The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea,a novel written by Ernest Hemingway, was published by Foreign Languages Press in 2008. The writer is one of the most famous American novelist. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. During his later life, Hemingway suffered from increasing physical and mental problems. In July 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself. Hemingway’s distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement and had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing.

The Old Man and the Sea is based on the true story. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, met old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway by a ship in the storm, Fuentes rescued Hemingway. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes forged a profound friendship, and often with fishing. In 1936, Fuentes was far out to sea to catch a big fish and many things happened. This is a book about the old fisherman who lived alone in sea fishing. After the 84 days with nothing,he caught a huge marlin. It had never been seen and heard of for the old man. The fish was at least two feet longer than his boat. The fish was very large, and dragging the boat drifted for two days and nights, the elderly was in a never suffered through a difficult test in these two days and two nights. Finally the fish

was stabbed and tied to the bow. However, it was unfortunate that some sharks suddenly turned up in returning, the elderly and the Shark had a desperate struggle. Finally, the giant marlin was eaten up by sharks. After

some bitter, the old people dragged home only a bare and a skeleton of

the injury, but he still be appreciated.

When I read “the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast

really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place...”

I extremely admire this senior fisherman, because he by now already

projected on some fish, but he had not settled to the present situation, but

was approaches the bigger goal advance. Again has a look us, usually

meets one slightly is difficult, we all complain incessantly. We will be the

motherland’s future, will be supposed to like this old person same mind

lofty aspiration, will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal.

When I read “the big marlin start fast to gather round the young

fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand

lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did

utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fish's life, it was static

floats on the water surface... ”My heart also liked together the big stone

falls. I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentless

spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not

slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly above. Just because had this

kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death

contest success. We also must study senior fisherman’s spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain successfully.

The novel eulogized the spirit which the senior fisherman had. And I think we should learn from him in some extent. To begin with, we should never give up when faced with the fear and dangerous. When we make a decision to overcome and try our best to do something, I firmly believe that we will win. Secondly, Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit. It is the road long, difficult and full of ups and downs. But as long as our own tenaciously to a brave heart to meet the challenges of self-confidence, we will always be a real winner! What is more, I think the false beliefs about the weakness of the elderly can be turned around only if society looks much harder at their abilities and their goals. We must begin to see that although they may not have great physical strength, they still have a mind that is capable of many things. There are many jobs that they can hold in the workplace and many things they can do to help society of which we, the younger generation, are not aware. We must realize that they have gone through many experiences that we have not and that they hold a vast amount of knowledge about the world around them. There will come a time when one's age does not determine the value of one's life, but we can change that dream to reality only if we try.

Hemingway's legacy to American literature is his style: writers who

came after him emulated it or avoided it. After his reputation was sealed with the publication of The Sun Also Rises, he became the spokesperson for the post-World War I generation, having established a style to follow. Reynolds asserts the legacy is that “he left stories and novels so starkly moving that some have become part of our cultural heritage.” In a 2004 speech at the John F. Kennedy Library, Russell Banks declared that he, like many male writers of his generation, was influenced by Hemingway's writing philosophy, style, and public image. Conversely, as early as the 1930s Hemingway’s style was parodied, and criticized as “lazy” within the context of the “American literary tradition.”

In a word, Hemingway is a good writer and the book The Old Man and the Sea is worth reading. I hope you will read this book and learn something useful from the old man.
