Oh ,captain ,my captain!
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may/Old time is still a-flying/And this same flowers that smiles today/Tomorrow will be dying
Because believe or not, each one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold and die. I'd like you to step forward of you and peruse some of the faces from the past. They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones. Just like you. Invincible just like you fell. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you; their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentleman, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? Carpe...hear it? Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day, boys, make your lives extraordinary.
To fully understand poetry, we must first be fluent with its meter, rhyme and figures of speech, then ask two questions: 1) How artfully has the objective of the poem been rendered and 2) How important is that objective?
We're not laying pipe.
Only in their dreams can men be truly free.
Learn to think for yourselves again. No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.
We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering -- these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love -- these are what we stay alive for.
The Dead Poets was dedicated to "sucking the marrow out of life".
We weren't a Greek organization. We were Romantics. We didn't just read poetry; we let it drip from our tongues like honey. Spirits soared, women swooned and gods were created.
I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. To put to rout all that was not life, and not, when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived.
(Alfred Lord Tennyson)Come my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world for my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset. And though we are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;-- One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will. To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
I could not turn from their revel in derision. Then I saw the Congo creeping through the black, cutting through the forest with a golden track.
语言的目的只有一个:交流(学生)追求女人(老师)language was developed for one endeavor, and that is? To communicate...No, to woo women.
We must constantly look at things in a different way.
just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try! Now, when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks. Consider what you think.
Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all.
Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.(Thoreau)Don't be resigned to that. Break out! Don't just walk off the edge like lemmings.
For me, sport is actually a chance for us to have other human beings push us to excel.
Oh to struggle against great odds. To meet enemies undaunted.
To be a sailor of the world, bound for all ports.
Oh, I live to be the ruler of life, not a slave.
To mount the scaffolds. To advance to the muzzle of guns with perfect nonchalance.
To dance, clap hands, exalt, shout, skip, roll on, float on.
Oh, to have life henceforth the poem of new joys.
To indeed be a god!
I see a sweetness in her smile. Blight light shines from her eyes. But life is complete; contentment is mine, Just knowing that... just knowing that she's alive.
Sometimes the most beautiful poetry can be about simple things. Just don't let your poems be ordinary.
I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world.
I close my eyes. this image floats beside me.
A sweaty-toothed madman with a stare that pounds my brain.
His hands reach out and choke me.
他一直在念叨真理all the time he's mumbling. Truth.
Truth is like, like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold. You push it, stretch it, it'll never be enough.
You kick at it, beat it, it'll never cover any of us. From the moment we enter crying to the moment we leave dying, it will just cover your face as you wail and cry and scream.
the difficulty in maintaining your own beliefs in the face of others.
we all have a great need for acceptance. But you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular, even though the herd may go.
I want you to find your own walk right now. Your own way of striding, pacing. Any direction. Anything you want. Whether it's proud, whether it's silly, anything. Gentlemen, the courtyard is yours.
You don't have to perform. Just make it for yourself.
Swim against the stream.
,a_o!I4i_q_^_M_q!d0|_R_~
Chinglish:This cake is so delicious, please eat a little.
Revision: The cake is so delicious. Please try some.
太傻超级论坛-\)E_S S_u r_E ~_H_C$J_O_F&l_\_f0@
Chinglish: It won't do. Please see it again.
Revision: It won't do. Please try again.
Chinglish: I did one or two times, but I failed.
Revision: I tried a couple of times, but I failed.
Revsion: Don't worry, I'll try my best.
太傻超级论坛$h_e_x_z_u z_S _rChinglish: Please put down your heart. I'll give all my strength out.$H(`.S_B
This skirt looks so beautiful. Would you please try it? .v,r:\_d U_Y
————————————
So, Please try this word more often.
Enjoy
如:_m"i"d_?"u!@_F.E$t$\
In Africa, Botswana is one of the few countries which enjoys a good reputation for corruption control and the DCEC has attracted favourable attention from analysts, donors and Botswana's regional neighbours.
UN conference to study why women in war-torn States sufferjustice deficit.`$
Available
Chinglish: Sorry, we have no seats now.
Revision: Sorry, no seats available.
Chinglish: This website can't be visited temporarily.
Revision: Website Temporarily Unavailable.
有时候尽管不是非用available/unavailable不可,但是多用一些,看起来正宗。 要学习例句,google.com里多得是。
Surprise
My boyfriend has come to see me. It's really a big surprise!
8A$t_`_K0F+s!E#R
To this veteran teacher, it's one surprise after another.
Chinglish:How to improve our English level? (他们一般不这么说,但是应该可以看懂) Revision :How to improve our English skills?
Chinglish:His writing and translating level are very high.
Revision:He has very good writing and translation skills.
什么English skills, computer skills, study skills, survival skills, writing skills...
Offer
Chinglish:Thank you for your goodwill, but I can go home on foot.
Revision: Thanks for your offer, but I can walk home.
8S_a/l_F/o/O!k$N;n_2D%};['QA Qj'K
0i"S4R,d*x-Fc"k_[version 1:People from all over the country all giving their hands to the disaster area.

