白衣女人 读后感 the woman in white

Book report about The Woman in White

The writer of The Woman in White ,William Wilkie Collins(1824 –1889) born in London, was an English novelist, playwright, and author of short stories, who was keenly popular during the Victorian era and was named as the forerunner of detective novels. In 1854, meeting the literary giant ,Dickens, influenced by Dickens, he commenced to create detective novels. And The Woman in White was the author’s first detective novel which was published in 1860 and also initiated an additional way for English literature.

The Woman in White takes Laura’s unhappy marriage and the deep connection between her and Walter who is a young artist as the main line. Laura, the heir to a large fortune, a pretty and pure girl, insists following her dead father’s decision to marry Sir Percival, a cruel and selfish man, whose aim is nothing but to occupy Laura’s property. In order to attain his goal, Percival conspiring with Laura’s uncle, hounds Anne(the woman in white) to death, who is Laura’s half sister , and throws Laura into asylum. But with the utmost help from Walter and Marian, finally, the scheme is revealed out and the truth is known. And overcoming obstacles together, the lovers have a lifetime for perfect felicity.

It is a story of greed and evil, innocence and betrayal, confused identities and cruel deceptions. And this is also a story of love----a love that begins with heartbreak and grief, where there seems no light forward,

no hope for the future. But love does not die easily; it can survive separation, and despair, and even death itself…I appreciate the love story about Walter and Laura, but I do adore Marian.

I can’t say Marian is the savior of Laura, but without her, Laura could do nothing but face her miserable destiny. “Can’t you see that Miss Halcombe has the courage and understanding of a man? How I admire that woman”, this is the exact words given by Count Fosco, her opponent. Even her enemy praises her. Don’t you think it is unnecessary for me to admire Marian for her virtue?

As Laura’s sister, as her moral support, she is always there, giving Laura a boost, helping her through difficulties. Coming back to earth, there is no one there who isn’t willing to be accompanied by a person who is reliable and dependable. But the chance of having a Marian is a million to one.

And now that it is like fishing for a needle in the ocean, we could switch our own role to Marians, care about friends and be of service to them. When they encounter great difficulties and need other's encouragement, we could be there; when they get achievements and are cheerful and joyful, we could be there.

Pay attention to the world around us, maybe our Marians have already been with us. Having friends is easy, having bosom friends is not easy. Cherish what you have at the moment.

The woman in white

The story happens in 19th in England. The author ---Willkie Collins is a realism author. He and Dickens at the same age and they are very good friends. In 1859, this story appears on Dickens’ magazine firstly.

This story surrounds the woman in white, tells about greed and evil, innocent and betrayal, confused identities and cruel deceptions. In this story have five main people, Walter, Laura, Marian, Sir Percival, and Count Fosco. In order to get money, he is married with Laura. And he confused Laura and Anne (the woman in white)’identities. But in the end his plot exposed. Laura and her really lover --- Walter live together.

This story is unique. The entire story is told by two people --- Walter and Marian. Author uses this two people to develop the story. It let people read interesting. All of this main people have their own character. Walter loves Laura deeply but he dares to express his love. But at last, he investigates this plot and let Laura get the things that she should have. In other words, Walter is author. They have the same experience. So author pins on him own wishes. Laura is the typical representation of innocent people. She is all boys perfect lover. She is kind but hopeless. Facing Sir Perivale’s threaten she can do nothing. Marian is a brave girl. She also loves Laura very much. In order to Laura’s happiness, she can do everything that she can do, including give up her own happiness. Sir Percival is a greed man. So as to get money he uses many ways. Count

Fosco is a crafty man. He is smart but wicked. So at the end of the story

--- Justice over evil. In this story, I admire Walter and Laura’s love, after

experience hard, they live together forever. I also admire Marian’s

bravery. Laura and Marian’ love and Mr. Fairley’s indifference to the

kindness form obvious contrast. Sir Percival and Count Fosco’ greed also

react the excessive pursuit of money.

In my opinion, gentlemen’s loves of money taken form the road. If the

things belong to you, no one can take away. If it isn’t belonging to you,

you will never get it. As the saying said, contents are better than the rich.

Money is important but doesn’t mean everything. Kindness, friendship,

love are all important than money. As Walter in order to his love, he is

willing to do everything that he can.

So from this story I know that cherish everything who loves you. At

the same time cherish nowadays, do everything that you can do better.
