I appreciate the way the film went on and its ending.

The film began with a monochrome frame: 1919 in Paris Opera, an old man in a wheelchair and an old lady, from whose eye contract I realize they knew each other, an action, a music box and a chandelier. The atmosphere was silent and bleak, which also gave the story a history charm.

Suddenly, the broken chandelier came to itself and the frame became vivid. I notice that the time dated back to 1870 when the story started. It is a cutback of plot and I like it. It makes remember the film Titanic: Rose thought of past when she saw the wall cabinet salvaged from seafloor. Both the two had symbols to lead audience into plots.

The film lasted more than two hours and during it, there are many

cutbacks to connect past the story happened and now. Especially in the end, Raoul, the old man who first appeared in the film, appeared again, still in the wheelchair, came to his wife’s tomb. I think it is a good around echo to end the story. It makes the starting and ending coherent and the story complete.

Apart from the cutback it used in the film, I also like the ending. It’s hard to say it is a happy one or sad one, and I regard it as a tragicomedy: happy because Christine lived with Raoul as they expected; sad because Phantom was still alone.

I feel shocked at last when I see a rose and a ring beside Christine’s tomb. It is Phantom’s deep love to Christine. Luckily, at that moment, I know, to Phantom, it doesn’t matter whether loved him or not, but that he had gone out of the darkness to have his new life. What’s more, Raoul put the music box which was made by Phantom in front of Christine. That is, he had regarded Phantom, his past rival, as his friend and her wife’s mentor. This scene was peaceful: two men loved a woman, but they would not fight any more; they just loved her in their own ways.