Alt Version: People from all over the country are offering helping hands to the disaster area.
version 1: He gave me a job to do. 8I_J_o_x/V*[_S8j-f4J-
Better version: He offered me a job.
k1Q J_S%J_q
This is my last offer to you. Take it or leave it.
Difference
Chinglish: Please use this kind of cosmetics, the effect is absolutely different.
Revision: Please try this sort of cosmetics, i bet it'll make a big difference.
Chinglish:God, please give me a chance again, I won't do this again.太傻超级论坛_N#y5_H!G!_Z_`4u_M9V_r You're talking about Telecom and Unicom. The way I see it, they make no differences at all.
Revision: God, please grant me another chance, and I'll make a difference.
differ from这个动词形式更简单,try it, and you'll make a difference,让你的老师、同学对你刮目相看。
在google.com中,make a difference这一短语搜索结果近600万,所以以后有条件,我们就要make a difference,没有条件时,创建条件也要make a difference。
第八词 point
pointless(没意义)一词也算它一伙的。
Chinglish: What is your meaning in doing this?
Revision: What's your point?
Chinglish: If you smoke, you should not be afraid to get lung cancer. It's meaningless to ask "why did God do this to me?". (注:meaningless可用,但是老外不爱用,爱用的是我们) Revision: If you smoke, you should be prepared to get lung cancer; it's pointless toask "why did God do this to me?".GRE,TOEFL,SAT,IELTS,GMAT,visa,USA,留学签证申请美国英国加拿大欧洲%I_R a *y&s/Y_E_B-T_~,
Access
Chinglish: I can't go on internet here. (老外还以为是你有事、或这里不适合而不能上网) Revision: I can't access the web/the internet here.
Chinglish: My god! I can't open my mail box today!
Revision: My god! I can't access my mail box today!
Sense
这几个短语分别是: a sense of (responsibility, humor...)---有幽默感等, make sense/not make any sense,有意义,没意义(所以我说别老用meaningless,不是人家听不懂,那很中式的)。
Chinglish: I very like him. He is very humorous.

-P#|#a*W9m'|_#C_|_y7R_F_U太傻超级论坛!_2l_K9V_I6t Revision: I know, but again at some point it doesn't make any sense.
What? at least 6 weeks? Does it make any sense?(或what's your point?)
Afford
I'm willing to afford it。
I'm willing to pay, but I really can't afford it,-O
Chinglish: This hat is extremely expensive, I can't buy it.
Revision: This hat is so expensive that I can't afford it.
Chinglish: Lots of kids can't go to school because they're poor. (意思表达出来了但是不精练) Revision: Plenty of kids in this village can't afford to go to school (can't afford education). _?_M_[7l-n_l8~8}
Chinglish: Sorry, I can't play with you.&G_A-k_J:q,@*P
Revision: I can't afford to play 'games' with you, sorry.
I can't afford to lose my job, because I'm the bread-winner and I have a big family to support.
Deserve
Chinglish: You're like a rat teasing a cat...
_e(k_j_Z$g"p Revision: I think you're playing with fire. You deserve it!
Chinglish: That good-hearted girl was married to the man in her heart at last. She was good so she had a good end.
Revision: That good-hearted girl married her 'prince' finally. She deserved it.
Chinglish: How dare you do this to me? Do you want me to beat you?
Revision: How dare you do this to me? You deserve a kick in the ass!

