A Wonderful Experience

I had a wonderful experience in the United States. I love Institute, I love the Boys and Girls Club. Also I traveled a lot around the U.S.. I have been to Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho. I did a lot of fun stuff there, like shooting, bowling, baseball, soccer, blah, blah, blah...But my favorite place is California. I especially like the weather there. I really enjoyed my days in California. I have been to Beverly Hills, Hollywood, the Staples Center, China Town, Universal Studio, Warner Bro., the Getty, Magic Mountain and the beautiful beaches. I made a lot of friends in the United States. They are amazing, fantastic and super awesome people who are my life-long friends.

I worked as a camp counselor and was in charge of a group of around 20 children. Each week I would get a different age group. Some of my job duties were to take care of the children, resolve conflict, and assist in art, cooking, recreational activities, science, sports, computer learning and crafts.

I loved my job and bonded with the children, I also taught a Chinese class once a week at the camp. The kids looked forward to taking my class, I made it fun and entertaining, yet the kids learned a lot!

Besides the wonderful time I spent with the kids, staff and volunteers in Boys and Girls Club, I went to a great camp which lasted 7 days in the mountains with the Club. I worked as a counselor of a group of kids at the camp. We stayed in a cabin together and I helped them stay organized, comforted them when they felt upset, and also gave some medical help to them.

My host family is super awesome! My dad and mom gave me a lot of help when I was in the United States. We traveled a lot together and they also introduced their three great boys to me. I already become a member of their family. They told me to keep the house key as a souvenir when I was going back to China which meant that I was always welcomed to come back to their home at anytime. And the day I returned to China, my dad sent me a message said "It's going to take a while adjusting to 'life after Jonathan'".

My community coordinator is Sandra Haglund, an amazing 72-year-old lady, who is always wired, positive and charismatic. I really learned a lot from her and I also shared her story to my parents. She is an excellent example to millions of Chinese elders. She already inspired my parents who said that "She is what we want to be!".

I gained a great understanding of the American culture. The staffs and kids had a fantastic time helping me learn English as well as some of their slang words. I tried to work hard and be a great, positive role model, to be professional and a team player. I also learned Spanish which was totally a new language for me before I went to America. It took me about 6 weeks to manage the basic rules of this language. Now I can learn it all by myself, and speak it fluently when I am eating in the restaurant and shopping in the market or grocery store.

I really enjoyed my days and learned a lot through this program. I’m so happy for all that I have experienced while coming to the United States and seeing California, Nevada, Utah and Idaho. I also made a lot of foreign friends who will always be someone that I will want to stay in touch with as they are so awesome!

Hasta luego, Estados Unidos!
