Sons and lovers

This novel is written by D. H. Lawrence, a man suffered many sorrow and led a miserable life. He had many masterpieces in his life, but this one is the most famous. when he was a child, his mother gave him all her love and attention to him, and trying all her most to get the child away from the mining work( his father’s work), hoping a bright future of her child. Though Lawrence’s ill-parents quarreled frequently, he managed to get enough knowledge from his mother, once a qualified teacher. When he got older, he changed his work about three times, ending up in Croydon as a teacher. It was this time that he started his writing career part-time. Firstly some poems and later novels. After the death of his mother, he became ill and his masterpiece came out after falling in love with Frieda.

As for the famous ‘sons and lovers’, I think it is the reflection of the author’s whole life. The main character of the novel, paul, is strongly affected by his mother, even when he meet his first love. Even his deep emotion to Miriam cannot make him betray his mothers’will. That is the evidence of his Oedipus complex, and maybe that can explain why he marries a married women, Clara, for this women lived with him for a long time, and he tests her loyalty until he is 50, which reflects his unrest and suspect emotions for everyone.

On my point of view, I think the most unexpected plot is that Paul should have left Miriam, a women he once claimed to love. Every time when I read this part, I am really pity for Miriam, for she give all she has to Paul, but Paul still leaves her, without even a proper explain. And the most disappointed ending is that paul should have fallen in love with another woman in such a short time. On this issue, I cannot help but to think that paul has never loved Miriam. This is totally unfair to the lovely girl, who gave her heart as well as her body to the young man. From here, we can come to the conclusion that every girl should be careful of these goats, for they may only want to maintain their own physical needs. If we fall too deep into the relationship, we may become the tribute of men’s ignorance.

Another impressing scene is the death of Ms. Morel. In fact, the most upset man is Morel, the woman’s husband, whose relationship has maintained for more than 30 years. As the novels puts it: when a man has been married to a woman for over 30 years, she is no longer a woman or a wife. She is half of her husband’s soul. It was the fact that half of him had just died, and he knew that the other half would soon follow. I am deeply touched by their true love, by their dependence to each other, by their superior understanding of the definition of husband and wife. If we want a stable relationship in the future, we must find a friend of our soul, not a cooperated relationship of physical needs.

There are too much we can learn from the excellent novel, from the whole experience of the author. As a matter of fact, everyone’s experience is a long journey, as well as an adventure, and an never ending novel.