第十三词 Frustrated Z%b M ^2M%U(?GRE,TOEFL,SAT,IELTS,GMAT,visa,USA,留学签证申请美国英国加拿大欧洲_z'c'M If you think that I deserve some applauses or flowers, why not let me know about it.

If, if lots of people come and shout to me:"Coolmax, your English is so poor and limited!" I'll be extremely frustrated.
Indifferent

I promise I won't make this kind of mistakes again!
Hurt

Mislead
'y'x1F!D.m_m.n_v$t*c
Haven't you realized this newspaper is misleading its readers?

So, my only wish reagarding this thread is that I'm not misleading.
Offend
被动是be/get offended.
例句:_x_H:@_~)O_j_I_W_l5B_R5|$h&M r3C w

Revision: Have I ever offended her? She's just being so weird!
Sometimes, when we are commenting on others or their work, we should know what we're talking about and we should be as polite as possible, so that they won't get offended.
Update
Chinglish: Where is the new one?(不算太中式,但是中国学生会用update会让人刮目相看) Revision: Where's the update?

Challenge
Revision: This task is very challenging.(怎么样?
乙:我反对!#X_}_K4c W1s;k$w_a_{_p)t_Z_`6H Chinglish: This task is very difficult and I have to do it.(意思有了,但是用词功夫还需要多多修
Chinglish: A--Let us decide it this time. B--I oppose that!
Revision: A--We're the boss this time. B--I challenge that! (challenge
Fail
请看例句:@/J1t_t
Version 1: He didn't mention us in his speech yesterday.
Better version: He failed to mention us in his speech yesterday.
Chinglish: If the program can't be started, please don't be afraid.
Revision: If the application fails to load, just relax. (dj_U,f7Z
Appreciate
I'm pretty busy, but I promise I'll keep this thread updated!
I really appreciate your replies and your encouragement!
Any constructive ideas would be highly appreciated!
Contribute
Chinglish: He also supplied his strength to this.
Revision: He also contributed a lot to this.
:k)c_D_s3C.P$Z太傻超级论坛.E_i d_y_I!C3}_dGR

太傻超级论坛)i Version 2: I really appreciate your great contribution.(看情况)
Chinglish: You only know how to criticise others, but how much thing have you done yourself?
Leave
Revision: You're a critic!

Scenario.iR-Z
In the unlikely scenario that there is no major conflict, China is obviously willing to give peace a chance so long as Taiwan is not being unleashed by the Americans to pursue de jure independence.

Practice
)Z5n+j_v_C_e(B$k
例句: +r_y5x*t_D.v2d_\

Chinglish: It's was a familiar phenomenon in the feudatorial society.
Revision: It was common practice during the period of Feudal rule.
{!N_@-D-Z_J_Hf_V
Impress
1、Coolmax,
Chinglish: Coolmax, your this post is just so so.
Revision: Coolmax, I'm not at all impressed by this thread of yours.

So, if you want to impress your boss, you have to work very hard, never be late for your work and always try to be creative, and use the word "impressive" to commend your boss each day.
Follow

Some
Some 1,000 Dinosaur Fossils Found in China's 'Dinosaur Cemetery' 。 )C ~)H_e_n.B

Hey!wise up!
或“Don‘t be silly.”
Put up or shut up.
这句话也让人想到一句成语:walk the walk, talk the talk,即说到做到,有点像是中文里的言行一致,或是只说:walk the talk也可以。
You eat with that mouth?
还有一种说法:“You kiss your mother with that mouth?”
You are dead meat.
也可以说:“You are dead.”
Don‘t you dare!How dare you!
Don‘t push me around.
如:“You are so bossy. I don‘t like that.” 或“Don‘t push me any further.” 如:“I know why you are doing this, someone is pushing your button!”
You want to step outside?
You want to take this outside?
我还听过类似的用法,如:“Do you want to pick a fight?” 或“This means war.”
You and what army? You and who else?
要是有人跟你说“Do you want to step outside?” 还有一句话也很好玩:“Who‘s side are you on?”

