PracticeSummary

To be honest, the internship in Yangshuo was the most interesting and fulfilled one during my two academic years, not only because of its gorgeous landscapes, but also because of its platform for us to communicate with foreigners, which broadened my horizon, meanwhile, provided more information about foreigners. What’s more, it helped me find my own shortcomings and aroused my passion of learning professionally.

After almost 8 hours train trip, on July6, we finally arrived Guilin railway station. Though hungry and tired, when on bus to our final destination, I saw endless green mountains and smelt scents of the grass and wild flowers through the bus window. After setting in the hotel, we traveled many word-famous scenic spots, such as Moon Hill, The Big Banyan Tree and Golden Water Cave, which were marvelous masterpieces of nature and resources of local residents.

What impressed me most in scenic spots was that people gave emphasis to environmental protection. When traveling the Golden Water Cave, we were prohibited to break off the stalactites, because all the stalactites were non-renewable. Likewise, the Big Banyan Tree was surrounded by fence, so travelers can only stand outside the fence and appreciated the tree in the distance, for the tree was too old and weak.

Additionally, there was special scenery thatalmost all the scenic spots or shops were equipped with bilingual signs, though most of them contained some mistakes in translation. While traveling these bilingual signs, we took photos and when we came back to school, we analyzed them in grammatical constructions and expression effects and corrected them in my own way. After finished that, Irealized the importance of translationfrom Chinese to English, and pay more attention to my expression in English.

What’s more, what astonished me a lot was that almost all the people, especially shop assistants were fluent in English. When we were talking with foreigners, a grannyinterrupted us and asked foreign friends to drift by bamboo raft with fluent

English. And she looked down us for that our English was poorer than her.In my view,

Yangshuo is an incredibly beautiful place whichis well known for its incredible karst scenery, beautiful mountains, rivers, caves, and temples as well as its laid back cafes and bars. Therefore, there was never shortage of foreign travelers, such as American, Danes and Dutch. That was why many people even old adults can speak English fluently. They were so lucky that they were in a circumstance full of English. As English majors, we had best grasp every opportunity to practice English.

Last but not least, we communicated with 10 foreigners who were from different countries, such as American, Dutch, France and Danmark. At first, when meeting foreigners, I was too shy to open my mouth. After seeing a friend talked with a French girl in fine fettle, I plucked up to say hello to an American girl as old as me who was as beautiful as a fairy. We talked about many aspects concerned study, travel and TV shows. Although I expressed myself in disorder, she can also understand me and listened to me patiently. We exchanged our favorite TV programs such as The Vampire Diariesand Desperate Housewives. It was a pity that I forgot to ask her for contact information. Anyway, it was an amazing experience. Then, I was full of confidence when meeting foreigners. Sometimes, when talking with foreigners, I had to look up phrases to express myself, however, they didn’t care about that, and talked with me happily.

During this short period, I really broadened my horizon and enriched mylife experiences. What’s more, I was aware of my shortage of leaning English, that was, lack of practicing. Lack of oral English practicing leaded to uncertainty about my speaking skills. Uncertainty leaded to lack of confidence and lack of confidence causedme to be quiet even when I didhave the precious opportunity to practice speaking English. While travelling to Yangshuo did give me a chance to practice my oral English. After communicating with differentforeigners, I felt more confidence about saying English. Practice makes perfect. I would keep practicing in my following study professionally.
