Tradition and Innovation

Good morning, my fellow students and dear teachers.

The stories of our fathers and mothers lie in the long tradition, while the future script of our children will be written by innovation.

One nation would not be itself any more if it does not inherit their tradition, which is one of the most important ingredients for the culture of a nation. The influence of tradition on the main stream thoughts is still dominant, but there were good ones as well as bad ones. Tradition is the result of our ancestors’ adaption to environment. Part of tradition still suits nowadays, such as the solar term is the guide of weather. But somehow, tradition will make people shut down their will to take a step forward which may stop the development of the economy. So, our attitude towards tradition should be dialectical, take the essence to its dregs to keep its positive energy.

Innovation is an important power that will help us improve the society in many aspects. First, innovation is the way that people use their intelligence to create new things by breaking the old. Thus, innovation can activate our economy by creating new growth point and new jobs. Second, politics should suit the economy if one country wants to keep its economic growth. Politics should change along with the economy, if politics remain the same, it will have negative effects on the economy, and thus, innovation in politics is needed. Third, I want to talk about my major, Industrial Design, because a lot of things occur to at the first sight of the word “innovation”. Innovation is also needed in improving our daily life. A great example is the Apple Company and its brilliant products. Design is to produce something new and new means in some way. Einstein said: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” And apple is one of those who make their products as simple, cheap and functional as they can. You know you’ve achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away.

Tradition is the innovation of the past, and innovation is the new tradition. Innovation is the blast that will bring new towards old. Innovation is the best way for our nation to invest in the future.

传统与创新

传统与创新究竟是什么关系呢？在我看来，如果把传统看作树根和树干，那么创新就是枝叶和花果。传统与创新相互之间是密切相关的，前者是后者的基础，而后者是前者的深入发展。

人类在与宇宙、自然和生命相处的过程之中，通过观察、发现、探索、认识、实践、积累和总结得出的那些，符合宇宙、自然和生命规律的、经得起推敲及时间和实践检验的，理解、解释、对待和处理各种事情及解决各种问题的经验、方法、行为、理论和意识形态就是传统。与之不符合的那些陋习及恶习不能够和传统混为一谈，只能把它们叫做习惯、惯用或惯例。传统就像我们基因一样，可以进化而不可以丢失。我们想象一下，如果没有了人类的基因还会有人类吗？传统也是一样，如果迷失了传统，人类就等于回到了最初起源时的混沌状态，哪还谈得上什么创新呢？因此，抛开传统谈创新就等于建造空中楼阁。弄明白了什么是传统，就不难理解传统与创新的关系了。传统与创新很像是一棵大树，只有树根和树干长得好，大树才会枝繁叶茂、花果累累。因此，我们要取得好的创新，首先得很好的继承传统，否则，创新就无从谈起。

我们的确应该很好的继承传统，然而，继承传统首先得从学习传统开始。我们在幼年和学生时期接受启蒙和基础教育的过程其实就应该是学习传统的过程。中国有句老话，说种瓜得瓜种豆得豆，其中种是关键，我们究竟应该种些什么呢？这是一个值得让我们的园丁们深入思考的大问题，也是一个值得整个社会关注的大问题。我们每一个人都有责任和义务追寻问题的答案，守株待兔无疑是坐以待毙。只有人人都行动起来，我中华这棵大树，才能枝繁叶茂、花果累累。我们应该记住，传统永远是树根和树干，创新永远是枝叶和花果。果是什么？果就是种子！种子看起来很渺小，其实很伟大，因为，无论任何有生命的物种，只有有了种子才能够生生不息、源远流长。如果我们应该把传统也看成是有生命的，把创新看成是传统的遗传和进化，那么，创新就变得触手可得了。

Tradition and Innovation

What is the relationship between tradition and innovation? In my opinion, if the traditional seen as roots and trunk, innovation is the foliage, flowers and fruits. Tradition and innovation are closely associated with each other, the former is a foundation of the latter, but the latter is the further improvement of the former.

Human being in the process of getting along with the universe, life and nature through observation, discovery, exploration, understanding, practice on accumulation and summarization, the universe, life and nature law to withstand scrutiny and time and practice test, understand, explain, treat and deal with all kinds of things and experience to solve a variety of problems, is the traditional method, behavior, theory and ideology. The contrast does not comply with those bad habits and bad habits cannot be confused and traditional, only they called habits, conventional or practice. Traditional, like our genes, evolution and cannot be lost. Imagine, if there is no human gene also human? The same tradition, if tradition is lost, the human mean back to the very origin of the chaotic state, which also talk about what innovation it? Therefore, put aside the traditional talk innovation is tantamount to build castles in the air. To figure out what is traditional, is not difficult to understand the relationship between tradition and innovation. Tradition and innovation is very much like a tree, only grow roots and trunk, trees will flourish, flowers and countless. Therefore, we want to get a good innovation, the first well-inherited traditional Otherwise, innovation will be impossible.

We should be very good indeed inherit the tradition, however, inherited the traditional first have to start from learning traditional. We accept the process of enlightenment and basic education during childhood and students. In fact, you should learn the traditional process. Chinese saying goes, said the tree, melon kinds of beans and you get beans, which species is the key to whether we should plant what? This is a big problem worthy of our gardeners who think deeply, is also a big problem worthy of attention by the society as a whole. Each and every one of us has the responsibility and obligation to pursue answers to questions, sit back and wait undoubtedly placed. Only when everyone is action, can this Chinese tree flourish, flowers and countless. We should remember that the traditional roots and trunk forever, innovation foliage, flowers and fruits. What is the fruit? Fruit is the seed! Seed looks very small, in fact, very great, because, whatever species of life, only with the seed to be able to thrive long history. If we should tradition as a living, innovation as a traditional genetics and evolution, then the innovation becomes fingertips got.