Wine And Beer: Different Types Of Alcohol, Same Basic Process
Why wine is stronger than beer on this moment of science.
Wine and beer are made of different ingredients, but the basic process is the same.
You start with a liquid containing some kind of sugar, add yeast, and wait. The yeast digests the sugar, giving off alcohol in the process.
The sugar in beer comes mostly from a grain called barley. With wine, the sugar usually comes from grapes.
Either way, when the yeast finishes its work, the sugar has been turned into alcohol–which stays–and carbon dioxide, which bubbles to the surface.Since wine starts out with more sugar than beer does, it ends up with more alcohol.
Too Strong?
If you make beer or wine at home, the trick is knowing just how much sugar to start out with in order to get the alcohol content you want to end up with.
However, if the alcohol gets too strong, it’ll poison the yeast, stopping the fermentation altogether.
All About The Yeast
How much alcohol the yeast can tolerate depends partly on the type of yeast. And that’s another reason wine is stronger than beer:beer-yeast,with a lower tolerance for alcohol, is killed by the time the alcohol reaches about nine percent.
Wine-yeast is hardier and can withstand concentrations up to around sixteen percent.Since most beer is less than six percent alcohol and wine is generally under twelve percent, yeast usually runs out of sugar before it creates enough alcohol to poison itself.
Not Too Much Sugar
Novice home-brewers and wine-makers often try to boost the alcohol content by using a lot of sugar. This works up to a point, but every strain of yeast has a limit to how much alcohol it can produce before quitting.
Adding more sugar will make a sweeter beer or wine, but it won’t make it any stronger.
So, you know, it is what it is, but Americans aretotally annoyed by the use of "whatever" in conversations。
The popular slacker term of in difference was found "most annoying in conversation" by 47 percent of Americans surveyed in a Marist College poll。
"Whatever"easily beat out "you know," which especially grated a quarter ofrespondents. The other annoying contenders were "anyway" (at 7percent), "it is what it is" (11 percent) and "at the end of theday" (2 percent)。
其它入选最惹人厌的用语还包括"anyway(总之;反正)(7%)","itis what it is(这就是事实)"(11%),以及"at the end of theday(到头来)"(2%)。
"Whatever"--pronounced"WHAT'-ehv-errr" when exasperated--is an expression_r_r with staying power. Immortalized in song by Nirvana ("oh well, whatever, nevermind") in 1991, popularized by the Valley girls in "Clueless"later that decade, it is still commonly used, often by younger people。
It can be anall-purpose argument-ender or a signal of apathy. And it can reallybe annoying. The poll found "whatever" to be consistently disliked by Americans regardless of their race, gender, age, income or where they live。
"It doesn't surprise me because 'whatever' is in a special class, probably,"said Michael Adams, author of "Slang: The People's Poetry" and anassociate professor of English at Indiana University. "It's a word that--and it depends how a speaker uses it--can suggest dismissiveness."
Adams, who wasnot involved in the poll and is not annoyed by "whatever," pointsout that its use is not always negative. It also can be used in place of other, neutral phrases that have fallen out of favor, like"six of one, half dozen of the other," he said。
But then egative connotation might explain why "whatever" was judged moreannoying than the ever-popular "you know," which was recently givena public workout by Caroline Kennedy during her flirtation with the New York U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton. "You know," Adams notes, is a way for speakers to seek assent fromothers。
Pollsters atthe Poughkeepsie, N.Y. college surveyed 938 US adults by telephone. The margin of error is 3.2 percentage points. The five choicesin cluded were chosen by people at the poll discussing what popularwords and phrases might be considered especially annoying, said spokeswoman Mary Azzoli。
