cites the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly mutilated each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.

It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering

wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year olds and utterly selfish.

The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy traffic; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.

It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate.

Dear victims,

On the 12 of May in 2008, an incredible and unknown earthquake suddenly happened in Wenchuan, Sichuan province. Almost half of China was affected. It was a huge calamity to Chinese people.

Until now, there are nearly 50 thousand people who died in this earthquake and more people injured. Many people lost their relatives and fell into the deep sorrow. And they also lost their homes and hometowns. A large number of buildings were damaged. What’s more, many children and students lost their lives because of the collapse of schools. And their parents who suffer from this big calamity can’t accept the fact until now.

All of the Chinese people begin to act and do everything they can when they hear the news. Almost every one of us contributes a great number of money and goods which people in Sichuan need. As students, we don’t have

enough money to donate, but we should do all that we could do. What’s more important, we consider that we can help Sichuan people rebuilt and their home and live happily.
